In a startling revelation, sources have disclosed that China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) employed equipment from ASML Holding, including their immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) machines, to manufacture an advanced processor for Huawei Technologies’ latest 5G smartphones. 

The use of ASML’s technology, despite broad export restrictions imposed by the US, raises concerns about China’s rapid progress in chip manufacturing. Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro series, powered by a 7-nanometer chip, showcased the nation’s technological prowess, leaving experts questioning the effectiveness of international controls.

ASML, a key player in the global chip supply chain, saw its shares dip in response to the news. While the company has a monopoly on advanced extreme ultraviolet lithography systems (EUVs), it also supplies less-advanced DUV machines for producing mature semiconductors. Although ASML has been unable to sell its EUV machines to China due to strict export regulations, the DUV models were utilized by SMIC in combination with tools from other firms to create the groundbreaking chip for Huawei’s 5G smartphones.

This development hints that export restrictions on ASML’s advanced technology might have been implemented too late to curb China’s technological advancements, raising concerns about potential military implications. It brings Smooth Envision to improve system performance by enhancing RAM utilization, etc. For seamless multitasking, it debuts the App Retainer feature to select apps that need restoring to their last state. Several other customization and personalization features are also part of the latest FunTouch OS iteration.

We expect these features to be part of the Origin OS 4 which will launch for iQOO and Vivo smartphones in China.

These substitution initiatives have reshaped the software industry landscape, with major foreign makers’ combined market share dropping from 57.3% in 2018 to 27.3% by 2022. However, foreign firms still dominate in banking and telecoms database management, constituting 90% of the market share.

International Implications:

China’s substitution efforts do not violate international accords due to its non-signatory status in World Trade Organization clauses governing public procurement. However, these initiatives have raised concerns among foreign tech companies and trade organizations, leading to calls for fair competition and non-politicized procurement procedures.

Connectivity: The processor features Snapdragon X65 5G modem with speeds up to 10 Gbps, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4.

Other Features: The Snapdragon X Elite supports up to UHD 120Hz displays, HDR10, AV1 encoding, 4K HDR video decoding, and Snapdragon Sound Tech Suite for lossless audio. Furthermore, it promises robust “enterprise-grade” security.

Qualcomm to bring custom Oryon cores to Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in 2024

Qualcomm has announced that its custom Oryon cores will come to its flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 mobile SoC in 2024. This is the first time that Qualcomm will use its own CPU cores in a smartphone chipset since the Snapdragon 820 and 821 in 2016.

Qualcomm acquired Nuvia, a chip design company founded by former Apple engineers, in March 2021. Nuvia is developing custom Arm-compatible CPU cores, and Qualcomm has said that the Oryon cores are based on Nuvia’s designs.

Qualcomm has already announced the Snapdragon X Elite PC chipset featuring the Oryon CPU. The company claims that the Oryon cores offer better single-threaded performance than both the Apple Silicon M2 Max and the Intel Core i9-13980HX while consuming 70% less power than the Core i9-13960HX for the same amount of work completed.

However, it’s unlikely that the Oryon cores in their current computing-focused state will make it to mobile. Instead, Qualcomm is likely to use cut-down versions of the Oryon cores on mobile.

This will give Qualcomm more control over the design of its CPUs and could allow the company to differentiate itself from its competitors, which use modified Arm Total Compute Solutions (TCS) cores.

It’s not yet clear exactly what form the Oryon cores will take on mobile. However, the fact that Qualcomm is using its own custom CPU cores is an exciting development for the mobile industry. It could lead to more powerful and efficient mobile devices in the future.

There are massive other improvements over its predecessor to better compete with other OEMs.

Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro Specifications (Rumored)

As per leaks, the Xiaomi 14 could come with a 6.44-inch C8 OLED 12-bit display offering 120Hz refresh rate and 2800 nits peak brightness. The Xiaomi 14 Pro could come with a 6.7-inch Micro Quad Curved display, 1-120Hz dynamic refresh rate, 2K resolution, and 1mm narrow bezels.

It is set to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 4 storage, and the new VC cooling System. Xiaomi 14 will debut with a 4600 mAh battery bundling 90W fast charging, and the Xiaomi 14 Pro will feature a 4860 mAh battery with 120W wired charging.

In the camera section, the Xiaomi 14 Pro is set to feature a triple rear camera module carrying 3x 50MP sensors with different sizes and focal lengths. It could feature a 1-inch Sony IMX9XX series sensor, while the standard Xiaomi 14 will feature a 50MP OV50H primary sensor in its triple-camera module.

Xiaomi 14 series is coming with the HyperOS and its new architecture, which will bring improved UI, features, and better performance.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra grabs EEC Certification along with a new Redmi Smartphone

Xiaomi is all set to unveil the Xiaomi 14 series in China consisting of Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. It is highly likely that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra would join them later. However, a recent EEC listing does confirm its global launch later this year or early next year. The device is already been spotted on the IMEI database.

The device with model code 24030PN60G appeared on the Eurasian Economic Commission. As per the model code, the first two digits denote the Year 2024; ‘ 03’ confirms March month, and the ‘G’ indicates it is a global variant. Other details about the device are yet under wraps, and the EEC listing hardly confirms anything about the device’s specifications.

As of now, there’s no indication that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra could launch in China, as only the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro are actively teased by the company.

Along with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, a new Redmi smartphone with model code 23129RN51X appeared on the EEC. It is expected to be the Redmi 13C.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra is expected to come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and could feature up to 16GB RAM support. It could launch in three different storage variants – 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Like the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro which are launching with the HyperOS, the Ultra variant will ship with the new OS Skin.

However, the Vivo X100 5G has leaked on multiple occasions, and is expected to launch alongside teh Vivo X100 Pro and Vivo X100 Pro+. The new Vivo X100 series is expected to ship with recently launched Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. As per a leak via DCS, the Vivo X100 is expected to come with Sony IMX920 camera sensor and Dimensity 9300 SoC which will launch on November 6. Both the Vivo X100 Pro and Vivo X100 Pro+ is expected to ship with Sony IMX663 ultra-wide lens.

It is expected to bundle a 5100 mAh battery with 120W fast charging. Meanwhile, the Vivo X100 Pro is expected to ship with 5400 mAh battery bundling support for 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

The LTE model was the first to leak in renders revealing its design. Now, this phone has appeared in live images along with its retail box.

The live images of Redmi 13C come from Newzonly. The pictures showcase the front and the back of the handset. A couple of images also show the retail box.

The device in the pictures is green in color. As per previous leaks, the phone will be also available in blue and black color options.

Going by the light reflection in one of the images, the Redmi 13C might feature a glass panel like the Redmi 12. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of glossy plastic as well.

Further, the protective film on the handset’s front has the spec highlights. As per that, the device comes with a 6.74-inch 90Hz display, a 50MP rear camera, and a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W charging.

The phone is said to house an octa-core processor. Unfortunately, the exact chip is not known at the moment. 

According to earlier leaks, the Redmi 13C sports a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is also expected to be released as Poco C65 in some markets.

The smartphone should go official sooner rather than later. There’s a chance it may get announced in November.

Honor Magic 6 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, have its own assistant “YOYO”

Honor has announced that its upcoming Magic 6 series will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform. The Magic 6 will also feature a new AI assistant called YOYO and an eye-tracking-based multimodal interaction called Magic Capsule.

YOYO is powered by an on-device large language model with 7 billion parameters, which means that it can perform complex tasks such as answering questions, creating short videos, and providing personalized recommendations without the need to send any data to the cloud.

Another feature is Magic Capsule, which Honor says is a new way to interact with your phone using your eyes. It will be powered by Snapdragon Seamless technology, although Honor has not yet announced any specific details about how it will work.

The Honor Magic 6 series will reportedly consist of two smartphones, the Honor Magic 6 and the Magic 6 Pro. The latter has already been spotted in the wild with a pill-shaped notch and is expected to have the same 12MP ultrawide selfie camera and time of flight (ToF) 3D camera as the Magic 5 Pro.

Honor has not yet announced a release date for the Magic 6 series, but we expect it to arrive early next year.

Realme GT 5 Pro design out via TENAA images

Realme has confirmed that its next flagship smartphone is called Realme GT 5 Pro. The brand has officially started teasing the arrival of this device. However, it is yet to disclose the launch date.

As we have been hearing about this phone for months, we know quite a bit about it. Earlier today, the product’s listing went live on TENAA with images. Let’s go through its design.

Realme GT 5 Pro rocks a curved screen and an Oreo camera module

The TENAA listing of Realme GT 5 Pro shows the handset in white color. It should be also available in other color options, including a vegan leather variant.

The front of the device is fitted with a centered punch-hole curved display. Whereas, the rear panel has a giant Oreo-shaped camera module. Both power and volume buttons are located on the right side.

The camera island seems to have four sensors and an LED flashlight. But a reliable tipster claims that the phone will come with a Sony triple camera setup.

It is tipped to feature an IMX966 primary sensor, an IMX581 ultrawide snapper, and an IMX890 3x telephoto shooter (periscope). The same source also says that the handset will flaunt a Chinese-made (possibly BOE) 1.5K OLED display.

On the other hand, Realme has officially confirmed the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip underneath the Realme GT 5 Pro. The brand has even revealed that the smartphone will be released in global markets.

As far as other specs are concerned, the product is expected to arrive with LPDDR5x RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, 10,000mm² VC liquid cooling system, and a 5,400mAh battery with support for 100W wired charging as well as 50W wireless charging.

Vivo X100, X100 Pro camera specifications emerge well before launch

MediaTek will unveil the Dimensity 9300 chipset on Nov. 6, and the Vivo X100 series that is expected to launch later in November could be the first phone to feature it. In a new Weibo post, tipster Digital Chat Station has leaked the camera specifications of the X100 and X100 Pro.

According to the leaker, the Vivo X100’s rear camera setup will feature a Sony IMX920 as the primary camera, a Samsung JN1 lens for ultra-wide shots, and an OmniVision OV64B telephoto camera for 3x optical zoom.

The Vivo X100 Pro will have the same ultra-wide lens and telephoto camera as the X100. However, the telephoto snapper will offer a higher 4.3x optical zoom. In addition, it will have the 1-inch IMX989 camera sensor as the primary snapper.

The display sizes of the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro are not known yet. However, reports have revealed that both phones will feature a curved-edge OLED screen that offers a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. There is a possibility that there could be another variant of the Vivo X100 featuring a flat display.

The Vivo X100 is likely to pack a 5,100mAh battery, whereas the Pro model will be equipped with a 5,400mAh battery. Both devices are expected to support 120W wired charging, whereas the Pro model will also offer 50W wireless charging. The lineup will come preloaded with the latest Android 14, which will have a layer of OriginOS 4 on top.

Both models will also feature the Dimensity 9300 chip and the latest LPDDR5T RAM technology for top-notch performance. It is also being said that the X100 Pro will come with support for two-way satellite communication. The X100 series and the Vivo Watch 3 smartwatch are expected to launch in the third week of November.

iQOO 12 to launch in India as country’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone

The iQOO 12 5G smartphone, which is scheduled to launch in China next month, will also be arriving in the Indian market as the country’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone. This was confirmed by iQOO India CEO Nipun Marya on Twitter.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the latest and most powerful mobile chipset from Qualcomm, and it is expected to deliver significant performance improvements over the previous generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The device will also feature a dedicated display processor with ray-tracing capabilities, which should make for a more immersive gaming experience.

According to rumors, the iQOO 12 5G will sport a flat AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution, with support for a 144Hz refresh rate. The smartphone should have four cameras in total on the back, led by a 50-megapixel OV50H primary camera with optical image stabilization (OIS).

Likewise, it will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery. BMW M Motorsport will also likely partner with iQOO again for a Legend Edition (White) iQOO 12 5G with the tricolor BMW M stripes. Besides this, we might see the smartphones in Black and Red colors.

The iQOO 12 and iQOO 12 Pro smartphones will be launched in China on November 7, at 7 PM local time. We will learn more about the final specifications and India launch details of the iQOO 12 after the Chinese launch.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset-equipped Xiaomi 14 scored 1,992,387 on the AnTuTu benchmarks, just a little bit lower than the Dimensity 9300 device on the same platform. To recall, the Dimensity 9300 device recently secured the highest-ever AnTuTu score of 2,055,084. Furthermore, the Xiaomi 14’s AnTuTu score falls below Qualcomm’s official claim, which states that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can reach a maximum score of 2,139,281 on AnTuTu benchmarks.

In the CPU test of AnTuTu, the Xiaomi 14 scored 424,541 points. In the GPU, memory, and UX tests, it scored 855,774, 391,434, and 320,638 points, respectively. Shown below are the live shots of the Xiaomi 14 released by the tipster.

Xiaomi has already confirmed that the Xiaomi 14 will feature a 6.36-inch Huaxing C8 OLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 3,000 nits of brightness. It will come preloaded with the company’s self-developed HyperOS, which will be overlaid on Android 14.

According to tipster Ishan Agarwal, the Xiaomi 14 series will offer up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage. He added that the Xiaomi 14’s base variant (8GB+256GB) will be priced at 4,299 Yuan (~$587), whereas the 14 Pro’s starting model (12GB+256GB) will cost 5,399 Yuan (~$739). The Xiaomi 14 will come in multiple shades, such as white, black, pink, and green, whereas the 14 Pro will be available in white, black, and green.
