Xiaomi India in hot water over Rs 5,551.27 crores illegal remittances

Xiaomi has had troubled relationships with Indian authorities. Last year, the country’s federal financial crime agency had frozen Xiaomi’s assets worth $676 million, accusing the company of making illegal remittances to foreign entities by disguising them as royalty payments. After a few quiet months, the Chinese company has now been issued a show-cause notice for FEMA violation of ₹5,551 crore, news agency ANI reported on Friday quoting officials.

Xiaomi India faces legal action over illegal remittances

According to reports, Xiaomi India, its officials (CFO Sameer Rao and former MD Manu Jain), and three banks (CITI Bank, HSBC Bank, and Deutsche Bank) have received a show-cause notice from the Adjudicating Authority in India under FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act). This notice has been sent based on a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding illegal remittances made by the company amounting to Rs 5551.27 crores.

Xiaomi asset seizure

“The Competent Authority, appointed under Section 37A of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, has confirmed the said seizure order. The Authority while confirming the seizure held that ED is right in holding that foreign exchange equivalent to Rs 5551.27 crore has been transferred out of India by the Xiaomi India in an unauthorized manner and is held outside India on behalf of the group entity in contravention of Section 4 of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 and the same is liable to be seized in terms of provisions of Section 37A of the FEMA,” said a statement from ED.

The authority notes that the payment of royalty is nothing but a tool for transferring the foreign exchange out of India, which is a blatant violation of the provisions of FEMA.

Segway brings computer vision technology to e-scooters, in partnership with Drover AI and Luna

Segway-Ninebot has announced a new partnership with tech startups Drover AI and Luna Systems. The announcement was made at the Micromobility Europe event in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The move is aimed at driving the development of Segway’s AI-powered e-scooter plans.

Segway

Segway-Ninebot is working on introducing computer vision tech to its AI-enabled electric scooter. The company’s new partnership with Drover AI and Luna aims at developing computer vision capability into e-scooters. This will enable the machine to detect and correct improper e-scooter riding. Segway hopes to integrate the tech into its AI-enabled e-scooters for optimized performance and safety.

The Segway S90L AI-enabled e-scooter was launched in 2022. It was viewed as the vertically integrated solution to the Scooter Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS). It offered a unified platform that provided for all-round and intelligent management of the scooter. It was a decent alternative for micromobility operators than having to retrofit third-party hardware and software systems on their e-scooter fleet. The ARAS was already the in-thing among operators before the introduction of the Segway solution.

Segway has sold over 20,000 S90L e-scooters to shared micromobility operators like Lyft since its release. However, the new move aimed at expanding the outlook of its operations. It will enable Segway to focus on its core area of hardware development while its partners, Drover AI and Luna take care of the software solutions. Drover AI and Luna are leaders in the ARAS ecosystem. They test and sell attachable IoT modules to several companies including Fenix, Beam, and Spin.

Segway says that the deployment of AI-based scooters in cities requires the training of the computer vision system in the scooter so as to learn the city’s architecture. There is therefore a huge amount of data that needs to be collected in every new city where the S90L is deployed. The model also has to be built in a way that is suitable for each city, according to Segway. Both Drover and Luna will provide the needed capacity for such city deployments. It is a non-exclusive partnership and buyers of the S90L can choose any of the startups for the needed support.

Segway still retains its own alternative software solution that buyers can also choose to retrofit into their e-scooter. Its new modular AI system is called Pilot Edge and is an add-on box with the necessary sensors. Drover is Segway’s preferred software partner and the brand will also recommend that customers purchase Segway’s hardware platform. The win-win situation for the software partners Drover and Luna, means both can fully focus on software development and deployment.

Madhav Sheth Reportedly Set To Join HONOR India To Revive The Brand In The Country

Realme Global Vice President for Business and Corporate Strategy Madhav Sheth is reportedly set to exit the company. He is expected to join HONOR’s India branch to revive the brand in the country. The information comes from IANS citing top sources familiar with the matter. Additionally, the company’s director-level executives across online and offline verticals are also expected to follow Sheth at HONOR India.

HONOR might comeback in Indian market as Madhav Sheth set to join the company

Realme

Earlier in March this year, Sheth was made the Global VP of Realme. This meant that he was no longer the CEO of the company’s India branch. The India business was entrusted to Nisar Naikoo and Dipesh Punamiya, who would manage it independently.

Additionally, before this, there were also rumors that the executive had resigned from his role which were denied. Sheth has been a part of Realme since its inception in 2018 and has played an integral role in establishing the brand’s presence in the Indian as well as European markets by introducing consumer products with innovative technologies. However, the executive has been noticeably absent from Realme’s launches in India including the recent Realme 11 Pro 5G series.

The development at Realme comes at a significant time when the Indian smartphone market is undergoing changes with Apple and Samsung solidifying their positions. Chinese brands are increasingly facing challenges.

Huawei sold off its HONOR smartphone business to China-based Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology Co Ltd in 2020. However, the brand still announced that it is committed to the Indian market and offering products beyond smartphones in the laptops and wearables segment.

Both Realme and Huawei are yet to provide an official statement on this development. Madhav Sheth has also not shared any announcement. It will be intresting to see HONOR’s rival in the Indian market under the solid leadership of Sheth.

When it comes to connectivity, the Q27U2D/P offers a range of options. It is equipped with HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces, ensuring compatibility with various devices. The USB-C interface supports 65W reverse fast charging, allowing you to power up your compatible devices conveniently.
