Just a couple of days ago, OPPO launched its highly anticipated flagship series, which comprised of the Find X5 and Find X5 Pro. The two smartphones were its top end models, and now, a company official has claimed that the new lineup is seeing better sales than the previous generation.

The statement was made by the Chinese tech giant’s President, Liu Bo, in an interview (Via ITHome). According to the senior official, the Find X5 series sales are relatively higher than its predecessors. Furthermore, the executive added that the brand has also placed 10 million orders for its newly self developed NPU with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). For those unaware, the NPU in question is the MariSilicon X.

OPPO Find X5

This is an imaging chipset that aims on delivering better photographic capabilities like ultra clear 4K night scene videos, HDR videos, and more. Back when it first launched, the Find X5 series saw great sales in the Chinese market across multiple major e-commerce platforms like JD.com, Tmall, and even its official website in the country. In other words, the company is expecting to see even more sales in the arriving weeks. With its MariSilicon X chipset also performing well in the market, we can expect to see the NPU chip in upcoming smartphone models as well.

POCO X3 Pro gets MIUI 13 global stable with a rather boring changelog

The POCO X3 Pro is one of POCO’s top-selling models and saying it lies in the same league as the legendary POCO F1 in terms of popularity wouldn’t be a stretch. Both devices are highly performance-oriented, and as such brought flagship processors to ridiculously low price points. But while the POCO F1 has hit the end of the road with software support, the X3 Pro is still going strong and has now bagged MIUI 13.

The update carries version number 13.0.3.0.SJUMIXM and the ‘global’ tag, meaning it’s being rolled out to multiple regions. Sized 3.1GB, it also brings along Android 12 and the February security patch (via Xiaomiui).

poco x3 pro miui 13
Image: Xiaomiui

The changelog doesn’t mention much apart from the Android and security patch version, with the only highlighted feature addition being the ability to open apps as floating windows directly from the sidebar. This is paired with some optimizations for a couple of security apps:

System

  • ‌Stable MIUI based on Android 12
  • ‌Updated Android Security Patch to February 2022. Increased system security

More features and improvements

  • ‌New: Apps can be opened as floating windows directly from the sidebar
  • ‌Optimization: Enhanced accessibility support for Phone, Clock, and Weather
  • ‌Optimization: Mind map nodes are more convenient and intuitive now

Do note here that the MIUI 13 update for the POCO X3 Pro is still in its early stages of rollout and appears limited to Mi Pilot testers for now. If found free from bugs, it will be released widely. You can still give it a try after downloading it from here, though.

Russia smartphone market declines in 2021, will likely sink further over Ukraine invasion

In 2021, the smartphone market in Russia saw a slight fall over the previous year. But while there were many reasons for the initial decline, it seems that the negative trend might continue in 2022 as well, owing to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Russia

The news arrives from Counterpoint Research, who noted that the Russian handset market fell by 7 percent year on year in 2021. Although, it saw a 10 percent rise quarter on quarter in Q4 2021. During this time, Samsung continued to lead the market with a sizeable 30 percent market share, which was followed by Xiaomi with 23 percent and Apple with 13 percent market shares. The modest decline in 2021 was primarily attributed to slower upgrade cycles for consumers that were using mid to high end devices.

Furthermore, Research Director Tarun Pathak stated that “Chinese brands contributed 44% of the total market in 2021 compared to 46% in 2020. The decline can be attributed to Huawei’s loss, but Chinese brands are gaining again, especially Xiaomi, HONOR and realme. Xiaomi has been steadily increasing its share in the market along with Samsung and Apple.”

Russia

However, the region might see a sharper fall in 2022, with Pathak further adding that “The current war has changed the entire landscape and pushed the handset market into uncertainty. The fall in ruble will lead to a steep price rise in the short term due to limited inventory and suspended deliveries. Also, as sanctions gather pace, it will be hard for OEMs to make a conclusive device strategy.”

Samsung found to be artificially limiting performance on 10,000 apps

Samsung has been found to be putting performance limits on over 10,000 apps — a list that includes system apps, Google apps, and numerous third-party apps. The company says that this is to ensure the safety of consumers.

The limits are imposed through the Game Optimizing Service (GOS), which is supposed to prevent overheating and throttling issues by optimizing system performance. However, as Twitter user @GaryeonHan has discovered, the scope of the service extends far beyond games and meddles with apps too.

GOS has been pointed out to be imposing performance limits even when a device’s temperature is within a reasonable range. And as if that isn’t enough, the service actually goes soft on benchmarking apps like Geekbench, omitting them from the throttle list. This is a clear indication of trickery, as scores through such apps wouldn’t be representative of the actual experience.

In short, as long as the GOS continues its imposition in its current form, users will not be getting the performance they paid for. If you are one of the customers brandishing a brand new Galaxy S22 model, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1/Exynos 2200 under the hood may not be outputting at its maximum.

Regardless, Samsung is investigating the GOS issue and approaching it as seriously as the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, according to information from Naver, so we should be getting a response from them soon.

Tecno LF7 spotted with Helio G88 & Android 12, might be the POVA 3

Tecno is apparently gearing up to launch a new smartphone soon. The company had recently launched the POVA 5G and the Spark 8C, but now, a LF7 model was spotted on GeekBench, which might be the upcoming POVA 3.

Tecno

The Chinese smartphone maker’s LF7 model was just spotted on the popular benchmarking platform. This new model would be its first major release for this year. Notably, the POVA 3 had just been certified on FCC, so this model on GeekBench might be the same smartphone that received the certification. For those unaware, the POVA 2 had launched with the model number LE7 and the original POVA had the LD7 model number. So it seems likely that the LF7 is for the POVA 3.

Looking at the GeekBench listing, Tecno POVA 3 will launch with the MediaTek Helio G88 that is paired with up to 6GB of RAM. Furthermore, it will run on Google’s latest Android 12 operating system out of the box. The previous FCC listing also revealed that the device will support up to 33W fast charging. While the exact battery capacity wasn’t shared, the current models offer a humongous 7,000mAh battery pack. Meaning, we might see a similar if not a larger battery size.

Tecno

Apart from the specifications, the POVA 3 might also feature changes in design. Its camera module might also see a refresh. Although, the exact display size, camera specifications, and other finer details are currently unknown. Keep in mind that the report is also based on educated speculations and has not been confirmed by the company either. So take it with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

Design

None of these devices comes with a premium design. POCO M4 Pro and POCO X4 Pro 5G are built with a polycarbonate body and they are not very thin, but they look good and they also come with a borderless punch-hole display. Further, they sport the IP53 certification making them dust resistant and splash resistant. Between these two phones, the POCO X4 Pro 5G looks more premium thanks to its original color variants, but the M4 Pro is definitely more compact and lighter, that is the reason why I prefer this device when it comes to aesthetics.

Display

Both the phones are equipped with AMOLED displays, but the panel found on the POCO X4 Pro 5G is superior. It is an AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a diagonal of 6.67 inches, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and the HDR10+ certification, protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The POCO M4 Pro has a lower 90 Hz refresh rate, lacks the HDR10+ certification, and has a smaller 6.43-inch panel; the panel is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Fortunately, both the phones come with stereo speakers, but despite coming with AMOLED displays, they do not have an in-display fingerprint scanner: it is side-mounted.

Hardware/Software

The hardware department is the main advantage offered by the POCO X4 Pro 5G. It has a better processor: the Snapdragon 695 5G. It is not only better in terms of performance, but even in terms of energy consumption because it is built with a 6 nm production process instead of 12 nm. Further, this phone features 5G connectivity, unlike its internal rival. Unfortunately, both the phones still run Android 11, but they come with MIUI 13 out of the box and they will get the update to Android 12. The memory configurations available are the same, with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native storage.

Camera

The two affordable phones come with more or less the same camera departments with the exception of the main camera sensor. The POCO X4 Pro 5G comes with a superior 108 MP main camera: it is not a high-end sensor but it is way better than the 64 MP camera found on the POCO M4 Pro. In both cases, you get an 8 MP ultrawide camera, a 2 MP macro lens, and a 16 MP front camera. Unfortunately, these phones are not able to record 4K videos and they stop at 1080p.

Battery

The battery capacity of these two handsets is exactly the same: 5000 mAh. But the POCO X4 Pro 5G should provide a longer battery life because it has a processor built at 6 nm. Further, it offers faster charging speed because it supports 67W fast charging, while the POCO M4 Pro stops at 33W.

Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro vs Xiaomi POCO X4 Pro 5G: Price

Thanks to a launch promo, the starting price of the POCO M4 Pro in Europe is €199/$221, while the POCO X4 Pro 5G begins at €269/$299. If you are wondering which device offers the highest value for money, you have to consider the following factors. The POCO X4 Pro 5G has a superior display, a better chipset, 5G, a superior camera, and faster charging. But we are not talking about huge differences. Which one would you pick?

iPhone SE 3 screen protector listed on Amazon, likely launching March 10

Apple‘s upcoming budget iPhone SE 3 has been the subject of much speculation lately as we inch closer to a possible unveiling of the latest iteration of the iPhone SE series. An Apple event is scheduled for possibly March 8 and that could herald the launch of the iPhone SE 3. Although, a tradition with such Apple events is to formally announce them a week prior, which has not happened in the case of the iPhone SE 3.iPhone SE 3 2022

An accessory of the iPhone SE 3 has however surfaced online and it is said that the iPhone SE 3 screen protector will be available on March 10. The 5G iPhone SE case was leaked online according to iMore reports and this is fueling speculation that indeed the iPhone SE 3 could be launched within next week. The iPhone SE 3 screen protector was advertised by Belkin and described as a Protective Glass Film for Belkin iPhone SE and its design bears a close semblance with the expected iPhone SE 3.

The accessory was first spotted in an Amazon Japan listing on February 28 with the listing details indicating that it was for an iPhone SE 3rd generation. As well established, the iPhone SE 3 is the third generation of the iPhone SE lineup. We expect to therefore see the iPhone SE 3 being unveiled in Apple’s forthcoming spring event although a specific date is yet to be officially confirmed.

The iPhone SE 3 is a budget-friendly iPhone with the rumor rife that it could be sold for around $300 which will be lower than the cost of its predecessor. The iPhone SE 3 targets the mid-level segment of the market as Apple seeks to expand its reach beyond the upper reaches of the smartphone market. It will also possibly be powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, which is a high-performance chip ahead of flagship SoCs from MediaTek and Qualcomm.
