About 3 million of these everyday bathroom gadgets have been hijacked and used to flood online services with traffic, rendering them inaccessible. An unexpected twist in the sector of Internet of Things (IoT) security was highlighted by a recent report, which pointed out the vulnerabilities in seemingly harmless devices.

This unusual attack targeted a Swiss Company’s website

The incident involved smart toothbrushes being manipulated to target a Swiss company’s website, causing it to crash for several hours and resulting in significant financial damage. This scenario underscores a critical message: any device that connects to the internet can potentially be exploited for malicious purposes, from baby monitors to electric toothbrushes.

The Swiss branch of cybersecurity firm Fortinet has been at the forefront of sounding the alarm on this issue. Stefan Züger, from Fortinet, emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks associated with internet-connected devices. His team’s experiment, which involved exposing an unprotected computer to the internet, saw it compromised in just 20 minutes, illustrating the speed at which cyber threats can materialize.

The proliferation of IoT devices in homes and businesses increases the avenues through which attackers can execute distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Devices ranging from routers and surveillance cameras to, now, toothbrushes, can be commandeered to disrupt online services.

To combat this threat, experts recommend keeping the software of all networked devices up to date with automatic security patches. Additionally, the use of antivirus software and monitoring for unusual spikes in energy and data usage can help detect and prevent malware infections.

MediaTek, one of the leading smartphone chips manufacturer, has announced its new MediaTek Genio 700 IoT chip at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023.

The MediaTek Genio 700 is an octa-core processor which the company says is designed for smart home, smart retail, and industrial IoT products and is focused on power efficiency.

It is manufactured using the N6 (6nm) process and has two ARM Cortex-A78 cores running at 2.2GHz, along with six ARM Cortex A-55 cores running at 2.0GHz while providing 4.0 TOPs AI accelerator.

The chips also come with support for dual displays, as well as an ISP for better images. The company says that it allows makers to customize products using Yocto Linux, Ubuntu, and Android, allowing customers to easily develop their own products with a minimal amount of effort, regardless of application type.

It supports high-speed interfaces, including PCIe 2.0, USB 3.2 Gen1, and MIPI-CSI interface for the camera. Along with dual display support (Full HD at 60Hz and 4K at 60Hz), it also comes with AV1, VP9, H.265, and H.264 (video decode) support. It has ARM SystemReady certification for providing a standard and easy way to integrate the platform and ARM PSA certification for increased security.

Despite Wi-Fi 6 and 6E adoption rates still being relatively low in 2022, it seems that Intel, the leading semiconductor tech giant is already wanting to move on to the next generation of broadband internet – WiFi 7.

In their latest YouTube video uploaded on Intel’s Newsroom channel, Intel, in collaboration with Broadcom, is shown to demonstrate that Wi-Fi 7 can achieve speeds of up to over 5 Gbps, at least 5 times faster than the 1 Gbps that Wi-Fi 6 maxes out at, and 25 times faster than the average speed of Wi-Fi 5 which is only 200 Mbps.

The demonstration was done using an Intel-powered laptop that has support for Wi-Fi 7 and using a Broadcom access point router, the 5 Gbps speed achieved was stable and steady throughout the test. Broadcom adds that the value of Wi-Fi 7 goes beyond simple speed increases to deliver greater network capacity, Wi-Fi 7 will also bring along the benefits of much lower latencies. 

“The reduced latencies will be invaluable for immersive experiences over Wi-Fi, with the most obvious applications being online gaming and reduced latency for wireless VR headsets. For media streamers, it also opens up the eye-popping possibility of UHD 16K resolution high fps streaming (or more people on the network streaming 4K or 8K videos),” Broadcom explains.

In their press document for Wi-Fi 7, Intel mentions that the company hopes to deploy and supply Wi-Fi 7 modems in Intel-powered laptops starting in 2024, and the documents also reiterate the 4 main pillars of improvement for the next generation of Wi-Fi.

The 4 key advancements are respectively accelerated connectivity, rock-solid reliability, wired-like responsiveness, and enhanced privacy and security. In detail, Intel promises that Wi-Fi 7 will deliver

1. Greater than 5 Gbps PC Wi-Fi speeds with consistent ultra-low latency – share files in seconds vs minutes.
2. Peace of mind your PC will make and maintain the best Wi-Fi connections simultaneously.
3. No-compromise gaming throughout the home.
4. Trust in your connectivity.

As shown in the comparison table provided by Intel above, Wi-Fi 7 has new specifications standards when compared to previous generations. The new Wi-Fi 7 will feature tri-band operations, under 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz frequencies. The tri-band operations allow for more multi-device connections across Wi-Fi 7 without much interference as compared to single-band operation and dual-band operation. 

The underlying technologies behind Wi-Fi 7 also include wider 320 MHz channels in the unlicensed 6GHz spectrum, higher order 4K QAM data modulation, and the upcoming WPA4 network security encryption standard. Leica, the globally renowned photography brand, recently announced the Leica Cine 1 – an ultra-short throw (UST) laser projector, which the brand calls a laser TV, and the brand claims to have revolutionized the future of television. 

In collaboration with Hisense, Leica launched the Leica Cine 1 at the annual 2022 IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin. And before we get into the specifics of the Leica Cine 1, here’s the pricing of the Leica Cine 1.

The Leica Cine 1 will be available in 80-inch and 100-inch setups. The Leica Cine 1 projector will set you back around 6900 USD for the 80-inch projector unit, and 7900 USD for the 100-inch projector unit. As for the screen, Leica is selling its exclusive ambient light rejection (ALR) screens that are compatible with the Leica Cine 1 at 1600 USD and 1800 USD for the 80-inch and 100-inch screens respectively.

However, users can still opt for third-party projector screens as well, but Leica recommends users that its Leica Cine 1 UST laser projector be paired with its ambient light rejection (ALR) screens for the best viewing experience. So if you were to have the full 100-inch Leica Cine 1 setup, it will cost you a total of 9700 USD to own this “laser TV”. 

So what makes the Leica Cine 1 cost almost 10 thousand dollars? And should you get one yourself?

The Leica Cine 1 is a UST projector with a triple RGB laser as a light source and an integrated TV tuner. The technology which Leica calls Laser TV, will fundamentally change the television display market according to the brand. Leica claims that according to market experts, the new technology will quickly establish itself in the range of display sizes from 80 inches.

The Leica Cine 1 enters the market as a large-scale TV and home cinema alternative. With brilliant picture quality in 4K resolution, but significantly lower consumption values at the same time compared to traditional LED televisions, consumers will be able to have a real home cinema experience in the comfort of their own living room in the future with display sizes up to 140 inches.

At its core is the projection system with triple RGB laser technology has a sophisticated optical system manufactured in accordance with Leica’s optics expertise and high standards. The system will be available in 2100 to 2500 ANSI lumens of brightness and can refresh up to 60Hz.

Leica claims that the Leica Cine 1 laser TV can last more than 25,000 hours in a single continuous session. In terms of the sound system, this laser TV has 2 built-in 20W speakers and supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Plus.

Ports-wise, the Leica Cine 1 has three HDMI slots (one HDMI 2.1 port with eARC), one USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0, a built-in TV tuner, and a Common Interface slot. 

The Leica Cine 1 will be available for sale in Europe starting Q2 2023, meanwhile, a release for China and the US is slated for Q3 2023 and Q4 2023 respectively.

Tonight, Hisense, the Chinese multinational electronics corporation, has unveiled the company’s latest product – the Hisense Vidda C1. The Vidda C1 is seen as ground-breaking product in the screen projector category as Hisense had announced today that the Vidda C1 projector is the world’s first 4K resolution multicolour screen projector.

Let’s start with the projector headlight. The Hisense Vidda C1 is able to output visual media onto your screen at up to 1350 ANSI lumens with the colour gamut coverage reaching 202% in the BT.709 colour space. The colour accuracy values are relatively shocking at △ E≈0.9, with 10-bit colour depth to boot as well. 

The screen projector can also support refresh rates of up to 240Hz, utilise MEMC motion refresh rate enhancement technology, decode HDR 10+ visual media and even output it accordingly. 

Coming to the silicon under the hood, the Hisense Vidda C1 is powered by a MediaTek MT9669 SoC with 4GB RAM + 64GB of internal storage. Paired with the CMOS and ToF sensors onboard, the screen projector can gather data from your surroundings, then use artificial intelligence to auto-calibrate the screen output for the best multimedia experience. For example, the screen projector can auto-calibrate for focus, tilting alignment, screen size and even orientation depending on the surrounding situation.

Hisense’s marketing materials state that the recommended projection size of Vidda C1 is 80~150 inches. With a rated latency of only 12ms and support for refresh rates of up to 240Hz, gaming on a 150-inch screen has never been this portable before. 

Last are the speakers. The Hisense Vidda C1 screen projector comes equipped with a dual stereo speaker setup with 2 10W speakers built on the exterior. The speakers are supported for Dolby Atmos and dts Hi-Res audio for those who prefer a more rich and immersive audio experience.

The Hisense Vidda C1 screen projector officially goes on sale from June 15th onwards and is available for only 6999 RMB (1051 USD) on its first sale.

Gucci, the globally renowned luxury fashion brand and Ōura, the Finnish health electronics manufacturer, mostly known for its Oura smart ring, have joined forces to create a new premium smart ring for the market. 

Priced at US$950, the Gucci x Oura Ring is equipped with all of the health monitoring features found on Ōura’s third-generation smart ring fitness tracker, but with an exquisitely luxurious exterior that is designed by Gucci.

So why should you consider dropping almost 950 USD for a smart finger ring, when you can get yourself a smart watch instead? 

Let’s start with the build, the Gucci Oura Ring is fully decorated with high-end premium materials, including a black synthetic corundum base, surrounded by 18-karat gold braids, and a single 18-karat gold Gucci logo. As you can already tell, these are far more elaborate than the Oura Ring Gen 3’s standard finishings which are offered in either silver, gold, glossy black, or matte black painted colourways.

Coming to the tech features of the Gucci Oura Ring, the marketing materials reveal that the ring is a tailor-made wellness tech product.

 “Revealing the idiosyncrasies of both the conscious and subconscious, the Gucci x Oura Ring becomes a full expression of the self”, the product claims. “With 24/7 heart rate monitoring, seven temperature sensors, and sleep analysis, the smart ring decodes each individual day through three daily scores measuring sleep, activity, and readiness. Each score adapts and responds according to the wearer’s personal patterns.”

As for the dimensions, since it is a finger ring, it only weighs in at 4 to 6 grams, but due to the miniature size, the finger ring does not have a screen. Instead, the finger ring is Bluetooth connected to your smartphone/another Bluetooth device to transfer your heart rate data and sleep cycle patterns over for storage. The ring is also rated for 100m depth of water resistance.

The Gucci Oura Ring is compatible with Apple Health and Google Fit health tracking applications for ease of analysis and reading your current health statistics.

In short, if you want to track your health, but you don’t want the size of the smartwatch or the fitness band, a smart finger ring might be your option. The Oura Ring Gen 3 retails for 399 USD, and if you want luxury to go along with it, the Gucci x Oura Ring retails for 950 USD.

If you are in the market for a miniature tracking device, currently your only purchase options are either the Apple AirTags or Samsung’s SmartTags and SmartTag+. However, it seems that one well renowned Chinese brand is looking to expand to the portable tracker market with their own iteration of the category soon – Huawei.

Recently, Huawei devices in China have received an update via the Huawei Cloud app on their phone stating that the Huawei Cloud app has added support for the “Huawei Tag”, in which the update log reads that the Huawei Tag is an ultra-wideband (UWB) tracking device that allows users to accurately locate their lost or misplaced personal belongings. 

News of Huawei developing a smart portable tracking device is not something recent, as back in November 2021, our team had already reported that Huawei had applied for the “Huawei S-Tag” trademark in the European Union. However, with this recent leak, it seems that the launch of the Huawei smart tracker may be happening soon, and by then, consumers will have a third choice to the duopoly that Apple and Samsung currently hold in the smart tracker market.

The Redmi A75 2022 Smart TV is a 75-inch 4K Ultra HD Smart TV with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The 75-inch screen is housed within narrow bezels, allowing the TV to boast an amazingly high screen-to-body ratio of 97.8%, which provides the user with an immersive experience when watching multimedia content on the device.

Huawei has been focusing on other products to expand its portfolio as it cannot generate much revenue through smartphones given that the brand is facing some heavy sanctions from the United States.

In line with that, the Chinese company has been focusing on a wide range of products and one of them is Smart Home devices. Last month, Huawei Smart Door Lock and Smart Door Lock Pro were announced in China.

Today, the company has started taking pre-orders for both devices. The Huawei Smart Door Lock is priced at 2,499 yuan (~$392) while the Pro model costs 3,699 yuan (~$580). The products can now be pre-ordered through Huawei Mall and JD.com and will go on sale from 28th April in the Chinese market.

Both these new smart door locks come powered by Huawei’s self-developed HarmonyOS, making it the world’s first smart lock to be using HarmonyOS. Thus, it is also a part of the HarmonyOS ecosystem and can be connected to other smart devices within the home.

The Smart Door Lock Pro is capable of 3D facial recognition and its AI architecture ensures self-learning that improves facial recognition over time. It is claimed to unlock the door within a couple of seconds of assessing the person at the door.

The company says that there’s a probability of 1 in a million that it will unlock the door for someone who ought not to gain access. It features a P50 Pro camera that can identify objects within a 150-degree viewing angle.

The device works for persons between 3.4 ft and 6.6 ft and can also work in both bright and dark light situations. The Huawei Smart Door Lock Pro has a 3.97-inch display that enables the owner to view persons at the door.

Huawei Smart Door Lock Pro also has several unlocking options including automatic, fingerprint, smartphone or smartwatch, password, NFC card, and a physical key. It is powered by an 8,800mAh battery that offers up to 6 months of daily usage.

A new report has revealed that Qualcomm has managed to retain the lead in the Global Cellular IoT Chipset market in the fourth quarter of last year. The company managed to lead the segment by a significant margin.

The news arrives from Counterpoint Research under the title “Global Cellular IoT Module and Chipset Tracker by Application.” This report added that China was the largest market, continuing to dominate the category as it accounted for almost 60 percent of the total shipments. According to Research Analyst Anish Khajuria, “Qualcomm, UNISOC and ASR held the top three positions in the global cellular IoT chipset market in Q4 2021, accounting for nearly 75% of the total shipments. UNISOC, Qualcomm and ASR were the top three players in China. For the rest of the world, Qualcomm led the market, followed by UNISOC and Intel.”

In the cellular IoT chipset market, Qualcomm secured a 38 percent market share in terms of shipment in Q4 2021. The brand saw growth both annually and quarter on quarter. Its rise was attributed to rising demand for its cellular modules in the automotive, router/CPE, retail, asset tracking and industrial IoTs. But despite having a significant market share, Chinese rivals like UNISOC and ASR are rising in popularity in the market as well.

UNISOC was the second largest cellular IoT chipset supplier globally, thanks to robust demands of its NB-IoT and 4G Cat 1 technologies. The firm had a market share of 26.1 percent. Similarly, ASR Microelectronics came third in the ranking with a 10.4 percent market share and also saw strong growth thanks to 4G Cat 1 and 4G Cat 4 module segments.

Xiaomi’s latest addition to its connected smart home ecosystem is the Xiaomi Wireless Bluetooth Power Switch available for 69 RMB (11 USD) in China, which could bring much more convenience to your smart home setup.

Let’s start with the design, the Xiaomi Wireless Power Switch comes in a matte white beige finish with two large rectangular buttons on the left and right.

Users are able to configure the buttons with customisable functions via the Xiaomi Home app, with functions like turning on the Bluetooth connected Mijia LED lights, turning on the Xiaomi Rice Cooker or activating Xiaoai, Xiaomi’s smart assistant integrated into its smart speakers to listen to your commands, with a press of a button from across the room.

The power switch is also configurable up to 7 functions at a time, with different methods of activation such as the single-press on the left or right button, double-press on each button, or a long-press on each button.

As for the battery, the Xiaomi Wireless Power Switch comes with an inbuilt battery which Xiaomi claims to provide up to 3 years of battery life. The 3 years of battery life was done in internal durability tests where researchers assumed that one’s daily button-pressing is 5 single-presses, 5 double-presses, and 5 long-presses.

Xiaomi mentions that they have designed the power switch for users to place it wherever they want. Whether it be a kitchen countertop, living room desk or connected to your wall, the design of the power switch will always be able to complement your surroundings.

Poco is a sub-brand under the Xiaomi corporation selling high value-to-performance smartphones at affordable prices. It is most well-known for its Poco F1 in 2018, and Poco F3 series in 2021. Both smartphones featured flagship Snapdragon 845 and 870 chipsets starting from only under 300 Euros.

In 2022, it seems that Poco is planning to make a splash in the industry again, but it’s not smartphones this around, it’s apparently a new smartwatch?

The news comes from leakster, Piyush Bhasarkar on Twitter. The post shares a screenshot of a listing of a smartwatch branded under Poco from the Russian Electronics Certification platform, EEC. 

The listing reveals a few details about the smartwatch. First, the smartwatch will be bearing the model number Poco M2131W1. Next is the manufacturer of the smartwatch. The smartwatch will apparently be manufactured by 70mai Co. Ltd. in Shanghai, China. If the name 70mai sounds familiar, then you’ll be glad to know that 70mai is one of the brands that Xiaomi currently integrates into their Xiaomi IoT(Internet of Things) ecosystem. 

70mai is not actually known for their smartwatches, but you’ve probably heard of their dashcams such as the 70mai Dash Cam 1S, Dash Cam A400 and Dash Cam Pro Plus. As for further specs about the Poco Smartwatch, no mention of specs were within the EEC listing and as of current, this is the first leak regarding Poco’s first entry into the smartwatch market. 

Back in November 2021, one Poco exec did reveal that the brand is expanding into ecosystem products in 2022.  “We always think smartphone plus IoT is a key strategy for us,” Poco Global head Kevin Qiu said. 

This suggests that earbuds, wearables(fitness bands and smartwatches) and power banks could be the first products towards building a Poco IoT ecosystem. After all, an ecosystem for Poco allows for a more seamless experience while also building brand loyalty among its current Poco customer base.

The Chinese governmental business registration agency, QCC, has recently updated its database in January 2022, and a reporter from ITHome has noticed that Xiaomi recently invested in a small tech startup called Ultraception that focuses on UWB technology.

From the database, it is known that Ultraception was established in 2019, registered under its CEO Dong Zongyu, and the company is currently worth 6.5 million in shares after Xiaomi had purchased shares of the company. From its company description, the company also dabbles in the data server business, the semiconductor business and in the telecommunications business as well. 

Ultra-Wide Band technology, also commonly referred to as UWB in the industry, is a radio-based communication technology for short-range use and fast and stable transmission of data. It is set to replace the infrared light sensors found inside of our technology today because UWB technology consumes less energy compared to infrared technology.

Although UWB technology has been with humanity since the early 1990s, it was until the 2020s when the technology was readily available to the general public with the technology incorporated into our smartphones, smart home and trackers. Most notably, the Samsung SmartTag Plus and Apple Airtags were launched in 2021 with UWB technology on board to enable more accurate tracking in a more power-efficient manner, since these devices are not meant to be plugged into a power outlet daily.

As for details of how Xiaomi may use this UWB technology for its products in the future, Xiaomi demonstrated that it will use UWB technology for controlling its smart home devices. With help from software calculation algorithms, Xiaomi had achieved centimeter-level positioning and ±3° angle measurement accuracy using UWB technology.

Xiaomi says that this Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology gives smartphone and smart devices spatial perception capabilities, similar to something like Indoor GPS. With this technology, the user can just point the smartphone to any device and a control card for the same will automatically pop up on the screen.

As of now, only the Xiaomi Mix 4 supports the UWB technology but hopefully, with the latest update on Xiaomi investing more into UWB technology, we hope Xiaomi brings this technology to more of its devices in the future.

Television technology has come a long way ever since its invention. From the old box-shaped CRT television that could only show “black and white” video, to the current market standard of slim and big-screen smart TVs that are able to show over 10 billion colours on screen at Full HD, 2K, 4K and if you are ambitious enough, 8K as well.

At Hisense’s official launch event for its first in-house 8K AI GPU chip on January 11, Hisense Vice President, Yu Zhitao boldly claimed that the television industry globally will undergo a massive wave of change in trends in the coming years. Yu claims that the picture quality of the TV shows and live streams shown on-screen will determine the purchase decision of an interested buyer to purchase the TV or not.

The Popular TV manufacturer, Hisense also foresees the coming future where TV manufacturers stop focusing to compete on screen size and sales numbers but instead focus on their smart graphics processing units(GPUs) and the sound system of their TVs due to changing consumer demands throughout the industry as a whole.

Yu mentions the two important reasons why Hisense has this prediction for the future of the TV industry. The reasons are that the TV industry is already reaching the limit of bigger screens and because of TV manufacturers playing the game of price wars amongst each other.

The trend of large-screen TVs in the industry is already popular due to many years of advertising from TV manufacturers saying that a larger TV allows for a more complete multimedia viewing experience. However, large-screen TVs have their limitations. When the screen is larger, and the shows are not upscaled to higher definitions, the consumers will start to notice the imperfections of their large-screen experience like more noticeable lower resolution, and colors being washed out due to lower pixel density. With that in mind, the GPU in a TV is more important than ever to enhance the TV watching experience.

Yu mentions that the category of 75 inches and above large-screen TVs has grown exponentially in the past few years and that as we are approaching 100 inches for our TVs, users now need better GPU rendering than ever to upscale and support a higher resolution like 8K. Hisense is already prepared as it has just developed its first in-house 8K AI GPU chip recently.

The last reason is the fierce but unhealthy competition between TV manufacturers, which Hisense refers to as the TV price wars. To illustrate, TV manufacturers advertise their product as a large-screen TV at an affordable and cheap price tag, and this price-to-screen size ratio seems to be what they are only focusing on. The “bigger screens, lower price” trend has made the market value of the TV industry trend lower, the revenue stream of manufacturers to trend lower, and stifled innovation in the TV industry as well.

In the end, Hisense emphasizes that if the TV industry transition to high-quality TVs that focus on other aspects like color accuracy, screen quality, and more complete sound systems, plus a transition from unhealthy pricing wars to healthy value wars (where the TV is bought on the basis of the value it provides to the viewing experience), then the industry will still have a future amongst other technology products like laptops, tablets, and smartphones as well.

Therefore, we can see many countries are now encouraging its citizen to walk, use public transport or cycle to school and work instead of using cars, by improving public transport services and introducing bicycle-friendly infrastructure to their cities instead.

China is no exception to the ongoing trend of reducing its carbon emissions, and it is even the industry leader in the expansion of its high-speed rail network in the past decade in efforts to reduce transportation carbon emissions. And now, the country is introducing an alternative transport to use on the road, hydrogen-powered electric bicycles!

An established Chinese bicycle-sharing platform, YouOn has launched its first in-house hydrogen-powered bicycles to the public on 22 December 2021. Currently, these bicycles are only offered in Changzhou urban city area in the Jiangsu province of China. As of the launch day, there are 1000 of these bicycles offered in the area at a rental price of 2 RMB per 20 minutes.

For the build of the bicycle, it is made of strengthened metal painted with bright pastel blue paint. The hydrogen fuel tank is inside the diagonal body of the bicycle, and the hydrogen power transformer/battery pack is located under the cyclist’s seat. Despite its many components, the bicycle is said to be lightweight as well as safe for cyclists to cycle in the city with no worries.

A spokesperson from YouOn highlighted the features of the company’s new hydrogen-powered electric bicycles: an amazing mileage of 70km on full hydrogen power, reaching up to speeds of 23km/h, and the ability for cyclists to save energy when biking on an uphill journey since the electric power can assist the bicycle going against gravity.

It was known that YouOn has been developing the concept of hydrogen-powered electric bicycles since 2017, and it had the first successful trial run of its first prototype back in October 2019. The main concern during research and development was to solve the hydrogen storage problem via engineering. YouOn had to develop a low-pressurized hydrogen fuel tank that could compress 30MPa to 2MPa to allow more mileage for the bicycle on hydrogen power. 

With this latest innovation, the mileage of hydrogen-powered electric bicycles has surpassed those of electric bicycles powered by Lithium-ion batteries. Realme only launched its realme TechLife sub-brand DIZO in India back in July 2021, but the DIZO sub-brand already has a wide range of devices under its belt ranging from wireless earbuds, smartwatches, hairdryers, and even beard trimmers for sale.

Well, Realme is planning to continue the momentum of its hot new sub-brand with a new affordable smartwatch, the Realme DIZO Watch R. Twitter user and popular Indian leakster, Mukul Sharma, shared on his social media as of late that the Realme DIZO Watch R will be coming soon to the market, and that the device will be launching first in India. 

In the post, he also attached the images of the box that comes with the Realme DIZO Watch R. The box shows off the design of the Realme DIZO Watch R, and the watch seems to be a circular dial watch in the color option of what seems to be either rose gold or mystic bronze. The box also mentions that the Realme DIZO Watch R is part of the realme TechLife family of IoT products. 

In the replies, Mukul Sharma also mentions that the Realme DIZO Watch R is equipped with a 1.3-inch screen. No other details such as specs, battery capacity, or the release date of the watch were revealed, but from what we have gathered from previous leaks, the Realme DIZO Watch R will be launching in January 2022, with the DIZO Watch 2 Special Sports Edition launching together with it on the same launch event as well. The Realme DIZO Watch R is claimed to be the affordable sibling compared to its more expensive brothers, the Realme DIZO Watch 2 and DIZO Watch 2 Pro.

In comparison, the DIZO Watch 2 comes with a 1.69-inch TFT LCD display, while the Watch 2 Pro sports a 1.75-inch TFT LCD screen. The duo comes with features like a SpO2 sensor, heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, camera & music controls, and call & SMS alerts. The Watch 2 has 15 sports modes and a battery life of 10 days, whereas, the Watch 2 Pro has a whopping 90 sports modes and 14 days of battery life. The DIZO Watch R is expected to cut the unnecessary gimmicks of its expensive siblings to reach a more affordable price tag.

But Oppo is looking to revive the industry as the latest reports from China show that Oppo has been granted patents to develop its own Smart Ring. 

An insider from China reports that from the QCC Database, they found that Oppo submitted a patent for its own smart ring, and it was approved by Chinese authorities. 

The listing in the database notes that the Oppo Smart Ring is an accessory, not an electronic product, and it is supposed to be a fashion addition to smart glasses. Coincidentally, Oppo just released its first-ever smart glass, the Oppo Air Glass last week. 

The Oppo Air Glass are a pair of AR(assisted reality) smart eyeglasses released by Oppo. The glass features futuristic styling with a single lens design and weighs less than 30 grams. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC, it features functionalities like weather reminders, schedule reminders, a Health app, and a teleprompter which will benefit users with speeches, presentations, and many more scenarios.

As for other details such as the specs, battery or design of the Oppo Smart Ring, it was not listed within the database. Hopefully, the development of the Oppo Smart Ring is already underway as the concept sounds interesting.

We’re approaching 2022, almost 9 years since Google made its first and last Google Glass. One might think that the smart glass industry may not be worth venturing, however, Huawei wants to prove otherwise.

In addition to announcing the rumored Huawei Matebook X Pro on the Huawei Winter Flagship Keynote on 23 December 2021, Huawei is also planning to release its first true smart glasses, the Huawei Smart Glass.

The pair of glasses is said to be powered by HarmonyOS, the in-house operating system developed by Huawei. Huawei is calling the glasses “your next smart personal assistant” and from the teaser video that Huawei shared, the glasses feature swappable lenses as well as left and right firing speakers on each arm of the glasses.

This announcement comes in piping hot right after Oppo announcing its first Oppo Air Glass at its Oppo INNO Day 2021 event on 14 December 2021. The glass features futuristic styling with a single lens design and weighs less than 30 grams. The Air Glass is also designed to snap onto custom frames offered by OPPO using magnetic components housed inside the Air Glass frame.

Huawei previously released two glasses under its name, however, both were in collaboration with spectacles maker Gentle Monster. The upcoming Huawei Smart Glass does not feature any collaboration branding and is rumored to be a brand new series in the Huawei family.

The current Gentle Monster X Huawei Eyewear II is currently still in stores for RMB 2499 to 2699 (393 to 424 USD). It comes in 4 sunglasses design options and 6 optical glasses design options. It also supports music playback and voice assistant reminders.

Xiaomi has just been awarded top rating for its IoT security by the Internet of Things Security Foundation (IoTSF). The group stated that the smartphone maker among the best in the world in terms of its security policy for IoT.

The Chinese tech giant had recently participated in the IoTSF 2021 Virtual Conference earlier this month, with the event being focused around IoT cybersecurity. Xiaomi is currently the world’s largest consumer AIoT platform and it shared its insights on IoT security in this event. Now, IoTSF released a new report that stated that the brand is one of the best companies implementing vulnerability disclosure policies, highlighting Xiaomi’s leading position in IoT security.

For those unaware, the IoTSF was founded back in 2015 and was made to address the growing threats to IoT applications. As of right now, the group has more than 100 members, which includes major players like ARM, Cisco, BSI, Mastercard, and others that are interested in finding ways to protect IoT security. In the event, the group also discussed various topics related to the IoT security issues while also sharing the latest researches and innovations within the field that would help build a safe,reliable, and trustworthy IoT ecosystem.

Notably, the IoTSF even shared a list of companies under the Contemporary Use of Vulnerability Disclosure Report. In this report, Xiaomi was on the “Green list,” which are firms that meet the basic requirements and also meet the “extended threshold test of IoTSF.” Other top 20 companies include, Google, LG, Microsoft, Bosch, BT, Canon, Panasonic, and more.

Tomorrow, on 10th August, Xiaomi will be hosting a new launch event where it will be launching the next-generation Mi MIX series smartphone — Mi MIX 4. Along with that, the company has a bunch of other devices to launch, including a new Smart Speaker.

While most of the upcoming products have already been teased by the company, Xiaomi has now teased the new speaker. The teaser poster says that Xiaomi’s new “high-end smart speaker” is small in size but can offer powerful output.

Xiaomi adds that it is not just a speaker but a concert hall for the computer. As the poster already hints, the new smart speaker will be adopting a cylindrical design, similar to premium devices in the market, including Apple’s HomePod. It is also expected to have support for different lighting effects.

It appears that the new smart speaker will be a part of the Xiaomi Speaker series. It will support UWB wireless transmission and can also cooperate with the Mi MIX 4 smartphone for a hardware-level smart home setup, offering an IoT experience.

Previously, in a teaser post, Xiaomi had stated that its first high-end smart speaker will launch with a ‘symphony of technology and art.’ The product might be the L16A Smart Speaker, which was spotted on WiFi Alliance.

The listing of the L16A Smart Speaker does not reveal any key specifications but it does state that the upcoming high-end audio product from Xiaomi also arrives with dual-band Wi-Fi support. This implies that it will be able to connect with users’ smart homes and would likely be able to act as a control hub that lets users control other smart home products can via voice commands.

This is just speculation at this point to know for sure, we will have to wait a day longer for the official event to take place.

Xiaomi has announced that it plans to announce new smart home products next week. The event will be a global one but some of these products should be limited to select markets.

The launch date is Monday, the 26th of July, and the event will begin at 20:00 (GMT+8). The poster hints at one or more of the new products being a smart cooking appliance but we don’t know which of its plethora of kitchen appliances it plans to launch. In its home country of China, Xiaomi sells a variety of rice cookers, induction cookers, and electric kettles.

Samsung’s IoT platform, SmartThings, is getting a new update for its apps that brings a brand new user interface. The new interface should make it easier for users to manage connected devices.

The new interface has five tabs – Favorite, Devices, Life, Automations, and Menu. Samsung explained in its press release that the Favorites tab brings together the most used devices, scenes, and services for quicker access. For the Devices tab, this is where all devices are listed including bulbs, TVs, and home appliances. You can view and control each device here.

The Life tab is where users can explore and discover new SmartThings services. They can also learn about new functions that will further improve their living experience. One example given by Samsung is SmartThings Cooking, which it describes as “a one-stop-shop that creates seamless kitchen and meal-prepping experiences”.

Automations tab is where devices connect and work together based on specific conditions set such as the light bulbs coming on when a door is opened. The Menu tab is where you will find the SmartThings Labs, Notifications, History, and Settings.

The new interface is already rolling out to Android devices and will be made available for iOS later. Samsung’s decision to update the interface is so as to have a uniform experience on devices. Last month, it announced the SmartThings Windows app which offers a similar experience.

In the statement, Samsung also confirmed that it has integrated the Matter protocol into its SmartThings ecosystem. Matter is a unified platform for smart home products that are designed to work across different services including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Homekit.

A Midea executive has announced that the company will continue to team up with Huawei to launch a number of products that feature the latter’s proprietary HarmonyOS platform in the near future.

According to a ChinaDaily report, the Chinese home appliance manufacturer is aiming to expand its influence in the smart internet of things by launching more efficient and improved connected devices. Xiaomi Jiangxu, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the Midea IoT, “The HarmonyOS system would cover almost all categories of our products, namely about 200 varieties, within this year.” The official believes that the operating system would enable it to build an efficient link between its products and the smart IoT system.

Xiaomi further added that “More home appliances products equipped with the HarmonyOS system would soon be available in the market.” The senior executive made this statement during a recent presentation of the company’s whitepaper to accelerate its “one touch” smart link system on its devices in China. Back in September 2020, Huawei had announced the launch of its HarmonyOS 2.0 version, which arrived with better support for Internet of Things products and better cross platform support.

The second version of the OS also arrives with support for smartwatches, in car systems, and even third party home appliances as well. Notably, Midea was one of the first brands that Huawei said would feature the latest version of its OS for its products. Xiang said that Midea’s “engineers have been working closely with their counterparts from Huawei to make a smooth running of the system in our home appliances products.”

OPPO has today launched the world’s first smartphone accessory that comes equipped with Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology — OPPO One-Touch Phone Case Set. Apart from providing protection to the device, it also has an interesting use case.

The mobile case comes in a Galaxy Gray color scheme and has a hand-feeling paint finish that offers a delicate and smooth feel. Equipped with UWB, it enhances the spatial perception of the smartphone through functional modularity.

With the one-key identity sticker, it can realize the one-key connection and real-time control of smart home devices. The one-key ID sticker comes in a two-color and two-material water ripple design.

The sticker has a hidden indicator light that acts as a switch status prompt. There’s also a USB Type-C interface to make charging easy and convenient. Additionally, the magnetic design allows users to easily place identification stickers on smart home devices.

Just like its predecessor, this new Mi AI Speaker comes equipped with six ring microphones and has support for Stereo Channel, allowing users to connect two speakers to get a surround sound experience.

It also supports combining multiple devices for playback in the whole house at the same time. The speaker also comes with a deeper low-frequency than the previous generation model. Xiaomi’s Vela Application Framework has two layers of its own. Accordingly, its Upper layer differs for different IoT platforms. However, the lower layer has system services including OTA(Over-The-Air), GUI, Local Storage, Scripting languages.

Preview Program Begins

That said, Xiaomi Vela can run on various chip platforms especially IoT devices. Thus it can unite different MCU hardware, software, communication protocols. The company mainly aims to support all application scenarios, and build an infrastructure for the IoT industry.

At the speech, Fan Dian also announced that Xioami’s IoT devices exceed 271 million. Including Mijia, 3800 partners are working on the company’s AIoT platform. The company has officially opened the preview program of Xiaomi Vela starting today. Accordingly, IoT companies including chip/equipment vendors. And developers are welcome to join the program.

Xiaomi has entered into a mutually beneficial contract with China’s Tell Labs that’ll help bolster its Internet of Things (IoT). The contract was signed on November 3 at Xiaomi’s Mobile Internet Industrial Park in Beijing.

Fan Dian, general manager of Xiaomi IoT Platform Department and Wei Ran, director of China Institute of Information and Communications Technology’s Tell Terminal Laboratory, respectively signed the cooperation agreement on the joint AIoT laboratory on behalf of the two parties.

The outfit will be known as Xiaomi & Tell Intelligent Internet of Things (AIoT) Joint Laboratory and will focus on the typical application scenarios of the intelligent Internet of Things, such as smart homes, to carry out user experience research, plan formulation, test evaluation, and exploration of new technologies and new scenarios. The joint laboratory will be built in Xiaomi Yizhuang Industrial Park and Taiercui Lake Base. It will create a one-stop service platform to provide technical guidance, standard interpretation, test plan customization, test verification, and technical consultation and training services for Xiaomi and Xiaomi’s IoT ecosystem partners.

Further, the joint lab will help Xiaomi and its IoT ecosystem partners to continuously improve product quality and user experience. The laboratory will also work with other partners in the industry to jointly create industry standards and evaluation programs to promote the healthy and orderly development of the industry.

As the world’s leading AIoT smart home brand, Xiaomi’s IoT platform has more than 271 million connected devices, serving 55.99 million households around the world, with Xiaomi’s virtual smart assistant XiaoAI having more than 78.4 million monthly active users.

Brands like OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme are focusing their attention on the connected device category and working to soon launch their own large IoT devices as well. This would have the Chinese brands soon announce more products in India, especially in the growing smart TV segment.

At the moment, Xiaomi leads the smart TV market in the region, although, Oppo is also set to soon enter the market as well. The Chinese tech giant will be entering the smart TV market, along with a new lineup of wearables products. Furthermore, the company recently unveiled various IoT products in China, which revolved around personal entertainment and other smart home products, as per an EconomicTimesTelecom report.

Additionally, Realme is also seeking to broaden its IoT horizons, with its recent launch of smart TV in the entry and affordable segments. Now, the brand will be targetting the mid tier to high end premium segments as well, with varying sizes. On the other hand, OnePlus is solely focusing on the affordable segment at the moment, which it expects will lead to higher sales of its smart TV business.

According to an Oppo India Spokesperson, “India is one of the key markets for us and we are constantly working towards introducing new affordable products which are essential for Indian consumers. We are accelerating into the era of the Internet of Things by actively expanding a richer IoT product portfolio.” Similarly, OnePlus India’s new Ice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Navnit Nakra, also added that “We are moving away from the old appliance world in India to connected devices which have the ability to talk to us. In the new focus areas, OnePlus will have a larger play in India and globally. We are trying very hard to see if we can launch new products around mid-November.”

OnePlus is looking to launch various entry level smart TVs in the region in India by 2021. It has already commenced the manufacturing of the Y series in India this year and by 2021, OnePlus TVs manufactured locally will also include the Q and the U series. “It is a massive investment from us to be closer to the market,” said Nakra. Although, investment size and manufacturing details are still currently unknown.

MediaTek, the known chipmaker, has conducted the world’s first public test of advanced IoT 5G satellite communications. The test was undertaken through Inmarsat’s Alphasat L-band satellite, with the trial being successful, according to a PR Newswire report.

The test had data transferred to the satellite Geostationary Orbit (GEO) 35,000 kilometers above the equator. Furthermore, the results obtained from these tests will contribute to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)’s Rel-17 standardization work on Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). In simpler terms, it is a broader advancement of 5G networking coverage, which will grow to soon include more services and technology.

In the test, a bi-directional link between the 5G satellite NB-IoT technology and MediaTek’s satellite was established. This broke new grounds for a truly global IoT coverage. Meaning, this is a very important step that builds on the foundation for a hybrid satellite and cellular networks that has huge applications in 5G IoT related services on a global scale.

Earlier today (14th July 2020), Microsoft announced that it is continuing to expand its partnership with Samsung to bring a digital transformation for real estate development and property management industries across the globe.

The new strategic alliance between both tech giants will have both companies work to optimize energy management, equipment maintenance, and more. This partnership will utilize Microsoft’s productivity cloud services and Azure IoT platform and Samsung’s smart devices and SmartThings platform. The announcement also builds on Microsoft’s $5 billion investment into the security of its own IoT.
