Fire Max 11 debuts as Amazon’s largest tablet so far

Amazon’s Fire tablet line includes some easy-to-use models that don’t cost a fortune. They are good for entertainment, browsing the web, and reading books. However, Amazon has taken its tablet game to the next level with the new Fire Max 11. It is the company’s largest tablet so far with an 11-inch display. The device has a slim and lightweight build with a higher resolution screen and a powerful processor.

Fire Max 11 could be a worthy iPad competitor

It is powered by a 2.2 GHz octa-core processor paired with 4GB RAM and either 64GB or 128GB internal storage options.

Amazon did not mention the exact name of the processor but says it’s 50 percent faster than the top-end model in its current lineup. Meta slapped with €1.2 billion fine by EU for GDPR breaches

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been fined €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) by the European Union (EU) for breaching the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The fine comes as a result of Meta’s failure to adequately protect European users’ personal data from American security services’ surveillance activities.

Mark Zuckerberg

Record-breaking GDPR fine for exporting European data to the US

The Irish Data Protection Commission, which made the decision, stated that Meta’s data transfers to the United States did not sufficiently address the risks to individuals’ fundamental rights and freedoms. The company used standard contractual clauses (SCCs) to transfer data to the US, but these measures were deemed inadequate following a ruling by the EU’s highest court.

In addition to the record-breaking fine, Meta has been given a five-month deadline to halt any future transfer of personal data to the US and a six-month deadline to stop the unlawful processing and storage of transferred personal data from the EU in the US.

This decision is part of an ongoing dispute that has created legal uncertainty for Facebook and other companies. The EU’s highest court invalidated an EU-US agreement governing data transfers in 2020 due to concerns about data protection in the US. Subsequently, the Irish authority ordered Facebook to cease transferring data to the US using alternative mechanisms like contractual clauses.

Efforts have been made to establish a new EU-US data flows agreement, and a replacement for the defunct “Privacy Shield” agreement was proposed in December 2022. The fine imposed on Meta coincides with the fifth anniversary of the GDPR, which is considered the global standard for privacy protection.

Meta intends to challenge the decision and the fine, emphasizing the potential harm to millions of people who use Facebook every day. The company warns that if it is forced to stop using contractual clauses without a suitable alternative, it may have to shut down services like Facebook and Instagram in Europe.

Under the GDPR, EU regulators have the authority to impose fines of up to 4% of a company’s annual revenue for severe violations. The Irish Data Protection Commission has become the leading privacy regulator for major tech companies with an EU presence, including Meta and Apple.

iQOO may have teased the Neo 7 Pro’s launch in India

iQOO had a busy day today as it unveiled the latest Neo 8 and 8 Pro smartphones in China, alongside the TWS Air Pro. While the new lineup will probably take a couple of months to make it to the global market, the company’s India CEO has teased the launch of a new model, likely the Neo 7 Pro. The handset could feature a more powerful chipset and better cameras. Here’s what we know so far.

iQOO Neo 7 Pro could bring high-end specs

iQOO India CEO, Nipun Marya recently shared a teaser on Twitter for an upcoming device. While the teaser did not reveal the name or design of the handset, it is believed to hint at an imminent launch of the iQOO Neo 7 Pro. As the name suggests, the device will be a more premium version of the iQOO Neo 7 which debuted back in February with the Dimensity 8200 chipset.

Details about the iQOO Neo 7 Pro are scarce but rumors suggest it will be a rebranded iQOO Neo 7 Racing Edition, offering the same specs and design. The latter was announced in China in December last year with a 6.78-inch E5 AMOLED display bearing an FHD+ resolution and a center-aligned punch-hole cutout. It offers a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,500 nits peak brightness.

iQOO Neo 7 Racing Edition is powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor with up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.1 storage. For photography, there’s a 50MP Samsung GN5 main sensor with OIS support, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2MP third unit. There is a 16MP selfie snapper on the front.  It is fueled by a 5,000mAh battery unit with support for 120W fast charging.

Samsung Galaxy F54 leaked renders show an unsurprisingly familiar design

Samsung phones used to have distinct designs. The F series used to look different from the A line, which was again different from the flagship S models. But this year, the Korean company has opted for a similar design for all of its smartphones. If we put the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy A54 side-by-side, you’d hardly be able to tell the difference. This trend continues as even the upcoming Galaxy F54 is expected to adopt the same camera arrangement as the rest of the phones.

Galaxy F54 could come with “flagship cameras” though

Design renders of the Galaxy F54, shared by 91Mobiles, suggest it will look similar to many other Samsung phones. It can be seen with three separate camera lenses on the back, each wrapped in a shiny ring. The device has a flat back with curved edges. It is pictured in two colors: Dark Blue and Silver with a fancy gradient finish.

Samsung-Galaxy-F54

While the design is nothing new, the F54 will bring flagship cameras with super steady OIS, nightography, and Astrolapse features, says the outlet. The handset is rumored to feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is expected to be powered by the Exynos 1380 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM, 128GB, and 256GB of onboard storage.

In the camera department, the Samsung Galaxy F54 5G could get a triple unit setup with a 108MP OIS primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens, and a 2MP sensor. The front may boast a 32MP snapper for selfies and video calls. The mid-ranger is said to pack a particularly large 6,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. It will likely run Android 13-based One UI 5 out-of-the-box. A recent leak claims the Galaxy F54 will be the priciest in the series, with the 256GB version priced at Rs 35,999.

TCL and Hisense Gain Ground on Samsung in LCD TV Panel Market

The competition in the consumer electronics industry is fierce. Tech giants like Samsung, Oppo, Apple, Huawei, Lenovo, and LG are all vying for market share with a wide range of products. Research firms like Omdia help us to understand the latest trends in the industry. Their most recent study of the LCD TV panel market found that Samsung is the largest buyer, but Chinese firms are not far behind. Here are the details…

Samsung is biggest LCD TV panel buyer, but Chinese firms are not far behind

New evidence suggests a noteworthy trend in the TV panel market: Chinese brands are making substantial gains in the LCD TV panel market. According to a recent report released by prominent market research firm Omdia, Chinese electronics companies have achieved significant growth in Q1 2023.

TCL and Hisense, two Chinese brands, have taken the lead in LCD TV panel purchases, with TCL buying 12.4 million panels and Hisense closely following with 11.2 million. This change in the market landscape has unsettled the long-standing champion of this sector, Samsung, which came third, purchasing 15.6 million panels.

Several factors have contributed to the increased demand for LCD TV panels in Q1 2023. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, for one, has heightened the need for home entertainment solutions. Additionally, the persistent chip shortage is forcing TV manufacturers to pivot towards LCD panels as OLED production faces significant challenges.

The rising prominence of Chinese brands in the LCD TV panel market poses a challenge for Samsung, a brand renowned globally for its quality electronics, especially TVs. However, this change also presents a golden opportunity. As long as Samsung continues to innovate, maintaining the superior quality of their products and offering them at competitive prices, they can retain their dominant position in the global TV market.

China-Made Tesla Models Offer Canadian Buyers a More Affordable Way to Go Electric

Tesla is one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturers. Consequently, it maintains various operations for production, sales, and post-sales services in many countries. Unlike many companies, it performs the majority of its production in the US and Europe, or at least it used to. However, this situation may now change. According to the latest reports, Tesla has started selling China-made electric vehicles in Canada, a move that could have significant implications for the global EV industry. Here are the details…

Tesla Expands Global Reach with Launch of China-Made EVs in Canada

Tesla has begun selling China-made electric vehicles in Canada. Previously, the company had focused on manufacturing its vehicles in the United States. However, the rising cost of manufacturing in the US has made it more attractive for Tesla to manufacture its vehicles in China, where labor costs are lower. This shift in strategy is a sign that Tesla is serious about expanding its global reach and becoming a major player in the EV market.

The launch of China-made Tesla models in Canada is also significant because it could set a precedent for the international distribution of China-made EVs. If Tesla is successful in selling its China-made vehicles in Canada, other automakers are likely to follow suit. This could lead to a significant increase in the availability of EVs worldwide, which could help to accelerate the transition to a cleaner transportation system.

The launch also underscores the growing importance of the Chinese EV market. China is the world’s largest EV market, and Tesla’s decision to manufacture and export vehicles from its Shanghai factory demonstrates the increasing influence of China in the global EV industry. While China has advanced manufacturing capabilities, there are some concerns. Tesla will have to ensure that its China-made vehicles meet the high standards that its customers have come to expect. Additionally, there could be geopolitical tensions or trade restrictions that could potentially impact Tesla’s ability to export vehicles from China.

WhatsApp introduces password reminder feature for end-to-end encrypted backups

WhatsApp has recently implemented a new feature aimed at enhancing the security of its users’ data. With its end-to-end encryption capabilities, WhatsApp has long been favored for secure communication. However, until September 2021, the platform’s backups to the cloud were not encrypted, posing a potential security risk. To address this concern, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, introduced encrypted backups to Google Drive, which could be protected with a password.

Strengthening Data Security: WhatsApp’s New Password Reminder Feature

While this added an extra layer of security, there was a possibility of users forgetting their encrypted backup passwords, particularly if they didn’t change their phones frequently. To mitigate this issue, WhatsApp has now rolled out a password reminder feature. According to reports from WABetaInfo, users are being prompted to enter their 64-digit key or password for the end-to-end encrypted backup after updating to the latest version of the app. Access to the app is restricted until the correct password is entered or encrypted backups are turned off.

This reminder serves as a precautionary measure to prevent users from permanently losing access to their WhatsApp chat history. If the encrypted password is forgotten, there is no option to recover it. Therefore, it is crucial to remember the encrypted backup password to avoid losing valuable chat data.

In case users have already forgotten their WhatsApp backup’s encrypted password and encounter the reminder, they can choose to disable encrypted backups. However, this will result in the loss of access to previous encrypted WhatsApp chat history. If necessary, users can re-enable the security feature with a new password or 64-digit key.

WhatsApp also implements a similar reminder for the six-digit code used for two-factor authentication, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding user accounts. To avoid the risk of forgetting the new password, it is recommended to save the details in a reliable password manager app for Android, thereby ensuring easy access to the password whenever required.

In addition to this security enhancement, WhatsApp has recently introduced other features to empower its users, such as message editing and chat lock for securing conversations. It has also expanded its functionality by introducing multi-device support, enabling users to use the same account on up to four phones.
