Nio Files Trademark Application for In-House Chips, Expanding Its Product Portfolio

Nio’s CEO, William Li, announced at the Innovation Technology Day last month that the company’s first self-developed chip will go into mass production in October. Now, according to the National Intellectual Property Administration’s Trademark Office website, NIO Automobile Technology filed a registration application for the “NIO Yang Jian” on September 21, 2023.

At first glance, Yang Jian appears to be just a chip that can process large amounts of LiDAR data in real time. However, the company has incorporated multiple subcategories into this trademark, such as computer software, chatbot software for simulated conversations, CPUs, AI-based interactive software, smart glasses for data processing, operating system programs, interactive computer systems, and more.

Based on this, we can say that Nio’s plans are much more extensive. In fact, this approach is a strategy employed by many tech giants, including Apple. Even though today’s world is very global and sourcing some components from abroad might seem cheaper, it can lead to significant disadvantages during challenging times.

Therefore, companies are opting to reduce their dependency on external sources in various areas, especially in chip manufacturing. It’s possible to say that Nio is also taking similar steps and is on its way to becoming a global technology giant.

In a surprising statistic, Apple has launched 215 trademark opposition applications in recent years. This number overtakes the combined total of tech giants Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta (formerly Facebook), which stands at 136 cases. Of the trademark oppositions initiated by Apple, 17% resulted in withdrawals from the opposing parties, while over half received no reaction to Apple’s legal actions.

The tech company’s fruit-inspired trademarking efforts haven’t been without controversy. A memorable case involved Apple’s opposition against American artist Frankie Pineapple due to her stage name’s English suffix, “apple.” This incident underscores Apple’s vigilant stance on anything remotely infringing on its brand name.

Meizu is a known smartphone brand in the Chinese market and was acquired by Geely back in 2022. But it seems that the company is planning on expanding to another market, which is automobile, that its parent company already specializes in.

Apparently, the Chinese smartphone maker has recently applied for the registration of two trademarks for “Wujie Automobile”. Both of these trademarks will be internationally classifies as a means of transportation. In other words, it is clearly related to an upcoming automobile. This trademark application has caused discussions about Meizu’s planning on entering car manufacturing. This is similar to how a Geely smartphone was rumored following the company’s acquiring Meizu.

The smartphone brand has also been hiring people into its automobile arm on a large scale as well. Its official website now also includes its recruitment drive for positions related to automobile. This includes vehicle system product managers, smart console project managers, and other technical positions. All of these recruitment offers are based in Wuhan, which is in China’s Hubei Province. Apart from this, the company is also hiring automobile business related positions as well, like trainers, marketers, and sales planning and promoters.

Meizu has officially confirmed that it is hiring talents in the automobile industry in China. Furthermore, it also added that it is working on building 1,000 stores over the course of the next three years that will showcase its smartphones and automobiles. These vehicles will also be equipped with the FlymeAuto car system.

The Pokémon Company is filing a lawsuit against a company called the Pokémon Pty Ltd. The company has filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Australia. The company is suing the company over an NFT based game that is using its trademark.

The NFT based title is based on the massively popular fictional world of the same name. The Australian based firm is facing the legal dispute since it is completely unrelated to the actual Pokémon Company. For those unaware, Kotiota Studios has advertised that it is gearing up to launch an NFT game that is called the PokéWorld, which features the iconic Pocket Monsters from the Japanese animated series that is worth billions.

Pokémon Pty Ltd has previously claimed that it has worked with the Pokémon Company in the past on certain titles like the Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet, Pokémon Home, and the unreleased Pokémon Sleep as well. The PokéWorld website is still online, but the original company is asking the court to intervene and prevent the Australian company from infringing on its trademarks that can be found on its websites and social media. In other words, basically blocking the game before its launch.

As per a new report, the company first realized the fraud when Kotiota Studios reached out to several media websites to boost the reach of the yet to be released title. The lawsuit was filed earlier this month and the first hearing was held on December 21. Here, the legal counsel of the original company showed up while there was no one from the Kotiota Studios. Thus, the Pokémon Company is planning on taking additional legal actions.

Samsung has already announced its ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel camera sensor which is expected to debut with the Moto X30 Pro smartphone in a few days. The South Korean giant has another 200-megapixel camera in the form of ISOCELL HP3.

Now, a new report from GalaxyClub reveals a trademark filing from Samsung for “Hexa²Pixel” hints that the company might be working on a 450-megapixel camera sensor.

The Samsung ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel camera sensor and the ISOCELL HP3 sensors use “Tetra²pixel RGB Bayer Pattern,” which uses 16:1 Pixel binning (4 squared equals 16). Thus, the trademark for “Hexa²Pixel” would indicate Samsung working on a camera sensor with a pixel binning ratio of 36:1 (6 squared equals 36).

The camera sensors from Samsung have post-binning images in the range of 12-megapixel to 12.5-megapixel, and based on that, it can be deduced that the South Korean giant is working on a new camera sensor of somewhere between 432-megapixel to 450-megapixel.

Although the company has filed for a trademark which appears to be for a 450-megapixel camera sensor, it won’t be introduced anytime soon. The camera sensor is likely to be in the early stages of development and might take several months to make it to the market.

Samsung has plans to launch camera sensors with as high as 600-megapixel resolution with 1/0.57” optical format. So, this Hexa²pixel sensor is just the halfway point of what is planned to come from the South Korean giant in the next few years.

Recently, major smartphone brands like Samsung and Apple had launched their smart tags in the market. And now, it appears that Huawei is also working on its own Bluetooth trackers as well to compete with its rivals.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the Chinese tech giant has trademarked a new “S-Tag” moniker. This trademark was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The description of the trademark is quite and doesn’t offer any clear indication as to what the product actually is, but the name more or less confirms that it is a Bluetooth smart tracker.

For those unaware, a smart tag is basically a small electronic products that users can attach/keep with other objects, like a wallet, backpack, and more, to help find them in case they are lost. These smart tag Bluetooth trackers usually use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra wideband (UWB) technology to precisely pin point the tagged object’s location.

Previously, we had also reported on other Chinese brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus working on their own iterations of the Bluetooth tracking device. So, it arrives as no surprise that Huawei might also launch its own smart tag as well. Unfortunately, finer details regarding this product is also unknown at the moment and the available information is quite vague, but we can expect to hear more about this in arriving weeks. A new lawsuit has been filed against Huawei. Sony is aiming on fighting the company over one of its trademarks related to its smartwatch. The trademark in question is for the Watch GT.

For those unaware, the Chinese smartphone maker launches its flagship smartwatch series under the “Watch GT” branding. According to LetsGoDigital, the company had applied trademark for the words “GT 3” and “GT 5” at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office), which is where the dispute between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Huawei began. During a trademark application process any third party is allowed to file an objection. So back in 2016, the Japanese tech giant had filed an appeal against Huawei’s trademark.

In 2019, the company had filed another petition against Huawei’s trademarks as well, but, by the time of the second dispute, the Watch GT and GT 2 had already been launched in the global market. Now, Sony aims to continue this fight by filing a lawsuit against Huawei in the European Union back in August 2021. As of right now, the legal procedures are still underway and the results cannot be predicted this early on.

The reason for the company’s objection to the “GT” branding is related to its popular Gran Turismo IP. This is a Japanese series of racing simulation video games that is developed by Polyphony Digital for the PlayStation console, which is owned by Sony. In other words, it aims to gain exclusive rights to the “GT” trademark for its Gran Turismo.

Samsung had recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, which were its latest foldable smartphones. With the arrival of the new foldable phones, it seemed that the company is moving away from its popular Galaxy Note series of high end smartphones. But a new trademark and patent hints that the Note lineup will be seeing a major update in terms of design.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the South Korean tech giant’s display unit had filed a trademark for the name ‘Flex Note’ and also a design patent with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). The patent describes a smartphone with a large display that can fold outward and wrap around the device. In its compact form, the device would resemble a regular smartphone from the front, with its large display folding and wrapping around to the back from the right side. Looking at the compact form from the back, the wrap around display covers around half of the rear panel.

Users can unfold this display, which would make the total screen size of the smartphone larger. This would make it resemble a tablet from the front. Another unique aspect about its design is the inclusion of a recess for the S Pen stylus. In other words, the device will arrive with S Pen support and a special magnetic housing as well. Notably, the device is equal in terms of thickness when in its compact form. However, when the display is unfolded, there is a noticeable difference between one half of the rear panel and the other side which houses the folding wrap around display.

Although, this difference in thickness also serves a purpose as the magnetic housing for the S Pen is in the region behind the folding screen. So when the display folds the S Pen can be housed securely and can be removed when needed in its tablet form. Another interesting aspect is that the rear camera module is not detailed in the patent sketches, but the company does include dual cameras underneath the display that is on the top right corner, which makes it capable of taking both selfies in tablet form and serve as a primary sensor in its compact form. At the moment, it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a product or covering all bases. So stay tuned for more updates.

The trademark was spotted by LetsGoDigital who found that it was filed under category Class 9. Its description stated that it is a “computer keyboard; tablet; keyboard cover; projection keyboard; mobile phone keyboard; central processing unit (CPU).” From this, we can somewhat speculate that it is form of keyboard and tablets with the glide suggesting a possible sliding out mechanism for a keyboard. On the other hand, the most notable aspect of the description was the word ‘projection keyboard.’

This is where the trademark gets interesting as it suggests that the Chinese tech giant might be working on a virtual keyboard that can be projected through laser beams. In other words, users will have a full keyboard at their disposal without having the need to carry a physical one, which can be especially useful when traveling light. Unfortunately, finer details regarding this trademark is currently unknown and we can only make assumptions regarding its purpose. Huawei, the China-based technology giant, has been struggling to maintain its presence in the smartphone market but the company has several other product categories and seems to have shifted its focus to other products.

The company has launched several wearable devices so far and now the China-based giant is gearing up to launch a new smartwatch. Huawei hasn’t actually confirmed this but a new trademark from the brand indicates this.

It is believed that the upcoming smartwatch, which is reportedly named Huawei Watch D, will come with many health and fitness-related features, including a heart rate monitor, blood pressure monitor, and body fat monitor.

As of now, there’s no information about what the “D” in the device’s name indicates. The company has previously launched a smartwatch named Watch GT where the GT stands for “Gran Turismo.” It may be that Huawei is rebranding its devices and thus, opted for a simpler name for the upcoming product.

Whatever be the case behind the naming, we should get to know more about it in the coming weeks. What’s interesting is that this new smartwatch will be the first one from the company to come with support for blood pressure monitoring.

Huawei is reportedly testing this new smartwatch and a previously leaked image of the same indicates that it looks similar to the Watch Fit. Xiaomi has recently applied for a new graphic trademark for what appears to be a Dinosaur. This trademark could be the new mascot for the upcoming Redmi K50 series of smartphones.

For those unaware, the company had previously unveiled the Redmi K20 series, which had a mascot dubbed the “Big Devil” dinosaur. Now, it appears that the company might be bringing back the dinosaur mascot again for the upcoming K50 lineup as well. According to a MyDrivers report, the Chinese tech giant has just applied for a new graphic trademark, which is for a small dinosaur. The trademark has an international classification and is expected to be used for smartphones and related accessories as well, like smartphones cases and more.

Notably, the new little dinosaur logo that the company has trademarked is different from the two mascots that it has used for the Redmi K series of smartphones in the past. While the K20 and K30 lineup arrived with a dinosaur and dragon mascot respectively, the K40 series did not follow this tradition. But it might be revived for the K50’s launch and could even serve as the exclusive logo for the new lineup.

At the moment, the trademark is still waiting for registration. Unfortunately, apart from the name of this product, we have no real information to go on as of right now since it is just an application (spotted by ITHome). Although, we can make certain speculations regarding the nature or function of this device.

The name ‘Magic Control’ is quite similar to a previously launched gadget from the Chinese tech giant dubbed Mi Magic Controller. This was practically a cube that will function as a standard remote controller. It offered users various forms of controls and actions and worked with a number of Xiaomi products including lamps, TV sets, Air Purifier, along with smart TVs and other smart products as well.

The most notable aspect about this product was that certain actions were input through simply shaking the cube, moving it, and even rotating it 90 degrees or 180 degrees, or by making a double tap on it. So, the Magic Control might be similar to this product. However, it might also arrive with additional features like gesture support or even air gestures as well. But we have no way of knowing for sure.

For those unaware, the MagSafe was first introduced in iPhones with the iPhone 12 series last year. This is a charging technology that essentially attaches to the back of the device to charge the iPhone through magnets that are housed under the rear panel of the handset. This trademark application was filed at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and was first spotted by tipster Mukul Sharma, who revealed the name of this upcoming technology.

Looking at the description of this trademark, it is clear that Realme is working on a new charging solution. However, the finer details regarding this charging technology are still unknown, which appears to be similar to the Apple MagSafe solution. As of right now, the company has yet to make any official announcement regarding this technology. So, we have no way of knowing if the vendor is actually working on such a moment or just covering all bases.

A new report has revealed that Oppo might just be working on a new finance based product. A recent trademark filing has revealed the name “OPPO Card”, which might be similar to the Apple Card that was launched back in 2019.

For those unaware, the Apple Card launched back in 2019 and saw great success. It was an attempt from the iPhone maker to “revolutionize” the credit card market and now, it seems that the Chinese tech giant might aim to follow suit. As per a recent filing on a Chinese Trademark portal, the brand has filed for the OPPO Card under International classification – 9, which has an application number 57108414.

The news arrives from a DroidMaze report (Via AndroidHeadlines), which found that the trademark filing has yet to be approved as of right now. Furthermore, the finer details regarding this card are also unknown at the moment. Although Apple Card arriving with certain security features and the added benefit of having no fees, it might also imply that Oppo could follow a similar path with its own card. Meaning, we could see its own implementation of security and other interesting features.

Notably, another Chinese company had also launched its own version of the Apple Card. Back in 2020, the Huawei Card was unveiled, meanwhile, Google is also rumored to be working on a similar product. Oppo has just applied for a new trademark registration for “OCAR”. This application recently surfaced and arrives amid rumors of the company planning on building its own cars.

While the trademark application itself doesn’t reveal any information or offer any finer details, we had previously reported on the company apparently aiming at building and launching its own cars in the future.

This would have the company’s CEO and Founder, Tony Chen, apparently leading the project. The company has also been rumored to be investigating resources, hiring talents from within the industry, and has overall been testing the viability of the project. So, this registration for the OCAR trademark might be in some manner related to the brand’s automobile related project.

Keep in mind, this is just speculation as of right now so take it with a pinch of salt. It is also unknown if the company is actually planning on building its own cars or just offer self driving related technologies and other such products. A new trademark application has just surfaced that has Huawei register the name “Luban.” The company applied for the trademark application back on 21st May 2021 and is classified under 9 scientific instruments in the international classification.

According to an ITHome report, the Chinese tech giant had previously successfully registered the “Huawei Luban” trademark back in 19th December 2020. For those unaware, Luban is associated with a historical figure Lu Ban who has been called the originator of Chinese architecture and is even known as an engineer, inventor, and carpenter as well. In other words, the trademark application holds a symbolic reference to important Chinese culture.

Unfortunately, it is unknown in which product line the Luban trademark will be used. Earlier this year, the company had launched the Nova 8 Pro King of Glory Edition. This special variant of the device features an interesting design and a different UI theme. The rear of the smartphone sports a purple color scheme and is engraved with the Luban character on top. Apart from the design, the internal of the device were still the same as the base variant.

So, we could expect the brand to launch a special variant of an existing model, but the trademark implies that Huawei could be working on a standalore lineup that would feature a distinct design. Samsung is already the leading smartphone brand when it comes to foldable smartphones and now the South Korean giant is working on a different form factor to launch a device with a rollable display.

Ahead of the SID 2021, Samsung Display has showcased OLED screens for S-Foldable, Slidable, and Rollable devices. However, the displays were revealed by Samsung Display and not the Electronics unit.

Now, Samsung Electronics has filed a trademark at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for the name Samsung Galaxy Z Roll, reports LetsGoDigital. As the name itself indicates, this is for the company’s first rollable smartphone.

The South Korean giant has been clubbing untraditional form factors under its Galaxy Z series and it continues to do the same with the rollable display. It continues the trend for Samsung of simple names for the devices such as Galaxy Z Fold for the foldable smartphone and Galaxy Z Flip for the clamshell-like flip phone.

Currently, not much is known about the upcoming Galaxy Z Roll rollable smartphone from Samsung. However, we could hear more about the device in the month of August, when the company is expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphones.

LG was also working on a rollable smartphone named LG Rollable which the company had showcased last year. However, the device has been discontinued given that the LG is taking an exit from the smartphone business.

OPPO has also showcased a smartphone with a rollable display named OPPO X 2021 but it was unveiled as a Concept Smartphone. It’s unlikely that OPPO plans to launch the smartphone commercially anytime soon. Given how things are going, it seems likely that Samsung will be the first company to commercially launch a rollable display phone.

Roborock has recently applied for a new trademark. The application is for a “Rock Smart Car,” which is for an international classifaction in the means of transportation. This trademark is still under the status of “application for registration” and has yet to be granted.

Looking at the trademark application title, it is clear that the company is working on smart car and related technologies. Unfortunately, it is unknown what technoogy the company is actually working on, but it could be to provide hardware or software related solutions to automobile manufacturers that are building smart cars. In other words, it could be a self driving based technology or simple connected devices like smart screens that are housed in the vehicle.

Furthermore, this also marks another Chinese brand entering the smart car market. In recent times, there have been various rumors and reports surfacing regarding Chinese vendors branching into the automobie industry. This included the likes of Xiaomi, Huawei and others as well. Notably, the CEO and Founder of Roborock also has experience within the industry as he established an independent car company, called Stone Motors, which has even worked with automobile giant, Mercedes-Benz.

Although, an ITHome report stated that Stone Technology has stated that the new project that has been trademarked will not be directly reated to the company. On the other hand, Roborock has mainly been known for its offerings for smart home appliances, with vacuum robots being its most popular products in the market within the Xiaomi Ecological chain. Earlier this month, the State Intellectual Property Office in China announced that the litigation request from Xiaomi was rejected by the Beijing Intellectual Property Court. The company had applied for a “MIX” trademark that was declined due to clashes with an existing trademark from a different company.

According to a MyDrivers report, the Chinese tech giant had filed a trademark application for “MIX” but this was rejected. The disputed trademark is for No. 29673851 for “MIX” that is designated to gadgets like ‘computers; pedometers; mobile phones; sensors, etc.’ Now, the judgement states that the trademark for that includes “MIX” is disputed as it is already related to an existing trademark that is registered by another smartphone brand, Meizu, and is similar to its Meizu MIX trademark.

Furthermore, the court also pointed out that it is also in use by other companies as well. Notably, one of the primary reasons for the rejection of the litigation request was due to the nature of the products that the term “MIX” was used on, since both Meizu and Xiaomi use it on similar products. The latter had first introduced its Mi MIX smartphone back in October 2016, on the other hand, the Meizu MIX had been unveiled two months prior. Although, unlike Xiaomi, Meizu had launched a smart watch instead of a handset.

Samsung is expected to launch new foldable smartphones this year. But prior to any official announcement, the company has applied for a trademark for S Foldable displays, which might be the screen panels used in these upcoming flexible devices. 

According to a LetsGoDigital report, the South Korean tech giant filed for a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) for the name ‘S Foldable.’ The news arrives amid other rumors of upcoming launches for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. While these devices are likely to arrive sometime in the future with designs similar to the predecessor, the company is apparently also working on a new extra large foldable tablet device as well.

One of the unique aspect about the S Foldable display is likely its Z shared hinge design, which implies that the foldable smartphone will feature two hinge mechanism for a single display. Meaning, the handset would fold twice. The report also adds that this technology might also be seen with the Galaxy Z Fold Tab that could release later this year, but is more likely to be unveiled sometime in 2022. The ‘S’ in the trademark name is likely a hint towards the dual folding design that showcases its S shaped fold.

In the past, we had reported on the company patenting devices that have the S or Z shaped folding design. So, this might be the company’s move to trademark the design before the launch of a device that ships with it. Earlier this week, Chanel lost its trademark fight against Huawei Technologies in a top European court. The news arrives after the court stated that both firms logos do not share any similarity to each other.

According to an SCMP report, the French luxury brand lost its trademark battle against the Chinese tech giant regarding the logo design. Notably, this also highlights the sensitive nature of luxury brands guarding their logos to preserve the luxury symbols that showcases their “style and exclusivity” to millions of people across the globe. The claim from Chanel first arrived back in 2017, when Huawei sought approval from the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to register its computer hardware trademark which featured two vertical interlocking semicircles.

This branding led to Chanel alleging that this design is similar to its registered French logo of two horizontal interlocking semicircles that are used on the brand’s cosmetics, perfumes, clothing, and other such products. In 2019, the trademark office had dismissed the company’s claims saying that there was no similarity and there would be no confusion between both brands in the eyes of the consumers.

However, Chanel then took the challenge to the Luxembourg based General Court. Here, the claim was dismissed again in a ruling earlier this week. As per the tribunal of judges,”The figurative marks at issue are not similar. The marks must be compared as applied for and registered, without altering their orientation.” The tribunal added that there were visual differences between both logos “In particular, Chanel’s marks have more rounded curves, thicker lines and a horizontal orientation, whereas the orientation of the Huawei mark is vertical. Consequently, the General Court concludes that the marks are different.”

OnePlus is apparently working on bringing its own digital payment service to India. The company has recently trademarked OnePlus Pay, which will likely rival other online wallet services like Google Pay and PayTM in the region.

The trademark registration was found by Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) and he shared the news on Twitter. As per the tweet, the Chinese tech giant is planning on soon launching it is in house payment platform in the country, although, it is still unknown when exactly the service will be available. The company had first announced that it was working on a payment service back in 2019 in China. This service works with the pre loaded wallet app, and users would have to set the OnePlus Pay as the default NFC based app.

To use the NFC based system, users can double press the power button to quickly access the digital wallet, which can be linked to the users’ debit cards. In India, the company is likely aiming to partner with Indian banks or international payment gateways like Mastercard or Visa that are widely popular in the region. Similarly, it might also choose to bring support for RuPay credit and debit cards as well for its Indian customers.

OnePlus Pay would also have the company join the list of smartphone manufacturers that have announced their own mobile payment services. Furthermore, the company would also face competition from third party payment apps like Google Pay and PayTM that are based around the UPI system in India. Earlier today (18th February 2021), a new trademark application from Xiaomi had surfaced online. This new applications was for the company’s FlipBuds and FlipBuds Pro, which are likely an upcoming hearables product.

According to an ITHome report, the trademark application from the Chinese tech giant was found in the Qicha app, which carried the registration for FlipBuds and FlipBuds Pro. This application arrived with international classification that included 9 types of scientific instruments, 7 types of mechanical equipment, 42 types of design research. These are likely the components and internal hardware that will be found in the company’s upcoming audio product.

At the moment, Xiaomi has launched various hearables products, with many of the offerings being wireless and connect via Bluetooth. Unfortunately, apart from the trademark application for the name of the product, no other finer details are available regarding the upcoming headphones. Although, we can make a few educated guesses. Looking at its name, the FlipBuds are also likely to be a truly wireless earbuds, which have recently grown in popularity.

The ‘Buds’ in the name is suggestive of its individual earpieces, which will arrive in two variants. Furthermore, the higher end Pro variant could arrive with features like active noise cancellation that might not be available in the base model. Do note that the Nova lineup isn’t new for the company as it has already launched several smartphones under it but it’s certainly new for the Chinese giant to launch smartwatches under this Nova branding.

It is being reported that the Huawei Nova Watch series will be focusing on fashion as its main selling point and will be targeted towards youngsters. Some indicate that the reason behind the new Nova smartwatch lineup could be the independence of its sub-brand Honor, stripping Huawei off of several devices from its portfolio.

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has recently applied for a new trademark for “TikTok Payment.” The international classification covers 36 categories of “Financial Property Management,” which is currently waiting for approval.

Notably, this news arrives after the company indirectly won a payment license back in September 2020, when it bought UIPay to boost its own e-payment capabilities in China. At the time, the company stated that the acquisition will help in improving its user experience through other payment options, whilst also serving users of ByteDance’s other products and services as well.

While the trademark application doesn’t reveal the potential use-case of this new branding, the company has reportedly confirmed that it for its punch-hole cutout on the displays that houses the front-facing camera sensor.

The Huawei Mate lineup is well-known for the high-end flagship smartphones but the company is now looking to expand the lineup to include more products. It is reportedly planning to launch wireless earphones in the form of MatePods or MateBuds and a docking station named MateStation. It could also launch a smartwatch under the Mate branding. IGB Electronica, a Brazilian consumer electronics company has been in a trademark battle for the name “iPhone” for years. Now, the Brazilian Supreme Court is set to determine is Apple can use the iPhone trademark in Brazil.

There has been a continuous back and forth court battle related to the use of the iPhone trademark in Brazil. Both the companies — Apple and IGB Electronica were given rights to use the name in the country but both of them keeps attempting to gain exclusive rights.

In 2018, the court upheld a 2013 ruling that provided permission to both the brands to use the iPhone trademark. Earlier this year, Justice Dias Toffoli accepted a request to analyze the case and is now set to determine the trademark’s usage.

IGB Electronica, an electronics company, which is doing business as Gradiente, registered the ‌iPhone‌ trademark in Brazil in 2000. The company produced a line of IPHONE branded Android smartphones in 2012 and it even had exclusive rights to the trademark.

Apple claims that it was inappropriate for the National Institute of Industrial Property to grant the trademark to Gradiente in 2008 even though it was filed in 2000 because, at that point, the ‌iPhone‌ existed.

While the Brazilian Supreme Court has taken up the case, it is not yet clear when it will hear the case and come to a decision. Given that IGB has been struggling for years, it may not be surprising that it could end up taking payout from Apple.

Earlier today (10th July 2020), a Weibo user (@长安数码君) found a new trademark application from Huawei. The trademark was for a new logo design for its Kirin chips, with the new logo having a Dragon.

For those unaware, Huawei’s HiSilicon designs its proprietary Kirin mobile chipsets. The blogger on the popular Chinese microblogging website found the trademark which had been applied for in June 2020. Looking at the images shared on the Weibo post, a smiling Dragon can be seen in the logo. The dragon resembles the ones depicted in traditional Chinese lores, with the inclusion of legs and wings.

This new design comes as a breath of fresh air since the original logo is just a plain red ribbon. Notably, the new dragon design carries the current ribbon logo on its chest to signify its roots. Unfortunately, we may never see this new logo design being unveiled or even announced. Trademark applications don’t always see the light of day, so we will have to wait for an official announcement.

Huawei Technologies have apparently filed for a large number of trademark applications. These new trademarks are all related to its proprietary HarmonyOS (also known as HongMeng OS in China).

The list of trademark applications includes HarmonyOS, HarmonyOS Connected, HarmonyOS Linked, and more. This news arrives after rumors were surfacing of Huawei smartwatches that will soon be launched along with the company’s own operating system. For those unaware, HarmonyOS is a proprietary operating system that the Chinese tech giant has been working on ever since it lost Google support on Android.

While it had been rumored to launch on multiple occasions it has yet to make a commercial appearance. Furthermore, a new recent trademark application also revealed that a Huawei Mate Watch is also in the works and will launch alongside the flagship Mate 40 series. In response to the trademark application surfacing, Huawei reached out to one Chinese reporting agency to verify the news. The company stated that the application for HarmonyOS is just a part of the normal business process.

LeEco, the Chinese company which dared to take on the likes of Netflix and Tesla and called Apple as “outdated” at the same time, was making quite a progress. But suddenly, the world of LeEco, earlier known as LeTV, crumbled as the company faced a number of setbacks. It was growing too fast without a solid financial foundation.

The company is now facing a number of lawsuits in its home country from various vendors, although the same has been going on for years now. In the latest development, Jingdong Judicial Auction listed 1,354 patents held by LeTV Information Technology (Beijing) Co. for judicial auction.

The listing had a starting price of 136,000 yuan (approximately $19,240) and the current bid for the trademarks has reached 113 million yuan. It began the bidding process on 29th June at 10:00 AM local time and the process was closed today, i.e. on 30th June at 10:00 AM local time.

The process seems to have attracted more than 90,000 people but only 105 signed up for the bidding. This first auction of the company’s assets and IP includes trademarks like “LeTV TV” and “LeTV Super TV” among others.

The auction process for the trademarks was based on the increased-price method where a reserved price is set and then each bid increases the price by at least 500 yuan (~$71). The competition among the bidders is fierce given that most bids were only a minute apart and the bid has been increased by 800 times compared to the reserved price.

Earlier this month, the auction of around 22.1 million shares of LeEco held by Jia Yueting, the company’s founder, took place on 13th June and 14th June. Despite over 14,000 people interested, none of them participated in the bidding process.

The auction price of the share was decided based on the average closing price of 20 trading days before the trading was suspended. With the price of 2.51 yuan (~$0.36) per share, the total comes down to 55.47 million yuan.

It’s noteworthy that the auction price almost doubles the price of the share from the 1.69 yuan per share cost on the last trading day before LeTV’s suspension. The company entered the delisting consolidation period on 5th June and thus, the LETV stock trading was suspended in China. By the end of 12th June, the company’s share price fell below 0.9 yuan (~$0.13) per share, bringing down the market value to 3.59 billion yuan.

Oppo has recently applied for a new trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). It is for an upcoming Reno series smartphones and may be called the Reno Glow.

The Reno series from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is a popular lineup of handsets. These range from affordable to even mid range and certain flagship products. Unfortunately, it is still unclear which category the Reno Glow will fall into, even after looking at the patent application. However, the name does suggest an interesting feature that may arrive with the device.

The Reno Glow could be related to a new camera system with better voice controls, although that is just speculation at this point. Notably, Oppi did release a “Glow in the Dark” version of the Oppo Reno 2 last year, to advertise its new Ultra Night camera function. The “Glow” could also be in reference to a better display since flagships have now been shifting towards a higher refresh rate panel on QHD displays with more colors and even higher maximum brightness.

All we have to go on currently is the trademark application. So, it is still too soon to provide any concrete statements. Since Oppo has been launching an increasing number of devices with 5G networking, the Reno Glow could also receive a similar treatment. But for more details, we will have to wait a while. Samsung‘s flagship series of smartphones is just around the corner. The 2020 premium grade handsets are expected to be unveiled at Samsung Unpacked event on 11th February 2020 and will bring new features and improvements over its predecessor. One of these improvements will likely be in the camera department as the upcoming series is reported to feature a new Samsung Super ISO technology.

The South Korean tech giant recently applied for a trademark in Great Britain at the UK IPO (Intellectual Property Office) for the name Super ISO. The description of the trademark carries terms for “camera sensor for smartphones; image sensor for video cameras; computer software for processing digital images.” Meaning, that the Galaxy S20 series will feature an improved image sensor.

The new sensors will be better in terms of light sensitivity range than its previous iterations, the Galaxy S10 which received an ISO range of 50 – 800 and later extended to 3200. According to a known leakster, Ice Universe, it was also revealed that the ISO in the Galaxy S20 will be in the 6400 ISO range which is double in value over its previous iteration.

Higher ISO value translates to a better low light performance from a camera sensor. With values as high as 6400, the sensors become more sensitive and are able to gather more light for capturing an image. The end results are images which are better exposed than lower ISO values and, with a good noise reduction algorithm, can manage to offer better details even in bad lighting conditions as well.

Unfortunately, the exact specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series cameras are unknown. However, it is expected that one device in the series will feature the 108MP primary camera (probably the Galaxy S20 Ultra) alongside a wide angle and ultra wide angle lens. Similarly, a telephoto lens is also expected to make an appearance along with a 3F ToF camera.

Samsung smartphones are known for the AMOLED display panels and the company has greatly improved the Active-Matrix OLED display over the years. Now, the company seems to be moving a step forward with its upcoming flagship smartphones.

As per the report, the Samsung Galaxy S11 smartphone will come with SAMOLED display. The company is expected to soon showcase this new display type for which Samsung filed trademark in South Korea with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).

The trademark application has been categorized as Class 9/11 with the description mentioning OLED display; smartphone display; monitor; television screen; digital signage; computer screen’. On the same day, the company also filed for the same trademark with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).

However, we expect to be a major development in terms of display technology coming from Samsung and thus, it could be used in the company’s upcoming flagship smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S11 lineup and the next-generation Galaxy Fold smartphone. But do note that this is just a speculation and the company has not confirmed anything as such.

The current-generation flagships — Galaxy S10 lineup and the Galaxy Fold, both come with Dynamic AMOLED display. The company is also using Super AMOLED display for its mid-range and premium mid-range phones. Now it remains to be seen what this upcoming SAMOLED display is and how it is better than the company’s current offerings.

LG has trademarked two new monikers for the smartphones — LG V60S and LG K50S. The development comes ahead of IFA 2019 so there’s a possibility that we could hear more about these two phones at the trade show.

As per the report, LG Electronics had filed a trademark for the name “LG V60S” in South Korea. The filing was submitted to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) on 2nd August which has been listed online.

With LG V60 and LG K50 getting an “S” edition smartphones, it’s hard to say if the new devices will be an upgrade or downgrade over the original model. The LG G8S, which was launched soon after the launch of LG G8, was a slight downgrade. However, the LG V30S was a clear upgrade over the V30.

At the upcoming IFA 2019, South Korea-based LG is expected to announce LG V60 flagship smartphone, which the company has been teasing with its dual-screen feature. It should be a clear upgrade over the V50, though we don’t have specifics yet. We are expecting the LG V60S to be placed somewhere between LG V50 and V60.

Since the LG K50 is an entry-level smartphone, we are expecting the LG K50S to be an upgrade over the original model. We also expect the company to announce the LG G8X along with these two smartphones at IFA 2019. However, the report adds that while the LG V60S will be revealed at IFA 2019, the phone will be officially launched in 2020.

It has already been confirmed that the Chinese telecom giant Huawei is working on an open-source Android-based mobile operating system. The OS, which is said to have been named HongMeng OS in China and Ark/Oak OS for the rest of the world, could go official in the coming months.

Now, the Chinese company has filed a trademark for yet another name for its upcoming operating system — Harmony OS. The filing with the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) notes that the trademark is related to “mobile operating systems; computer operating systems; downloadable operating system programs.”

As per the report, the application was filed by a firm called Forresters. This is the same company that also filed Huawei’s Hongmeng OS and P Smart Z trademarks. As we all know, the former filing is another name for the brand’s new operating system.

Huawei confirmed the development of its own mobile OS after the company was put on the “entity list”  by the United States, banning all type of trade with the Chinese giant. While the US is moving ahead to allow some companies to resume business with Huawei, nothing can be sure with the Trump administration.

In an unlikely event where Huawei gets banned from using Google’s Android OS, the company is all set to replace it with the HongMong OS or whatever it ends up being named. Recently, it was reported that the HongMong OS is about 60 percent faster than Android and macOS and other Chinese brand likes Vivo and Oppo also participated in the testing.

In recent interviews, Huawei’s executives said that the operating system won’t be limited to just smartphone and will cover a wide range of products, including support for the current portfolio of products from Huawei, including routers, network switches, tablets, computers and data centers.

Google has also lobbied with the US government and asked them to allow Huawei to keep using Android OS. If Huawei is forced to give up using Android, the company will start using its own OS which will undermine Google’s absolute dominance with Android over the smartphone market, especially in China. It stands to lose around 700-800 million users if Huawei gives up using the Android operating system.
