Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will offer major performance boost with no compromise on efficiency

The highly anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is generating considerable excitement and for good reason. Building upon the success of its predecessor, this latest offering from Qualcomm is expected to deliver significant performance upgrades without compromising on efficiency.

1+5+2 Core Configuration and Enhanced L3 Cache: Key Features of the New Snapdragon

Snapdragon-8-gen-3

According to insider information shared by renowned tipster Ice Universe, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will introduce a 1+5+2 core configuration, departing from the 1+2+2+3 setup of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This suggests the possibility of more powerful performance cores and potentially higher frequencies, although specific details regarding CPU cores and frequencies remain undisclosed at this time.

Furthermore, Ice Universe reports that the Adreno 750 GPU in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will boast “greatly improved” performance, while the chipset will also feature a 10MB L3 cache compared to the 8MB L3 cache found in its predecessor. Notably, Qualcomm aims to maintain the overall energy efficiency that made the previous generation an exceptional SoC.

OnePlus and Galaxy S24 Ultra: Early Adopters of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The release of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is scheduled for later this year, with OnePlus already conducting tests on a device utilizing this chipset. Additionally, rumors suggest that the Galaxy S24 Ultra may incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 across all regions. However, official specifications are currently scarce, as Qualcomm plans to unveil the new chipset in the coming months.

The arrival of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset will undoubtedly present a challenge for Samsung’s Exynos 2400 as it strives to surpass Qualcomm’s dominance. Both the current-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 have established themselves as exceptional chipsets, setting high expectations for Samsung to meet. Additionally, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 is rumored to rival the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with its inclusion of two Cortex-X4 prime cores, further intensifying competition in the market.

ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate Undergoes JerryRigEverything’s Durability Test, Doesn’t Snap Unlike Its Predecessors

ASUS launched the ROG Phone 7 series globally last month. The ROG Phone 7 and 7 Ultimate are equipped with powerful hardware with the latter also packing a small additional display, an AeroActive portal, iconic AirTrigger, and a comprehensive cooling system underneath. Now, a month after launch, the ROG Phone 7 has undergone JerryRigEverything’s durability test.

ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate durability test

The durability test of the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate begins with Zack breaking open the plastic window of the AeroActive cooler which opens the AeroActive portal’s flap. It gives a better look at the copper fins inside the device. Then the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate undergoes the scratch test. The screen is shielded by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and it produces scratches and deeper grooves at levels 6 and 7.

The side frame of the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate is made up of aluminum. It also has ultra-sonic trigger buttons and Blue-tinted buttons. The scrape test does show scratches on the side frame. After this, the gaming smartphone is subjected to a fire test. It withstands the flames for 30 seconds after which it turns White. Notably, the screen returns to normal once the dead pixels are restored.

At last, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate finally undergoes the bend test. It refuses to snap from both sides even after putting an ample amount of pressure. This is good news since the ROG Phone 5 and 6 both snapped under pressure.

Apple plans to simplify the ‘Hey Siri’ command to just ‘Siri’

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly working on a significant change to Siri that would eliminate the need for the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase. Instead, users would only need to say “Siri” followed by a command. This change aims to bring Siri closer to Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, which can be activated simply by starting a command with “Alexa.”

Apple’s Siri Set to Drop ‘Hey Siri’ Trigger Phrase

The transition from a two-word trigger phrase to a single word poses technical challenges, as Siri would need to accurately interpret the singular phrase “Siri” across various accents and dialects. The current “Hey Siri” phrase increases the chances of the system correctly recognizing the trigger.

In addition to this trigger phrase change, Apple is also said to be working on deeper integrations of Siri with third-party apps and services. This integration would provide better assistance to users by leveraging additional contextual information.

Although the exact timeline is not confirmed, these changes to Siri are expected to roll out sometime in 2023 or 2024. It’s possible that Apple could announce this update alongside iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this summer. However, the event’s primary focus is anticipated to be on Apple’s mixed-reality headset, so the Siri trigger phrase change might not be the centerpiece of the event.

Rumors suggest that iOS 17 will bring improvements such as granular control over flashlight brightness, customizable Lock Screen options, a revamped Apple Music with more graphics, and the ability to customize and organize the App Library. A redesigned Control Center and the possibility of app sideloading are also speculated.

Microsoft Enhances Cloud Security Measures to Combat Malware Distribution

In a recent announcement, Microsoft has taken a significant step in bolstering the security of its cloud services, including OneDrive and SharePoint. The tech giant revealed that it will now scan password-protected Zip files uploaded or shared by users. This proactive measure aims to tackle the long-standing issue of cybercriminals exploiting archived documents for malware distribution. Previously, Microsoft’s scanning capabilities were limited to uncompressed files, allowing malicious actors to bypass detection by setting passwords. Security researcher Andrew Brandt shed light on this development, highlighting the potential of this enhanced security feature.

Encrypted ZIP files can now be scanned by Microsoft

Archived documents have long served as a conduit for malware distribution. Cybercriminals have frequently employed password-protected Zip files to obfuscate their malicious payloads. However, Microsoft’s recent move to scan encrypted Zip archives on SharePoint marks a significant stride in combating this nefarious practice. By deliberately compressing various malware samples into encrypted Zip files and uploading them to Microsoft cloud services, Brandt demonstrated that these files were promptly flagged as containing malware.

Microsoft Cloud

While Microsoft’s proactive scanning approach adds an extra layer of security, the company recognizes that some users may have concerns regarding privacy and data integrity. To address these concerns, users who prefer Microsoft not to scan encrypted files have alternatives at their disposal. They can opt for different compression formats, such as 7-Zip, or utilize encryption algorithms like AES-256. These options ensure that users have the flexibility to maintain control over their data while simultaneously safeguarding it from potential threats.

With its decision to scan password-protected Zip files, Microsoft has taken a commendable step forward in securing its cloud services against malware distribution. By proactively identifying and flagging encrypted files that may contain malicious payloads, the company aims to provide users with enhanced protection and peace of mind. While users can choose alternative compression formats or encryption algorithms to prevent scanning, Microsoft’s commitment to bolstering security demonstrates its dedication to the well-being of its customers. By actively staying ahead of cyber threats, Microsoft continues to pave the way for a safer and more secure cloud computing environment.
