OPPO R17 and R17 Pro New Year’s Edition are official; Specifications, features and price

As OPPO had confirmed in the previous week, it has launched the New Year’s editions for OPPO R17 and R17 Pro smartphones through a dedicated event in Shanghai today. In terms of specifications, both phones carry the same specs as their regular versions. However, the R17 and R17 Pro New Year’s Edition have unique design since they sport red bodies that symbolize the New Year.  According to the Chinese calendar, 2019 is the year of pig. Hence, the Chinese manufacturer has engraved a golden logo of a piglet on the bottom of the rear shells of both phones. Also, these phones are running on the specialized designed New Year themed UI.

The glass rears of the OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro New Year’s Edition have warm red color with gradient effect. The paintjob has been inspired by the traditional paper-cutting art of China while the golden of the piglet has a floating effect.

The OPPO R17 New Year’s edition is fitted with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display that produces FHD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. It is fueled by Snapdragon 670 chipset. The waterdrop notch of the display is the home for the front-facing 25-megapixel selfie camera. The rear shell of the phone has a 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup. The handset is backed by a 3,500mAh battery and it includes 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Other features of the smartphone include support for VOOC charging and Hyperboost technology.

Mijia to announce new Smart Air Conditioner on December 20

Xiaomi’s Mijia has released a poster that says it will unveil a new smart air conditioner on Thursday, December 20. The new air conditioner comes five months after the first Mijia Air Conditioner.

The poster has the figure 1 written in green. Some say that it may mean the air conditioner has a level 1 energy efficiency rating. However, we think it may mean the Air Conditioner has a 1HP compressor. The model released back in July has a 1.5HP compressor.

The design is expected to be similar – a white anti-UB abs polymer resin body and a circular LED display. If it has a lower power rating, that means its cooling capacity will be less. Just like the original, Xiaomi may also include a heater so it serves a dual function.

Huawei’s total shipments for 2018 may cross 200 million units

Apart from the slew of products it announced today at its event, Huawei also disclosed its shipments for the year. According to Huawei’s president of mobile division, He Gang, the company is set to cross 200 million units in shipments by December 25, 2018.

Huawei Shipments 2018

Back in July when Huawei unveiled the Nova 3, Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, revealed they had shipped 100 million smartphones this year. This means Huawei has been able to double that figure in just five months.

This year has been a bag of mixed blessings for Huawei. At the beginning of the year, it was supposed to launch its first phone on America’s network AT&T, but the deal fell through. The reason behind the failure was said to have been due to security concerns raised by the US Senate. So what would have been a big deal for Huawei didn’t pan out.

The brick wall it met at the beginning of the year might have slowed it down but it didn’t stop it from becoming the second largest smartphone company in the world in August, pushing Apple to third place in terms of market share.

Huawei Shipments

Recently, Huawei suffered another setback as its Chief Financial Officer, Sabrina Meng Wanzhou, who is also the daughter of the company’s founder, Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Canada based on US fraud allegations. She has now been granted bail but will appear in court in February.

Samsung to reportedly showcase its 5G smartphone at MWC 2019

Samsung is set to launch its upcoming flagship lineup — Galaxy S10 ahead of Mobile World Congress in February. Now, a new report from South Korea suggests that the company will also showcase its 5G smartphone during the MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Spain.

This isn’t surprising given that MWC is one of the biggest annual tradeshows for mobile devices and there were rumors suggesting that the South Korean giant could unveil a 5G smartphone at the event. The report also adds that the Galaxy S-series will be marking its 10th anniversary at the event.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus (5G Smartphone)

The said 5G smartphone is expected to be a variant of Galaxy S10. However, it’s noteworthy that not all the Galaxy S10 models are 5G compatible. It appears that the idea behind announcing the 5G smartphone during Mobile World Congress 2019 is to mark the brand’s entry as one of the first companies to launch a 5G smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S10 will have three models — Galaxy S10, S10 Lite, and S10 Plus and another variant made of ceramic which will be 5G-enabled. This 5G smartphone may only be produced in limited numbers and released in select markets.

Initially, the 5G phones from Samsung could be limited to its home country South Korea and the United States given that commercial 5G networks are expected to go live in South Korea and the US in the first half of 2019.

An earlier report hinted that the Samsung’s 5G phone will come with a 6.7-inch display and is tipped to feature a rear-mounted quad camera setup, a selfie camera, and a 3D sensing ToF camera. Powered by SD855 SoC, the phone may have up to 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage. As for the color options, the phone will be available in Black and White colors.

Samsung has already confirmed a 5G smartphone for both Verizon and AT&T. Also, the company has confirmed another 5G device for AT&T arriving in the second half of 2019, which is likely to be the next Galaxy Note-series smartphone.

Huawei Nova 4 Launched with the worlds first 48MP Sony IMX586 Camera!

Gone are the days when flagships got all the attention. Now is the age of the upper mid-rangers and in some ways, this special category of smartphones are getting pretty solid attention. Remember the world’s first in screen (infinity O) camera smartphone from Samsung which was actually a mid-range Galaxy device? Huawei is going for a similar strategy and the newly launched Huawei Nova 4 is interesting in a lot of aspects. First, it joins the Galaxy A8S by featuring an in-screen front-facing camera, which allowed the company to make the phone nearly full screen. But Huawei claims it takes things to the next level by using the world’s smallest camera setup up front.

Huawei Nova 4 screen camera compared

Huawei has added the 25MP front on the top left corner of the phone which the company claims will least interfere with the app area. The Nova 4 hides the ambient light sensor inside and uses a micro-slot earpiece to maximize the screen real estate. The company adds that the front camera on the phone is the smallest module in the mobile industry right now. It measures just 3.5mm and ensures that the overall diameter of the front camera opening is just 4.5mm, which is less as compared to competitor offerings with over 6.5mm+ diameter slits.

Worlds smallest front camera on Nova 4

The front design is definitely the highlight of the Nova 4. However, even at the back, the company has ensured that fans get a lot of color options. The phone comes in special Red, White (similar to P20 Pro’s color variant), and Aurora Blue color options. Apart from this, there’s a basic black color as well.

Nova 4 red
The Nova 4 in Red definitely looks sexy!

Huawei Nova 4 Camera Specs

The phone features three camera sensors at the back, one wide-angle sensor, a primary sensor in the middle and a third small sensor for bokeh effect. There are two camera configurations available, one with a standard 20MP primary camera and a higher end model with the worlds largest 48MP (IMX586) smartphone camera sensor from Sony. We have been hearing a couple of manufacturers working on this 48MP sensor including Xiaomi, but Nova 4 is the first phone to be equipped with this super-high-resolution sensor. The upcoming Honor V20 is also going to feature the same sensor, but we are still waiting for its official launch.

Nova 4 all colors series

The standard model comes in the following camera configuration.

  • Top Sensor — 16MP 117 degrees Wide-Angle f/2.2
  • Middle Sensor — 20MP Primary f/1.8
  • Bottom Sensor — 2MP for Bokeh f/2.4

The higher-end model comes in the following camera configuration.

  • Top Sensor — 16MP 117 degrees Wide-Angle f/2.2
  • Middle Sensor — 48MP IMX586 Primary f/1.8
  • Bottom Sensor — 2MP for Bokeh f/2.4

The camera setup comes with support for HDR Pro, beauty mode, 960 fps slo-mo video recording, a closed-loop motor for super fast focus, EIS, 3D Emojis, and scene + object recognition. So, pretty much what you expect from a 2018 Huawei smartphone! It’s clear that the company is positioning the Nova 4 as a very strong camera smartphone.

Huawei Nova 4 Specs

The phone comes with last year’s Kirin 970 (that’s where the company’s cut costs) with up 8GB of RAM configuration. There are other standard features such as GPU Turbo for flawless gaming experience too. The display up front is a 6.4-inch panel with 2310 x 1080p resolution and takes the screen to body ratio up to 86.3%, a solid step up from the 83% on the Nova 3 model with a notch.

Nova 4 white 2

While the company didn’t officially reveal the battery capacity at the event, we know the Nova 4 features a 3750 mAh battery with 9V 2A fast charging. It even supports dual standby dual 4G VoLTE connection. Further, it comes with EMUI 9.0.1 out of the box based on Android Pie.

Huawei Nova 4 Price & Availability

The Nova 4 with 8+128GB storage and 20MP camera is priced at 3099 Yuan ($450), while the 8+128GB variant with the large 48MP resolution camera is priced at 3399 Yuan ($493)! There are other variants too, but Huawei hasn’t revealed any further pricing details yet.

Pre-sale starts today at 4.08PM CST and the phone will go on sale on December 27 at 10.08AM in China.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10 Lite to come with exclusive color options

Samsung is all set to launch its upcoming flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S10 lineup, at an Unpacked event during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2019. It’s already known that the Galaxy S10 lineup will include three models — Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10 Plus. There will also be another variant made of ceramic, which is said to feature 5G connectivity.

From what we’ve seen so far, it appears that the Galaxy S10 Lite will take on the Apple iPhone XR. Now, the new report suggests that the South Korean company will also offer colorful options for the smartphone, similar to the iPhone XR.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Colors

According to the latest report, the Galaxy S10 Lite will be available in five color options — Black, White, Blue, Green, and Yellow. The S10 and S10 Plus will have four colors — Black, White, Blue, and Green. The ceramic edition will be available in Black and White colors only.

These are the color options that will be offered at the time of the launch. However, it’s not confirmed if all the color options will be available worldwide or some colors will be limited to a few regions. Given the track record of Samsung, we expect the company will keep launching new color variants for the Galaxy S10 lineup every couple of months after its initial launch.

Reports indicate that the Galaxy S10 Lite (SM-G70F) will be featuring a flat 5.8-inch Super-AMOLED screen with Quad HD screen resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone is unlikely to feature an in-display camera hole.

The phone is expected to feature a regular rear-mounted fingerprint scanner or an optical under-display fingerprint scanner. The S10 and S10 Plus, on the other hand, are expected to come equipped with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Depending on the market, the Galaxy S10 series will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820.

As per the reports, Samsung will be holding the Samsung Unpacked event on 20th February, before the MWC 2019, to announce the Galaxy S10 series. The MWC 2019 will be held in Barcelona, Spain between February 25 and February 28. The Galaxy S10 devices are expected to be available for pre-order on the same day of the announcement and are expected to go on sale from 8th March.

Xiaomi M1901F9T gets certified by TENAA, features 5.84-inch display and 2,900mAh battery

An unnamed Xiaomi smartphone which carries model number M1901F9T has passed through TENAA, revealing a few of the phone’s specifications. While the name of the handset is not yet confirmed, it is speculated to be a variant of the Redmi 7-series and could possibly be the Redmi 7 Pro.

The TENAA listing of the smartphone clearly says that the phone will come with a notched display, similar to Redmi 6 Pro. However, unlike the Redmi 6 Pro’s rectangular notch, the upcoming smartphone will sport a tiny water-drop notch, in line with the current trend.

Further, the listing reveals that it will come with a 5.84-inch display, which we expect to offer a Full HD+ screen resolution with 19:9 aspect ratio and some sort of screen protection on top such as Corning Gorilla Glass. The phone’s dimensions are also confirmed — 147.76×71.89×7.8mm.

Xiaomi M1901F9T

Under the hood, the phone will be powered by a 2,900mAh battery. The phone will be powered by an Android-based MIUI 10, however, the specific Android version has not been revealed. Also, the phone features a dual camera setup on the back, powered by artificial intelligence. It also packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added protection.

The phone is speculated to be the Redmi 7 or Redmi 7 Pro given that the Redmi 6 and 6 Pro both comes with a 5.45-inch display and dimension measurement is also similar. If the M1901F9T is indeed the Redmi 7 series phone, it will be a significant improvement in terms of the screen-to-body ratio.

The “M19” in the phone’s model number indicates that the phone will be launched next year. This is in line with previous reports suggesting new Redmi smartphones launch in January 2019. We expect to get more information about the phone’s specifications in the coming days.

Notably, other smartphone models from Xioami which have already passed the certification stage, including M1901F7C, M1901F7E, and M1901F7T, are also expected to be a part of the upcoming Redmi 7 series.

One of the recently certified phones from Xioami could be the one featuring 48-megapixel camera sensor. A recent report speculates that a Redmi series smartphone will pack a 48-megapixel camera sensor, which will be a part of a triple-camera setup. The phone could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 chipset.
