But unfortunately, due to issues with its folding panel, its launch was delayed a couple of times and was only made available to purchase in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/23/huawei-mate-x-5g-foldable-officially-released-in-china-limited-sale-starts-from-november-15/">November with Android 9.0 Pie</a> on board. By then, Google had released Android 10 and even Huawei itself had updated some of its smartphones to </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/emui-10/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">EMUI 10</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> based on the latest version of Android, at least in China. Sadly, the update for Mate X was delayed until now, which is being rolled to users in a staged manner.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-284887 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Mate X’s primary competitor </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Galaxy Fold</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has a display folding inside, whereas it’s display folded outside. This design was likely challenging to implement on the Mate X since foldable screens are made of plastic and they can be easily damaged even with fingernails. Hence, the phone was launched in the market after 9 months from its announcement with the same old EMUI 9.1 based on </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Android-Pie/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Android 9.0 Pie. </span></a>Notably,<span style="font-weight: 400;"> Android 10-based EMUI 10 was available in the market then. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Further, since the update for the Mate X was not a priority as it is a niche device for certain customers, the phone was stuck with beta versions of EMUI 10 since December. But now, thankfully, Huawei has started seeding out a stable </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Android-10/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Android 10</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> update to both beta and Android 9 users of the device.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The EMUI 10 stable update for </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Huawei Mate X</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> comes with build number </span><b>10.0.1.115</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and is targeted at users running the beta build version </span><b>10.0.1.110</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and stable build version </span><b>9.1.1.153</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> respectively. As it is an OTA update, it will take time to hit every unit and therefore don’t panic if you haven’t received the update yet.</span></p>

The best example for 2019 would be the in-display fingerprint scanner and the foldable displays. Samsung was one of the first to the race with its infamous <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung Galaxy Fold</a> that had brought the future near but with its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/18/samsung-galaxy-fold-display-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">own shortcomings</a>. Similarly, Huawei joined the foldable party with the launch of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate X</a>. However, unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X seems to be in pretty short supply. Huawei&#8217;s foldable units are reportedly being sold second hand for twice the price owing to limited supplies.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-284887 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-8-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>According to a past report, Huawei&#8217;s Mate X had <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/22/huawei-mate-x-sold-out-within-minutes-third-time/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">sold out within minutes</a> after officially going on sale (being sold for 16,999 Yuan or roughly $2,417). This points to the fact that the device is already a success with the company&#8217;s home market. However, the company is still behind shipment as it is struggling to supply the increasing demand. As of today, the Mate X has been<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/22/huawei-mate-x-sold-out-within-minutes-third-time/"> completely sold out three times</a> since its official launch.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/25/huawei-matepad-pro-5g-version-will-launch-in-q1-2020/">Huawei MatePad Pro 5G version will launch in Q1 2020</a></strong></h6>
<p>Owing to this explosive popularity, a few owners of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mate-x">Mate X</a> have decided to resell their devices for hefty prices. In certain cases, the Mate X was seen being sold for twice the original price. The second-hand trading platforms are being flooded with bids as high as 39,000 or even about 50,000 Yuan. Considering the actual price is 16,999 Yuan, it translates to two or even three times the resale value of a device. In other words, a massive profit margin is being made as the device is being circulated online through unofficial channels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-284848 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mate-x-5g.jpg?x10805" alt="huawei mate x 5g" width="690" height="567" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mate-x-5g.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mate-x-5g-300x247.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/mate-x-5g-511x420.jpg 511w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>The Chinese tech giant has hit all the right notes with its customers with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei </a>Mate X. Unfortunately, the second-hand trend might lead to some issues regarding future sales or even fake units being used to trick buyers. So for now, readers should be wary of any unofficial sale of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> smartphone and are advised to wait for the official sale that will arrive in the near future.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-284882" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X hands on pictures" width="640" height="419" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3-300x196.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Huawei Mate X</a> will take on the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold-5g/"> Galaxy Fold</a> that recently <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/12/samsung-galaxy-fold-sold-out-once-again-in-china/">went on sale in China</a>. In fact, the Mate X could get another competitor in the coming months, as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/motorola-razr-2019/">Motorola Razr</a> will hit a few markets in Asia in 2020 (China launch isn&#8217;t confirmed though).</p>
<p>Note that Mate X will only be available in limited quantities tomorrow. There will be just one variant available for purchase featuring 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage. The sale will begin at 10:08 AM on November 15 <a href="https://www.vmall.com/product/10086831441169.html#10086239677333">via VMALL</a> (Huawei&#8217;s official store in China). The Mate X supports <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G</a> unlike the recently <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/14/motorola-razr-with-foldable-display-and-snapdragon-710-debuts-for-1499/">announced Motorola Razr </a>and the Galaxy Fold models sold in the U.S. and China.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X foldable is priced at 16,999 yuan (~$2403). The company will also launch another foldable phone dubbed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/23/huawei-mate-xs-a-mate-x-powered-by-the-kirin-990-5g-arrives-march-2020/">Mate Xs powered by Kirin 990 5G</a> next year.</p>
<p>So between the Mate X, Galaxy Fold, and the Motorola Razr, which design do you like the most?</p>

The phone was first shown off at MWC 2019 but it took Huawei nearly 10 months to ready it for the commercial market. But now, the Mate X 5G is finally here and you can purchase it starting November 15 in China.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X 5G</a> will come in a single variant of 8GB RAM and 512GB ROM for 16,999 yuan (~$2403). This makes it even more <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/03/galaxy-fold-goes-on-vip-pre-sale-in-south-korea/">expensive than the Galaxy Fold</a>, which is already available for purchase in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/01/samsung-galaxy-fold-launched-india/">multiple markets across the globe</a>. However, Mate X&#8217;s outward folding design<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/06/opinion-poll-huawei-mate-x-vs-galaxy-fold-most-respondents-prefer-the-mate-x/"> received quite a positive reception at MWC 2019</a> and if you are ready to spend nearly $2000 for a foldable smartphone, pricing isn&#8217;t really your primary concern.</p>
<figure id="attachment_284817" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-284817" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-284817" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei MAte X 5g" width="690" height="920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-284817" class="wp-caption-text">Source: Weibo (包纸玩机)</figcaption></figure>
<p>The Mate X 5G will first go on sale at 10:08 on November 15 in limited quantities in China. The company is unsurprisingly offering an additional 50% discount on screen related repairs and replacement with the purchase.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/23/confirmed-flexible-amoled-display-on-the-huawei-mate-x-is-supplied-by-boe/">[Confirmed] Flexible AMOLED Display on the Huawei Mate X is supplied by BOE</a></strong></h6>
<p>The Huawei Mate X 5G comes with a 6.6-inch display on the front featuring 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 1148 pixel resolution. In the folded position, there&#8217;s another display at the back featuring 6.38-inches with 2480 x 892 resolution and 25:9 aspect ratio. When you unfold the display, you get a large 8-inch tablet-like screen to play with featuring an 8:7.1 aspect ratio and 2480 x 2200 pixel resolution.</p>

<p>Huawei is said to have used a double-layer polyimide material for the flexible screen that increases strength by up to 40 percent. Further, the innovative (falcon) hinge that supports the display reportedly has zero openings or grooves to improve its durability. At the back, the Mate X has four cameras, a 40MP primary sensor, an 8MP <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/telephoto">telephoto</a> lens, a 16MP super wide-angle shooter, and a 3D depth sensor as well. The phone comes with up to 45X zoom (3X optical). The primary sensor features <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OIS">OIS</a> and AIS for stabilization. The phone comes with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5G">5G</a> support with dual SIM dual standby.</p>
<figure id="attachment_284816" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-284816" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-02.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-284816" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-02.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei MAte X 5g 02" width="690" height="920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-02.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-02-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huawei-MAte-X-5g-02-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-284816" class="wp-caption-text">Source: Weibo (包纸玩机)</figcaption></figure>
<p>Note that the Mate X 5G comes with last year&#8217;s Kirin 980. The development cycle was probably too long for the device to feature <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/06/huawei-announces-the-flagship-kirin-990-and-kirin-990-5g-feature-up-to-2-3gbps-download-speeds/">the new Kirin 990 5G chip</a>. Underneath, the Mate X 5G has a 4500mAh battery with Huawei&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/supercharge">SuperCharge</a> 55W charging technology. This should ensure at least a day&#8217;s usage despite its large screen. Also, you get around 85% charge in just 30 minutes, so recharging the phone is going to be an extremely quick process.</p>
<p>In terms of software, the Mate X comes with foldable-specific features that include split-screen multitasking, and text/ image drag and drop between screens.</p>
<p>The company has also confirmed that it will launch an upgraded version of the Mate X 5G, dubbed the <strong>Mate Xs,</strong> in March 2020 with the new Kirin 990 5G SoC.</p>
<p>Mate X&#8217;s release marks the availability of the second commercial foldable smartphone in the market right now. The phone has <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/15/huawei-mate-x-release-reportedly-delayed-to-the-end-of-2019/">got a few upgrades</a> since its first showcase back in February, but it&#8217;s exciting to see that the phone is finally available for the everyday consumers.</p>
<p>Will it feature Google Apps? That&#8217;s not the appropriate question right now. Google app support is secondary. First we&#8217;ll have to wait and see whether its truly ready for the consumer market.</p>
<p>So are you excited for the Mate X 5G?</p>

It was first expected to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/23/huawei-5g-devices-roadmap/">launch in June</a> but didn&#8217;t. Then there were reports it will be <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-by-september-with-android-in-tow/">launched in September</a> but that didn&#8217;t happen. Now, new info says the phone will launch on October 23.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237954" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-MWC-launch.png?x10805" sizes="(max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-MWC-launch.png 879w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-MWC-launch-300x105.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-MWC-launch-768x268.png 768w" alt="Huawei Mate X" width="879" height="307" /></p>
<p>The source says the Huawei foldable device will be unveiled in China on October 23. Reservations will open up on the same day and sales will be live in the first week of November.</p>
<p>It has also been reported that only 300,000 units of the Mate X are available. This is less than the 700,000 units Samsung made for its Galaxy Fold which is the Mate X&#8217;s rival.</p>
<p>The new date may be real since Huawei&#8217;s CEO, Yu Chengdong, revealed during the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-30/">Mate 30</a> series launch that the Mate X will begin shipping in a month.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X will arrive with the Kirin 990 5G processor and not the Kirin 980 that powered the version shown at a pre-MWC event in February. A video that surfaced on YouTube a few days ago revealed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/15/video-shows-huawei-mate-x-has-a-dedicated-unfolding-button/">the device now has a button for releasing the screen</a> when folded into phone mode.</p>

It has been over 8 months and it is yet to go on sale as the release date has been shifted forward twice now. Between the period it was first announced and now, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> has redesigned the foldable phone in order to improve durability. An early unboxing video has now revealed one of the new changes in the design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-255962" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X" width="1300" height="1300" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg 1300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></p>
<p>The Mate X has an outward folding design which means you fold the screen backwards to use it in phone mode or forward to use it in tablet mode. The advantage this design has is that there is no need for a second screen when the device is folded, unlike the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Samsung Galaxy Fold</a> which has a second display outside due to its inward folding design. The disadvantage is that the screen is always exposed.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" width="696" height="522" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ek2yhJyV4y8?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Based on the unboxing video, the Mate X now has a button that needs to be pushed to release the display when you want to switch to tablet mode. Apparently, when folded to phone mode, the folded part of the screen gets locked down. So to release the screen and switch back to tablet mode you have to push the red button.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X is expected to go on sale later this month in China. The phone&#8217;s flexible display measures 8-inches with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 when folded out. When folded, one side measures 6.6-inches with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 while the other side is 6.38-inches with a 2480 x 892 resolution. The phone has triple rear cameras, a Kirin 990 processor, and 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.</p>

The phone is nothing like the smartphones we&#8217;ve ever seen before, making an all-screen design very close to reality. But we couldn&#8217;t help but notice that the Alpha is awfully similar to the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> Xiaomi prototype that featured a double folding design. Now, Xiaomi&#8217;s co-founder, Lin Bin has revealed why there are some similarities between the two.</p>
<figure id="attachment_278598" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-278598" style="width: 696px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design-.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-278598" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--1024x473.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi foldable design" width="696" height="321" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design-.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--300x139.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--768x355.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--696x321.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Xiaomi-foldable-design--909x420.jpg 909w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-278598" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable prototype features a dual folding design</figcaption></figure>
<p>Lin Bin reveals that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/">Mi Mix Alpha</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi&#8217;s</a> foldable that was teased earlier this year were developed in sync with each other. In fact, both the projects have been assigned internal codes in the same series. The two projects were developed simultaneously but the company could overcome the technical challenges associated with Mi Mix Alpha&#8217;s project recently which finally enabled them to carry out a small scale trial production.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-278607" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png?x10805" alt="Lin Bin Mix Alpha and Xiaomi Foldable" width="599" height="330" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM.png 599w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-3.42.50-PM-300x165.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px" /></a></p>
<p>This makes sense because the Mi Mix Alpha looks like a permanently folded version of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">dual folding screen protoype revealed by Xiaomi back in March</a>. Lin Bin&#8217;s comment also confirms that the company is still working on the dual folding design. We can&#8217;t say when Xiaomi will officially release the handset but given how it managed to bring the Mix Alpha concept to reality, the foldable phone may not be very far off.</p>

<p>Still, both the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold-5g/"> Galaxy Fold</a> and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> foldable had to face numerous technical challenges before launch. The dual folding concept from Xiaomi looks really cool but it&#8217;s even more extreme than the single folding design used by both Samsung and Huawei&#8217;s foldable. So it remains to be seen if Xiaomi can bring the dual folding design to reality anytime soon.</p>
<p>The Galaxy Fold is already<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/03/galaxy-fold-goes-on-vip-pre-sale-in-south-korea/"> on sale in South Korea</a> and goes on sale in the US next week, with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/24/samsungs-galaxy-fold-is-heading-to-india-on-october-1/">a release expected on October 1 in India</a>. Even the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/25/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-in-october-confirms-official-huawei-support/">Mate X is finally going on sale in October</a>, at least in China, confirms Huawei&#8217;s support. As the technology matures for mass production, we can expect to see better implementations of the foldable design in the coming years. And Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable could be one of those designs that make it compact and practical.</p>

That is why this recent confirmed report is so devastating. Huawei has just confirmed that the Mate 30 will launch without any Google apps. Instead, it will reportedly come with third-party alternatives running on a bespoke version of Android 10.</p>
<p>This is big news. For those who don&#8217;t know, the Google apps suite includes some fantastic tools like Google Maps, Calendar, Google Drive, Google Assistant and Gmail. At the IFA conference, Dr Wang Chenglu, Huawei’s president of consumer software, said the company was in the process of developing alternatives to Google apps and services, including GPS navigation.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-274004" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1091" height="562" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1.jpg 1091w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-300x155.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-768x396.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-1024x527.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-696x359.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-1068x550.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Huawei-Mate-30-Pro_5K_2-1-815x420.jpg 815w" sizes="(max-width: 1091px) 100vw, 1091px" /></p>
<p>Despite the loss of Google apps, it appears the Mate 30 will still be running on the latest version of Android, seeing how Android is an open source operating, meaning anybody can use it. In other words, the company&#8217;s much-touted HarmonyOS won&#8217;t be making its debut on the Mate 30, and presumably so with the Mate X if the reports are to be believed.</p>
<p>The new report, from <em>Nikkei Asian Review</em>, states that the Mate 30 series would be the first phone to ship without Google’s services. The Mate X, Huawei’s foldable smartphone, will be the second device to come without any Google apps. According to analysts, Huawei’s smartphone sales will see a drop of at least 10 million units in 2019.</p>
<p>This is a bitter pill to swallow for Huawei fans and is sure to have an impact on global sales. While the Android ecosystem isn&#8217;t as fenced in as Apple&#8217;s iOS, apps like Google Maps and Gmail are essential to most users. Expecting customers to use third-party alternatives or implement workarounds to access these apps is a very big ask.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-268731" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="650" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>
<p>We&#8217;ll hopefully know more when the phone launches against the odds on September 18. Based on these developments, things aren&#8217;t looking good for the Huwaei Mate 30, but we&#8217;re optimistic Huawei has some sort of workaround that will help them overcome this. We&#8217;d hate to see a promising device like the Mate 30 fail because of something like this.</p>
<p>With the Trump administration taking a hard line on Huawei, the company&#8217;s crisis appears far from over. Huawei faces a &#8220;live-or-die moment,&#8221; founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said in a company memo on Aug. 20. It seems this applies now more than ever, which is a shame.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Last week, Neowin had reported that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/19/huawei-mate-x-kirin-990-chipset-upgraded-camera/">upcoming Mate X will feature the new Kirin 990</a> processor. This essentially revealed the naming of the new processor. And today, Yanming Wang, president of Huawei CEE, Northern Europe, and Canada, confirmed to Techradar that the new flagship-grade processor from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> is indeed called as the Kirin 990.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_1698.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-252318" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_1698.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 990" width="600" height="324" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_1698.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_1698-300x162.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Yanming also confirmed that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin">Kirin</a> 990 will be built on a 7nm process and will be more power-efficient than its predecessor. He adds that the new chipset will power flagship smartphones from the brand in 2020 and comes with support for all mainstream <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/5g">5G</a> bands. However, he failed to confirm whether the chip will support <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mmwave">mmWave</a> frequencies that are currently being used in the US. We&#8217;ll know soon as the chip is said to launch at<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ifa-2019"> IFA 2019</a> in Germany early next month.</p>

<p>It is also confirmed that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Huawei Mate X</a> will feature this new processor and will come soon. However, according to earlier reports, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/15/huawei-mate-x-release-reportedly-delayed-to-the-end-of-2019/">phone was said to be delayed to November</a> instead of the earlier predicted September release. So it remains to be seen when the new foldable will actually make it to the market.</p>
<p>Another question that Yanming failed to answer was whether <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honor">Honor&#8217;s</a> 5G smartphone will feature the Kirin 990. There have been reports that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/22/mediatek-china-70-percent-global-5g-smartphone-shipments/">MediaTek is working to strike a deal</a> with Huawei for its cheaper 5G phone models. Honor could a very good candidate for MediaTek&#8217;s 5G chipsets, so some of its cheaper 5G flagships may not feature Kirin 990 after all.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Huawei Mate X</a> has been one of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/06/opinion-poll-huawei-mate-x-vs-galaxy-fold-most-respondents-prefer-the-mate-x/">favorite foldables in the market</a> especially because of its out-fold design. However, TechRadar learned at a Huawei press event in Shenzhen today that the company won&#8217;t be able to honor the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-by-september-with-android-in-tow/">earlier mentioned September release date</a>. In fact, it is very unlikely that we would see the phone launch before November this year. The exact reason for the delay is not mentioned but it could be anything from production complications, additional testing, or even supplier issues <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/20/us-tech-executives-to-meet-with-white-house-regarding-huawei-ban/">due to the ongoing trade war</a>.</p>
<p>However, the report states that the company is confident that the Mate X will be announced before the end of 2019. This time frame could be to ensure that the phone is available to purchase for the holiday season before the Chinese New Year, which kicks off early next year.</p>

<p>The report also adds that the company is planning an even better design for the next generation <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mate-x">Mate X</a> model. The new generation Mate X could launch as early as next year and could swap out the rear steel back for a glass-covered touch-enabled display. That would mean that the next generation Mate X could feature an all-display design with only a few bits of non-display elements.</p>
<figure id="attachment_266335" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-266335" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Richard-Yu-MAte-X-spotted-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-266335" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Richard-Yu-MAte-X-spotted-2.jpg?x10805" alt="Richard Yu MAte X spotted 2" width="690" height="920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Richard-Yu-MAte-X-spotted-2.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Richard-Yu-MAte-X-spotted-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Richard-Yu-MAte-X-spotted-2-315x420.jpg 315w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-266335" class="wp-caption-text">MAte X was earlier spotted in the hands of Huawei exec Richard Yu</figcaption></figure>
<p>However, it remains to be seen how the company plans to implement a glass design on a foldable smartphone. If you recall, the front display of the existing Mate X still features a plastic covering, mainly because plastic is flexible. So in order for the company to use a glass back with a display, it would have to make the glass foldable and it won&#8217;t be easy to make it mass production-friendly.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>RELATED: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/14/huawei-to-announce-google-maps-rival-called-map-kit-in-october/">Huawei to announce Google Maps rival called Map Kit in October</a></strong></p>
<p>Another question is the durability of a glass-covered back instead of the current steel back. Techradar&#8217;s report mentioned that the company&#8217;s attempt to replace the current generation Mate X&#8217;s steel back with a lighter aluminum body failed as it wasn&#8217;t strong enough. So, it remains to be seen how Huawei plans to make a glass-covered design possible on the next-generation version.</p>
<p>The final version of the Mate X is said to come with a slimmer power button and an improved &#8216;Falcon-hinge&#8217;. Unfortunately, if you want to be an early adopter you will have to go for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> because it will be available a couple of months before the Mate X.</p>

<p>Specifically, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> plans to invest around $1.2 billion in operations and marketing and another 1.9 billion in direct supplies in the Italian market. An additional $52 million would be spent for R&amp;D activities. This investment comes on the sidelines of a new decree passed by the Italian government that increases the power of the state to intervene in the matters of the private ICT (information and communications technology) sector which includes <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G</a>. The decree reportedly comes as a result of the government&#8217;s need to strengthen national security in the country&#8217;s strategic sectors.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/16/oneplus-huawei-flagships-offered-the-best-resale-value-in-china-in-h1-2019/">OnePlus &amp; Huawei Flagships offered the Best Resale Value in China in H1 2019</a></strong></p>
<p>According to the decree, Italian companies will be required to inform the government of any purchases in the ICT sector from non-European suppliers. If this decree is passed by the parliament, then the rollout of essential ICT infrastructure networks like 5G will be monitored.</p>
<p>Huawei is currently the world&#8217;s largest telecom equipment supplier and a leader in 5G technology. But this decree could give an unfair advantage to European companies like the Finnish <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nokia">Nokia</a> and the Swedish Ericsson who also supply 5G equipment to carriers. So, Huawei&#8217;s Miao has urged Italy to make the rules fair for all supplier and not just target non-European companies.</p>

That was not to be due to the issues that cropped up on the review units the company sent out to reviewers. The Korean company is now taken things slowly in order to ensure that the flaws on the Galaxy Fold are all taken care of. That means <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> may still get the crown as the first OEM to release a foldable phone. If rumours are anything to go by, the Mate X is expected to be launched around September.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-263121" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="1273" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2-141x300.jpg 141w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2-483x1024.jpg 483w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-2-198x420.jpg 198w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Ahead of the official release, the Mate X poster has been spotted in a brick and mortar shop in China. The poster doesn&#8217;t list any dates, yet it implies that the launch is close. The leader of Huawei&#8217;s Product Division had hinted in a meeting that the Huawei Mate X will be accessible in China in late July or early August.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-263120" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="1274" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-141x300.jpg 141w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-482x1024.jpg 482w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/huawei-mate-x-198x420.jpg 198w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Note that this poster alludes to the launch in China. For the global launch, last we heard was September, yet the US trade ban on Huawei definitely has an effect on Huawei&#8217;s product cycle. So, we can&#8217;t say for sure when the device will be launched globally.</p>

After the launch cancellation, Samsung promised that the Fold is coming soon, but we still don&#8217;t have a concrete release date.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237874" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy Fold" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Samsung-Galaxy-Fold-270x270.jpg 270w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></a></p>
<p>Company&#8217;s CEO, DJ Koh now admits to the Independent that he &#8216;pushed it through before it was ready&#8217;. He further adds, &#8220;I do admit I missed something on the foldable phone, but we are in the process of recovery&#8221;. As for the status of the foldable device, Koh states that mass volume testing is ongoing right now. He states that there are more than 2000 prototypes being tested right now before the market launch of the device.</p>
<p>However, Koh didn&#8217;t reveal an exact time frame for the launch. All he said was the phone would be launched &#8220;In due course&#8221;. Well, given this statement, don&#8217;t expect the Fold to meet us anytime in the near future. Maybe, we&#8217;ll see it come to the market alongside the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-by-september-with-android-in-tow/">Huawei Mate X which is said to launch in September</a> this year.</p>

Ever since then, the company has been consistently marketing and hyping the device&#8217;s launch, despite setbacks. We&#8217;ve even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-by-september-with-android-in-tow/">got a set deadline now</a>! Today however, we&#8217;ve got a bunch of brand new patents that give us a look at what Huawei&#8217;s deeming as the &#8220;Huawei Mate X 2.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/">Huawei</a>’s patent, <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/huawei-mate-x-2-opvouwbare-telefoon/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">found by <em>LetsGoDigital</em></a>, shows a phone that looks a lot like the Mate X. But this foldable screen folds inwards, not outwards. The screen has absolutely no notch. Instead, the multi-lens camera module sits on the side, just like on the Mate X, which means the camera acts both as a selfie camera and as a primary camera, depending on what you need from it.</p>

<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/could-these-new-patents-be-the-huawei-mate-x-2/huawei-mate-x-2-5/'><img width="696" height="532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-1024x782.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-1024x782.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-300x229.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-768x587.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-696x532.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-1068x816.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2-550x420.jpg 550w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-mate-x-2.jpg 1440w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/22/could-these-new-patents-be-the-huawei-mate-x-2/huawei-33/'><img width="696" height="531" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei.jpg?x10805" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-300x229.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-768x586.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-696x531.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/huawei-550x420.jpg 550w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s so different about this second-gen attempt? Well, the original&#8217;s screen &#8211; sort-of &#8216;screens&#8217;, despite being one OLED panel folded across the frame &#8211; was always exposed to the elements and prone to scratches. The second-gen model, this patent shows, has a usual front screen like any other smartphone, as well as a larger tablet-size screen. If this seems familiar to any of you, it&#8217;s because these is essentially the same setup as a the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a>.</p>
<p>There’s no question this Mate X 2 concept looks a lot better than the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a>, but can Huawei pull it off? Placing two large displays on either side of a thin frame is even more daring, which makes this Mate X 2 design a lot riskier. On top of that, this is just a mere patent, there&#8217;s no indication that this design will ever see the light of day. It&#8217;d be a shame if it never comes to be though, it&#8217;s such a neat take on the folding phone concept.</p>

<p>Where will the Huawei Mate X launch? &#8220;Any country that has 5G,&#8221; Pang told us, making sure to remind us that Huawei&#8217;s foldable phone is a 5G phone. This was likely stressed because the Samsung Galaxy Fold launched with a 4G LTE version (before ultimately being recalled), with a 5G version only spoken about once and never officially priced. This probably needs no mention, but it&#8217;s also quite obvious the US will probably never get to see the device.</p>
<div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><b>Editor&#8217;s Pick: </b><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/21/huawei-nova-5-nova-5-pro-and-nova-5i-officially-unveiled-specifications-and-price/"><b>Huawei Nova 5, Nova 5 Pro and Nova 5i officially launched!</b></a></div></div>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-255962" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X" width="1300" height="1300" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg 1300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></p>
<p>Now that big question is, what will the Mate X&#8217;s operating system be? Will the Mate X actually run Android, or will we finally see HongMeng OS? According to Pang, the Mate X will definitely be running Android &#8220;Because it has already been announced,&#8221; suggesting that it may fall outside of Trump administration&#8217;s ban on US companies from dealing with Huawei.</p>
<p>Huawei has used the last few months to improve the P-OLED screen on the device. Peng says what Huawei is doing to prevent it from getting caught up with the same problems that Samsung had with its foldable is &#8220;&#8230; a secret. But we have done a lot of tests, especially for that.&#8221; Whether this will hold true once we actually get the device remains to be seen.</p>

A listing for the Huawei Mate X went up on Taobao Mall earlier today for the price of 24999 yuan ($3610). Quite a bit more than the already staggering standard price of $2600. We have no idea how legitimate this listing is, though we doubt it&#8217;s real.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X was recently <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/08/huawei-mate-x-listed-sales-june/">listed on the company’s official online store</a> which indicated that it may go on sale in China soon. When the company had announced its 5G roadmap at the Huawei Global Analyst Conference <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/04/23/huawei-5g-devices-roadmap/">in April</a>, it had stated that the Mate X will be debuting in China in June.</p>

<p>Yesterday, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-20-x">Huawei Mate 20 X</a> 5G edition was spotted on the database of the 3C authority of China. It indicated that it may release in the Chinese market soon. After that, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> Mate X TAH-AN00 also gained approval from the 3C body. All this points towards the Chinese firm launching the 5G enabled Mate X foldable phone in China fairly soon.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x">Huawei Mate X</a> comes with folded cover display of 6.6 inches. The AMOLED screen offers 19.5:9 aspect ratio and full HD+ resolution of 1148 x 2480 pixels. When unfolded, the Mate X gives access to an 8-inch outer OLED display that supports a resolution of 2200 x 2480 pixels. It comes running Android Pie with EmUI out of the box, but that could change soon.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-255962" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X" width="1300" height="1300" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1.jpg 1300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-1068x1068.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-1-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px" /></p>
<p>The Kirin 980 chipset of the Mate X is paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. You also get an extra microSD card slot, which is nice. The Leica engineered quad camera setup features a 40MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8MPtelephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, a 16MP ultrawide lens with f/2.2 aperture and a ToF 3D camera. The Mate X comes with a side-mounted fingerprint reader. Its packed with 4,500mAh battery that supports 55W rapid charging through USB-C.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-238240" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/huawei-mate-x-4.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X" width="690" height="1081" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/huawei-mate-x-4.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/huawei-mate-x-4-191x300.jpg 191w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/huawei-mate-x-4-654x1024.jpg 654w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>The Mate X is Huawei&#8217;s first foldable phone which was announced at a pre-MWC 2019 event in Barcelona. The device, unlike its rival, the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/"> Galaxy Fold</a>, folds outwards and not inwards. At the launch, Huawei said the device will be available for purchase by the middle of the year.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, the device was listed on the official online store and the listing revealed it will be available in June. <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, on the other hand, already sent out review units to YouTubers and tech blogs. However, just a day after usage, there were reports of damaged displays.</p>
<p>The rumor about the postponement of the Mate X might have surfaced due to the issues with the Galaxy Fold, probably as a way to carry out more tests on the device before release. However, insiders have revealed Huawei will be sticking to its release schedule.</p>
<p>The Mate X has a large 8&#8221; flexible display with a 2480 x 2200 resolution. It folds into a phone with a 6.6-inch display on one side and a 6.38&#8221; display on the other side. It is powered by the Kirin 980 which is paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of expandable storage.</p>
<p>Due to its design, the Mate X&#8217;s triple rear cameras  (40MP + 16MP + 8MP) also double as its front-facing cameras. The device has the Balong 5000 modem inside it which means it supports 5G networks. It also packs a 4,500mAh battery with support for 55W fast-charging technology.</p>

<p>Huawei has put a price tag of €2299 (~$2607) on the Mate X.</p>

<p>Speaking to <em>GSMArena</em>, Richard Yu said half of their flagships in two years could be foldable. Technically, that is just two phones if we are talking about Huawei-branded flagships only.</p>
<blockquote><p>I think that on a flagship level in two years, half of our devices could be foldable. &#8211; Huawei CEO, Richard Yu</p></blockquote>
<p>The Chinese giant has two main flagship series &#8211; the P series and the Mate series. Our guess is the Pro version of both series will be the foldable phones while the non-pro model will stick to the traditional design. If we decide to add the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/honor">Honor</a> brand, then there might be more foldable phones and the likely model will be the Magic series.</p>
<p>The Mate X is actually more expensive than the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> which is its closest rival. However, the Huawei executive believes the price of foldable phones will reduce in the coming years, even selling for the same price as current flagships.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">READ MORE:</span> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/30/huawei-p30-pro-first-update-brings-camera-optimizations-and-many-improvements/">Huawei P30 Pro first update brings camera optimizations and many improvements</a></strong><span id="more-244119"></span></p>
<p>There are also plans to make smaller sized models according to Mr. Yu. “In the future, we can make a foldable phone sized in half of this one [P30 Pro], we have plans for a smaller foldable phone.&#8221; he said.</p>

It will not just be about increasing the connection speed, as this new generation of technology will change the way people use the internet and every connected device. In the mobile devices sector, chipmakers have already released their first <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/24/huawei-announces-balong-5000-5g-modem-with-up-to-6-5-gbps-5g-speeds-in-china/">5G modems for mobile phones</a>. Just look at the Snapdragon X50 by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> or the Balong 5000 recently released by Huawei. But we are yet to see a 5G-enabled device in the market. Here, you will find all the 5G-ready phones that are already official as well as every <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/5g">5G</a> phone that is actually expected to debut in 2019.</p>
<h2></h2>
<h2>Announced 5G smartphones</h2>
<h3>Samsung Galaxy S10 5G</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241215" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1200" height="800" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1-1.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/1-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>The 5G version of the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s10">Galaxy S10</a> is currently the most powerful smartphone ever released from the Korean giant and it will be among the first 5G phones to hit the global market. It will come in two versions: one with the Exynos 9820 chipset for the European market and another with the Snapdragon 855 for the U.S. market. It is not a smartphone for everyone as it will be costly. It sports a huge 6.7-inch display and a big 4500 mAh battery, as well as the most impressive camera department ever seen until now, with 4 sensors on its rear side.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Motorola Moto Z3</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241216" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1280" height="929" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-1.jpg 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-1-300x218.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-1-768x557.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2-1-1024x743.jpg 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/product/motorola-moto-z3">Motorola Moto Z3</a> was released in 2018 and, to be honest, it is not a 5G phone by default. But we included it in our list because it will support the connectivity thanks to an additional accessory that <del>will be released</del> has finally been released this week. We are talking about a special Moto Mod that can be stuck on its rear side. The additional module will probably have its own Snapdragon 855 chipset and it will even contain an additional battery to improve the battery life of the Moto Z3. The Moto Mod will also be compatible with other supported Motorola devices.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241217" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/3-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="738" height="415" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/3-1.jpg 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/3-1-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></p>
<p>Xiaomi announced the 5G version of the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-3">Mi Mix 3</a> back in December, but it still hasn&#8217;t hit the shelves. It will be officially launched in May. It is the vanilla Mi Mix 3 with the addition of the Snapdragon 855 chipset and a Snapdragon X50 modem that is not present on the standard version. The modem, paired with the Snapdragon 855 fusion platform, enables the new connectivity and its blazing speeds. This version will be available in the memory configuration with 10 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal storage. Obviously, the price will be higher than the vanilla Mi Mix 3: it will cost €599 in the European market, as announced during Mobile World Congress.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Royole FlexPai</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241218" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/4.jpeg?x10805" alt="" width="810" height="456" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/4.jpeg 810w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/4-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/4-768x432.jpeg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left">Royole FlexPai is the world&#8217;s first phone with a foldable display. Everyone thought that Samsung would announce the world&#8217;s first foldable phone, but it was not so and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/20/samsung-galaxy-fold-is-official-dual-displays-dual-batteries-6-cameras-and-a-whopping-1980-price-tag/">Galaxy Fold debuted months after</a>. Royole FlexPai is also a 5G-ready phone, but it still does not support the new technology. The company confirmed that Royole FlexPai will get the support to the new connectivity with a software update that will be rolled out when necessary. Indeed, as for now, carriers still did not enable the new networks, so it would be kinda useless.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Huawei Mate X</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241220" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="530" height="298" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5.jpg 530w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px" /></p>
<p>Samsung officially unveiled its first 5G phone less than a month ago, and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> did not just watch its rival taking all the glory. The Chinese company unveiled its first 5G smartphone, which is also its first foldable smartphone, at MWC 2019. We are talking about the wonderful <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/23/huaweis-foldable-phone-is-called-the-mate-x-poster-and-specs-leaks/">Huawei Mate X</a>,  which, according to the first polls, is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/06/opinion-poll-huawei-mate-x-vs-galaxy-fold-most-respondents-prefer-the-mate-x/">even more appreciated than the first Samsung&#8217;s foldable phone</a>. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Fold, this device will come with an external foldable display instead of an internal one. So, the same display will be used as both a smartphone and a tablet screen. The device is powered by a Kirin 980 chipset paired with a Balong 5000 5G modem, that is actually the fastest 5G modem ever mounted on a mobile phone. It is able to reach connection speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. The only faster modem is the Snapdragon X55 which can reach up to 7 Gbps, but there still isn&#8217;t any phone with this modem. Huawei Mate X will hit the shelves in the summer, after the Samsung Galaxy Fold which will go in commerce starting from May.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>LG V50 ThinQ</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241221" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/6.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1024" height="683" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/6.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/6-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lg">LG</a>&#8216;s first 5G smartphone will be the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/lg-v50-thinq-5g/">V50 ThinQ</a> and it was officially announced at MWC 2019 on February 24. For the first time, the Korean company launched a flagship from the V series alongside another flagship from the G series. Just like every upcoming 5G phone with the Snapdragon 855 platform, it will include a Snapdragon X50 modem. It is equipped with a 6.4-inch display and it boasts a total of five cameras: three on the back and two on the front, including wide angle sensors and a telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom. Alongside the Snapdragon 855 chipset, there are 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh and it supports both fast charging and wireless charging.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241222" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/7.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="413" height="299" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/7.jpg 413w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/7-300x217.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px" /></p>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/zte">ZTE</a>&#8216;s latest flagship was the Axon 9 Pro and it was the one and only flagship phone released by the company in 2018. Now, the Chinese giant has finally unveiled another flagship, and it is a 5G smartphone. ZTE officially announced the handset at MWC 2019 and its name is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-axon-10-pro-5g/">Axon 10 Pro</a>: the natural successor of the Axon 9 Pro. As you probably expected, under the hood there is a Snapdragon 855 chipset and a Snapdragon X50 5G modem. It comes with a standard waterdrop design and a 6.47-inch display, and it is waterproof with the IP68 certification. Its rear side houses a triple camera setup with a main 48 MP sensor, a 20 MP ultrawide lens and an 8 MP telephoto sensor. There is also a big 4000 mAh battery. We do not expect it to be affordable, but it will be surely less expensive than Samsung&#8217;s and Huawei&#8217;s 5G flagships.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Vivo Apex 2019</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-233679" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Vivo-Apex-2019-Featured.png?x10805" alt="Vivo Apex 2019 Featured" width="720" height="420" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Vivo-Apex-2019-Featured.png 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Vivo-Apex-2019-Featured-300x175.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></p>
<p>Just like the sister companies Oppo and OnePlus, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/vivo">Vivo</a> will bring its own 5G smartphone to the market, but we do not know where and when. Some reports hinted at a launch in the market during 2020, so we are still far from its final release. For now, the first 5G phone by Vivo is still a concept phone: we are talking about the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/24/vivo-apex-2019-hands-on-pictures-take-us-into-the-future-check-em-out/">Vivo Apex 2019</a> unveiled less than two months ago. It is the company&#8217;s first holeless phone, it does not even have a USB-C port for charging (it relies on a magnetic MagPort), nor does it have any physical keys.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Upcoming 5G smartphones</h2>
<h3>Honor</h3>
<p>A report recently hinted at the fact that even Huawei&#8217;s sub-brand <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/honor">Honor</a> is planning the release of a 5G phone. Honor is no more just a &#8220;cheaper&#8221; version of Huawei and the arrival of its first 5G phone was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/28/honors-foldable-smartphone-could-be-released-in-2020/">even hinted by Honor&#8217;s president in a recent interview.</a> Unfortunately, at the moment we do not have any info about its specs and there are no leaks about it, but its imminent arrival in in the next couple of years is obvious.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>OnePlus</h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-241224" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/9-3.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="654" height="368" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/9-3.jpg 654w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/9-3-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px" /></p>
<p>Even <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oneplus">OnePlus</a> will unveil its first 5G smartphone soon, but surprisingly, it is not supposed to be the OnePlus 7 as everyone expected. Instead, it is supposed to be a concept phone. According to the CEO, the phone will be costlier than any OnePlus handset released until now, but it was already expected. It may hit the shelves with a higher price tag of around $200 to $300 than other OnePlus devices. Not excessive, but still high. The Chinese company showed off a prototype of its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/13/oneplus-5g-smartphone-mwc-2019/">first 5G phone at MWC 2019 with the support to cloud gaming</a>. However, the phone was enclosed in a big case and we could only see its display. A screen which distinguishes from other models with its ultra tall 21:9 aspect ratio. The phone will be most likely powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset.</p>

</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Sony</h3>
<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/sony">Sony</a> attended MWC 2019 with its whole line-up of smartphones of 2019. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-1/">Sony Xperia 1</a> is the flagship, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-10/">Sony Xperia 10</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-10-plus/">10 Plus</a> are the mid-rangers and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/sony-xperia-l3/">Sony Xperia L3</a> is the entry-level device of the line-up. Of these devices, none comes with support for 5G connectivity. It boasts a 4K display and it will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC. It is even the first Sony smartphone with a triple rear camera. But it does not have a Snapdragon X50 5G modem inside.</p>
<p>But Sony still showed a prototype 5G phone at MWC 2019: it is internally known as the AG-1 and Sony said that it has no correlation with its first finalized 5G phone. The company also said that it is investing a lot on 5G, but it did not give an official launch date for its first 5G phone and only stated that it will arrive in the near future. The prototype was equipped with the Snapdragon 855 chipset and the Snapdragon X50 5G modem with the support to sub-6GHz and mmWave technologies. It had a 21:9 display just like the Xperia 1.</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>Oppo</h3>
<p>Even the Chinese manufacturer, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">Oppo</a> showcased a smartphone with this new connectivity at MWC 2019. Just like most of the 5G phones out there, it will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. The phone may even come with the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/17/oppos-10x-lossless-zoom-camera-tech-to-be-mass-produced-in-the-first-half-of-2019/"> new 10x zoom technology patented</a> by the company which will allow zooming up to 10x without losing detail. The company said it was the world&#8217;s first smartphone manufacturer to finalize a 5G data connection on a phone back in 2015, and they were also the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/11/30/oppo-wechat-video-calling-5g-smartphone/">first to make a 5G group call on WeChat</a>.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So these were the 5G smartphones showcased, released or coming your way in the near future. It is worth noting that despite 5G support, it would still take quite a while for this tech to be mainstream. So while we are excited about these phones, understand that support for 5G is more like future proofing your smartphone rather than guaranteeing that you&#8217;ll enjoy the benefits of 5G the moment you get the device.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Have we missed out on any particular manufacturer or phone? Do let us know. Also, which model are you most excited about?</p>

Samsung showed off its Galaxy Fold a few days back, followed by Huawei’s unique take on the design. But one thing’s clear. Foldables aren’t meant for the masses, not at least in the initial period. We are still a few months away from getting our hands on the recently announced foldables. The announcements were basically a formality as we still haven’t got a good look at the devices from both Samsung and Huawei. But these aren’t the only two manufacturers trying out their luck in this market.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Other Chinese companies are working hard to perfect their foldable versions. We have already <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/23/xiaomi-dual-flex-mix-flex-the-worlds-first-double-folding-phone-revealed-in-hands-on-video/">seen the one from Xiaomi</a>, but it’s still in the prototype stage. Now, even <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a> confirmed that it has been working on one, but unfortunately, you won’t be able to get your hands on it. The company’s VP, Brian Shen showed off a few real images of the OPPO <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">Foldable</a> smartphone but went on to say that they had no plans to mass produce it.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijponcbdj34mo334b2i.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-238130" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijponcbdj34mo334b2i.jpg?x10805" alt="OPPO Foldable Phone 4" width="690" height="460" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijponcbdj34mo334b2i.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijponcbdj34mo334b2i-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The OPPO Foldable phone has a similar design <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/24/huawei-mate-x-worldss-fastest-thinnest-and-most-expensive-5g-foldable-phone/">as the Mate X</a>. And judging from the consumer response so far, it’s clear that the Mate X’s out folding design is preferred. So, it’s possible that this design would catch on among other manufacturers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The decision to not mass produce the device isn’t really surprising. The technology is still in the nascent stages. It’s really a huge bet to just mass produce these devices which will have a very niche market considering their exorbitant price tag. This year’s release is more of a proof of concept rather than a device that’s worth mass production. That said, Mate X is one phone that we all are looking forward to. Despite being a first generation product, if the hardware and software work close to what we are expecting, then the company will have a winner this year.</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijq74gdzj34mo334hdz.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-238132" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijq74gdzj34mo334hdz.jpg?x10805" alt="OPPO Foldable Phone 2" width="690" height="460" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijq74gdzj34mo334hdz.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/007a578Zgy1g0ijq74gdzj34mo334hdz-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But at present, it looks as if other manufacturers are happy watching how the market unfolds. If things go well for Samsung and Huawei, expect a lot more foldables entering the market next year. </span></p>

<p>Announced at a pre-MWC event in Barcelona, Huawei claims the Mate X is the fastest foldable 5G phone. It is also the thinnest and most expensive. Before we get to the price, let&#8217;s take a look at the features of the device.</p>
<h4><strong>Mate X Design</strong></h4>
<p>The Mate X has what is called “Falcon Wing Design”. Unlike <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>&#8216;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/20/samsung-galaxy-fold-is-official-dual-displays-dual-batteries-6-cameras-and-a-whopping-1980-price-tag/">Galaxy Fold</a>, it folds completely flat with no visible gap. Huawei says the hinge system used in the phone is patented and has over 100 components.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237955" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-design.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X design" width="847" height="1067" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-design.jpg 847w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-design-238x300.jpg 238w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-design-768x967.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-design-813x1024.jpg 813w" sizes="(max-width: 847px) 100vw, 847px" /></p>
<p>When unfolded, the Mate X is 5.4 mm thick &#8211; thinner than the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-ipad-pro-12-9-2018-wi-fi/">Apple iPad Pro 2018</a>, and when folded, it is just 11 mm thick. The device weighs 295 grams. There is no audio jack but there is a USB type-c port. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that doubles as the power button.</p>
<p>Worried that the phone is fragile? Huawei has a specially made case for it that offers full protection.</p>
<h4><strong>Mate X Specs</strong></h4>
<p>The Huawei Mate X has a large 8&#8221; screen with a 2480 x 2200 resolution and an 8:7.1 aspect ratio when unfolded with pretty thin bezels and no notch or “cliff” like the Samsung Galaxy Fold. When folded, It becomes a dual display phone &#8211; one side is a 6.6-inch (2480 x 1148) 19.5:9 display while the other is a 6.38-inch (2480 x 892) 25:9 display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237953" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-screen-forms.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X screen forms" width="866" height="311" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-screen-forms.png 866w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-screen-forms-300x108.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-screen-forms-768x276.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px" /></p>
<p>The Mate X is powered by the Kirin 980 paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It has dual SIM support (nano only) but only SIM 1 supports 5G. You can also swap out the second SIM card for Huawei&#8217;s NM card (256GB max.). The 7nm Balong 5000 modem brings 5G support to the device.</p>
<p>There are three cameras on the back of the Mate X which also double as the selfie cameras. The cameras were co-developed with Leica and are made up of a 40MP wide-angle lens, a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens. You can take a picture using the main display while the subject is visible in the secondary display that is facing them.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237951" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-battery.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X battery" width="868" height="288" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-battery.png 868w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-battery-300x100.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-battery-768x255.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 868px) 100vw, 868px" /> <img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237950" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-SuperCharge-55W.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X SuperCharge 55W" width="868" height="318" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-SuperCharge-55W.png 868w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-SuperCharge-55W-300x110.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-SuperCharge-55W-768x281.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 868px) 100vw, 868px" /></p>
<p>Just like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Mate X also has its battery split into two but for a total capacity of 4,500mAh. Huawei has also debuted its new SupercCharge fast charging technology which supports up to 55W. Huawei claims the new SuperCharge will allow you to charge the device from empty to 85% in just 30 minutes! This is the fastest charging technology on a device at the moment, dethroning <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a>&#8216;s SuperVOOC 50W charging.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X runs EMUI 9.1.1 based on Android 9 Pie. It has NFC, dual-frequency GPS, Bluetooth 5.0.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237948" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-price.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X price" width="873" height="310" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-price.png 873w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-price-300x107.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-price-768x273.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-price-870x310.png 870w" sizes="(max-width: 873px) 100vw, 873px" /></p>

It&#8217;s an interesting device albeit with a pretty steep price. <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> will announce its own foldable device in a few days at MWC 2019 and a picture of a poster taken at the event has revealed it will launch as the Mate X.</p>
<p>Yes, Huawei&#8217;s foldable phone will be commercially known as the Mate X and not the Mate F, or Mate Flexi, or Mate Fold. Huawei actually <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/02/12/huawei-trademarks-mate-x-moniker-upcoming-smartphone/">applied for a trademark</a> for the name back in February last year. Even at a point, the Mate X was thought to be the name of the device that eventually launched as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-rs-porsche-design/">Mate RS Porsche Design</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237822" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-foldable-phone.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X foldable phone" width="917" height="704" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-foldable-phone.jpg 917w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-foldable-phone-300x230.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-foldable-phone-768x590.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Huawei-Mate-X-foldable-phone-285x220.jpg 285w" sizes="(max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px" /></p>
<p>With respect to design, the Mate X has only one display, unlike the Galaxy Fold. It also has pretty thin bezels and doesn&#8217;t have a notch. It doesn&#8217;t appear to be as wide though. The flexible screen actually folds backward into phone mode.</p>
<p>The right side of the phone&#8217;s frame is also thicker which is not surprising seeing as that is where the cameras and controls are located. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner with a button above it and on the back is a triple camera setup.</p>

<p>The Huawei Mate X will support 5G thanks to Huawei&#8217;s Balong 5000 modem and will be powered by the Kirin 980 processor. There is no info on how much it will cost but we won&#8217;t be surprised if it is cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Fold.</p>

Initially, there were rumors that it was one of the P20 series, but that isn&#8217;t true as we already know none of the P20 series has that model number. However, the popular opinion is that this is the Huawei Mate X.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X is said to be a new flagship phone in Huawei&#8217;s pipeline. Firmware files have shown it has the Kirin 970 powering it and rumors say it will come with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.</p>
<p>While the former may be true since Huawei hasn&#8217;t launched a more powerful chipset yet, the latter seems to be wrong based on latest developments.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-180447" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Huawei-Mate-X-512GB.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X 512GB" width="600" height="293" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Huawei-Mate-X-512GB.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Huawei-Mate-X-512GB-300x147.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>The TENAA listing has been updated and it now adds the RAM and ROM configuration of the phone. According to the page which was updated on Monday, March 19, the Huawei Mate X will have 6GB of RAM and 512GB of storage! Yes, you read that right.</p>
<p>While the largest embedded storage on a phone for now is 256GB, 512GB isn&#8217;t far fetched and Huawei isn&#8217;t just making up numbers. Last year, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/12/05/samsung-begun-production-512gb-flash-storage-next-gen-phones/">Samsung announced that it was going to begin production of 512GB flash storage this year</a>.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X may likely be the first phone in the world to come with the new storage capacity seeing as Samsung itself didn&#8217;t announce a 512GB version of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. It also wouldn&#8217;t be a surprise if Samsung releases a 512GB version of its new flagships in future.</p>

<p>In conclusion, phones may not be the only recipients of the new storage. We may also see it in Always Connected PCs powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors.</p>
