Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 telephoto lens uses the Hi-1337 sensor from SK Hynix

Samsung‘s latest foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has been graded as the most durable foldable phone around. That is because the Korean tech giant seems to have focused on that aspect. The Z Fold 3 doesn’t have anything spectacular in the camera segment as its setup is hardly different from the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The two models feature a 12MP wide-angle camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and OIS.

However, one aspect where the Z Fold 3 differs from its predecessor is in the aspect of the brand of the telephoto camera. A recent report emanating from South Korea ha revealed that the Z Fold 3’s telephoto lens was manufactured by Korean Nand manufacturer SK Hynix. The sensor in question is the Hi-1337 sensor. SK Hynix had announced the sensor in the early part of last year packing a 13MP resolution, 1µm pixels, and 2x optical zoom. One spectacular feature of the sensor is its flexibility, as it can be deployed as a selfie camera and a wide-angle camera.

What makes this news surprising is that SK Hynix is well-known as a NAND manufacturer and its camera sensor business occupy just 2% of the market. The market is dominated by Sony with a 40% market share and Samsung with a 22% market share. But Samsung chose to use a sensor by SK Hynix on its most expensive phone. Surprising!

Obviously, the focus of the Korean tech giant is on the folding mechanism and not on the camera aspect. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 even features a 4MP Under Display selfie camera that is anything but inspiring.

Last month, Motorola unveiled the Edge series including the Motorola Edge 20 and Motorola Edge 20 Lite. Now, yet again, the company has released these phones but, the new versions are for enterprises. Motorola has launched the Edge 20 and Edge 20 Lite Business Edition versions with enhanced safety and security-related features.

The Business Editions of the phones are nothing different than the regular versions in terms of specifications. The only difference is that the Business Editions come with Lenovo’s proprietary ThinkShield technology and have some software security features. It comes with two major OS updates and three years of security updates.

Moreover, the devices have the ‘Zero Touch’ feature that allows you to control your phone remotely from a desktop PC. This can be handy when you need to switch and share files between the phone and PC simultaneously.

The Motorola Edge 20 and Edge 20 Lite feature a 6.7-inch OLED display with a Full-HD+ resolution. The smartphones come with a high refresh rate and modern aspect ratio. The Edge 20 comes with a triple rear camera system with a 108MP main lens, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and lastly a telephoto lens. It boasts a 32MP camera at the front, The Edge 20 Lite on the other hand has a 108MP main, an 8MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP depth sensor.

At the helm, the Edge 20 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The Edge 20 Lite has the MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC. The Edge 20 has a 4,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support, whereas, there’s a 5,000mAh battery in the Lite with a 30W fast charging system.

JBL announces new Bluetooth speakers and headphones including the Flip 6

JBL took the wraps off of several new speakers today. The lineup includes a new Flip Bluetooth speaker, the Partybox 110 and Partybox 710, a $99 gaming headset, four new wireless earbuds, and a pair of headphones designed for kids.

JBL Flip 6

The Flip 6 arrives with a full dustproof and waterproof IP67 rating unlike the Flip 5 which only has an IPX7 waterproof rating. JBL has also included Bluetooth 5.1 for stronger and more stable connections. The battery life remains unchanged at 12 hours but you get a dedicated tweeter now. These upgrades have also resulted in a price increase to $130 when it becomes available for purchase in December.

JBL PartyBox 110 and PartyBox 710

JBL’s PartyBox line of bigger Bluetooth speakers also got two news models. The PartyBox 110 and PartyBox 710 have LEDs, USB and TRS input support, and an IPX4 rating. The 110 has a speaker output power of 160W while the 710, which has wheels to make moving it around easier, pushes it to 800W. The former is already available today for $399.95 while the 710 will be available in October in Europe for €749 and in December in the U.S. for $800.

JBL Tune 130NC and Tune 230NC

If you want earbuds with active noise cancellation, then the Tune 130NC and Tune 230NC have got you covered. Both are priced at $100/€99 and share similar features such as Bluetooth 5.2, support for Google Fast pair, and of course ANC. The difference is in the design and the drivers. The Tune 230NC has a stem design and 5.8mm drivers while the Tune 130NC has 10mm drivers and a stem-less design.

JBL Endurance RACE

The Endurance RACE is for those who enjoy running. The pair of earbuds has a TwistLock mechanism that helps to keep the earbuds secure when you are running. You also get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge and an IP67 rating. It is priced at $80.

JBL Reflect Flow PRO

The Reflect Flow PRO boasts the top features of the Tune 130NC and the Endurance RACE such as ANC, battery life of up to 10 hours, and an even higher IP68 rating. It also supports wireless charging and its case has a pretty neat LED bar instead of a dot like most earbuds have. Of course, it is also more expensive at $180.

JBL Quantum 350

JBL is going against headphones from Xbox, Sony, and Razer with its $99 Quantum 350 wireless headphones. The over-the-ears headphones have 40mm drivers and connect via a 2.4GHz wireless dongle for lower latency. The battery life is 22 hours and a 5-minute charge via its USB-C port will give you 1 hour of playback time.

JBL JR 460NC

JBL’s JR 460NC is designed for kids and it has noise cancellation so your kids are protected from loud noises. It has a battery life of 20 hours and when flat, your child can also switch to a wired connection using a removable aux cable. The JR 460NC is priced at $80 and will be available this month.

It is no longer news that Xiaomi is planning to enter the smart electric vehicle (EV) industry. But if you think that is a project for the future, you may want to have a rethink. The Chinese tech giant has officially announced the birth of the Xiaomi EV Company Limited, the vehicle through which it hopes to achieve the dream of manufacturing electric vehicles.

The announcement follows the completion of the registration of the new company with Lei Jun, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi, as the legal representative. The new company has a registered capital of RMB 10 billion (around $1.5 billion).

Towards the end of March 2021, Xioami’s founder Lei Jun first announced during a speech the company’s EV business initiative, hinting that the Chinese brand was planning to invest an estimated $10 billion in total in EV business over the course of the next 10 years, with an initial investment of RMB 10 billion (~$1.5 billion. Lei Jun will lead the team himself and the company has already recruited over 300 new employees who are experts in the sector.

The news comes not too long after the company announced the acquisition of an autonomous driving technology company Deepmotion Tech. However, a clear roadmap of how the new EV business will run is not yet gotten. We can’t say if the company is going to manufacture complete electric vehicles or would focus on manufacturing components (hardware and software) for EVs. One thing is for sure though, the company will develop self-driving technology. There is no doubt that Xiaomi is bringing some vigor to the market.

New Snapdragon Wear 5100 details reveal CPU performance may not get a big upgrade

The Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100+ are Qualcomm’s top chipsets for smartwatches that are available now. The chips, which have appeared in just a few watches, are expected to get a successor soon. New details have revealed that the new processor, expected to be called the Snapdragon Wear 5100 (SW5100), may not get a big upgrade in terms of performance, no thanks to its CPU.

The guys at Winfuture did some digging and found out that the current version of the SW5100 that Qualcomm is testing has four Cortex-A53 cores just like its predecessors and not Cortex-A73 cores. However, the clockspeed is unknown. The source also states that the chipset is being tested with different configurations that includes LPDDR4X RAM, which is definitely an upgrade over the LPDDR3 RAM of the Snapdragon 4100 series; 1GB or 2GB of RAM; and 8GB or 16GB of eMMC-flash storage. There are also some configurations that have two cameras ( a 5MP sensor and a 16MP sensor).

Just like the Snapdragon Wear 4100 series, Winfuture reports that the Snapdragon Wear 5100 may also have a co-processor that consumes significantly less power and handles tasks such as sleep tracking and heart rate monitoring.

The Snapdragon Wear 5100 will be manufactured by both Samsung and China’s SMIC according to details gotten from the supply samples. It is believed that Qualcomm may be targeting Chinese manufacturers with these new chip.

There is no news yet on when the processor will be announced but it appears there is still a bit of waiting to do. Qualcomm may also want to delay the release so that more manufacturers can pick up the Snapdragon Wear 4100 series which powers just a few smartwatches.

BOE beats LG Display to emerge as the world’s largest LCD manufacturer in 2020

U.K research firm Omdia has published a report of the large LCD panel market for 2020. The report covers LCD panels used for smart TV and shows that China’s BOE Technology Group overtook LG Display to emerge as the number one manufacturer in this segment for the first time.

The data shows that BOE’s share in 2020 reached 22.9%, an increase of 2.2% from 2019. The LCD market used to be LG Display’s stronghold but BOE supposed the Korean company surpassing LG Display, which was previously ranked first.

LG Display’s share fell to 17.2% which is a 6.7% reduction from the 23.9% market share recorded in 2019. The third spot is occupied by Taiwanese display maker AU Optronics with 11.9%. Cumulatively, the top 3 large LCD makers control 52% of the market in the period under review.

Apart form BOE technology, another Chinese company in the top 5 ranking is TCL’s China Star Optoelectronics which saw a 2.5% increase in its shipment to emerged as the fifth largest large LCD manufacturer with an 8.8 % share of the market. The Chinese company edged out Samsung from the 5th spot which it occupied in 2019. What Samsung loses in the LCD market, it will surely gain in OLED panel shipments as it is ranked as the leading manufacturer of OLED panels.

It is worth mentioning that, according to data from the research firm CINNO Research, in the first half of 2021, global LCD TV panel shipments reached 130 million units, an increase of 2.5% year-on-year. That means the LCD market will once again see a record shipment this year and Chinese manufacturers will likely take the larger share of the market.

Corning: Liquid Lens has applications in medical, industrial and AR fields

Earlier this year, we had reported on LG Innotek and Corning working on Liquid Lens technology that could seemingly benefit the smartphone photography. Now, an from the latter firm had touted the various benefits of this new lens technology.

In an interview with TheElec, Frederic Laune, business manager at Corning Varioptic Lenses stated that liquid lens can help with changing local lengths in cameras. The manager also added that the company is looking to expand the applications of this technology in various other industries like the medical and industrial fields. For those unaware, liquid lens is basically filled with liquid materials inside the physical lens that can change the curvature of the lens by using currents and voltages to control the focal length of the camera.

Laune stated that liquid lens can be used to solve the focal length changing issue, which is when the distance between the camera and subject is constantly changing. He said that the new lens technology can basically focus on a particular object even if there were varying distances in between. Conventional lens technology usually had the lens being placed close to the image sensor or further away from it to maintain the focus on the object. However, these mechanical solutions are vulnerable to external shock and increase the power consumption of devices while being slow.

So, liquid lens technology aims to be a power efficient alternative, which is more effective and quicker as well. Furthermore, this is the reason why industrial cameras rarely use these lens solutions, as per the Manager. Liquid lens is also durable against shakes external shocks, making it practical in various fields like augmented reality.

Apple announced lossless audio for Apple Music this year. However, the feature only works with wired earphones. Huawei has launched a new version of the highly popular AX3 Pro router. The router was first launched in March last year alongside the AX3 router in March last year and has been a hot-selling product. The new version utilizes a Qualcomm chipset instead of the Kirin chipset on last year’s model.

The Huawei AX3 Pro wireless router from last year featured a 1.4GHz quad-core Kirin W650 chip but this new version will be powered by a dual-core Qualcomm chip with a 1GHz clock frequency. Whereas last year’s version has the model number WS7200, this version comes with the model number WS7206.

Apart from the new Qualcomm processor onboard, the new AX3 Pro still retains the design and specifications of the previous model. This includes a four-antenna design with an independent amplifying chip. The 2.4GHz chip has an amplifying parameter of 27dB, and the 5GHz band parameter is 23.5dB.

In terms of the specs, the router supports 1024QAM modulation, 160MHz bandwidth, 2.5GHz rate 574Mbps, and 5GHz rate 2402Mbps. The product supports NFC function and features Huawei’s HarmonyOS 2. A mobile phone equipped with HarmonyOS or Android OS can automatically connect to Wi-Fi without entering a password by touching the NFC area of the router.

The Huawei AX3 Pro router supports Huawei’s one-touch networking, mobile acceleration, online lesson acceleration, remote office acceleration, and child online protection.

Logitech Bolt dongle will offer better encryption on its new wireless mice and keyboards

Logitech is planning to launch a number of new mice and keyboards, but to better appeal to businesses, the company is placing an emphasis on privacy and encryption for these products. So, the brand is also launching the new Logi Bolt USB A dongle that will aim to reduce latency in crowded places while also improving security as well.

The new accessories from the consumer electronics maker will securely connect to computers and mobile devices via Bluetooth Low Energy without any dongle. Although, the Bolt dongle is also based on Bluetooth connectivity but will arrive with a more secure tether (security mode 1, level 4). To put things simply, the use of Bluetooth in the Bolt USB dongle is far less prone to hacking than Logitech’s Unifying 2.4GHz receiver, which is vulnerable to the “MouseJack” exploit.

In a new white paper from the company, the Bolt will feature security mode 1, level 4 that utilizes Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman P-256 (ECDH) and AES-CCM encryption. As per the company, these features would ensure that “a Logi Bolt wireless product and its Logi Bolt receiver can only communicate with each other.” The company also added that its direct Bolt wireless connections are Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliant. The Logi Bolt USB dongle offers an improved range that can reach up to 33 feet or about 10 meters even in congested areas.

Notably, one Bolt dongle can connect up to six accessories to your computer. It is also compatible with multiple operating systems like Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, ChromeOS, and AndroidOS. ColorOS update timeline revealed for OnePlus 8/8T, OnePlus 7/7T series

OnePlus now uses ColorOS on its smartphones in China. Even in global markets, the company has started shipping the same software but continues to call it OxygenOS. Earlier this year, the brand announced that its older flagship phones will be upgraded to ColorOS in its home country. These devices are scheduled to receive the update in 2022. Ahead of that, the firm has now shared a rough timeline for Open Beta and Stable releases.

Oneplus 8 Pro All Colors Featured — OnePlus 8 Pro

According to an official announcement post on OnePlus Community China, all the OnePlus flagship smartphones released in China in the last two years will be updated to ColorOS by the end of 2022.

OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T will be the first to receive the ColorOS Open Beta update in early 2022. The ColorOS Stable update for these handsets will be released in the first half of 2022.

On the other hand, the ColorOS Open Beta update for OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro will be delivered in mid-2022. Whereas, the ColorOS Stable update will be made available in the second half of 2022.

OnePlus previously said that it could not upgrade these phones sooner because of various bugs. Hopefully, the company does not roll out a broken software next year.

Having said that, OnePlus does not mention the version of ColorOS these handsets will be receiving. Anyway, we believe that they will most likely get the upcoming ColorOS 12 based on Android 12.

1More announced the update to its ComfoBuds TWS Bluetooth earbuds dubbed ComfoBuds 2.0. The earbuds come with a semi-in-ear design and will be available in black and white for 269 yuan (around $42).

The 1More ComfoBuds 2.0 brings a semi-in-ear design with a conical handle design and a gradually narrowing stem. The earbuds are quite lightweight, with a single earbud just weighing in at 4.3 grams. Both the earbuds and case weighs a total of 36.5 grams.

The ComfoBuds 2.0 comes with upgraded 13.4mm large-diameter dynamic drivers with liquid crystal molecules (LCP) and PU composite diaphragm. The earbuds support both AAC and SBC audio codecs. It features 12 sound effects calibrated in collaboration with SonarWorks. The earbuds come with IPX5 water resistivity certification. The TWS earbuds offer touch control which can be customised using the 1More Music app.

The earbuds use Bluetooth 5.2 for connectivity and come with gaming mode, which reduces the latency to as low as 90ms. The ComfoBuds 2.0 offers Smart Call Noise reduction, but it misses out on Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). The smart call noise reduction feature uses a digital signal processing algorithm to weaken the environmental noise during a call, making human voices clearer.

The earbuds offer a battery life of 6 hours of continuous playback and 24 hours with the case. 1More claims that 15 minutes of charge would last you for 3 hours. The company says that TWS earbuds can play 480 songs or 16 movies continuously on a single charge, and these earbuds would last you through a 7200KM of high-speed rail travel.

Apple is apparently planning on bringing a series of new health related features to its Apple Watch. A new report has revealed that the company is working on blood pressure and temperature tracking feature for its popular wearable.

The news arrives from Wall Street Journal (Via MacRumors), the Cupertino based giant is working on a number of health based features like a thermometer for fertility and sleep tracking, sleep apnea detection, and diabetes detection as well. Furthermore, it is even planning on bringing updates for existing modes. According to sources close to the matter, internal documents have revealed that the brand is working on these new health features that are expected arrive sometime in 2022 or maybe even later.

The report adds that the iPhone maker might be considering to roll out the thermometer feature to the Apple Watch as early as next year. This feature is reportedly based around fertility planning, offering women insights into their ovulation cycle alongside improved detection of patterns for sleep tracking. The feature might even be able to detect when the user has fever in the future. Meanwhile, the blood pressure monitoring system could help detect hypertension by mapping rising pressure.

Similar to the temperature tracking feature, the company plans on releasing the blood pressure monitoring technology in 2022 as well. Although, the reports add that it is facing difficulties in perfecting the technology. This is also reflected with the sleep apnea detection feature as well as the company is struggling to make the readings more often without draining the Apple Watch’s battery life. Keep in mind that these features are still under study and development could be delayed or even canceled.
