Unisoc Competes for Global Market Share with MediaTek-Style Strategy

When we think of mobile processors, Qualcomm is often the first company that comes to mind. This is because their chips are widely used in high-end and mid-range devices. However, it may come as a surprise to many that MediaTek, a Taiwanese manufacturer, is actually the world’s top-selling chip producer, surpassing even Qualcomm. With a wide range of chips produced for all kinds of devices, MediaTek has secured a significant market share. Following in their footsteps, Chinese company Unisoc is also adopting a similar strategy to expand their market share, particularly in the low-end smartphone chip market. Here are the details…

At Unisoc’s Shanghai showroom, China’s chip ambitions remain strong in the mature technology arena

Chinese chip firm Unisoc is expanding its market share in low-end smartphone chips, The company’s success lies in its focus on less advanced chips, allowing it to remain relatively unscathed by US sanctions to date. In fact, Unisoc’s share of the global smartphone chip market was 10% in Q3 2022, according to market research firm Counterpoint, ahead of Samsung Electronics.

Unisoc’s success with 5G chips is notable, including the launch of the T820 chip in November 2022 and the subsequent launch of a 5G communication solution at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona in March 2023. Unisoc’s T820 chip was made possible by a team of more than 200 engineers who slept at the office for nearly three months during Covid lockdowns last year.

Unisoc has not elaborated on plans for mass production of the chip, but the company has launched three 5G chips using a 6-nanometre extreme ultraviolet lithography process, with the other two chips achieving mass production and being adopted by low-end smartphone brands in China. Despite Unisoc’s success, the company remains exposed to US sanctions because China still lacks advanced fabrication plants of its own.

For example, Huawei’s chip design unit, HiSilicon, was hobbled by US trade sanctions on exports of advanced chips, which required Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co to stop doing business with it. Unisoc has ramped up efforts to diversify its operations, extending the application of 5G chips beyond consumer electronic products to industrial solutions such as medical services, logistics, electricity, and mining, among others. The company’s shipments of 5G Internet of Things (IoT) chips and modules also increased 146% last year.

Unisoc chip

Unisoc is conducting a new 10 billion yuan (US$1.45 billion) fundraising round, according to Reuters, and its business covers more than 133 countries, with 80% of its products sold to overseas markets. Unisoc’s success underscores the life in the domestic semiconductor industry, particularly the section that focuses on more mature chip technologies.

According to China’s chip design industry association, the country had 3,243 chip design firms by the end of 2022, with their combined sales up 16% from a year ago. While risks remain, Unisoc is a shining example of how Chinese semiconductor companies can survive and even thrive under US trade sanctions.

Samsung Galaxy A32 5G Modified with 30,000mAh Battery and Lightning Port

Smartphones have become an indispensable part of our lives. Today, we use these devices for everything from basic communication to financial transactions, which is why they are always within reach. However, regardless of the brand, the weakest and slowest developing part of our phones is undoubtedly the battery. Although manufacturers compensate for this situation with ever-increasing fast-charging technologies, it is not accurate to say that battery capacities have increased much in the last 10 years. Recently, a Galaxy A32 user modified his phone and increased its battery capacity to 30,000mAh. Here are the details…

Galaxy A32 modified with 30,000mAh battery

While most smartphones have a battery capacity of around 5,000mAh, a Reddit user, Downtown_Cranberry44, has modified his Samsung Galaxy A32 5G to have a whopping 30,000mAh battery. This modification involves replacing the internal battery with an external pack made up of six Samsung 50E cells, each with a capacity of 5,000mAh, wired in parallel.

Samsung Galaxy A32

Although the modified phone has an impressive battery capacity, it comes at a cost. The external battery pack is bulky, weighing over 450 grams, which is more than twice the original weight of the device. The modified phone also has multiple charging ports, including two USB-A, one USB-C, micro USB, and Lightning ports. It is possible to say that this port variety has surpassed even most modern laptops.

The 30,000mAh battery reportedly took seven hours to fully charge, and the battery lasted up to two days under heavy usage. However, the modified phone no longer recognizes the external battery pack and always reports 1% battery level. While the modified Samsung Galaxy A32 5G may not be visually appealing, it shows that some users are willing to go to great lengths to improve their smartphone’s battery life. As smartphone technology continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether manufacturers will prioritize battery capacity in their designs.

It’s worth remembering that don’t try this at home. This modification is just a fun project for experts and enthusiasts and an accident caused by amateur craftsmanship can even endanger your life.

Apple Mixed Reality Headset May Work Seamlessly with iPhones

It is already known that Apple is working on a brand new product line in the wearable category for a while now. This new mixed reality based headset is expected to be officially revealed soon. However, prior to its announcement, a new patent have hinted at some of its functionality.

Based on a patent filed in Europe, the upcoming “Multi-Device Continuity for use with Extended Reality (XR) Systems.” In other words, the AR/VR headset will come with support for Continuity features like Handoff or Universal Control that are already available on existing gadgets. For those unaware, Continuity is basically the term the Cupertino based giant uses to imply that its products are supported by multiple platforms and can seamlessly communicate with one another.

Apple

So we can expect the new XR headset (Extended Reality) to feature Continuity for seamless connection between your Apple products as long as you’re signed into the same Apple ID on all of your devices. The connection will be enabled through wireless communication tech like WiFi and Bluetooth. Interestingly, the patent also offered us an example on how such a technology would work. A user can be wearing the headset and go through an email that was received by the iPhone.

Meaning, a simple hand gesture will let you view the email on the larger virtual display. This basically adds to the over functionality of the headset. Continuity is quite a popular feature under Apple with its macOS based PCs and iPhones being capable of communicating with one another. This basically makes the users’ life a lot more convenient and is typically added on most of the brand’s products.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE and Tab S8 FE Rumored to Launch in August

According to a recent rumor, Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy S23 FE in August this year, alongside some of the company’s top-of-the-line foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5.

This new information comes after Samsung’s decision to skip over the Galaxy S22 FE, which has left many fans eagerly awaiting the Galaxy S23 FE’s release. The upcoming “cheap” premium phone is expected to be a hit with budget-conscious consumers, offering high-end features at an affordable price.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE 5G

But that’s not all that Samsung has in store for its fans this year. Leaked information suggests that the Galaxy Tab S8 FE may also be making an appearance at the August event.

The highly anticipated Galaxy Tab S9 series is also rumored to be launched at the same Unpacked event. While it’s unusual for Samsung to debut two major tablet releases at the same event, it seems plausible that the Tab S8 FE could be launched alongside the Galaxy S23 FE and foldable devices.

Previously a Korean report also claimed that Galaxy Tab S8 FE could be launched in August or September. If the rumors are true, the Galaxy Tab S8 FE could be a successor to the Tab S7 FE, which was released in May 2021. The tablet is said to have a MediaTek chipset, an LCD display, and Stylus support and its model number is rumored to be “SM-X506B.” While some may be skeptical about the veracity of these leaks, Samsung has a history of surprising its fans with unexpected announcements at its Unpacked events.

Apple’s Dependency on Third-Party Manufacturers Will Reduce in 2023

Did you know that regardless of the brand of your phone, it is not actually produced by a single company? In order to produce a phone, it is necessary to manufacture components in many different areas such as the screen, processor, and battery. This is a job that requires expertise and significant investment. For this reason, dozens of different companies may have their signatures on a single device. However, many companies, especially Apple, continue to work to reduce this situation, which can be called “external or third-party dependency”. The US tech giant, which has been producing its own processors for a while, plans to introduce its own 5G modem in its flagship iPhones. Here are the details…

Apple’s 5G Modem To Be Mass Produced On TSMC’s 3nm Process, Risk Production Starting In Late 2023

Apple’s plans to introduce its own 5G modem in its flagship iPhone range is getting closer to reality. The tech giant is expected to break Qualcomm’s exclusivity by employing its own custom solution, codenamed ‘Ibiza,’ in the iPhone 16 family, which will be mass-produced on TSMC’s 3nm technology. The move is part of Apple’s efforts to be free of third-party chip providers, including Broadcom.

Apple 5G modem

According to a report by Commercial Times, supply chain sources revealed that risk production for Apple’s custom 5G modem is expected to begin in the second half of 2023, with wafer output slowly increasing in the first half of 2024. This timeline suggests that the iPhone 15 lineup will continue to use Qualcomm’s 5G modems exclusively, likely taking advantage of the newest Snapdragon X70.

However, Apple’s goal is to incorporate cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity in a single package, which will take several years to reach completion. In the meantime, Apple is focused on delivering a 5G modem with power savings, better integration with the iPhone, and broader features set in satellite connectivity.

With the introduction of its own 5G modem, Apple will have greater control over its hardware and software, allowing the company to deliver better performance and efficiency in its devices. It’s also a significant step towards achieving Apple’s long-term goal of being less reliant on third-party suppliers, giving the company more control over its supply chain.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X65 5G modem on the iPhone 14

While the transition towards in-house modem development will take several years, it’s a significant step towards Apple’s long-term goal of being less reliant on third-party suppliers.

Microsoft’s VSR Technology for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs Brings AI-enhanced Video Quality to Edge Browser

Microsoft’s Edge browser is introducing its version of Video Super Resolution (VSR), a technology that improves the quality of low-resolution videos. The feature is currently available to 50% of Edge insiders and will be enabled for the rest, later. Users can also enable this feature manually by changing the browser’s flag.

Microsoft Edge VSR Technology

The AI-powered VSR technology removes compression artifacts and enhances text clarity in videos, improving the viewing experience. The technology is limited to low-resolution videos, specifically videos with resolutions lower than 720p, and videos that are not protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM), which means it may not work on premium streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video.

The technology requires significant computational power, and as such, Microsoft has limited its use to devices with NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs (GeForce RTX 20, 30, and 40 Series with Tensor Cores) and AMD Radeon RX GPUs (Radeon RX 5700 up to Radeon RX 7800). The technology is only available when the device is connected to AC power and the video being played has a height and width greater than 192 pixels.

While the technology is limited to discrete GPUs, Microsoft is working on automatic hybrid GPU support for laptops with multiple GPUs. This means that future versions of the technology may utilize both the integrated and discrete GPUs on laptops.

Due to the computation power required to cleanup and upscale videos, video super resolution (VSR) is currently offered only when the following conditions are met:

The device has one of the following GPUs:
NVIDIA RTX 20/30/40 series OR AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs.
The video is played at less than 720p resolution.
The device is connected to AC power.
Both the height and width of the video are greater than 192 pixels.
The video is not protected with Digital Rights Management technologies like PlayReady or Widevine. Frames from these protected videos are not accessible to the browser for processing.
We are working on automatic Hybrid GPU support for laptops with multiple GPUs. Meanwhile, you can try VSR by changing Windows settings to force Edge to run on your discrete GPU.

When the feature is enabled, you will see an HD icon in the address bar. Clicking the icon will allow you to enable or disable the feature.

If you would like the try the feature out manually, you can enable the feature in edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution.

Chinese Autoflight Achieves World Record 250 Km Flight on Single Charge (Video)

Technology has been revolutionizing transportation for centuries, from horse-drawn carriages to cars, trains, and airplanes. However, recent advancements have brought a new mode of transportation to the forefront: “Flying cars,” in the form of drones. Chinese air taxi developer Autoflight has recently set a new world record for a vertical takeoff and landing aerial vehicle by completing a 250.3-kilometer flight on a single charge with its electric aircraft. Here are the details…

China’s Autoflight Claims World Record 250 Km EVTOL Aircraft Flight on Single Charge

Chinese air taxi developer Autoflight has set a new world record by completing a 250.3-kilometer flight on a single charge. The electric aircraft, named Prosperity 4, achieved the distance recently, and Autoflight has released a video of the entire flight, including vertical takeoff, fixed-wing cruise, and vertical landing.

The previous record for the longest flight by an eVTOL was 248.8 km, set by California-based eVTOL developer Joby Aviation in 2021. Prosperity 4, a five-seat vehicle powered solely by electricity, has a maximum takeoff weight of 2 tons and a maximum speed of over 200 kilometers per hour. It does not require airfield and runway facilities for takeoff and landing, and is quieter, safer, more reliable, and less costly than a helicopter, according to Autoflight.

The company’s president, Omer Bar-Yohay, said the firm is working to get the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s airworthiness certification for the aircraft by 2025. Autoflight, which was founded in 2017, has an annual production capacity of 1,000 large eVTOL unmanned aerial vehicles at its manufacturing center in Kunshan, near Shanghai. The firm’s management hails from China, Europe, and the United States, according to its website.

This achievement is a significant milestone for the eVTOL industry, which is seeking to revolutionize urban air mobility with electric-powered aircraft that can take off and land vertically. With the ability to fly longer distances, eVTOLs could provide a more sustainable alternative to traditional helicopters, especially in densely populated areas where noise and air pollution are major concerns.

The record-breaking flight also demonstrates the potential of Chinese companies to compete in the emerging eVTOL market, which is currently dominated by American firms. As Autoflight continues to develop its aircraft and secure airworthiness certification, it could become a major player in the growing eVTOL industry. As more companies enter the market and develop new technologies, we can expect to see even more impressive achievements in the future.

Geely Founder With Majority Stake in Meizu, Launches DreamSmart Geared Towards Connectivity

Back in 2022, entrepreneur Eric Li, who founded Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding, purchased a majority stake in Meizu, a Chinese consumer electronics company through his venture, Hubei Xingji Shidai Technology. The purchase of a 79.09% stake in Meizu allowed the two companies to collaborate in areas such as software, while Meizu remained an independent brand. Now, Eric Li launched DreamSmart, a new venture intended to focus on global connectivity and communications.

Shen Ziyu, the current chairman of Meizu and vice chairman of Xingji Technology, revealed last year that companies can stand out in the crowded smartphone industry by offering unique products, particularly at the premium level. Drawing on his experience in the car industry, Shen acknowledged last year that overall car sales were declining, but new energy vehicles have shown a lot of promise.

Similarly, while there are plenty of low-end smartphone options, there are few choices at the premium end of this segment, and the homogenization of products is a pressing issue. Meizu’s Android-based FlymeOS has already set the brand apart, and the company plans to extend its software across a range of devices. Xingji Technology was developing a portfolio of next-generation smartphones, mobile devices, and wearable smart devices at the time that will utilize extended reality technologies.

Furthermore, as mentioned previously, the establishment of DreamSmart ( Xingji Meizu Technology Group), a holding company led by Eric Li, aims to meet the demand for enhanced human connectivity. It will create, invest in and support pioneering businesses that provide game-changing experiences, accelerating their development to converge information, communication, and transportation innovation. DreamSmart’s first move is to combine Xingjishidai’s advanced innovation with Meizu’s long-established experience in smartphone technology. This new powerhouse, called Xingji Meizu Technology Group, will focus specifically on China and Asia.

In addition to DreamSmart’s Asian operations, Li is developing a separate division to bring state-of-the-art technology to the rest of the world. DreamSmart will be headquartered in Singapore with Li as Chairman while continuing to serve as Chairman of Geely Holding Group. Li aims to invest in ideas and businesses that will enhance human lives.

Huawei Accused of Tracking Visitors Via Security Badges at MWC 2023, Company Responds

The recent accusation against Huawei has created a buzz in the tech industry, and many MWC attendees are not happy with the situation. Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, has been accused of tracking visitors who visited its booth at the most significant tech event, MWC 2023, held in Barcelona. The allegations against the company are not new. In recent years, Huawei has been considered a national security threat in the United States due to its close ties with the Communist Chinese government.

The allegation against Huawei’s tracking devices arose when some visitors failed to return their security badges, which were needed to access the Huawei booth. Upon further investigation, it was found that the plastic container of the badge contained a tracking device that looked suspiciously like a tracker. Nokia‘s new Senior Vice President of Europe, Rolf Werner, took his badge apart and displayed the circuits that could be used as trackers. The possibility of Huawei using low-powered Beacon technology to track visitors has also been discussed.

Huawei has denied the allegations, and the company spokesperson said, “The Huawei pass is used only in the booth and returned when visitors get out. There is no need to track location.” The company also mentions on the back of the badge the use of radio frequency (RFID) and Bluetooth technology to collect the swipe time, real-time location information, and the residence time information of the badge holders within the Huawei exhibition area. The information collected will be used to analyze the overall interests of the invitees in their products to enhance their service quality. Huawei added that they would protect the collected information according to their privacy policy.

The GSM Association (GSMA), which organizes MWC, commented that the suggestion of tracking devices is a serious allegation, and they are investigating the issue. The allegations against Huawei do not look good for the company at the moment, since an in-depth response clarification isn’t out yet. While Huawei has been successful in the smartphone industry, the allegations against the company’s security concerns have been a major issue. Huawei needs to provide a more detailed response to clear the air regarding the recent allegations against them.
