Here’s why the Google Pixel 6’s fingerprint reader is slow

The Google Pixel 6 series smartphones have just recently launched, but soon after its release, many users have come forward with complaints regarding its fingerprint scanner. Buyers found that the device has a slow and sometimes unreliable sensor, but this might be the case due to an intended design.

Google Pixel 6

Although under display fingerprint readers have been around for a while now, they were initially slower and sometimes unreliable as well. But in recent times, this difference between a regular fingerprint reader on the rear and the one under the display has more or less been eliminated. But, the search engine giant’s latest flagships are still facing criticism for what is described by many users as a slow fingerprint scanner. While it was hoped that the issue would more or less be fixed with a patch/update, official confirmation from the company has made things a bit more complicated.

According to an official tweet from Google,  the Pixel 6 features “enhanced security algorithms” that verify fingerprints. In other words, this may even cause the sensor to be delayed or even miss at times. The tweet further added that “these added protections can take longer to verify or require more direct contact with the sensor.” The company also advises users to keep their fingers clean and properly press it on of the sensor for optimum results. However, this does not address the various issues many have been facing with this sensor.

Google

Some believe that Google using an in display optical sensor might be the issue, but there are a number of smartphones that feature this technology without these issues. But there is still one silver lining, since the company has basically confirmed with the tweet that the issue is based on software. Meaning, it might be something solvable in the near future. Although, if we can discern one thing from the official tweet, it is that Google does not consider the slow sensor as an issue that needs to be fixed.

MediaTek chip prices rises by 15% due to supply constraints: Report

While MediaTek chipsets have seen a rise in demand, supply constraints and the global semiconductor shortage have made them short in supply. And Now, the company is following other chipmakers and is apparently raising the prices of its processors as well.

MediaTek

According to a UDN report, the Taiwanese chipmaking giant is raising the prices for some of its smartphone chips that are in high demand this month. The bump in prices are as high as 15 percent, so the company is also expected to see stronger performance and higher profits due to the robust momentum. Unfortunately, the company did not offer any comments on its chip price hike, although, sources close to the matter confirmed that MediaTek has raise the prices of smartphone processors.

The sources stated that 4G LTE enabled chips saw a sharp price rise since the primary focus of chipmaker’s is usually the 5G smartphone market. 4G chips now hold a smaller stake in the market but demand for 4G smartphones is still high in markets such as India where 5G networking is still not commercialized. Furthermore, the order of 4G handsets have caused the supply of LTE enabled phones to surpass the demand. Similarly, the brand’s rival, Qualcomm, is also expected to raise the prices of its chipsets, although, this has yet to be confirmed.

MediaTek Chipset White

The rise in prices of MediaTek processors is as high as 15 percent for 4G chips and 5 percent for 5G enabled chips. The primary reason for the hike in price is due to the increase cost of production from TSMC’s foundry. Previously, the company had also raised the prices of its WiFi chips by about 20 percent as well while we had also reported on other foundries like Samsung raising their prices.

Honor applies to trademark Magic Fold and Magic Wing in Europe

Honor has ambitious plans for itself in the smartphone maker and is making progress towards that and recently became the third-largest smartphone brand in China, beating major companies like Xiaomi, among others.

The company is now gearing up to launch its first foldable smartphone and now it appears that the device could be called Honor Magic Fold or Honor Magic Wing. This is because the company has applied for the trademark of these two names in Europe.

Honor Magic Fold Trademark

Honor Magic Fold Trademark

It is being reported that the Honor Magic Fold is a foldable smartphone but the Honor Magic Wing could be a foldable smartphone or a laptop. We expect to know more details related to this in the coming weeks.

Based on the information available so far, the first foldable smartphone from Honor will source its display panel from BOE and Visionox. It is also said that the device will have an internal folding design, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2.

Some reports have claimed that it will be featuring an inner foldable display of 8 inches and a cover display of 6.5 inches. There are also reports about the company gearing up to launch the Honor Magic X foldable phone, similar to the Huawei Mate X2 in terms of design.

Honor has continued to grow rapidly after it became an independent brand by splitting from Huawei last year and is now focusing on re-establishing its place and resuming operations in regions outside of its home country China. Along with that, the company also have some ambitious plan for market domination and is currently focusing on premium smartphones.

POCO F3’s new variant may launch with POCO M4 Pro 5G on November 9

POCO will be holding a global launch event tomorrow to unveil the POCO M4 Pro 5G. A fresh teaser from the brand suggests that it may announce a new variant of the POCO F3 alongside it.

Back in February, Redmi announced the Redmi K40, Redmi K40 Pro, and Redmi K40 Pro+ in China. The K40 was rebranded as Xiaomi Mi 11X in India and POCO F3 in global markets. The K40 Pro+ was rebranded as Xiaomi Mi 11X Pro in India and Xiaomi Mi 11i in global markets. It seems that the Redmi K40 Pro never made it to markets outside China.

Hence, there is a possibility that the new variant of the POCO F3 could be a rebranded version of the Snapdragon 888 powered Redmi K40 Pro. Probably, it may debut with the POCO F3 Pro moniker in the market as the successor for last year’s POCO F2 Pro. In all likelihood, it may arrive as the most affordable Snapdragon 888 powered flagship phone. It is just our assumption that the next POCO F3 variant could be a rebranded K40 Pro. It is advisable to wait until tomorrow’s launch event to know more about the device.

As far as the POCO M4 Pro 5G is concerned, it appears to be a rebadged version of the Redmi Note 11 5G that debuted in China recently. The M4 Pro 5G is expected to arrive with specs like a 6.6-inch IPS LCD FHD+ 90Hz display, a 16-megapixel front camera, and a 50-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual-camera system.

It will be equipped with Dimensity 810 chipset, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 128 GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. The handset may run on MIUI 12.5 based Android 11 and feature a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Moto Edge X teaser released, could be a new flagship

In August, Motorola announced the Moto Edge S Pro and Moto Edge Lite in China. These phones were rebranded versions of Motorola Edge 20 Pro and Motorola Edge 20. Fresh information reveals that the Lenovo-owned brand is now gearing up to launch a new phone called the Moto Edge X in China.

Today, the General Manager of Lenovo China Mobile Phone Business Department, Chen Jin took to Weibo to share a teaser of a new phone called the Moto Edge X. He did not share any information on the specs of the device but claimed that it is indefinitely powerful and full of expectations.

Moto Edge X

The Snapdragon 870 powered Edge S Pro arrived as the successor to the Edge S, driven by the same SoC. It seems that the upcoming Edge X could be a flagship device.

Qualcomm is expected to announce the next-generation Snapdragon 898 SoC at the upcoming Tech Summit event, which will be held by the end of this month. It is unclear whether the Edge X features the SD898 chip. Motorola did not launch a Snapdragon 888 SoC powered flagship this year. Hence, there is a possibility that it could be equipped with the SD888 chip. Hopefully, the company will share more details on the Edge X in the coming days.

In related news, a Motorola phone with model number XT2175-2 has received certification from the 3C authority of China. It revealed that the handset might carry support for 33W fast charging. A variant of this phone with model number XT2175-1 was spotted at Wi-Fi Alliance in September. The Edge S Pro supported 30W fast charging. Hence, it appears that the XT2175-2 phone that has emerged with a faster charger at 3C could be the upcoming Moto Edge X.

A banner for the event on the company’s website shows a boat tracking an infinity sign and carries a tagline that reads “More to come, soon!” without revealing any extra information. But, it’s safe to assume that the next-generation Snapdragon series flagship chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 will be officially announced on 30th November.

Qualcomm Tech Summit 2021

The upcoming Snapdragon 898 (SM-8450) will be manufactured by South Korean giant Samsung using its 4nm process. It is expected to run on Dual 3400 architecture with Adreno’s 730 graphics processing unit. It will bring the same octa-core chip with a frequency of 1.79GHz and can be overclocked by using higher power wattage.

Google Pixel 6 seems to have an overrated fast charging capability, new tests reveal

Google‘s latest Pixel 6 series models are signposted by the impressive camera setup in both models. The Google Pixel 6 Pro also got a top 10 rating in terms of its camera performance, but it seems there are still some issues relating to the stated fast charging potential of the new product. A recent test showed that the Samsung Galaxy S21 outperformed the Pixel 6 in charging speed and fingerprint recognition speed. Although the test details were not fully provided, another test has now shown that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s 30W charging capability may not be entirely correct.pixel 6 security app

A wired charging test of the Google Pixel 6 seems to confirm the charging speed is quite slower than what was officially stated by Google. The official Google Pixel 6 Support page had stated that up to 50% charge could be accomplished in 30 minutes, using the Google 30W USB-C Charger with USB-PD 3.0 (which is sold separately). However multiple tests with the official 30W USB-C Charger revealed that the maximum power that was obtained from the two Pixel 6 models was 22W, with an average of 13W over the full charging cycle. The tests seem to be extensive, with some other high-power USB Power Delivery PPS plugs from Samsung, Anker, and Elecjet, all getting maximum power of 22W from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

The results also show significantly higher average charging times for the Pixel 6 series compared with the Pixel 5, and also Samsung Galaxy S21. While the Pixel 5 has a 4,080mAh battery, the Pixel 6 series comes with a 5,000mAh battery. This observed drawback of the Pixel 6 series could be the result of several issues, although there had not been any reaction from Google at this time. It seems however that full disclosure of the charging cycle has not been provided by Google, although its claim of achieving 50% charge within 30 minutes seems valid from the tests.
