Samsung and SK Telecom are collaborating on 6G — and they’re letting AI run the show

Most of the world is still trying to get proper 5G coverage, but some companies Samsung and SK Telecom are already leaning hard into what comes next. The two Korean tech giants have reportedly signed a new agreement to co-develop 6G technologies, and the focus is clear: let AI manage the network.

The partnership is all about turning future radio access networks — the part that connects phones to cell towers — into intelligent systems that can adjust to whatever’s happening around them. Samsung Research and SKT’s Network Technology Office will handle the heavy lifting, with Samsung bringing hardware know-how and SKT supplying real-world network conditions to test against.

So what exactly will AI do in a 6G network? The companies highlighted three big pieces:

• AI-based channel estimation: software that predicts signal distortion and fixes it before users notice a thing — especially useful in dense cities where wireless signals bounce everywhere.
• Distributed MIMO: letting antennas from multiple sites work together instead of acting like isolated islands, giving stronger and wider coverage.
• AI-driven scheduling and routing: smarter decisions on where to push data when the network gets crowded, reducing bottlenecks.

Samsung has been laying the groundwork for 6G since 2019 and already has major network clients like Verizon, Airtel, and O2. SK Telecom, meanwhile, offers a huge live testing environment inside South Korea. That should help take ideas out of the lab and into the real world faster.

Both companies are part of the AI-RAN Alliance, a global group trying to standardize this new approach. One of their proposals — using AI for channel estimation — has already been accepted as an official work item, and early research results were shown off this month.

Commercial 6G isn’t expected until around 2028, but this collaboration is aimed at making sure that when the switch eventually flips, the networks are a lot smarter than anything running today. Instead of just chasing higher theoretical speeds, Samsung and SKT want 6G to feel better in everyday situations — crowded stadiums, tall office towers, or anywhere 5G struggles.

Japans unveils world’s first 6G device; it’s 20x faster than 5G

The prototype device was a result of collaboration among Japan’s leading telecom companies, including DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Fujitsu.

The consortium announced the successful test results on April 11th where the companies revealed that the prototype device can achieve speeds of 100 Gbps indoors using the 100 gigahertz (GHz) band and outdoors using the 300 GHz band.

These tests were conducted over a distance of 328 feet (100 meters), as stated by consortium representatives.

While the speeds achieved are quite impressive, don’t already make your expectations high. 6G was tested in a single device and is not a commercially viable network. Plus, the network technology has the downside of its own.

5G, the current gold standard in connectivity, has a theoretical maximum speed of 10 Gbps. However, real-world speeds are typically much lower, averaging around 200 megabits per second (Mbps) for T-Mobile users in the US.

One of the reasons for such low speeds is because of the higher frequency bands used by 5G. While higher frequencies can mean faster speeds, they also come with drawbacks. They limit the distance the signal can travel and reduce its penetration strength.

6G takes this a step further and uses even higher frequency bands than 5G. That means it would be difficult for 6G devices to receive the necessary frequencies for faster downloads.

For instance, even the tests were conducted at a distance of over 328 feet (100 meters). So factors like walls and even rain can significantly disrupt 6G signals.

While the transition from 4G to 5G focused on increasing data capacity for activities like video streaming and mobile browsing, 6G networks can unlock entirely new realms of possibility.

With the increased speed, 6G could enable things like real-time holographic communication and immersive virtual and mixed-reality experiences.

However, there’s still a lot that needs to be done for us to enjoy all that. Most importantly, the infrastructure. We’re looking at a complete overhaul of cell towers and a new generation of phones with built-in 6G antennas before this technology becomes mainstream.

Communication technologies continue to develop at full speed. The latest example of this is 5G technology, which is slowly becoming widespread. However, this progress is not at the expected pace when it comes to applicability. Fortunately, some steps are being taken to fix this issue. Lastly, 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) have signed a nduerstanding to boost cooperation on network studies.

The Europe-based 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) have signed a nduerstanding to boost cooperation on 5G and 6G. The 6G-IA is focused on “beyond 5G” (B5G) and 6G research. Like pre-standardization activities, policy and regulatory issues, 5G and 6G frequency concepts, international collaboration and verticals’ engagement to shape next-generation industrial use cases.

The main goal of the 6G-IA is to contribute to Europe’s leadership on 5G, 5G evolution and SNS/6G research. As part of the agreement, 6G-IA will be involved in ETSI’s Research, Innovation and Standards Ecosystem (RISE) group as well as the ETSI Technology Radar (ETR) activities mapping emerging technology areas.

6G-IA and ETSI are working together to make sure their research and standards for 5G and 6G are in line with each other. They will also launch projects to help define future networks. They will also share information with other groups that focus on 6G technology. The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), a partnership between the European Commission and 6G-IA, is expected to launch the first phase of 5G/6G research projects in early 2021. These projects will play a key role in the definition of next-generation networks.

The ETSI Research Conference in early February will provide a platform for these new projects to present their purpose and plans and exchange with standards experts on their standardization roadmaps.

China Maintains Leadership in 6G Race Against USA

Although the use of 5G technology is increasing rapidly, it is still not widespread in many countries. However, this is not an obstacle to the development of technology. Technologically developed countries such as China and ADB have already started working on 6G. So who will win this nascent rivalry between the two countries? According to the latest reports, China maintains its lead in 6G, but the US has two secret weapons.

China continues to lead in the 6G race

Chinese ZTE and the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) conducted a sample test of some technologies that will be important for the creation of 6G. ZTE provided some of the staff and equipment used in the tests. The five tests that ZTE took part in included:

6G distributed autonomous network and digital twin network concept sample
6G computing power network key tech concept sample
6G terahertz key tech concept sample
6G communication perception integration key tech concept sample
6G intelligent metasurface tech concept sample

All reports of ZTE’s tests with the government have been positive, but that doesn’t mean we will start using 6G technology soon. We are still years away from talking about this technology in a way that would allow us to compare its potential to 5G. However, As we said, China is not the only country investing in 6G, research is continuing in the U.S. and Europe.

Last year, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) claimed that out of approximately 38,000 patents related to 6G worldwide, 13,449, or 35% came from China. The U.S. was second with 18% of the 6G patents. The difference is quite large, but the USA intends to close it.

Huawei and ZTE are banned so the U.S. is turning to Ericsson and Nokia. Ericsson is reportedly following a ten-year plan that would lead to a commercial launch of 6G service sometime in 2030. The company will soon release a strategy on how it plans to develop 6G. CEO Katherine Ainley said, “We will establish a team of 20 high-level researchers in the U.K., and will also provide funding for students. The initial focus will be on 6G network and hardware security.”

ZTE has announced that it launched 6G key technology research in pursuit of monster network speeds of 1 million Gigabits. The astounding potential of such monster speeds is quite remarkable, but we could be several away from such technology. ZTE says that it is committed to technological innovation and R&D investment in order to maintain its market advantage in network improvement.

ZTE spent up to 16 billion yuan on research in 2022, which is about 17% of its operating income within the period. It says 6G is the next big thing in mobile communication but is in its early stage of development. ZTE will carry key defining research in 6G technologies that could set the template for future development in the area. The company will draw from its rich resource of R&D staff to deliver the innovation needed to drive 6G evolution. The 6G research has an extensive technical layout and will be in-depth. ZTE says it will actively explore industry alliances, open-source communities, and other creative engagements to drive the research.

ZTE sees an active R&D strategy as an important fulcrum in enterprise development. It has active R&D units at different places around the world with some core competencies. Its core areas include 5G wireless network, bearer, access, chips, and more. It has consistently devoted up to 10% of its operating income annually to this cause. It says it will continue to put in the needed effort to fast-track key developments in 6G technology. It is noted that the 6G network is projected to come on stream by 2030.

Just recently, Samsung Electronics released a new white paper that showcases its plans for the next generation standard of networking, which is 6G. It shared a paper titled “6G Spectrum: Expanding the Frontier,” so let’s have a look.

According to Sunghyun Choi, Samsung’s Executive VP and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center, “We have started on our journey long ago to understand, develop and standardize the 6G communications technology. We are committed to taking the lead and sharing our findings to spread our vision to bring the next hyper connected experience to every corner of life.” In other words, the South Korean tech giant has begun work into bringing the next gen standard into the market.

Furthermore, 6G would require a spectrum with ultra wideband bandwidth that ranges from “hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz.” In simpler terms, this will allow for high fidelity mobile holograms and truly immersive extended reality (XR) as well. The company is also focusing on improving the coverage of the next gen communications standard. For this, it is considering all available bands for 6G, from low band under 1GHz to mid band in the 1 to 24Ghz range and even high bands that range in 24 to 300GHz range.

Arriving at the possible improvements 6G is offering, Samsung claims that the speeds from 6G might hit up to 1 Terabits per second (Tbps), which is the 50 times faster than the 20Gbps on 5G networks. During its tests back in June 2021, the company managed to demonstrate a 6Gbps data rate at a 15 meters distance indoors. At 30 meters distance indoors, the network managed to have a data rate of 12Gbps. Even at 120 meters distance, the data rate was still reaching 2.3Gbps. Samsung plans to share more details and the findings of its 6G research in the future as well, so stay tuned for more updates.

Researchers in China reportedly achieve data streaming using 6G technology

There seems to be only a minimal slowdown in the deployment of super-fast 6G technology in China even with the setbacks occasioned by the clampdown on Huawei and other Chinese firms who were on the cusp of 6G breakthrough in some form. There are clear indications that China has made progress on the next generation connectivity architecture for wireless communications according to reports from the South China Morning Post.

The report indicates that the Chinese research team led by Professor Zhang Chao was able to stream 1 terabyte of data over 1km in one second. Professor Zhang Chao is from the School of Aerospace Engineering of Tsinghua University and his research team achieved the feat using very high-frequency radio waves, called vortex millimeter waves. The implications for these outstanding streaming speeds are indeed far-reaching, as there are loads of applications that are waiting for the 6G technology to change the face of the world. They could be deployed to weapons and defense systems, with the possibility of deploying hypersonic weapons. The communications component and applications in the entire IoT ecosystem are also exciting.

China says it is at the head of research on 6G research with massive investments in support of the new technology and some great results to show for the efforts. An experimental wireless system was deployed in the Beijing Winter Olympics to simultaneously stream more than 10,000 hi-def live feeds seamlessly. Team leader, Professor Zhang insists that the vortex millimeter waves are unlike any of the radio waves deployed since radio waves were introduced over 100 years ago.

The new technology has added a new dimension to current wireless transmission, which means that the vortex millimeter waves have three dimensions similar to the motion of a whirling tornado. The researcher has also developed an innovative transmitter that allows the waves to spin in three different modes for efficient data transmission. The architecture also includes a special receiver to decode a large amount of data at super-fast sub-second speeds. Even with the decline of Huawei was massively pioneering research and development of the 6G technology, China still holds some stake in 6G patents up to 40% of the global overall. The 6G technology could deliver speeds more than 100 times faster than current 5G speeds and several countries are pursuing research in that direction.

The ultimate deployment of the 6G technology is still however years away, with some projections putting this at 2030. The global focus now is for much of the world to have the needed deployment of 5G connectivity, with its accompanying concerns for health and airline safety being pointed out. China accounts for 40% of 6G patent applications with most of them being filed by Huawei, survey reveals

China is already working on the next generation of communication networks known as 6G that is expected to roll out commercially by the end of this decade.

Research conducted by Nikkei Asia and Tokyo-based research company Cyber Creative Institute shows that China topped the list with 40.3% of 6G patent filings, closely followed by the U.S. with 35.2%. Japan ranked third with 9.9%, followed by Europe with 8.9% and South Korea with 4.2%.

Around 20,000 patent applications for nine core 6G technologies were surveyed for this. This includes communications, quantum technology, base stations, and artificial intelligence. Countries with a greater number of patent filings are more likely to be ahead of the curve in terms of advanced technology and tend to have a greater influence over industry standards.

China’s 6G development had been expected to be slow due to sanctions imposed by the US government in 2019 on Huawei Technologies but, the Asian country has maintained its competitiveness by mobilizing state-run companies and universities.

6G patent applications by China are mostly related to mobile infrastructure technology. This makes sense considering aerial coverage such as satellites, combined with ground base stations for broader radio bands, will be needed in the 6G era.

A considerable amount of the patents (12%) have been filed by none other than Huawei which controlled 30% of the world’s base stations in 2020. Other prominent patent holders include state-run companies such as State Grid Corporation of China and China Aerospace Science and Technology.

6G is expected to be over 10 times faster than 5G and will be enabling fully autonomous driving, HD virtual reality, and worldwide internet, even in the most remote regions.

On the other end, the US has high technical prowess in software and terminals, thanks to it possessing many smartphone and internet companies. Qualcomm and Intel have acquired many patents for chips used in smartphones and other IT equipment.

Finally, Japan that ranks third in the number of patents, has Nippon Telegraph & Telephone. Nippon has filed many patents involving optical communications and mobile infrastructure networks in urban areas. This includes technologies for mitigating data congestion and delays.

The International Telecommunication Union and industry groups will likely begin discussing 6G standardization around 2024. China is expected to have a strong voice in the policy-making process thanks to the large number of patents owned by it.

Huawei Technologies is apparently seeking to lead the next generation of telecommunications technology. The company aims on becoming a pioneer in 6G networking as the US and Japan also invest heavily towards the next networking standards.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the Chinese tech giant’s plans to develop 6G also arrives as US and Japan also push ahead with the next gen telecom tech. Furthermore, the company’s CEO and Founder, Ren Zhengfei has asked his employees to “break limits in the sky” and set global standards in the industry. The statement was made when he was speaking to a gathering of the company’s scientists, researchers, and interns last month. As per an internal company document, the senior official said that the brand will continue to develop 5G and AI (Artificial Intelligence) businesses while also moving forward in next generation technology.

Although, the biggest hurdle to its plans is likely the US, which has imposed various sanctions in the past that had essentially crippled its once notable smartphone business. The founder acknowledged the effects of these US trade restrictions but added that “Our research into 6G is preparation against a rainy day, and we aim to seize the ground of 6G patents. We must not wait until 6G becomes viable, as waiting would impose constraints on us due to a lack of patents.”

LG reports successful demonstration of 6G data transmission using Terahertz spectrum

Korean tech powerhouse LG has announced a breakthrough in its research on 6G technology. It says it has successfully demonstrated the 6G data transmission technology using the Terahertz spectrum. The 6G milestone is the culmination of work between LG and one of Europe’s leading research firms, Berlin-based Fraunhoffer-Gesellschaft.

LG says the milestone was achieved last week in Berlin, Germany when it successfully transmitted data outdoors for a range of 100 meters. The company has also developed a new power amplifier with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft which will help to deliver stable 6G signals on the Terahertz spectrum. The power amp, according to LG, can deliver a maximum output signal of 15-decibel milliwatts to achieve stable communication in the 155-175GHz band.

In addition, LG has also developed adaptive beamforming and high-gain antenna switching technologies for 6G communications. The innovations and new products will boost research on 6G network technology, as LG seeks to put some distance between it and its competitors.

Indeed, the pursuit of research on next-generation wireless communication technology has been intense. Huawei has also indicated progress in research on the 6G technology. It is projected that the commercial deployment of the 6G technology will be in 2029, while standardization talks commence by 2025.

South Korea unveils $193 million five year project for 6G development

South Korean has just unveiled its five year project for the development of core technologies for 6G telecommunications technology. This plan will have the government invest 220 billion won (roughly 193 million US Dollars).

According to an AjuDaily report, South Korea is stepping up its efforts for the joint research and cooperation with the United States of America. The nation is aiming on achieving the world’s first commercialization of 6G mobile telecommunications by the year 2028. This investment was announced earlier today (23rd June 2021) at a 6G strategy meeting that was attended by experts, company officials, and government officials as well.

Science and ICT Minister Lim Hye-sook stated in the conference that “As the next-generation mobile network is the foundation of digital innovation, we should play a bold and challenging role together to lead the international market in the 6th generation era based on our experience and know-how in the network field.” The report also added that a 6G network can only be commercialized when a high performance network on the ground and satellite communication are combined.

Japan and Finland to join hands for the development of 6G network

Known telecom groups from Japan and Finland are teaming up for the development of 6G networking. This would have the joint effort focus on research and development of the sixth generation of telecommunications technology to help in setting up standards in a race with China.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, Finland’s telecom equipment maker Nokia, a major player in the industry, will join this effort. Furthermore, Japan’s Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium will also be signing the agreement soon with Finnish group 6G Flagship. Notably, this cooperation was set to be announced earlier today (15th June 2021) at the Global Digital Summit 2021, which is an event organized by Nikkei and Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The joint effort arrives after the 4.5 billion US Dollars commitment from Japan and the US for the development of the next generation communication technology. This partnership was announced back in April 2021. The combined effort, which is also set to include “third countries” to promote secure connectivity, will help in the competition against China to set global standards.

The beyond 5G Promotion Consortium aims to commercialize 6G technology within the 2030s and will include notable Japanese telecom players like Nippon Telegraph & Telephone, NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank Corp, and Rakuten Mobile. Additionally, the members of the Japanese consortium will engage in joint research projects and personnel exchange as well. An industry body backed by the Chinese government has just issued a white paper on 6G. In this, the applications of the next generation of mobile networking and its potential key technologies were highlighted.

The white paper also added that 6G networking could even offer speeds up to 10 times faster than the peak speeds of 5G mobile networks. As per a GlobalTimes report, the paper mapped out a clear guide for the entire industry and even offered a head start on the research and development plan for 6G. One of the most notable aspects highlighted by the white paper was China’s goals to commercially launch the technology by the year 2030.

In other words, this would also mark another tech race between China and the US. China reveals it has way more 6G patents than the U.S, laying claim to early 6G lead

While the transition from 4G to 5G is still in an early stage of development in some parts of the world, the race has begun for more robust connectivity with 6G. The sixth-generation wireless technology, when operational, will dwarf the speed of its predecessor 5G. It is predicted that 6G will be up to 100 times faster than 5G and would offer several new applications and enhance the speed of communications on the whole. It will revolutionize the wireless communications spectrum and open a world of new opportunities.

China’s patent office, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), has announced that the country is leading in the race for 6G technology. Several Chinese companies account for about 35% of the global 6G-related patents. The CNIPA says that with 13,449 patents already out of the estimated 38,000 patents for 6G, the Chinese are the global leaders in the research and development of 6G technology. The United States comes a distant second with about 18% of the patents.

Last month, the global leader in 5G technology, Huawei, hinted that the 6G technology could be birthed by the turn of the century. The company continues to pursue research along this line despite its numerous travails. Several companies, including Apple and Samsung, are also known to be scaling up their research along 6G development as the race heats up.

The US and its allies in Europe have already begun research projects on the 6G technology and could be working together to have a common front. China will continue to explore partnerships between Chinese companies and those from Japan and South Korea to pursue 6G capabilities. Chinese companies will therefore continue to reduce their reliance on US suppliers in the face of the hostile situations between Washington and Beijing.

According to their segments, a breakdown of the patents shows that China holds the aces in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and terahertz technology, with some Chinese universities driving research within these segments. We’ll continue to keep a close tab on the development, although we are still years away from an actual 6G deployment.

Apple is currently recruiting engineers to develop 6G wireless technology

Apple, alongside Google, was reported to have joined the Next G Alliance in November last year, a group that looks to advance the next generation of wireless technology (6G). Apparently, Apple is also planning to start working on 6G on its own. A new job posting spotted by Bloomberg shows that the Cupertino-based company is sourcing for engineers and talent that will help in the development of next-generation 6G cellular technologies.6G technology is stilll several years away from realization, considering that 5G has not even been fully deployed globally. But then, US companies seem to have been caught off guard by their Chinese counterparts who led the way in 5G deployment and so, are trying to avoid a repeat.

The job posting explains that Apple is looking for people who will “research and design next-generation (6G) wireless communication systems for radio access networks” and “participate in industry/academic forums passionate about 6G technology.” It states further that the candidate will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to craft next generation wireless technology that will have a deep impact on future Apple products. “In this role, you will be at the center of a cutting-edge research group responsible for creating next-generation disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade,” it states.

Experts are of the opinion that 6G cellular technology standards won’t be deployed until around 2030 but this is the right time to begin research and development. Apple is apparently looking to move ahead of the pack and perhaps develop the 6G modem and other products that would be used on its smartphones and other gadgets.

Apart from Apple, other notable companies already on the forefront of 6G R&D efforts include Huawei, LG, Nokia and others.

5G is just getting fired up in many countries but a report already talks about a big change that 6G will bring to the table. Countries like China have already started pushing for it ahead of others. Huawei seeks to help Australia in rolling out 6G network

Huawei is apparently calling on the Australian government to begin the initiative of rolling out the next generation of telecommunications. The company seeks to cooperate with the government for 6G networking.

According to an SMH report, the Chinese telecom equipment maker wants the government to talk to the company on how to roll out the next generation of mobile networking technology, or 6G. This time it aims at working closely with the government to avoid a ban, which it faced for the nation’s 5G network. In other words, it is also another attempt to reverse its original ban from working on Australia’s 5G roll out and aims at working with the government for research and development of 6G networking.

As per Huawei Australia’s director of corporate affairs Jeremy Mitchell, it is still “not too late” for the company to supply the country with telecommunications equipment for its 5G infrastructure, but he also believes that “it is very unlikely.” The official added that “The conversation we now want to have with the Australian government is what do we do when 6G or 7G comes, because like it or not Huawei or another Chinese company will be the leader in this area,” and that “We would like to work with the government to ensure Australia has access to the best technology but do so in a way which gives security agencies confidence in terms of risk mitigation.”

Mitchel believes that “6G is just at the very beginning of research development but it’s important to get in now to understand where this technology is going.” For those unaware, Huawei faced a ban by the Australian government over its participation in the 5G roll out as it was a “high risk vendor,” which might be under the influence of a foreign government and its interest that might conflict with Australian law. Thus, the move from the Chinese company might be seen as an attempt to scrap the ban, with Mitchell even bringing the example of Ericsson lobbying against the Swedish government over a similar Huawei 5G ban as an example.

Nokia appointed to lead European Union’s Hexa-X 6G research project

The European Union has funded a wireless project called Hexa-X which is focusing on the next generation of mobile technology — 6G. Now, the Finnish company Nokia has been appointed to lead a group of companies and universities working on the project.

The project aims to create unique 6G use-cases and scenarios as well as develop fundamental 6G technologies. It will also define a new architecture for the integration of the key 6G enablers.

Apart from Nokia, the project also includes Ericsson, Atos, Intel, Orange, Siemens, TIM, and Telefonica. Ericsson is also acting as the technical manager for the project. The University of Oulu and the University of Pisa are also a part of this initiative.

It’s interesting to see countries kickstarting preparations for the 6G technology at a time when 5G is still in the early stages of going mainstream and is available in select regions only. As per the report, there are about 100 wireless carriers globally that offer 5G connectivity, that too in limited regions.

China pushes for 6G as the US still struggles with 5G networking

China has been at the forefront of 5G networking, with the country already adopting the newer and faster bandwidth into its infrastructure. Now, the Asian nation is moving forward with 6G networking, while other developed nations like the US are still struggling to roll out 5G networking.

According to a NYPost report, the satellite Star Era-12 has a frequency band so high that it had to be tested in space to avoid signal disruption due to the atmosphere, as explained by the National Science Foundation’s Thyagarajan Nandagopal. At the moment, it is unknown just how fast the bands actually are, but it is estimated to be within the range of 100 to 500Ghz, which is about 100 times faster than 5G. This scale is similar to the 100 times faster jump moving from 4G to 5G, which is in line with with another report we had covered earlier this week.

The implications of 6G are also greatly varied, with its benefits being useful to a number of fields from telemedicine to national security. Furthermore, the new network would also give rise to newer technology and services that utilize the faster speeds, which can potentially bring in billions for the global economy. To put the high speeds into perspective, 6G is capable of downloading a high definition movie in just 8 seconds and 1,500 high resolution images in under a minute. A surgeon from New York can use robotics to operate on a patient in California or even be used to save a life in the battlefield through another robot.

Unfortunately, China’s lead in 6G networking might also end up dividing the global standards again. Back when 3G was still new, the US had adopted a different standard causing devices from the US to not function in abroad. Meaning, the US and Europe might just be holding the world back through their own standards, if China retains the 6G lead. in other words, “It would be like taking your laptop to Europe and having to buy an adapter.”

Apple and Google join 6G industry group despite both only recently launching 5G phones

5G networking is increasingly becoming the new standard in the smartphone industry and Google and Apple only recently launched their latest iPhone and Pixel smartphone with thew newer and faster bandwidth. But despite just joined the 5G club, both tech giants have joined “the Next G Alliance.”

The next generation of networking is already being worked on at different parts of the world. 6G is said to be 100 to 500 times faster than even 5G. With Google and Apple both joining the new 6G industry group, we can likely expect 6G iPhones and Pixels to also be a thing sometime in the next couple of years. As per a PhoneArena report, the Next G Alliance is set to hold its first meeting next week and will be led by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS).

ATIS is a North America trade associatiopn that previously worked with secure supply chains, hearing aids, robocalls, and more. The primary goal of the group is to “advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and beyond over the next decade, while building on the long-term evolution of 5G.” Both Apple and Google join the likes of Charter Communications, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Intel, Keysight Technologies, LG Electronics, Mavenir, MITRE and VMware.

As per official notes from the Next G Alliance, “While the world is exploring opportunities that will light the path to 6G, the US must take timely and critical action to ensure unquestioned leadership in 6G innovation and development.” Susan Miller ATIS CEO also added that “Old models of leadership are not going to play in this new future in light of the geopolitical landscape. If the US is really going to assert its leadership, it’s going to have to act in a new way.”

China has just launched the world’s first 6G experimental satellite

At 11:09 am on November 6, a Long March 6 carrier rocket slowly lifted off from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi province. Later on, it was announced on the official WeChat platform of China’s University of Electronic Science and Technology that the world’s first 6G experimental satellite named after the university, was successfully lifted off the Long March 6 and entered the scheduled orbit that same day.

The report (via) states that the satellite is equipped with a terahertz satellite communication payload jointly developed by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and a number of top domestic laboratories. It will establish a transceiver link on the satellite platform and carry out the “world’s first experiment of terahertz communication technology in space”, according to the university’s announcement on its WeChat channel.

“This marks China’s breakthrough in exploring terahertz communication technology in the aerospace,” Professor Xu Yangsheng, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and academic director of the university’s Satellite Technology Research Institute, said in a statement.

The official also disclosed in the statement that the satellite will also be used for intelligent city applications, disaster prevention, land planning, environment protection, and the monitoring of major infrastructure construction in addition to 6G experiments.

This project is yet another monumental effort by China to stay ahead of the pack in the race to 6G connectivity even when 5G is yet to be rolled out on a wider scale. China is a leader in 5G technology and the race for 5G is largely responsible for the heightened US/China trade dispute, including sanctions imposed on Huawei, the leading 5G gear manufacturer. If the US had aimed to slow down the pace of China’s technological advancement, it failed to achieve that aim. China, just like Japan and a few other countries is already working on 6G.

While countries like the USA vouched for 6G long back, it looks like Chinese companies are now hopping on the train slowly. Qin Fei, who is a Dean of Vivo Communications Research Institute, says 6G requires smartphones, AR, VR, and Robotics to build a better wireless network.

At a 6G series meeting held by Vivo, he says(via ITHome) Vivo has begun the 6G research and subsequent scenarios. He feels 6G will emphasize more on AR(Augmented Reality), VR(Virtual Reality), and other adjacent technologies. According to him, future AR/VR glasses will be much thinner, comfortable. And will be in sync with a brain-computer to read people’s minds.

After 2030, multi-function robots will replace the current primary ones with updated AI-intelligence. And advancement in other technologies, predicts Fei. However, he says Smartphones are less likely to get replaced in 6G era. Complexity of touch screen, custom communication modules, computing unit, ARM cores, etc., are reportedly the reasons for that.

Furthermore, he says Vivo prefers to develop more 2C(To C) terminals in the future. When asked about the differences between 5G and 6G, he says, 6G will focus on strengthening to predecessors like 5G, 4G. Also, 6G will combine AI to become a complete service by integrating communication, computation, and storage. However, he says 6G≠5G+AI.

That said, Vivo is not the only company to embrace the next generation of wireless communication technology. South Korean giant LG, and Samsung have already begun its R&D. And Samsung is expecting that 6G will launch commercially by 2028. Nevertheless, 6G will probably have improvements like 1 terabyte per second(1 Tbps) speed, MEC(multi-access edge computing), faster sampling rates, combination of sub-mmWave, and Frequency Selectivity for better EM absorption rates, etc.

South Korea to launch Pilot 6G Project in 2026

The South Korean government is planning on launching the pilot project for 6G networking in 2026. The upcoming mobile networking generation is touted to be 50 times faster than 5G and the nation plans on commercializing the service between 2028 to 2030, according to a report from Business Korea.

Earlier this week, Chung Se-kyun, Prime Minister of South Korea, finalized the government’s strategy to promote research and development for the next generation of telecommunications at a science and technology meet. The strategy involves preemptive development of future technology alongside securing standard and high value patents and laying R&D and industry foundations.

The South Korean government is planning on investing 200 billion won (roughly 169 million US Dollars) over five years for this project, starting from 2021, to secure high risk basic 6G technology. It will start by pushing 10 strategic tasks in 6 key areas which include hyper-performance, hyper-bandwidth, hyper-precision, hyper-space, hyper-intelligence, and hyper-trust.

This project aims to reach one-terabyte-per-second data transmission speed, which is five times faster than 5G, and reduce latency to a tenth of 5G services, down to 0.1ms for its wireless services. Notably, the government is also planning on making6G networking available up to 10 km above the ground. After securing the supporting infrastructure and technology, the government will begin the 6G pilot project by 2026 which will also have far reaching applications in various industries like healthcare, self driving cars, and construction of smart cities.

MediaTek is developing 6G through R&D center in Nokia’s home country in Finland

MediaTek recently revealed its reports for the second quarter and the first half of 2020. The company has been witnessing increasing shipments of its Dimensity 5G chips but has apparently also been quietly working on 6G networking as well.

According to a new report, the known chipmaker has begun work through a 6G research and development center in Nokia‘s home country Finland. For those unaware, Nokia is a Finnish company that is a known figure in the global communications and networking fields and 6G networking is the next generation of telecommunications, which is being researched by MediaTek through academic sites in Finland.

The Finnish government and local universities have already begun research and plan to commercialize the networking by 2030. Although, it is to be noted that the development for 6G is still very much in its nascent stages and at the moment, there are no defined technical indicators. Hence, the next few years should bring some interesting new developments in the field and possibly reveal some technical capabilities as well.

Previously, Samsung had released a White Paper for 6G networking, where it detailed all the parameters that the newer generation would meet, including speeds up to 1000Gbps, latency less than 0.1ms and overall speed being 50 percent faster than the current 5G technology. However, it is still too early to have an exact idea of what 6G would be capable of, so stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung is expecting 6G to launch commercially by 2028

Samsung Electronics is expecting that the next generation of networking will arrive as early as 2028. The South Korean tech giant says that 6G would be commercialized by 2028 and will go mainstream by 2030.

Earlier today (14th July 2020), Samsung released a white paper titled “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All.” This outlined the company’s vision for 6G networking. It mentioned all the “technical and societal megatrends, new services, requirements, candidate technologies, and an expected timeline of standardization.” In other words, an early roadmap of the next generation of communications made through experiences with 5G.

According to Samsung, ” While 5G commercialization is still in its initial stage, it’s never too early to start preparing for 6G because it typically takes around 10 years from the start of research to commercialization of a new generation of communications technology.” Sunghyun Choi, Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center said that the company has already launched the research and development of 6G technologies.

It had taken the world 15 years to reach 3G from 2G networking, and since then, 5G is available just 8 years after. The company expects this trend to accelerate further in the future. Samsung is expecting a peak data rate of 1,000 gigabits per second with air latency lower than 100 microseconds and 50 times the peak data rate of 5G. The performance and the architectural requirement for 6G will include various optimizations to improve network design and overcome limitations of mobile devices.

Interestingly, the flexibility of the next generation will bring newer network integration and even AI (artificial intelligence) applications. Although, the use of AI would also need to arrive with certain trustworthiness regarding security and privacy, both of which are major concerns that are likely to arise.

Xiaomi will stop making 4G phones by the end of 2020, Working on 6G, satellite internet & more

Xiaomi and Redmi have been launching new smartphones every month in different markets since the beginning of 2020. Most of their new handsets in China are 5G capable. According to the company’s CEO, it will stop making 4G smartphones for its home country by the end of this year. The Chinese tech company has also started pre-research on 6G along with the development of satellite internet.

Lei Jun, the co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi was recently interviewed by Xinhua, in which he revealed some of his company’s future plans. He also mentioned the difficulties faced by them due to COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, 5G will revolutionize the industry with applications like 4K / 8K video conferencing, cloud gaming (game streaming), and auto-pilot. Thus, Xiaomi / Redmi has been launching 5G handsets to ramp up the adaptation.

Unfortunately, the coronavirus outbreak in China affected the company’s supply chain severely. Due to which, it was out of 5G handsets in warehouses. This made Xiaomi subsidize factories for 250 million Yuan to increase the production of 5G smartphones. Also, it is planning to halt manufacturing of 4G handsets in China by the end of 2020 to spend more resources on 5G devices.

Xiaomi will be focussing more on mobile and AIoT, which it revealed last year. Also, it will work with the Chinese government to build disaster warning systems and other public service systems relying on 5G technology.

Last but not least, Xiaomi has also begun pre-research on 6G as well as satellite internet technology.

Vivo has announced its 6G R&D Team in China

Vivo, the known smartphone manufacturer, has announced that the company has launched its 6G research and development to better prepare for the obstacles caused by data explosion in the near future.

The announcement arrived from the Chinese company’s headquarters in South China with its head of Communications Research Institue, Qin Fei, stating that “Although the commercial use of 5G has just started, Vivo has already rolled out layouts for 6G, exploring the next-generation technology ahead of time.” In other words, Vivo is already working on future proofing and laying the foundation for the next generation in telecommunication.

According to the senior executive, the company has set up a dedicated and specialized team in the early stages of 6G networking to demonstrate the wide applications of the new technology. The team will even provide different scenarios of its capabilities and Vivo is already participating in several discussions within the networking industry. Qin also mentioned that its 6G team will cooperate with both domestic and foreign universities to yield better results for its research on the technology.

Japan’s NTT Docomo targets 6G launch by 2030

A recent report by Nikkei indicated that Japan has begun planning a comprehensive strategy for “post-5G” (6G) technology that achieves communication speeds 10 times faster than 5G by 2030. Japan’s largest carrier NTT Docomo has now begun drawing up a strategy to be a leader in 6G technology towards achieving the 2030 commercial launch plan.

The mobile operator Friday released a white paper outlining its views on 5G evolution and 6G communications technology, noting mobile communication systems typically evolve into the next generation over a period of about ten years.

The report touches on related technical concepts and the expected diverse use cases of evolving 5G and new 6G communication technologies, along with the components of the technology and performance targets.

Docomo, which started its 5G research in 2010, said in a statement it will promote cooperation among government, industry and academia, along with diverse stakeholders. It said it would continue to research and develop its technology to enable the further evolution of mobile communications. Areas of focus include pioneering new frequency bands including terahertz frequencies and developing ultra-low energy and ultra-low-cost communications.

Japan’s earlier statement also detailed that the country will invest $2.03 billion in the research and development of 6G. It’s expected to provide a speed 10 times faster than what the world will witness in terms of 5G technology, which sounds freaking ridiculous.

According to a recent report by Nikkei, Japan has begun planning a comprehensive strategy for “post-5G” (6G) technology that achieves communication speeds that are 10 times faster than 5G by 2030. The report claims that China, South Korea, and Finland have also started research and development and investment this segment, but Japan have been surprisingly slow with the adoption of 5G technology, and are hoping to make up with an early push toward 6G.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan will set up a government-civilian research society in January, under the chairmanship of the University of Tokyo Goshinjin, and under the direct supervision of the general affairs minister Takao Sanae. Relevant people from NTT and Toshiba will also be invited to discuss 6G performance goals and policy support by June.

Japan claims that through using “post-5G” (6G) high-speed communication technology, it is possible to depict a future society in which individual stereoscopic images emerge from conference rooms or classrooms far away, and robots take care of people.

The country will invest $2.03 billion in the research and development of 6G. It’s expected to provide a speed 10 times faster than what the world will witness in terms of 5G technology, which sounds frankly ridiculous. Unused high-frequency waves will be used in the 6G network.

Other countries have begun to take action as well. The Chinese government announced in November 2019 that it will establish two 6G R & D institutions. Finnish universities and government-affiliated institutions have also launched 6G R & D projects. In South Korea, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics each set up research centers in 2019.

Vivo files its first 6G patent but it’s just a logo design

5G technology is still at its infancy as the service just started rolling out in some countries like China and the US. The next-gen technology is expected to blossom next year. Notwithstanding, we have seen a couple of discussions centred on 6G technology. Vivo has just ignited yet another discussion with its latest patent application.

The Chinese smartphone maker recently applied to have a design for its 6G logo registered by the EU Intellectual Property Office. The application was filed on October 22 and it is basically a customization of the characters – 6G. The design saw the 6G characters decorated with four diagonal stripes designed in such a way to depict the supersonic speed of 6G.

6G standard isn’t expected to be completed before 2030 and will bring even faster network speed. The read speed is said to reach 1TB per second with zero latency. At present, Vivo is one of the leading firms in 6G technology research and development, participating in the industry’s B5G / 6G seminar. The company has established many partnerships on cutting-edge 6G technology research with many universities. Apart from Vivo, Chinese tech giant Huawei has also commenced work on 6G, according to a statement by its found Ren Zhengfei.
