Reliance Jio won the 5G spectrum auction in India, claims it is already prepared

India’s 5G spectrum auction has finally ended. The auction for 51,236 MHz of the total 72,098 MHz spectrum was announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Telecom Minister. This spectrum, which is valued at Rs. 1,50,173 crore and makes up around 71% of the entire spectrum, is included. Reliance Jio won the auction with the highest bid, buying over half of the airwaves offered for sale in the 5G spectrum auction.

Several bands of the 5G spectrum were bought by Reliance Jio, including the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands. Jio, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has stated that India will soon see a 5G rollout. The recently appointed Reliance Jio Chairman, Akash Ambani, announced that the business would roll out 5G throughout all of India in honor of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.”

In order to commemorate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” Reliance Jio claimed it will bring out “the world’s most advanced 5G network throughout India.” When India commemorates its 75th anniversary of independence on August 15, the company may disclose some information.

Jio placed the highest offer at the 5G spectrum auction, purchasing bands for Rs 88,078 crore. This includes the highly sought-after 700MHz 5G spectrum, which is supposed to provide a stronger signal.

The telco has over 400 million active users. Jio further stated that its 5G solution is made in India, by Indians and to suit the need of every Indian. “Jio is fully ready for 5G rollout in the shortest period of time because of its nationwide fiber presence, all-IP network with no legacy infrastructure, indigenous 5G stack, and strong global partnerships across the technology ecosystem,” the company further said in its press release.

Jio’s arch-rival Airtel was the second highest bidder. Airtel bought 19,867 MHz airwaves across different bands for Rs 43,084 crore. Vodafone Idea (Vi) bought spectrum for Rs 18,784 crore. 5G services are expected to roll out in India by October.

Spotify Premium users will soon get individual play & shuffle buttons

In the upcoming weeks, Spotify Premium subscribers will have more control thanks to an upgrade that separates the play and shuffle buttons. The play and shuffle buttons are currently unified for users of Spotify Premium and Spotify Free.

Spotify

“This new change will allow you to choose the mode you prefer at the top of playlists and albums and listen the way you want to,” Spotify wrote on its blog. “Whether you love the joy of the unexpected with Shuffle mode, or prefer listening to tunes in order by simply pressing Play, Spotify has you covered.”

Spotify listeners may remember that the platform also provided only the “shuffle play” option for albums, which frustrated many of the artists. This changed when multiple Grammy Award winner Adele tweeted at Spotify last year saying “We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason.” The platform now displays the standard play button by default on album pages instead of the play/shuffle combo.

The separation of the play and shuffle buttons comes as a welcome change to the status quo, however, it does seem to be quite ridiculous that Sportify is opting to lock out such a basic function behind a paywall and not make it available to its free users.

Redmi K50S Pro/Xiaomi 12T Pro may sport a telephoto camera

Last month, Lu Weibing, General Manager of the Redmi brand, revealed that the company will be launching a new Redmi K50 series smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. A few interesting details about this upcoming handset have now emerged.

Redmi K50 Pro
Redmi K50 Pro

The forthcoming Redmi-branded smartphone with a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset is rumored to go official as Redmi K50S Pro. According to Digital Chat Station, this phone will also arrive with an improved display, cameras, and battery/charging.

Most importantly, the tipster also suggests the presence of a telephoto camera. But it will be likely a normal 2x or 3x shooter instead of a periscope module.

The last Redmi phone with a zoom camera was the China-exclusive Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition whose 8MP telephoto camera was paired with a 3x lens and OIS.

Prior to that, both the Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20 Pro had an 8MP telephoto shooter with a 2x lens. The Redmi K series was expected to retain a proper wide +  ultra-wide +  telephoto camera setup after its debut. But unfortunately, that did not happen.

The Redmi K30 and the Redmi K30 5G came with useless 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors. Xiaomi’s popular 5MP telemacro camera with auto-focus debuted on the Redmi K30 Pro. This camera was later used by the entire Redmi K40 lineup (except Redmi K40 Gaming Edition) but has been dropped by this year’s Redmi K50 series in favor of useless 2MP macro snapper.

The Redmi K50S Pro is expected to release as Xiaomi 12T Pro in international markets. Hence, if the aforementioned information is true, customers outside mainland China will be also able to use a zoom camera on a flagship killer Xiaomi smartphone after a long time.

BGMI ban: a comment on the dilemma of the youth, national security or social prosperity?

The popular battle-royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) was banned as a result of a report from a central intelligence agency and a message from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity).

The report discussed offenses that could lead to cyber dangers by gathering user data for the purpose of conducting targeted cyberattacks against Indian users.

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI)

A senior government official claims that although the application has other problems, the biggest issue was that it was talking to servers that are either directly or indirectly situated in China. Other apps that have “rebranded” have also been confirmed by sources to be connecting with Chinese servers and are under investigation. After several iterations of study by the Indian officials, the government requested Google to delete the application from the Play Store.

According to News18, a senior government official on the condition of anonymity said, “The analysis also showed that this application has malicious code and also acquires a host of critical permissions, which could be misused for compromising user data for surveillance through camera/microphone, location tracking, and malicious network activities.”

The official added that such apps are a risk to India’s security grid and have the potential to harm the country’s sovereignty and integrity.

Although the official decision to ban BGMI from India has not yet been issued, MeitY has asked the affected companies to remove it from app marketplaces like Google Play and App Store. Following Krafton’s presentation of its case, a final conclusion regarding a complete ban is still impending.

According to the developer, efforts are being made to revive the game. The South Korean video game developer and distributor, recently released a statement in which it expressed its commitment to the Indian market and its optimism about the potential there. “At KRAFTON, the security and privacy of our user data are of utmost importance to us. We have always been compliant with all the laws and regulations in India, including data protection laws and regulations, and will continue abiding by them.”

BGMI SS in game ban

The report adds that a number of Chinese apps have rebranded themselves to circumvent the ban in India. They don’t have any servers in India and gather sensitive information like ‘location and audio’.

While BGMI was supposed to be a dedicated game for the Indian market and crossed over 100 million users in a year, clearly, the Indian government is still not happy with how the app is processing user data.

Altogether, the ban seems like a decent way to go if Krafton is unable to deliver a solid case for themselves. However, if the India-dedicated version comes out from the abyss, we shall see a revival of hope for the youth to socialize and entertain once again.

A few days ago, Qualcomm announced its all-new Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and W5+ Gen 1 processors built using the 4nm process. The chips, made especially for wearable devices, offer 2x power using half the power compared to their predecessor.

OPPO has not revealed the launch date for the upcoming smartwatches, nor has it revealed much about the devices’ specifications and features. But we expect to know more through teasers and leaks in the coming days.

If the reports are to be believed, then the OPPO Watch 3 series will have three models in the lineup and feature a high screen-to-body ratio and support for eSIM functionality. They will be running ColorOS Watch operating system.

Apart from OPPO, TicWatch has also confirmed that its upcoming flagship smartwatch models will come powered by the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 processor. The company is expected to launch TicWatch 4 Pro, the first device with W5+ chip, in the coming weeks.

Apple is expected to launch the next generation of iPhones dubbed the iPhone 14 series around September. This time around, we are expecting four phones to debut at the launch event including the vanilla iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Max, the iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

We have already reported that the vanilla and Max models will not be getting the ProMotion display(Apple’s marketing term for high refresh rate), and now, a new report from The Elec has revealed the type of panels that will be going on each of the models.

According to the report, the iPhone 14 (6.1-inch) and iPhone 14 Max (6.7-inch) will use LTPS backplanes. These will be made of the M11 material set. This is an exclusive material set that is currently used for the manufacturing of the Galaxy S22+ and S22 Ultra display panels.

The iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch) will use an LTPO display plane with ProMotion. The new panel will be made from Samsung’s M12 material set. This material set has not been used for any smartphone’s display panel yet and is set to debut with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

According to the report, All four iPhone 14 variants will have displays provided by Samsung, which has reportedly secured an order for 80 million screens. Additionally, LG will contribute by producing panels for both the standard iPhone 14 and the premium iPhone 14 Pro Max. The RS-L material set will be used to create them. With the previous RS-K set, LG was producing iPhone 13 panels last year.
