China’s EV Sales Surge as BYD Achieves Record Sales in June, While Petrol Car Sales Decline

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, set a new sales record in June, signaling a robust rebound in demand after a price war failed to stimulate consumer interest. The China-based EV and battery leader, witnessed the sale of over a quarter of a million units last month, surpassing its previous record established just a month earlier.

According to BYD, the sales of new energy vehicles in June nearly doubled compared to the corresponding period last year, reaching an impressive 253,046 units as opposed to 134,036 units in June 2022. This remarkable surge in sales underlines the growing popularity of EVs within the world’s largest automobile market, primarily driven by heightened consumer enthusiasm and improved economic growth in China.

In the first half of this year, BYD’s shipments also almost doubled, amounting to 1.2 million units. This achievement was aided by favorable economic conditions in China and the resolution of industry disruptions stemming from COVID-19-related lockdowns in Shanghai that occurred a year ago. Despite facing fierce price competition, BYD maintains a market capitalization of $100 billion, surpassing that of both General Motors (GM) and Ford.

The positive trend extends beyond BYD, as Li Auto, a smaller Chinese EV manufacturer led by billionaire Li Xiang, reported a significant year-on-year sales gain of 150% in June, delivering 32,575 vehicles. Shanghai-based Nio, Guangzhou-based Xpeng, and Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai all witnessed significant increases in deliveries, reflecting the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in China.

Nio handed over 10,707 cars to customers in the period, marking a 75% increase compared to the previous month. Xpeng achieved its best sales of the year so far, with a month-on-month jump of 14.8% in deliveries, totaling 8,620 units. While Tesla does not disclose monthly sales figures, data from the CPCA revealed that their Gigafactory in Shanghai delivered 42,508 vehicles in May, a 6.4% increase from the previous month.

These extraordinary sales figures from BYD and Li Auto signify a notable shift towards electric mobility among consumers as the EV market in China stabilizes. The sustained sales growth reflects the increasing acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable and eco-friendly transportation option.

However, the surge in sales of battery-powered cars has come at the expense of petrol-powered vehicles in the world’s largest automotive market. China reported a 7% decline in petrol car sales, with 5.21 million units sold in the first five months of 2023, according to CPCA data.

Meta in talks with Tencent to introduce VR headsets in China

According to recent reports from the Wall Street Journal, Meta, the company headed by Mark Zuckerberg, is engaged in discussions with Chinese enterprises to introduce its VR headsets into the Chinese market. The move aims to reestablish Meta’s presence in China and expand the availability of its devices. However, some Chinese companies express concerns due to Zuckerberg’s previous statements, which may pose challenges to potential collaborations.

mark-zuckerberg-quest-3

One of the companies reportedly in negotiations with Meta is Tencent. The decision to proceed with talks was made by Tencent’s founder and chairman, Pony Ma, after an internal debate among executives. However, Tencent has stated that they first need to understand the cooperation conditions put forth by Meta.

Challenges and Opportunities in China’s VR headset market

If an agreement is reached, Meta’s Quest 3 headset is likely to make its way into the Chinese market. Unveiled prior to Apple’s Vision Pro in early June, the Quest 3 features the Pancake optical design, resulting in a 40% reduction in weight and thickness compared to the Quest 2. Powered by the latest Qualcomm chip, the headset boasts performance more than twice that of the previous Snapdragon XR2 generation. While the device has not yet been officially released, Meta has announced its pricing, starting at $499, which represents a significant increase compared to its predecessor.

Currently, PICO, a VR headset manufacturer acquired by ByteDance, holds significant influence in the Chinese market. PICO’s PICO 4 series of VR headsets offer a price advantage over Meta’s Quest 3. Furthermore, the VR headset market in China is relatively small, making the success of Meta’s collaboration with Chinese companies uncertain, even if the Quest 3 is introduced.

The vastness of space makes it unrealistic to send probes outside the Milky Way to observe its entirety. However, scientists have found alternative methods to study our galaxy indirectly and gain valuable insights into its structure and evolution. One approach is to observe similar galaxies around us. According to the principles of cosmology, the universe is uniform and isotropic, implying that celestial bodies like stars and galaxies are not unique if placed within the broader universe. By studying other galaxies that share similarities with the Milky Way, astronomers can build models that capture the evolution process of our galaxy.

Observing the Andromeda Galaxy can help us understand the Milky Way

In this pursuit, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) plays a significant role. It resides in the local group of galaxies, close to the Milky Way, and bears a striking resemblance to our galaxy. The overall outline and internal spiral structure of the Andromeda Galaxy mirror those of the Milky Way. Recent discoveries even suggest that it has a bar-shaped core, indicating a possible similarity in being a barred spiral galaxy like our own.

Galaxy

Furthermore, the outer halo of the Andromeda Galaxy, with its metal-poor “old” stars, shares similarities with the Milky Way. This suggests a comparable evolutionary process where both galaxies gradually grew to their present scale by incorporating numerous surrounding dwarf galaxies over billions of years.

In addition to the Andromeda Galaxy, astronomers have also caught a glimpse of the “Milky Way” in its early stages. Images captured by the Webb telescope depict a distant galaxy with a redshift of 1.378, viewed approximately 4 billion years after the Big Bang. The galaxy appears elongated, surrounded by bright spots, which are actually ancient globular star clusters comprised of millions of stars. This galaxy has been aptly named “sparks” due to the dazzling fireworks-like display created by these star clusters.

Through the analysis of metal elements and evolution models, astronomers have inferred that this galaxy, referred to as the Spark Galaxy, bears a strong resemblance to the Milky Way during its infancy. At that time, it only constituted 3% of the mass of today’s Milky Way and was actively assimilating surrounding satellite galaxies and globular clusters. It is estimated that in another 9 to 10 billion years, it will reach the mass of today’s Milky Way.

This “young mirror image” of the Milky Way provides a treasure trove of information for astronomers, aiding in the study of our galaxy’s evolution. It offers a rare glimpse into the appearance and behavior of the Milky Way during its early years, which were previously only theoretical. One intriguing puzzle it helps address is the origin of globular clusters. By studying the globular clusters in the Spark Galaxy, scientists can gain insights into their age and formation, shedding light on the mysteries surrounding these clusters in the Milky Way.

It is currently believed that both globular clusters and early galaxies originated from primordial gas clouds, such as high-density neutral hydrogen clouds, in the universe. While galaxies are more complex in composition, star clusters are relatively simpler. This explains why some globular clusters contain older stars than the galaxies they reside in.

Twitter’s New TweetDeck will be Exclusive to Twitter Blue Soon

Twitter has been grappling with a series of issues lately, but that’s nothing new in terms of news. This left many users frustrated and seeking alternatives. The problems began when the platform started imposing limits on the number of daily posts users could view, causing widespread disruptions. Despite some improvements over the weekend, one important casualty of the ongoing troubles has been TweetDeck, which has remained problematic for users unless they switch to the beta version. In an effort to address these issues head-on, Twitter has now unveiled an enhanced version of TweetDeck.

In 30 days, users will have to be verified to use TweetDeck

The new update is still referred to as the “TweetDeck Preview” within the app itself. Users must actively opt-in to utilize the new version by accessing the menu in the original TweetDeck interface. However, once users make the switch, they will indeed regain access to basic TweetDeck functionality, particularly the invaluable list aggregation features. Twitter assures users that the transition process should be relatively simple, with saved searches, lists, and columns seamlessly carrying over. Additionally, the updated preview build now supports previously missing features such as Twitter Spaces and polls, although Teams functionality is currently unavailable.

Twitter

While Twitter has not yet officially announced the retirement of the old version of TweetDeck, a Twitter employee hinted at the change being permanent in a discussion thread, stating that they were in the process of “migrating everyone to the preview version.”

Nevertheless, despite the potential resolution offered by the new TweetDeck version, many long-time users may find themselves at a loss in the near future. According to Twitter Support, access to the power-user tool will soon be limited to Twitter Blue subscribers. They emphasized that “in 30 days, users must be Verified to access TweetDeck.” It remains uncertain whether this change will be implemented for all users in early August or if there will be a 30-day trial period before users are prompted to subscribe to the new version of Tweetdeck.

As Twitter continues its efforts to address the ongoing issues and refine TweetDeck, users may need some time to adapt to the evolving landscape of the platform.

Hyundai May Establish Another Electric Vehicle Factory in Canada

Hyundai is considering establishing a second electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in North America, and Canada is among the potential locations being explored, according to Automotive News. The South Korean automaker aims to expand its footprint in the all-electric vehicle sector and capitalize on the growing demand for EVs in the region. Hyundai Auto Canada’s CEO, Don Romano, revealed that the company is in discussions about its “step two” EV plans for North America, and Canada is a key part of that conversation. Talks have already taken place with Canadian officials, alongside engagement with government representatives from the United States and Mexico. Hyundai is actively seeking opportunities to boost its EV production capacity in line with its ambitious growth targets for the next decade.

The company’s previous plant was shut down in the year 1995

To strengthen the case for Canada, François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, met with Hyundai officials during a trip to South Korea. On his official Twitter account, Champagne pledged to work together with Hyundai to expand and collaborate in the EV and critical minerals sectors. Industry experts support Canada’s bid to become an EV manufacturing hub, citing the country’s battery plants, technological expertise, and skilled workforce. Sam Fiorani, vice-president of global vehicle forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, noted that Canada’s push for an EV future aligns with the industry’s trajectory and offers significant advantages for Hyundai’s expansion plans.
