OPPO and vivo are indeed working on their in-house ISP chips: Report

Earlier this year, Xiaomi debuted its first self-developed ISP (Image Signal Processor) chip called Surge C1. This silicon is used in the company’s first foldable smartphone – Mi MIX Fold. Months later, news broke out that both OPPO and vivo are also working on their in-house ISP chips. Now more information about these developments has appeared online.

OPPO Find X3 Pro

According to Tencent’s ‘Deep Web’ report (via ITHome), Chinese handset makers OPPO and vivo are indeed working on their self-developed ISP chips.

The report says that OPPO has assigned thousands of people to this project. Its in-house ISP silicon is said to make its way to consumer products as soon as early next year with the launch of the OPPO Find X4 series.

On the other hand, vivo reportedly set up a secret team codenamed “Wyatt Shadow” for its self-developed chips two years ago. This team is said to have around 500-600 members. Their first product will be an ISP chip, which is expected to make its debut on the vivo X70 series slated to release in the second half of 2021.

ISP chips are just the beginning. As per the report, OPPO and vivo are also working on in-house SOCs (System-on-chip) to replace Qualcomm and MediaTek silicons in the future.

Ever since the US banned HUAWEI, Chinese tech giants have been investing more in indigenous technology to face the worst-case scenario. This move not only safeguards the future of these companies but will bring in more competition, which will further lead to better innovation.

PUBG might be going Free to play soon: Rumor

A new rumor has suggested that PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds might be going free to play in the near future. The title is one of the most popular battle royale game in the PC gaming market and is apparently seeking to be accessible to everyone soon.

The news arrives from a tweet from PlayerIGN, who stated that the game will become free to play in the future. As per the dataminer, the decision to go free to play, however, will be largely based on the reception of its current playerbase. In other words, the studio behind PUBG will track the player’s response in a free to play week that is reportedly set to arrive sometime next month. So, the game could go free depending on whether there is an influx of new players and that the existing players react positively to the change.

PUBG

Notably, PlayerIGN also added that PUBG had aimed on becoming free to play back in 2019. Although, the studio did not receive the player response that they had wanted back during the free to play test run in 2019, so this decision was scrapped. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates. Also, let us know in the comments section down below what you feel about the game possibly going free to play.

The new upcoming stylus is touted to be the “first-ever S Pen designed specifically for foldable phones.” However, nothing more about the product is known at this time. This is not it, TM Roh has also confirmed that there won’t be a Galaxy Note device getting launched this year, saying that instead of launching a Note-series this time around, the company will “further broaden beloved Note features to more Samsung Galaxy devices.”

He adds that the “third generation of foldable devices will open up amazing new multitasking capabilities and enhanced durability.” Talking about the Galaxy Z Flip 3, he says that the phone will have “an even more refined style, armed with more durable, stronger materials.”

It’s not just the hardware but Samsung is also focusing on software to improve the user experience. Roh says that the company has worked with Google “to enrich our foldable ecosystems with popular apps and services.”

For the upcoming foldable smartphone, Samsung has lined up more partner apps to take advantage of the fold-out format. We can expect support for hands-free video calling with Google Duo, watching videos in “Flex” mode on YouTube, and multitasking in Microsoft Teams, among others.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event on 11th August, Samsung is expected to launch Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4 series, Galaxy Buds 2, and S Pen. The upcoming foldable phones are expected to be around $200 cheaper than their predecessor as the company is looking to make them more affordable.

Intel will now manufacture chips for Qualcomm; aims to lead foundry market by 2025

Intel has today announced Qualcomm as the first major customer for its new Intel Foundry Services business. Qualcomm, which is powering most of the premium Android smartphones with its Snapdragon lineup of chips, will have its chips manufactured by Intel in the coming years.

For manufacturing chips, Intel will be using its upcoming 20A process which will use new transistor technology to help reduce chip power consuption. As of now, there’s no information about which products from Qualcomm will be manufactured by Intel and when the Intel-made Qualcomm products will arrive in the market.

Intel

Apart from Qualcomm, Intel has also announced Amazon Web Services as another new customer for the foundry chip business. However, Amazon won’t be using Intel’s chip-making technology but will use packaging technology. It is basically a process of assembling chips and “chiplets” or “tiles” by stacking them up.

Intel 20A will rely on two new technologies — RibbonFET and PowerVia. RibbonFET is Intel’s first new transistor architecture since FinFET in 2011. It delivers faster transistor switching speeds while achieving the same drive current as multiple fins in a smaller footprint.

On the other hand, PowerVia is Intel’s industry-first implementation of backside power delivery, which optimizes signal transmission by eliminating the need for power routing on the front side of the wafer. Also, Starting as early as 2025, the company will tap a new generation of machines from ASML that use extreme ultraviolet lithography.

The company is also changing the naming method for its technologies. Intel 7 offers 10-15% performance-per-watt increase versus Intel 10nm SuperFin, based on FinFET transistor optimizations. It will be used in products like Alder Lake for clients in 2021 and Sapphire Rapids for the data center.

Intel Roadmap 2025

The Intel 4 uses EUV lithography to print small features using ultra-short wavelength light. It is expected to offer around 20% performance-per-watt increase, along with area improvements. It will be ready for production in the second half of 2022 for products shipping in 2023.

Intel 3 leverages further FinFET optimizations and increased EUV to deliver an approximately 18% performance-per-watt increase over Intel 4. It will be ready to begin manufacturing products in the second half of 2023.

With these new customers and the latest technologies, Intel is expecting to regain its market lead by 2025. In the foundry services business, the company will be competing against market leaders like TSMC and Samsung.

Samsung starts testing One UI 3.1.1, release set for late August

Samsung released One UI 3.0 based on Android 11 in late 2020. Earlier this year, the company introduced One UI 3.1 with the launch of the Galaxy S21 series. Six months later, the South Korean tech giant has now started testing One UI 3.1.1.

Samsung One UI Logo Featured

According to TizenHelp, a moderator on the Samsung Members community forum has revealed that One UI 3.1.1 will be released for the Galaxy S21 series around the end of August. This means the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, which are expected to hit the shelves about the same time will likely debut with this version of the software.

Further, as per the CheckFirm app (via SamNext), Samsung has already started testing One UI 3.1.1 for the Galaxy S21 series. Hence, the update should indeed arrive by the end of next month.

Unfortunately, nothing is known about the next iteration of One UI. Going by One UI 2.5 and One UI 1.5, which are the predecessors of One UI 3.1.1, the new version should mostly bring new features for premium smartphones and tablets.

We expect to learn more about these features and supported devices with the launch of Samsung’s next foldables. Maybe, we will get to know about them beforehand via firmware code. Until then, all we can do is wait.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 design leak reveals triple-camera setup

Last year, Microsoft launched its Surface Duo as the brand’s first dual-screen device. The Redmond-based technology giant has been working on its successor, dubbed Surface Duo 2, and details about the upcoming device have now surfaced online.

The design of the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has leaked online, which reveals that the device will be featuring a triple-camera setup on the back. The sensors are placed vertically in the top-left corner on a rectangular module.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2

As for the overall look of the device, it remains the same as the current-generation model, having two displays connected by a hinge in the middle, a glass back panel, and a Surface logo on the back.

The camera is expected to deliver better results as reports indicate that Microsoft is planning to use Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The company is also said to be focusing on improving the software experience.

One of the major drawbacks for the Surface Duo was its internals, being powered by a couple of years old Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. However, in the upcoming version, the company is said to be using the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Further, the device is expected to have support for 5G connectivity as well as NFC.

Earlier, it was reported that the Microsoft Surface Duo 2 has the codename “Zeta.” As of now, there’s no information about when the company is planning to launch this new model but it’s unlikely to happen this year. We expect to know more details about the Surface Duo 2 in the coming weeks and months.

HMD Global has made it a tradition to relaunch classic Nokia feature phones since it got the license for the Nokia brand name a few years ago. Today, the latest classic phone to get a modern release is the Nokia 6310. The 2021 edition comes in an elegant but familiar new body.

Nokia 6310

The new Nokia 6310 keeps the candy bar design of the original launched back in 2001 but with some modern additions. While the claw-like speaker grille of the original would have been nice, the new version settles for a simple horizontal slit for the earpiece. Gone is the monochrome 6-line display and in its place is a curved color one that is also bigger. The 2021 version also packs a rear camera.

With respect to its specs, the Nokia 6310 has a 2.8-inch display. It is powered by a UNISOC 6531F processor and has 8MB of RAM and 16MB of storage. The spec sheet says it runs the Series 30+ (S30+) operating system. The icons are bigger and the menu is zoomed in to make it easier to read. There is also an accessibility mode that even further simplifies the menu.

The phone has a single 0.3MP camera on the back along with an LED flash. There is a MicroSD card slot and users will be able to add up to 32GB of additional storage. It has Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, dual SIM support, and FM radio (wired and wireless dual-mode).

The 1150mAh battery capacity is just a tad bigger than that of the 2001 model but Nokia claims it will provide more than 7 hours of talk time and will last weeks in standby mode. The battery is removable and Nokia ships the phone with a charger and micro USB cable.

The video advert shows the Nokia 6310 in three colors but users will only be able to purchase the phone in Black and Dark Green. I know a lot of folks will agree that the latter is the finest of them all.

You can pick up the Nokia 6310 for €59.90 in Europe on the official Nokia Mobile website.
