<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-490255 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/India_SP_image_V2_Oct_11_2022.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="480" height="344" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/India_SP_image_V2_Oct_11_2022.jpg 480w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/India_SP_image_V2_Oct_11_2022-300x215.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px" /></p>
<p>The news arrives from a <a href="https://news.strategyanalytics.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2022/Strategy-Analytics-Samsung-Leads-India-Smartphone-Festive-Season-Sales-2022/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Strategy Analytics</em></a> report, which claimed that the South Korean tech giant accounted for 26 percent of all sales during the festive season. This period ranged from 23rd to the 30th of September 2022. During this time, Samsung sold more than 3.3 million smartphones. The report stated that its premium smartphone models like the Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S22 Ultra, Galaxy S22 Plus, Galaxy, and Z Flip 3 saw robust sales thanks to aggressive pricing and discounts.</p>
<p>Similarly, even its mid range handsets were quite popular, especially the Galaxy F13 and the Galaxy M13 that were heavily discounted during this sales period. On the other hand, Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi and Realme rounded up the top 3 rankings with 2.5 million and 2.2 million units shipped during the festive sales, accounting for 20 percent and 17 percent market share respectively. In other words, we can see that Samsung took a commanding lead over its competition.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-443120 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Graphite" width="4301" height="2868" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A.jpg 4301w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-630x420.jpg 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Samsung-Galaxy-S21-FE-Graphite-A-1920x1280.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4301px) 100vw, 4301px" /></p>
<p>Despite the iPhone 13 and older iPhone models seeing heavy discounts as well, Apple did not make the top 3 list. While the smartphone makers saw great sales overall, the market during the festive season sale period in 2022 saw a 2 percent fall when compared to the same period last year. However, while the sales figure saw slightly lower, the ASP (Average Selling Price) was higher this time around. This meant that the revenue growth offset the volume decline.</p>

<p>The news arrives from a <a href="https://news.strategyanalytics.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2022/Strategy-Analytics-Samsung-Hits-Highest-Global-Smartphone-Market-Share-in-Five-Years-in-Q1-2022/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>StrategyAnalytics</em> </a>report, which stated that the global smartphone shipments fell by 11 percent year on year to 314 million units in Q1 2022. However, despite the decline, the South Kroean tech giant managed to achieve a notable market share of 24 percent during the first quarter. On the other hand, Apple came in second with an 18 percent market share, followed by Xiaomi, OPPO (including OnePlus), and Vivo that rounded up the top five list.</p>
<p>According to<span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1"><a href="https://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.strategyanalytics.com%2Fstrategy-analytics%2Fstrategy-analytics-analysts%2Fanalyst-bio%2FWoody-Oh&amp;esheet=52701535&amp;newsitemid=20220428006390&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Woody+Oh&amp;index=3&amp;md5=1c297828f83aab16e006d8400fccfeb2" rel="nofollow"> Woody Oh </a> , Director at</span></span> at Strategy Analytics, &#8220;<span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1">We estimate Samsung shipped 75 million smartphones and topped the global smartphone market with a healthy 24 percent share in Q1 2022. It is the vendor’s highest first quarter performance by market share since 2017. Demand was strong for the newly launched flagship Galaxy S22 series, especially the higher priced S22 Ultra model. Meanwhile, Samsung continue to ramp up mass market A series in multiple markets.&#8221;</span></span></p>

<p>In other words, the company&#8217;s smartphone across multiple ranges saw great success across the globe. But as of right now, the global handset market is expect to further contract by around 1 to 2 percent in 2022. This is likely due to the effects of <span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1">geopolitical</span></span> issues, component shortages, price inflation, <span class="ContentPaneDiv"><span class="ContentPaneDiv1">exchange rate volatility, and the ongoing pandemic as well.</span></span></p>

<p>This is being attributed to the strong demand for the Apple MacBook Air which was one of the first devices to come powered by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-silicon">Apple Silicon</a>&#8216;s first chipset &#8212; M1.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-411563 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured.png?x10805" alt="Apple MacBook M1 Featured" width="1756" height="937" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured.png 1756w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-300x160.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-768x410.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-1024x546.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-696x371.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-1068x570.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Apple-MacBook-M1-Featured-787x420.png 787w" sizes="(max-width: 1756px) 100vw, 1756px" /></p>
<p>The report coming from the market research firm <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/strategy-analytics">Strategy Analytics</a>, the shipment of Apple MacBooks grew 10 percent year-on-year and the company has managed to capture around 10 percent of the overall market share.</p>
<p>With this, the Cupertino-based technology giant is now the fourth-largest laptop brand, just behind <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lenovo">Lenovo</a>, HP, and Dell. Apple managed to increase its market share because of the surge in demand for the heavily discounted MacBook Air in the third quarter. In Q3 2021, Mac revenue hit an all-time high of $9.1 billion, ticking up 1.6 percent year-over-year.</p>
<div class="col-sm-12">
<p>Overall, the notebook sector grew 8 percent year-over-year. That figure would have been higher had it not been for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chip-shortage">component shortages</a>, rising manufacturing costs, and supply chain issues, says Strategy Analytics analyst Chirag Upadhyay.</p>
<div class="col-sm-12">
<p>For the fourth consecutive quarter, Lenovo topped the chart with 15.3 million notebooks shipments and a 23 percent share of the market, registering a 5 percent growth compared to the previous year. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hp">HP</a> followed with 14.3 million units shipped and a 21 percent market share, reporting a decline of 5 percent year-over-year. Lastly, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dell">Dell</a> managed to ship 12.2 million units, accounting for 18 percent of the market share.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.strategyanalytics.com/access-services/components/handset-components/market-data/report-detail/smartphone-apps-processor-market-share-tracker-q1-2021-qualcomm-and-mediatek-capitalise-on-hisilicon's-challenges">report adds</a> that 5G application processors accounted for 41 percent of the total smartphone APs shipped in Q1 2021. Among them, entry-level 5G APs are sought after, such as Snapdragon 480 and Dimensity 700, which will help phone makers to bring the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g">5G connectivity</a> to lower price tiers.</p>
<p>Qualcomm and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> benefited the most with the forced exit of HiSilicon from the market due to several trade restrictions. Both companies gained double-digit shipment growth in Q1 2021. On the other hand, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hisilicon">HiSilicon</a>&#8216;s smartphone AP shipments declined 88 percent in the same timeframe, per Strategy Analytics&#8217; estimates.</p>
<p>Apple, Samsung LSI, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/unisoc">Unisoc</a> also witnessed growth in shipments as well as revenue in the first quarter. With the increase in demand post-pandemic and new technologies like 5G, the growth momentum is expected to continue throughout this year.</p>
<p>Huawei has already <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/17/huawei-sells-honor-subsidiary-to-zhixin-new-information-technology-co-ltd/">sold off Honor</a> to make it an independent brand so that it doesn&#8217;t have to adhere to the trade restrictions and can continue to grow. Now, it remains to be seen if Huawei will spin-off HiSilicon into an independent chip business.</p>

<p>A report from Strategy Analytics claims that the surge in demand is a result of eased lockdown restrictions in the first quarter and increased demand for new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/4g">4G smartphones</a>.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> remained the leading smartphone brand in the country with a 26.5 percent market share. The company is facing tough competition from Samsung which has captured an 18.6 percent market share in India.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-387032 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021.jpeg?x10805" alt="Indian Smartphone Market Share Q1 2021" width="768" height="505" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021-300x197.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021-696x458.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021-741x486.jpeg 741w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/India-Smartphone-Q1-2021-639x420.jpeg 639w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></p>
<p>Last year, in Q1 2020, Xiaomi had a massive 32 percent market share while <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> had only 16 percent during the same time. Now, Samsung is trying to surpass Xiaomi to become the leading smartphone brand in India.</p>
<p>The new devices coming from the South Korean giant, including the Galaxy M-series, A-series, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-f">F-series</a> are in demand given that they offer a smartphone from a famous and premium brand at affordable prices.</p>
<p>Vivo managed to grab the third position in the Indian smartphone market in Q1 2021 with a market share of 18 percent, an increase of two percent compared to the same period last year. It is just behind Samsung and could pose a threat to the South Korean giant&#8217;s position in the Indian market. It is also spending heavily in India to boost its brand and in line with that, Vivo has become a title sponsor of IPL.</p>
<p>Another Chinese company <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">OPPO</a> got the fourth position in the Indian market with a 12 percent market share. The company is gearing up to boost its position in India and is reportedly set to launch its own online store next month.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme">Realme</a>, which started off as a subsidiary of OPPO, is the fifth most-selling smartphone brand in India with an 11 percent market share. The company&#8217;s market share slipped from 15 percent a year ago, mainly because of the lagging <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/offline">offline presence</a>.</p>
<p>The Indian smartphone market remains highly volatile and it will be interesting to be seen how the market share of these brands changes in the second quarter as India again imposes lockdown-like restrictions amid surging <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19</a> cases in the country.</p>

The ship is said to have run aground due to high wind but human error isn&#8217;t completely ruled out at this point.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-380447" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal.png?x10805" alt="smartphone industry" width="763" height="479" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal.png 763w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-300x188.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-696x437.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-669x420.png 669w" sizes="(max-width: 763px) 100vw, 763px" /></a></p>
<p>The blockade has lingered for almost a week and has left hundreds of ships waiting on both sides of the canal which is a 200km shortcut from Asia to Europe, connecting the Red sea to the Meditteranean sea.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.strategyanalytics.com/strategy-analytics/blogs/devices/smartphones/smart-phones/2021/03/25/will-suez-canal-blockage-hit-smartphones" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Strategy Analytics</a> has now predicted that the blockade could have an effect on the already battered smartphone industry but the effect won&#8217;t be much. The industry is already faced with a shortage of chips, also affecting tablets, laptops, TVs, and cars.</p>
<p>The research firm estimates that the Suez Canal record less than 5% of global smartphone logistics flow. A lot of these components are shipped worldwide using other sea routes or by airplanes. However, if an impact will be felt by the smartphone industry, Strategy Analytics thinks it will be through volatile oil prices. Most of the vessels that are held up at the Suez Canal are oil-laden vessels. Thus, the delay may lead to yet another upset for the volatile commodity. A rise in the price of fuel will affect delivery trucks and factories that rely on generators and could lead to a slight price increase. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-380448" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-2.png?x10805" alt="" width="428" height="622" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-2.png 428w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-2-206x300.png 206w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/suez-canal-2-289x420.png 289w" sizes="(max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px" /></a></p>
<p>Efforts are still underway to try to evacuate the ship, said to be the size of 9 football pitches and as tall as the Empire State building, from the position of obstruction.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">As per Strategy Analytics, OEMs sold around 109.1 million units of connected TV devices (smart TVs, streamers, gaming consoles) in Q4 2020. Whereas, the figure for the whole year was 305.3 million units with a 7.6% YoY growth. Out of which, 186 million units were smart TVs and 81 million units were streamers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K was the best-selling streaming device in 2020. It helped the American eCommerce giant to dethrone </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Samsung</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> to become the world’s leading connected TV devices brand. Additionally, Amazon and Roku together led the streaming devices category with over 60% market share.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Talking about smart televisions, Samsung maintained its top position. However, </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/LG/"><span style="font-weight: 400">LG</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> slipped to third place as </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/TCL/"><span style="font-weight: 400">TCL</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> managed to come second. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Also, it is interesting to see </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Nintendo/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Nintendo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> in the fourth place. This clearly indicates how popular the company’s gaming consoles are despite their unavailability in a large number of markets.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">As far as Chinese OEMs are concerned, TCL, </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Hisense/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Hisense</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">, and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Xiaomi/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Xiaomi</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> ranked seventh, eighth, and twelfth respectively. <p><span style="font-weight: 400">Last but not least, Strategy Analytics predicts the global connected TV devices market to continue growing in 2021 as people are migrating towards internet-based video platforms around the world.</span></p>

<p>The report sheds light on the fact that people are buying tablets with a larger display, the majority of which measure larger than 10-inch. <p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/huawei/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Huawei</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is already going through a tough time since the United States government added it to the ‘Entity List’ last year. The report predicts that global shipments of 5G-enabled phones will peak at 199 million shipments worldwide. This will translate to an estimated 15% of all smartphone shipments. This is a huge leap from the 1% market share enjoyed by 5G phones in 2019.</p>

<p>The report also estimates that China, the United States, South Korea, Japan and Germany will account for 90% of all 5G smartphone sales. This is, no doubt related to the roll-out of 5G services in those countries.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5g.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-306487" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5g.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="640" height="399" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5g.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/5g-300x187.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>Strategy Analytics equally recognised that the deadly Coronavirus epidemic presently ravaging some parts of China will have an effect on 5G phone shipments. Of particular interest, is the disclosure that most of the shipments will happen in the second half of 2020 as the first half will witness slower than expected shipments for smartphones supporting the next-gen network standard.</p>
<p>In addition, the report recognised India and Indonesia as the two important markets lagging behind in 5G adoption rates as they are not expected to have mass-market 5G networks for at least another year.</p>
<p>Recall that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/11/5g-smartphones-sales-could-surpass-1-billion-by-2025-strategy-analytics/">Strategy Analytics had earlier forecasted</a> that 5G phone sales by 2025 could surpass 1billion units globally as more <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/22/affordable-nokia-5g-phone-coming-in-2020/">affordable 5G phones get launched</a>.</p>

One of its most popular endeavors is its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-watch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple Watch</a> series, which is a successful wearable lineup. Now, a report suggests that it has outsold Swiss branded watches in 2019.</p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/strategy-analytics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Strategy Analytics</a>, a researching agency, Apple&#8217;s sales estimates indicate that the Cupertino based giant has sold more watched in 2019 than all of the popular Swiss watchmakers. The figures reveal that the smartphone OEM sold 30.7 million Apple Watches last year. This figure marks a significant bump of 36 percent year on year growth over 2018.</p>
<figure id="attachment_285977" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-285977" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-285977 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Apple-Watch.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple" width="600" height="532" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Apple-Watch.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Apple-Watch-300x266.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Apple-Watch-474x420.jpg 474w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-285977" class="wp-caption-text">Apple Watch</figcaption></figure>
<p>In comparison, Swiss watch brands, altogether, sold over 21.1 million units in 2019, a notable fall of 13 percent in total sales over 2018. It indicates the still growing wearables market with Apple&#8217;s smartwatch offerings being a big hit in the market. Unfortunately, since Apple doesn&#8217;t publicize exact sales numbers, the figure above has been compiled after collecting data by various vendors by Strategy Analytics.</p>

<p>Neil Mawston, Executive Director of Strategy Analytics, stated that &#8220;Analogue wristwatches remain popular among older consumers, but younger buyers are tipping toward smartwatches and computerized wristwear.” This implies that the youth are more likely to buy a smartwatch over a traditional wristwatch, showcasing a change in generational preference in recent years.</p>
<figure id="attachment_276025" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-276025" style="width: 500px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-276025 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Apple-Watch-Series-5.jpg?x10805" alt="Apple Watch Series 5" width="500" height="500" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Apple-Watch-Series-5.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Apple-Watch-Series-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Apple-Watch-Series-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Apple-Watch-Series-5-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-276025" class="wp-caption-text">Apple Watch Series 5</figcaption></figure>
<p>Furthermore, another analyst from the research firm also stated that brands like Swatch, TAG Huer, and Tissot need to hurry if they wish to jump onto the smartwatch bandwagon. Again implying that the younger generations prefer digital watches over conventional analog watches. Notably, Apple&#8217;s Q1 2020 earnings for wearables and other IoT devices (internet of things) are expected to bring in 10 Billion US Dollars, a number that is higher than the revenue generated by its Mac computers.</p>

The data all seem to correspond with each other and shows <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> retained its position as the number one brand in terms of smartphone shipment for the whole of 2019.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-303329" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="727" height="426" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-300x176.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-696x408.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-717x420.jpg 717w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></a><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-303330" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-2.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="727" height="416" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-2.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-2-300x172.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/smartphone-shipment-2-696x398.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></a></p>
<p>Huawei maintained its 2018 record by staying ahead of Apple to become the world’s second best selling smartphone manufacturer in 2019. This is especially surprising considering that the brand has been grappling with an obnoxious ban by the US government hinged on security concerns. Huawei shipped an estimated 240 million mobile phones, a tad higher than its entire shipment in 2018. On the other hand,  Apple managed to corner 200 million units, representing a slight drop in shipment.</p>

<p>Xiaomi emerged as the fourth largest phone maker in 2019 with shipments estimated at 125 million. The figure is slightly higher than the company&#8217;s feat in 2018. Oppo rounded out the list of the top five manufacturers.</p>
<p>Despite individual gains, all three reports reveal that the industry experienced a slump with fewer phones sold in 2019 than in 2018. Counterpoint Research notes that this is the first time the smartphone market has ever declined for two years in a row. With the US’s trade wars still ongoing, and China’s coronavirus scare having potential implications for supply chains, 2020 could be another challenging year.</p>

<p>Out of all the units sold, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-watch-series-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple Watch</a> accounted for 6.8 million units making it the most popular smartwatch. In comparison to Q3 of 2018, when Apple sold 4.5 million, the sales of its smartwatches in Q3 of the current year grew an astounding 51 percent. Correspondingly, the Apple Watch lineup single-handedly accounts for almost half of the market share.</p>
<p>Other leading manufacturers in this segment include <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/fitbit" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fitbit</a>. The South Korean Electronics giant shipped 1.9 million smartwatches worldwide in Q3 of 2019, almost doubling from 1.1 million a year ago. Speaking of its market share, it jumped from 11 percent last year to 13 percent in the current year, making it the second-largest manufacturer of smartwatches. One of the most selling models from the company is the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-watch-active-2-aluminum/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Galaxy Watch Active 2</a> which is expected to boost sales even further in the forthcoming festive season.</p>

<p>Closely followed by Samsung is Fitbit which sold 1.6 million smartwatches worldwide in Q3 of 2019, growing slightly from 1.5 million a year ago. Despite the growth in sales, it&#8217;s market share fell to 11 percent from 15 percent in the third quarter of the preceding year. &#8220;Fitbit continues to underperform in the smartwatch industry average, however, its recent takeover by Google could provide it with some relief and increased market share,&#8221; said Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics.</p>
<p>Some readers might be surprised as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> seems out of sight in this report, however, it is hidden in the other segment. Noteworthy, it is one of the largest manufacturers of smart bands which happens to be a smart wearable and not a smartwatch in particular. Having said that, the company has recently launched its first smartwatch, dubbed the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-watch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mi Watch</a>, it starts at Yuan 1299 and is packed with features. This device ticks almost every box that consumers in the budget and mid-range segment look for, therefore, Xiaomi is assumed to make a significant mark in smartwatch sales report in the coming quarters.</p>

<p>There is no argument that the entire tech industry is heading into the ear of 5G and soon, we may start seeing affordable 5G phones. Presently, 5G phones account for just 1% of the market but the research firm predicts that will rise to 10% by 2020 as more consumers migrate to 5G phones.</p>

<p>According to a statement by Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, &#8220;All major smartphone vendors including <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> are developing 5G handsets and will many more devices will launch in 2020.&#8221; Presently, Samsung is the market leader in 5G smartphones with strong sales in the U.S. and its home country of South Korea, where 1 million people signed up for service in the first 70 days of the rollout. But SA thinks China will be a key growth market for 5G smartphone sales as the country prioritizes rapid development of the high-speed 5G mobile networks. &#8220;The ability of the industry to deliver lower-cost 5G smartphones will be critical to allow China to reach this goal next year,&#8221; Ken Hyers, director of emerging device strategies at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.</p>

However, the Korean tech giant remains unassailable at the top of the charts, a recent research report of the global smartphone industry for Q2 2019 by Strategy Analytics and Counterpoint show.</p>
<p>Both reports confirm that the smartphone shipment fell year-over-year. The decline didn&#8217;t affect Samsung and Huawei as they saw a modest increase in shipments and market share during the period.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-1.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-267532" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="500" height="568" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-1.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-1-264x300.jpg 264w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-1-370x420.jpg 370w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></a></p>
<p>Strategy Analytics data shows that the global shipments fell 2.6% while Samsung recorded 1.9% increase, Huawei gained 1.7% and Apple lost 0.7% year-over-year. Talking of figures, Samsung sold 76.3 million smartphone units in Q2 2019 while 58.7 million devices were shipped by Huawei. Apple managed to ship 38 million iPhones.</p>
<p>Samsung remains the top smartphone manufacturer, Huawei and Apple follow<br />
Xiaomi and Oppo follow the top three OEMs with 9.4% and 8.7% market shares. Both companies also saw a slight increase in their market share. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-267533" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2.jpg?x10805" alt="sAMSUNG" width="727" height="510" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2.jpg 727w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2-300x210.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2-696x488.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/samsung-2-599x420.jpg 599w" sizes="(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px" /></a></p>
<p>Counterpoint&#8217;s research gives roughly the same data with a bit more detail for the rest of the brands in the top 10. Samsung&#8217;s market share is around the 20% mark, Huawei nearly 16% and Apple with a little over 10% share. All three OEMs have a slightly lower market share according to Counterpoint&#8217;s research. And on the contrary to Strategy Analytics&#8217; report, global shipments are down just 1.2% as opposed to 2.6%.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> <a title="Xiaomi officially launches the portable MIJIA Juicer for crowdfunding" href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/31/xiaomi-officially-launches-the-portable-mijia-juicer-for-crowdfunding/" rel="bookmark">Xiaomi officially launches the portable MIJIA Juicer for crowdfunding</a></strong></p>
<p>Counterpoint&#8217;s data also shows that HMD Global Nokia&#8217;s shipment grew by 20% in Q2 2019 YoY. The company clinches the 9th place in the global rankings which is a monumental achievement for a relatively new company. Lenovo and Vivo also record a modest increase in sales while LG struggles to keep it afloat. Realme&#8217;s growth is 848%, which is normal given that the company&#8217;s first smartphone was released in Q2 2019 last year.</p>

The report which comes from Strategic Analytics also reveals a decline in shipments compared to last quarter.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-148943" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-8-and-iPhone-8-Plus-featured-2.jpg?x10805" alt="iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus featured 2" width="772" height="496" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-8-and-iPhone-8-Plus-featured-2.jpg 772w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-8-and-iPhone-8-Plus-featured-2-300x193.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/iPhone-8-and-iPhone-8-Plus-featured-2-768x493.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px" /></p>
<p>Apple may have reclaimed the number one spot but it only shipped 12 million smartphones in Q3 2017, compared to 13 million in Q3 2016. However, that figure still gave it 30% of the market share. Reasons provided for the dip include the lukewarm reception of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/iphone-8/">iPhone 8</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-8-plus/">iPhone 8 Plus</a>, in addition to them going on sale in September, and plenty of customers who rather waited for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-x/">iPhone X</a>. Sadly, the iPhone X didn&#8217;t make the cut as it went on sale this quarter (Q4).</p>
<figure id="attachment_157311" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-157311" style="width: 418px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-157311" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-2017-US-vendors.png?x10805" alt="Strategy Analytics Q3 2017 US Vendors" width="418" height="384" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-2017-US-vendors.png 418w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-2017-US-vendors-300x276.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-157311" class="wp-caption-text">Strategy Analytics Q3 2017 US vendors</figcaption></figure>
<p>Samsung is second on the list with 9.9 million shipments, 200,000 more than what it recorded in Q3 2016. The bulk of its shipment is said to be shared between the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8/">Galaxy S8</a> in the high-end category and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-a5-2017/">Galaxy A5</a> in the mid-range category.</p>
<p>LG clinches the third spot with a 17.2% market share and 6.8 million shipments. According to Linda Sui, a director at Strategic Analytics, she said “&#8230;LG has expanded its retail presence at major operators this year, like Sprint and AT&amp;T, and this is helping LG to stay one step ahead of ambitious new rivals such as ZTE.”.</p>
<p>ZTE is 4th on the list with 4.6 million units; 1 million units more than the same period in 2016. The Chinese manufacturer&#8217;s success is attributed to its success in the prepaid segment, most especially its partnership with Tracfone. ZTE has also been able to capture market share formerly owned by TCL(Alcatel) and Blu.</p>

<p>Closing the top 5 is Motorola. This is its first time of entering the top 5 since 2015. The Lenovo-owned company was able to nearly double its shipments from last year thanks to its expanded distribution with America&#8217;s top carriers and the success of phones like the Moto Z2 Play.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-91074" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/huawei-h1.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="500" height="375" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/huawei-h1.jpg 500w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/huawei-h1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/huawei-h1-160x120.jpg 160w" sizes="(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Although Huawei secured 2.4% of the total $9.4 billion the industry recorded, it is still a far cry from the top earner, Apple. The iPhone maker accounted for a whooping 91% of the profits making it the most profitable phone manufacturer for Q3 2016. We are sure investors in the Cupertino-based company are really happy about the figures.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-108095" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-Profits-Report.png?x10805" alt="strategy-analytics-q3-profits-report" width="1071" height="232" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-Profits-Report.png 1071w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-Profits-Report-300x65.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-Profits-Report-768x166.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Strategy-Analytics-Q3-Profits-Report-1024x222.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1071px) 100vw, 1071px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Apple was able to record such high profits due to their strategy of minimizing production costs and maximizing pricing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify">Huawei&#8217;s $200 million pales in comparison to Apple&#8217;s $8.5 billion but they have done well to emerge at the top of android manufacturers. Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, Neil Mawston, says Huawei was able to achieve this because of their efficient supply chain, sleek products, and effective marketing.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><span style="color: #ff0000">READ MORE:</span> <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/11/21/huawei-closes-appleless-than-gap-in-q3-2016-market-share/">Huawei Closes in on Apple with Less Than 3% Gap in Q3 2016 Market Share</a><span id="more-108081"></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify">The list also has Chinese manufacturers, OPPO and Vivo claiming third and fourth spots. Each of them grabbing 2.2% of the total profits. This is a surprise as even though they are the second and third best selling manufacturers in China, we weren&#8217;t expecting them to dominate worldwide. But seeing that other global manufacturers like LG and HTC are having a bad year, and Samsung is still dealing with the loss caused by the Note 7, we guess it is understandable.</p>
