Unlike any other car on the market, the Afeela aims to be a multi-functionality vehicle, boasting a whole variety of cutting-edge features and technology. To achieve this ambitious goal, the duo has enlisted the expertise of a key player in the tech industry – Qualcomm.

The displays inside the vehicle will be powered by Unreal Engine’s Graphics

The driving force behind Afeela’s tech is Qualcomm’s Digital Chassis platform. Known primarily for its processor chips in smartphones, Qualcomm has been diligently working on a cutting-edge automotive solution that collects data from all the sensors, powers interior screens, and facilitates over-the-air updates and real-time alerts through its 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Moreover, the AI capabilities allow the system to learn and adapt to the driver’s preferences by analyzing real-time data.

Afeela Electric

Ed Kim, chief analyst at AutoPacific, highlighted Qualcomm’s critical role in the Afeela project, stating, “Honda’s providing the platform, and Sony’s got the ideas, but it’s really Qualcomm that’s powering all this stuff.” The Afeela EV will be not only an epitome of technological advancement but also an aesthetic marvel. The interior screens will feature graphics developed on the Unreal Engine, the same engine that powers the displays in the GMC Hummer EV.

Set to enter production in 2025 at one of Honda’s Ohio factories, the Afeela EV will be built on Honda’s upcoming e:Architecture platform. Sony will bring its digital technologies and media content from its movie, music, and video game units to enhance the driving experience further.

As for the price, the Afeela EV is expected to be a niche, low-volume product, suggesting a price tag exceeding $100,000, considering the cutting-edge technology it houses. Deliveries are anticipated to begin in 2026, offering consumers a futuristic driving experience like never before.

QuietKat unveils its Rugged Dirtbike-style Electric Bike, named Lynx

As the competition for the most versatile e-bikes gets heated, startups and companies are firing on all cylinders. Designers and Engineers are collaborating every day to create an electric bike that can push limitations and make a mark for itself. The future of electric vehicles is undoubtedly exciting, and the new Lynx electric moped from QuietKat is a great testament to this claim.

The e-bike sports fat 24 x 4.5-inch tires for better grips on challenging landscapes

Hailing from Colorado, QuietKat is renowned for its rugged and powerful e-bikes, and the Lynx lives up to that reputation. While classified as an electric bicycle in the US market due to its use of standard bicycle components, the Lynx packs a punch with its 1,000-watt two-speed, hub-mounted motor. As for the battery, QuietKat has kept the specifics under wraps, heightening the anticipation until its official launch later in 2023.

Quietkat Lynx

Apart from its impressive power, the Lynx stands out with its unique styling. Drawing inspiration from cafe racers and scramblers, this e-bike boasts moto-inspired aesthetics combined with off-road ruggedness. Equipped with a high fender, round headlight, and contoured tail section with a luggage rack, the Lynx exudes an adventurous spirit. Its capability to handle various terrains is reinforced by long-travel suspension, a full-suspension frame, and 24×4.5-inch fat tires.

The technological features of the Lynx are equally impressive. LED lights, GPS tracking, and Bluetooth connectivity through a dedicated mobile application cater to tech enthusiasts seeking an integrated riding experience. However, it’s worth noting that the Lynx’s seat lacks adjustability, which may impact the ergonomics for some riders. Nevertheless, with its powerful motor, treating the Lynx as a little electric motorbike is a viable option. The addition of a durable synthetic leather moto-inspired saddle also appeals to environmentally conscious customers. QuietKat is yet to announce the official price and availability, but speculation suggests it will fall within the $4,000 USD ballpark.

Mercedes Benz will Unveil a Stunning Concept Car for its Entry-level Electric Segment

Mercedes-Benz is a renowned German automotive brand that is synonymous with luxury, performance, and innovation. Founded in 1926, the company is a division of Daimler AG and has established itself as a global leader in the luxury automobile industry. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are celebrated for their impeccable craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology, and design. The company is set to make an impact at this year’s IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, Germany, as it unveils a new concept that offers a glimpse into the future of its “Entry” segment. Last year, the luxury automaker announced its plans to restructure its product lineup into three distinct categories, and this teaser serves as an exciting preview of what’s to come.

The car is expected to make its debut in the year 2024

The sleek sedan showcased in the image exudes elegance and it features streamlined greenhouse and white accents that accentuate the body lines. Although certain details are still shrouded in mystery, a closer examination reveals a pronounced styling line extending from end to end and the integration of side-view mirrors into the A-pillars. Despite the absence of visible door handles, the concept remains faithful to the brand’s iconic design language at least.

Mercedes Benz

While specific details about the concept are being kept under wraps for now, it is believed that the Entry Luxury production model will be built on the versatile MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, potentially making its debut in 2024. Though Mercedes-Benz is undoubtedly heading towards a future of full electrification, the MMA architecture, though primarily optimized for electric powertrains, retains the flexibility to accommodate internal combustion engines as well.

Moreover, Mercedes-Benz aims to showcase its commitment to electric mobility at the upcoming show, presenting its entire range of current electrified models across all brands for the first time in a single location. As an added highlight, the event will also mark the world premiere of the new E-Class All-Terrain, boasting shared powertrains and styling cues from its distinguished model line.

Apple is Now Accepting Applications to Send Out Vision Pro Developer Kits

At Apple’s annual worldwide developer conference (WWDC) that took place last month, the Cupertino-based tech giant made a host of announcements. One of the announcements was about the much-rumored mixed reality headset called Apple Vision Pro which the company unveiled at the event. The kit also grants developers two additional code-level support requests, allowing them to troubleshoot any issues with their code swiftly and efficiently. This ensures that the development process remains smooth and streamlined, enabling developers to focus on creating a compelling mixed-reality experience. As the Vision Pro developer kit is an Apple-owned development device, it is required to be returned upon request. This approach ensures that the resources can be redistributed to facilitate the growth of more innovative projects in the future.

This Anti-AI tool will Confuse AI Algorithms if Your Picture gets Manipulated

Posting images online carries the risk of manipulation due to AI-driven technologies that can create deepfakes, alter photos, spread misinformation, and facilitate identity theft. To protect against this, a lot of people usually consider watermarking, sharing lower-resolution images, being cautious about the information shared, and using reliable sources. Raising awareness about image manipulation can also help combat the spread of deceptive content. However, with AI advancing rapidly, even this might not be enough in the long run. This is where the minds at MIT CSAIL come in. They have taken up the responsbility, showcasing their very own “PhotoGuard” technique. Unlike conventional watermarking, it tweaks certain pixels in an image, and it manages to confuse AI algorithms while remaining completely invisible to the human eye. Think of it like a puzzle that leaves Artificial Intelligence scratching its virtual head, clueless about what’s happening.

The more teamwork there is between corporations and developers, the better PhotoGuard can work

The “encoder” attack tricks AI models into seeing the image as something else entirely, while the more advanced “diffusion” attack disguises the image as a different target, making any generative AI edits pretty much a waste of time.

AI

Of course, no solution is foolproof (for now), and PhotoGuard has its limitations as well. For instance, someone who is really desperate might try to reverse engineer the protected images by adding digital noise or using other tricks. That’s where teamwork comes in! The more model developers, social media platforms, and policymakers work collaboratively, the more it can strengthen PhotoGuard’s defenses against sneaky attempts.

As AI technology charges forward, it’s essential for AI developers to invest in robust defenses to safeguard digital art. Only then can we maintain a world where AI and human creativity thrive together. The future of artistic expression is bright, and with the guardians of PhotoGuard on watch, we can rest assured that the virtual canvas remains a safe space for creative minds.

Samsung and LG working on power-efficient OLED panels

Samsung Display and LG Display are exploring the potential of a new low-refractive index Capping Layer (CPL) technology for small to medium-sized OLED panels, according to The Elec. Currently, high-refractive index CPL is widely used in this sector to reduce power consumption and improve light direction. The addition of low-refractive index CPL alongside the existing high-refractive index variant could enhance light utilization, increase optical efficiency, and potentially extend the product lifespan.

Credit: spie.org

However, incorporating an additional layer may pose challenges in terms of manufacturing and cost implications. To implement the new CPL, panel manufacturers need to convince smartphone producers like Samsung Electronics and Apple of its benefits.

Several companies, including Dongjin SEMICHEM, Hodogaya, LAPT, and PNH Tech, have been working on low-refractive index CPL technology and have started sample deliveries and preliminary stages with panel manufacturers. The final choice of suppliers will consider factors like quality, cost, and existing relationships.

According to Sammobile, Samsung and LG have previously showcased their innovation in OLED technology. Samsung introduced Eco2 OLED panels last year, boasting improved power efficiency, which was subsequently used in the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, some Samsung users, especially flagship users, have reported display issues such as pink, green, and white lines on their screens recently.

In parallel, Apple is collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to create a bezel-less OLED display for iPhones. This involves shifting electronic components from the bezel under the screen, requiring advancements in Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) and Under Panel Camera technologies. While challenges such as potential antenna interference and durability concerns exist, Apple is actively addressing these technical issues with the help of its partners.

The timeline for completing and implementing these new OLED technologies is uncertain. However, it is anticipated that future devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops may feature brighter, more power-efficient OLED screens with extended lifespans.

ViewSonic

ViewSonic VX3267U 4K monitor specs

This monitor features an In-Plane Switching (IP) panel type, which offers good color and viewing angles. The resolution is 3840 x 2160 pixels, providing a 4K display. With a 31.5-inch screen size, the visuals are clear and sharp, thanks to the 163 pixels per inch (ppi) pixel density. The color depth is 10 bits, likely achieved through 8-bit + Frame Rate Control (FRC) technology for better color gradation. The refresh rate is 60Hz, ensuring smooth visuals for everyday use and multimedia.

The monitor’s brightness is 350 cd/m², offering bright and vivid images. The response time (G2G) is 4ms, reducing motion blur in fast-paced content like games. The contrast ratio is 1000:1, creating a distinction between dark and bright areas. There are several interfaces available, including 2 HDMI 2.0 ports, 1 DisplayPort 1.4, 1 USB-C port with 65W power delivery, and a headphone output. The monitor also has built-in 2.5-watt speakers for basic audio playback.

Ergonomically, it offers tilt adjustment, a blue light filter, and VESA mounting compatibility (100 x 100 mm). The flicker-free backlight ensures a comfortable viewing experience. The monitor supports HDR10 technology for a wider range of colors and better contrast in HDR content. However, it does not specify any particular Sync Technology (e.g., AMD FreeSync or NVIDIA G-Sync) for variable refresh rates.

Pricing & availability

The ViewSonic VX3267U is expected to launch soon in the United States for $350. There is no word on the European availability at this moment.

HarmonyOS 4.0 is coming in August with a design overhaul, new features

The US trade ban forced Huawei to develop its own operating system, called HarmonyOS. The majority of Huawei phones in both China and the global market now operate on this OS, although global users may recognize it as EMUI. The company has already launched three major versions of HarmonyOS, each with several notable features and upgrades. Now, it is preparing to release the latest iteration, HarmonyOS 4.0, in August. Here are the details.

HarmonyOS 4.0 to be a solid upgrade

Huawei is going to announce HarmonyOS 4.0 on August 4. The company posted a picture of some code that returns “What to expect in August” and a big number 4, which hints that the announcement will be made at the annual HDC event in August. The new software should bring a significant design overhaul and a number of new features.

HarmonyOS 4.0

Richard Yu, CEO of consumer BG at Huawei, hinted at several features of HarmonyOS 4.0. The new software should bring new audio improvements for Huawei cars. It will allow for multiple people, devices, screens, and audio zones in-car systems. The OS will also support six-zone sound source positioning.

HarmonyOS 4.0 for smartphones will bring major design changes and new features, making it a significant upgrade over the current version. Beta testing is already underway, and some users have shared their initial impressions on social media. Being the latest flagships from the brand, the P60, Mate 50, and Mate 40 series are leading the way in the beta testing process, but the OS is currently limited to China. We expect the launch will also be limited to China, at least initially.

Those who have already upgraded to the HarmonyOS 4.0 developer beta have reported a positive experience. The new version features enhanced smoothness, interface improvements, and new features. Huawei’s version of Dynamic Island has been particularly well-received.
