What is Satellite Connectivity on Smartphones and How Does it Work?

Last year, on September 6, it was Huawei, not Apple, that first introduced satellite connectivity on a mainstream smartphone. A day later, on September 7, the Cupertino company also introduced this new technology with the iPhone 14 series. Satellite connectivity allows a phone to connect to a low-orbit satellite and send an SOS message even when there is no cellular signal reception.

The life-saving satellite communication feature is coming to more phones soon. Google has made it compatible with Android 14, and there are rumors that Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi will bring it to their devices through Qualcomm. It’s clear that satellite communication on phones could be the next big thing, so it’s important you know what it is and how it works.

What is Satellite connectivity on modern phones?

If you’re anything like us, you must have seen those old satellite phones with long antennas sticking out of their heads. Unlike your regular cell phone, a satphone connects to other phones or the telephone network via a radio link through satellites orbiting the Earth instead of terrestrial cell sites. This enables them to be useful even in the remotest locations.

Carrying a satellite phone in our pockets is not an option for most of us, so manufacturers are pushing the tech on modern smartphones, and yes, with no visible antennas. However, the current technology only allows you to send text messages via satellite and not make any calls. Also, there are certain hardware requirements for integrating this feature into smartphones. As Mishaal Rahmaan points out, the feature will depend on the modem hardware in the device you are using.

If you’re wondering how this feature can help you, here’s an example: Imagine you’re feeling adventurous and plan a trip to a remote location in the world. You get there and find yourself beyond the reach of cellular towers. God forbid, you get into an emergency and can’t reach out to someone. Satellite communication on your phone can solve this problem by providing a connection even when there is no terrestrial network available. We have already heard of numerous cases where satellite SOS technology has saved lives, the most recent being a family who used this feature to escape the Hawaii wildfires.

How does Satellite connectivity work on smartphones?

To support satellite connectivity, smartphone manufacturers need to tightly integrate hardware and software. The Apple iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models have hardware components that are deeply integrated with software, allowing antennas to directly connect to a satellite.

Apple has partnered with Globalstar, a satellite communications company that operates a constellation of 48 low-orbit satellites. To send emergency messages via satellite, Apple developed a unique compression algorithm that shrinks text messages to a third of their original size. The emergency message is received by one of Globalstar’s satellites in low-earth orbit, which travels at speeds of approximately 16,000 mph. The satellite then passes the message down to ground stations located at key points all over the world.

Apple iPhone 14 satellite connectivity

Huawei Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro smartphones can send short texts and use navigation thanks to China’s global BeiDou satellite network. However, Huawei’s description of the system suggests that the Mate 50 phones can only send texts via satellite, not receive them.

It’s possible the future phones will implement the technology in a different way. They may even bring voice and data connectivity.

What lies in the future?

Many Android brands could introduce this feature with their upcoming flagship phones. Qualcomm announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) that phone makers, including Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Nothing, and Honor, are ready to bring satellite communication capabilities to their phones. However, there are no specific details available as of now.

Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon Satellite technology in partnership with satellite service provider Iridium at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It will allow Android smartphones to send two-way text messages and access other messaging apps using satellites in emergency situations, similar to what we have seen on iPhones.

In addition, a recent report suggests Google wants to bring satellite connectivity to Messages (Via Mishaal Rahmaan). The search giant appears to be adding the user interface (UI) elements required to initiate emergency SOS messages via satellite within its Messages app. It shouldn’t be a surprise since Google has already announced that Android 14 will support satellite connectivity.

T-Mobile also announced its own partnership with SpaceX to provide satellite connectivity on smartphones through Starlink satellites. MediaTek also joined the fray in February 2023 and showed off two chipsets that enable two-way satellite communication on smartphones. And let’s not forget the rumors about satellite connectivity on future Samsung flagships that have been circulating since last year.

Satellite connectivity on phones is the next big thing

There’s no doubt satellite Communication on smartphones has the potential to have a significant impact on our lives. The promise of continuous, far-reaching connectivity can be a game-changer, especially in life-threatening situations. Clearly, this makes satellite communication on smartphones not just a luxury, but a possible lifesaver.

Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus to arrive with a major design change

Now that Samsung has unveiled the 2023 foldable phones, the focus of the rumor mill gradually switches to the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones, which is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2024. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Ice Universe, reveals a major design change that will come to the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus phones.

Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+ to feature iPhone-like flat edges

Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus
Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus

The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are equipped with a flat back and a slightly protruding middle frame. The new leak suggests that the South Korean tech giant will ditch this design on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus. In recent times, many smartphone manufacturers have adopted the flat-edge design seen on iPhones. The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus are also expected to sport flattened edges, according to the tipster.

The leak does not say anything about the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which indicates that its frame design will diverge from that of the S24 and S24+. Hence, akin to the approach taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra, it is possible that the S24 Ultra model might adopt an edge panel design to establish its uniqueness in terms of design attributes when compared to the S24 and S24+.

Rumors surrounding the Galaxy S24 series say that it will be available in Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset variants in different markets. The entire series is also said to feature the latest M13 OLED panel for better visuals and arrive with support for two-way satellite communication.

TSMC Cuts Prices – A Blessing for Buyers but a Challenge for the Chip Manufacturer

In a world driven by technology, the sudden cut in prices by TSMC, a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, has taken the industry by surprise. This article explores the impact of this decision, the reasons behind it, and what it means for both the company and its customers.

The first quarter saw a mild increase in revenue, but it dipped in the following quarter

TSMC, known for catering to giants like Apple, Qualcomm, and Huawei, initially planned to increase quotations for advanced manufacturing processes by 2024. But in a turn of events, they reduced the foundry price of 8-inch wafers by up to 30% last week. The reason? Lackluster demand.

TSMC

This reduction in prices may come as a boon for tech companies, especially those in the automotive chip sector. TSMC’s lower quotations may translate to more affordable products for end consumers. But for TSMC, this might be a double-edged sword.

The company’s financial reports showcase a mixed picture. While the first quarter of the year showed a modest increase in revenue, the second quarter witnessed a dip in both revenue and net profit, marking the smallest quarterly increase in nearly four years.

Despite these challenges, TSMC’s decision to lower prices is a reminder that the market is ever-changing. While the immediate future might seem uncertain, this could be a strategic move by TSMC to retain its customer base and adapt to a new market reality.

The Electric Ladyland Bike Combines the Best of Jimi Hendrix and Classic Design

Music and motorcycles are two cultural symbols that are seldom seen together, yet they are inseparably connected for many riders. Jürgen Becker, a motorcycle designer, has found a way to translate the electrifying beat of rock and roll into an actual electric motorcycle, naming it after Jimi Hendrix’s legendary album, “Electric Ladyland.”

The Electric Bike features a 10 Kilowatt Electric Motor that can help you hit 62 miles per hour

Becker’s creation is more than a novelty. It’s a fusion of the classic and the contemporary, merging the spirit of the ’60s with the future of eco-friendly transportation. Starting with a 1955 Minsk M1A—a relic abandoned by the Red Army—the transformation into Electric Ladyland tells a unique tale of preservation and innovation.

Electric

While maintaining the original aesthetics, Becker replaced the traditional engine with a lightweight, 10-kilowatt electric motor. Hitting a top speed of 62 miles per hour, the bike’s energy comes from a creatively designed battery compartment that mimics vintage electronics. This blend of old and new extends to the dashboard, where modern blue backlit indicators meet classic fuel tank housing.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Electric Ladyland is the integration of music into its very design. The connector plug from a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar links the electronics with the battery pack, paying homage to the musical inspiration behind the project.

The bike’s nearly untouched appearance, from the patina of the 1955 Minsk to the wire-spoke wheels, resonates with the timeless feel of the rock era. Electric Ladyland represents not just a custom motorcycle but a ride into the soul of rock music, a journey that celebrates history, embraces the present, and looks forward to a greener future.

Here’s a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Render that will Raise Eyebrows

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, although months away from launch, is sparking interest with rumors and concept videos that hint at groundbreaking features. But are these features leading Samsung’s innovation, or simply following industry trends?

The new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra might just feature a Titanium Frame

One of the rumors surrounding the S24 Ultra is its new titanium frame. While it’s undoubtedly strong and light, it mirrors a similar rumor about the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro. It’s not a revolution, but perhaps an evolution of the “Armor Aluminum” Samsung already uses.

Galaxy S24 Ultra

The Galaxy S24 Ultra may depart from previous Ultra models with its slightly curved frame. It’s an eyebrow-raiser but gives the company a chance to show it’s not afraid to shake things up. Is it a fresh look or a trend-based decision? Growing the display size by 0.1 inch and upgrading the OLED panel to 144Hz might be seen as modest changes. Meanwhile, internals like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and increased RAM indicate a push for performance. But are these truly significant leaps?

With a rumored 50MP telephoto lens and enhanced low-light capture, the new camera system looks promising. But how much more can be achieved after the already stellar S23 Ultra? The introduction of exclusive red and green options might be viewed as chic. Is it a way to make the phone stand out or simply a play at fashion?

While the Galaxy S24 Ultra promises many enhancements, whether they’re truly innovative or trend-based will only be revealed at its launch in February 2024. It’s an exciting time for tech enthusiasts, but the question remains: Is Samsung leading the way, or walking a path already paved by others?

Under the hood, the iQOO Z8 will feature the Dimensity 8200 chipset. The leak claims that the device will come with 8 GB / 12 GB of RAM. As per a recent report, the highest variant of the device will offer 512 GB of storage, which in turn suggests that it may also come in 128 GB and 256 GB storage options.

The phone will run on OriginOS 3.0-based Android 13 and pack a 5,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support. On the front, the device will have a 16-megapixel selfie camera, and its rear shell will feature a 64-megapixel (main, with OIS) + 2-megapixel (macro) dual camera unit.

The Snapdragon 728G-powered iQOO Z7 was made available with a starting price of 1,599 Yuan (~$219) in China. Hence, there is a possibility that the iQOO Z8 may arrive with a similar price tag. The Z8 is expected to arrive in three shades: black, blue, and Isle of Man (green).

It appears that the device will not have a plastic frame, but a metallic one. The tipster claims that the bezel control is the narrowest among the three phones. He further says that the texture of the rear shell is better than that of most flagship phones.

As it is already known, the Realme GT 5 will come equipped with a 6.74-inch OLED panel that offers a 1.5K resolution. Just as the company has previously confirmed, DCS also said that the GT 5 will be announced this month in China. At present, there is no word on the global availability of the device.

The Realme GT 5 is expected to arrive in two battery variants: a 4,600mAh option with 240W charging, and a 5,200mAh variant with 150W charging. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip will power the device with up to 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. It will come with a 16-megapixel front camera and a 50-megapixel (Sony IMX890) + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera unit.

Apple’s Batterygate Lawsuit, company agrees to pay $65 to each eligible iPhone customer

Apple is battling the ongoing Batterygate Lawsuit, where the customers sued the company after facing performance throttling issues on the devices with the iOS updates. The lawsuit might have reached a settlement where Apple will soon be paying money to its roughly 3 million iPhone owners who filed the claim.

Apple

What is the Batterygate Lawsuit?

For those unaware, iPhone users started facing performance throttling issues on their phones after the iOS update back in 2017. Apple responded by admitting that the performance is throttling in iPhones as the battery life degrades. Since customers were not notified about this before the purchase, iPhone users sued the company for not being transparent about the device’s performance changes. They felt forced to buy the latest iPhone for a stable performance and battery life. This was later on called the Batterygate Lawsuit.

Who is Eligible for the claim?

Owners of the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE running on iOS 10.2.1 or above, who submitted the claim back in 2020 will be eligible for the compensation.

How much is Apple paying?

For those wondering, the amount the company will pay out to its roughly 3 million individuals who filed the claims will be around $65 each. It can be higher, as much as $90, depending upon the number of claims submitted.

It is still unclear how the people will get the settlement money or when they can expect to receive it. We will have to wait for Apple to make an official statement. So stay tuned.

On the Google Play Supported Devices list, the upcoming smartwatch from the search giant is codenamed ‘eos’. It confirms the Google Pixel Watch 2 moniker. As per past reports, the ‘eos’ codenamed is expected to be the LTE variant of the smartwatch. However, apart from this, the same listing does not reveal any additional details.

Meanwhile, the Google Play Console listing of the Pixel Watch 2 reveals key details along with a render of the device. It will retain a circular dial and a traditional-looking rotating crown on the right side. The design looks quite similar to the first-generation Pixel Watch. The smartwatch will feature a display resolution of 384 x 384 pixels and have a 324 DPI screen density.

Under the hood, the Google Pixel Watch 2 is listed with a Qualcomm SW5100 processor that comprises four Cortex-A53 cores coupled with an Adreno 702 GPU. This corresponds to the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chipset which is in line with previous rumor. The listing reveals 2GB RAM onboard. It will run on Android 13 OS probably with Wear OS 4.0 skinned on the top.

The latest certification listings do not reveal any additional information about the Pixel Watch 2. As per past leaks and rumors, the Pixel Watch 2 will reportedly be backed by a slightly upgraded 306mAh battery unit. Additionally, the upcoming offering will support Ultra-Wideband (UW) connectivity that will offer a host of functions including finding devices, seamless media playback to Google devices, and unlocking cars using digital ar key.
