Apple Watch saves dentist’s life in India, Tim Cook responds to thank you note

There have been several stories of the lifesaving capability of the Apple Watch, especially in the United States and Europe. Yet another story has now been logged for the Apple Watch – and it happened in India. The incident which was related to a dentist drew appreciation from the man’s family, as well as an exciting and rare response from Apple CEO Tim Cook.Apple Watch Series 5

The fall detection feature in the Apple Watch has proved to be a revolutionary feature on the device that is proving critical in saving the lives of users of the smartwatch. But other features are also proving their relevance as potential lifesavers.

In the case of the Indian dentist, it was the ECG function that helped to save the man. A dentist in Haryana, India, named Nitesh Chopra was reported to have felt discomfort in his chest which led him to deploy the ECG function in his Apple Watch Series 6. The results of the ECG scan led Nitesh to consult a doctor. The subsequent medical analysis revealed that Nitesh had a blocked artery. He subsequently underwent treatment for the life-threatening condition. Interestingly, the ECG conducted by the health facility showed a strikingly similar result from that of the Apple Watch.

Early detection of such potentially life-threatening conditions is critical in the eventual treatment and recovery of patients, and Nitesh is thankful to Apple for the help his Apple Watch provided at an early stage of the health condition. The dentist, according to the reports, said he initially used his Apple Watch as a fashion accessory and he could not imagine that one day it will save his life. After the incident, Nitesh’s wife, Neha sent a thank you email to Apple CEO Tim Cook for saving her husband’s life. Cook responded by expressing his happiness that the couple sought clinical evaluation and received the desired care. He also thanked them for sharing their story with Apple.

1,600 cycles later, Oppo Find X5 Pro still retains 80% battery health

Last month at Mobile World Congress 2022, Oppo revealed their latest 240W SuperVOOC fast charging tech along with 150W fast charging which will soon debut on a OnePlus device. The brand also unveiled some details about their Battery Health Engine which is responsible for keeping the battery healthy and safe while charging over such insane speeds in the long run.

oppo find x5 pro

Now, in a press release, Oppo has shared the results of the latest lab tests of their fast charging technology in tandem with the Battery Health Engine which is already in use on the Oppo Find X5 Pro. The test results reveal even after 1,600 charging cycles the battery performs at 80% of its original capacity. Each cycle consists of charging a completely dead battery to 100% and then draining it back down to 0% again.

To put this into perspective, suppose that you are a power user using the Oppo Find X5 which features a 5000mAh battery with 80W SuperVOOC fast charging and manage to drain the battery completely through a days’ use. After using the device for 4 years and 4 months, you will still have 80% battery health i.e. just 20% battery degradation.

This ability to prolonge the battery life while using high-speed fast charging gives Oppo the upper hand over its competition as brands using conventional fast charging methods see their battery life reduced to 80% of its capacity in just 800 charging cycles.

OPPO 150W SuperVOOC

Oppo says, “As the leader of charging technology, OPPO knows that the future development of fast charging can not only stop at high power – it should also consider aspects such as safety, portability, compatibility, and battery lifespan. Here at OPPO, the company is taking big steps towards upgrading the world of smartphone charging to completely revolutionize the user experience of smartphones while contributing to the future sustainability of lithium battery technologies.”

OPPO 150W SuperVOOC

The brand’s latest 240W fast charging is not quite ready yet, but with a claim of 9 minutes to completely charge a 4500mAh battery, it will be interesting to see if the claims regarding battery health still stand after the 240W SuperVOOC charging is officially launched.

Google app on Android now lets you delete 15 minutes of search history in a jiffy

The Google app on Android has received a new feature that allows users to conveniently erase the last 15 minutes of search history.

Google spokesman, Ned Adriance, said in a statement to The Verge that the feature will be rolled out to everyone using the app in the coming weeks. He also revealed that Google was exploring pushing the feature to other platforms.

To try out the new feature, open up the Google app, tap on the profile picture icon on the top right corner of the screen, and then tap on ‘Delete last 15 minutes’ within the menu that appears.

The ‘Delete last 15 minutes’ feature sure has taken its time to arrive on Android. First announced back in May last year, it was rolled out to the Google app on iOS only a couple of months later, but gave a miss to Android for some reason.

Google already allows automatic search history deletion for periods of 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months, and also presents an option to remove particular search queries from the history. But the new feature allows users to delete history from a much shorter session, which is new.

Telegram ban lifted in Brazil after platform cooperates with Supreme court orders

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Sunday revoked the nationwide ban on messaging app Telegram after it successfully complied with the court orders and the country’s laws.

For those unaware, Brazil’s Supreme court had issued a ban on Telegram as the messaging app failed to comply with the court’s orders regarding an arrest warrant issued in the name of a blogger Allan dos Santos who is an ally of the current president Jair Bolsonaro and has been accused of spreading fake news via Telegram. The activist, a fugitive now based in the United States, has remained active on Telegram.

Telegram had also ignored requests from Brazilian authorities, including a police request to block profiles and provide information linked to the blogger. Telegram had also failed to name a legal representative in Brazil, unlike its competitors

The court had given Telegram till Sunday to comply with its orders. Telegram founder Pavel Durov responded by apologizing for the company’s “negligence” in replying to court orders and the company also complied by blocking the accounts spreading misinformation.

Telegram also appointed Alan Campos Elias Thomaz as its legal representative in Brazil, the court statement said, fulfilling a key request.

The Supreme Court statement of Justice Moraes said Telegram had shown “full compliance.” He also added, “I revoke the decision of complete suspension of the operation of Telegram in Brazil.”

This move by Moraes has given birth to debates regarding freedom of speech and fake news. The supporters of Bolsonaro on the right are calling this judicial overreach.

Jio, Airtel, Vi warn of possible 5G phone shortage if government mandates local certification

5G phone availability may see a sharp decline if the government goes forward with a new ruling that makes local testing and certifications of devices mandatory, Airtel, Jio, and Vi have warned. The telecom providers also suggested that the move will impact data consumption and restrict market access.

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently decided to bring 5G phones under phase-5 of the ‘Mandatory Testing & Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE)’ control scheduled from January 1st, 2023 (via Economic Times). Moving forward with this would also hamper India’s ambitions of becoming a global manufacturing base, stated the operators.

“We urge your intervention to instruct TEC to rescind the existing notifications covering all existing consumer electronic products under the MTCTE Certification regime and to desist in pursuing smartwatches, wearables, and smart cameras under Phase III and 5G mobile phones under the proposed Phase V of MTCTE,” the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said in a letter to telecom secretary K. Rajaraman, according to the report.

The COAI represents operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vi along with global companies like Apple, Google, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, and others. These have collectively urged DoT and TEC to not interfere in mobile manufacturing and leave it under the regulatory framework of the Bureau of Industrial Standards (BIS) and the Ministry of IT & Electronics (MeitY).

Industry executives added that MTCTE is quite a time-consuming procedure and would burden OEMs with compliance costs, restricting market access and delaying device launches.

As one senior executive put it: “TEC’s latest decision is causing unease and uncertainty in the industry as any potential disruption in the availability of 5G smartphones would automatically slow down the pace of adoption of 5G services in India, and also reduce overall data consumption levels, which would ultimately hit telco ARPUs.”
