The Lenovo Smart Paper e-note has been released in the Netherlands and the UK. The Lenovo Smart Paper was first showcased at CES 2023 but a global release is yet to happen. The product is available in the two European markets and is only orderable by residents of these two countries.

Lenovo Smart Paper

Lenovo had promised a Spring release for the Smart Paper and there had been multiple listings of the products in the US and Canada. However, these listings have now been taken down and availability is tied only to the UK and the Netherlands. Lenovo has omitted any shipping options for the model.

The Lenovo Smart Paper is a rebranded version of the Lenovo Yoga Paper from 2022. The Lenovo Yoga was originally released in China and the new Smart Paper supports more languages than the Yoga. The Smart Paper has a 10.3-inch E INK Carta HD e-paper screen with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pixels and 227ppi.

The Lenovo Smart Paper can be used comfortably to read in dark or dimly lit environments, thanks to its front light. You can also turn off the light and use ambient light for reading content. The tablet has a cover that puts the device in sleep mode whenever the screen is covered.

The Smart Paper is powered by the Rockchip RK3566 processor with a 4GB/ 64GB configuration. It supports Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and a USB-C port is also available for data transfer. Its 3,500mAh battery can last for up to 10 weeks and optical character recognition (OCR) is supported.

The Lenovo Smart Paper’s matte screen layer enhances the writing experience with its non-slippery surface. The stylus of the device is highly responsive with 23ms latency. Lenovo says the stylus offers a silky-smooth writing experience and it has 4,095 degrees of pressure sensitivity. The Lenovo Smart Paper e-note’s screen supports palm rejection technology.

It is unclear whether the Lenovo Smart Paper will support app installation via an app store or other means. This feature was lacking in the Lenovo Yoga. It was impossible to sideload apps and photos on the Lenovo Yoga. It is also unclear whether this drawback is also present in the new Smart Paper e-note. The Lenovo Smart Paper starts at €499 (~$536) and £450 (~$562) in the Netherlands and the UK respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 to get optimized Google apps for outer display

This year, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is receiving a major upgrade in the form of a larger cover display. If you recall the previous generation models, their outer displays had very limited functionality, including viewing notifications, adding widgets, taking selfies, and a few other features. However, the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 will differ in this regard. In fact, it may come with some Google applications specially optimized for the cover screen.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover screen to get a major boost

A new Sammobile report claims Samsung is working with Google to add some apps to the cover display of Galaxy Z Flip 5. This apparently includes Google Maps, Google Messages, and YouTube. As per the outlet, these apps will be complemented by Samsung’s own applications, which are expected to be optimized for the cover display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

As mentioned, the cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to be significantly larger compared to previous models. It is likely to have a 3.4-inch cover display that occupies almost the entire top half of the device. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch panel on its cover. However, it’s worth noting that the outer display of the Z Flip 5 will still be smaller than that of the Moto Razr 40 Ultra, which features a 3.6-inch display.

Both the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 4 are expected to feature a new hinge mechanism and the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. The flip phone is expected to get a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED main display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It will get dual rear camera setup, likely with 12MP main sensor. The smartphone is expected to launch at the Unpacked event later this year along with several other products.

Amazon Alexa Allegedly Locks User out of Smart Home Devices upon hearing “Racist Remark”

In a world where smart homes and virtual assistants are getting more mainstream day by day, one individual recently experienced an annoying and rather disarming series of events with their Amazon account. Locked out for nearly a week, their devices became unresponsive, leaving them with a house full of silence and unanswered questions. This article discusses their discomfort, uncovering the cause, addressing the problem, and highlighting the need for better customer service from tech giants like Amazon.

Their Amazon Account was locked for almost one whole week

The troubles began when a package arrived at the author’s home. The following day, their Echo Show mysteriously signed out, rendering their smart home devices useless. Suspecting a potential security breach, they reached out to customer service, only to receive a surprising accusation. An executive claimed that the author’s doorbell had recorded racist remarks from the delivery driver.

Amazon Echo Dot

The author, armed with multiple cameras recording their property, reviewed the footage and found no evidence of such remarks. Instead, an automated response from their Eufy doorbell had been misheard. Despite presenting this evidence, their Amazon account remained locked, leaving their entire smart home system useless. The author questioned why Amazon chose to disable all services instead of opting for a more reasonable approach, such as sending an email or contacting the account owner. As a result of this experience, the author even thought about severing ties with Amazon Echo devices. It is still unclear if all of this was a misunderstanding or something else.

Days turned into a long weekend of frustration as the author waited for a response from Amazon. Finally, on Wednesday, their account was unlocked without any follow-up communication. The incident should serve as an example for Amazon to reassess their customer service protocols and adopt a more lenient approach in the future.

Honor Earbuds X5s launched with a 35-hour battery, ANC, and a price less than $20

During the Honor 90 and 90 Pro launch event last month, Honor also unveiled its new X5 TWS earbuds with basic features and a 27-hour battery. Surprisingly, the company has now unveiled a new pair of wireless earbuds that cost peanuts in comparison to the X5 but offer much better specifications. They offer active noise cancellation up to 30dB, a longer-lasting 35-hour battery, and even the design looks sleeker. Here are the details.

Honor Earbuds X5s are a steal deal

The new Honor X5s earbuds support up to 30 dB of active noise cancellation and also feature a transparency mode that allows you to hear environmental noise. You can easily switch between these two modes as per your preference. To remind you, the Honor X5 earbuds lacked ANC and debuted with Environmental noise cancellation, which barely offers any utility.

Honor X5s

The new headset features an in-ear design and is equipped with a 10mm driver unit. It supports ENC dual microphone call noise reduction and AAC high-definition codec. Inside the earbuds, there is a dual-mode Bluetooth 5.3 chip for connectivity, and it is also IP54 dustproof and waterproof.

When you connect the new TWS earbuds to an Honor mobile phone, they support quick pairing by opening the pop-up window. You can customize the touch and sound settings in the Honor Smart Space App. The new earbuds come with an oval charging case that features a USB-C charging port. They provide 9 hours of battery life when used individually and can reach a total of 35 hours of battery life with the charging case.

Now, let’s look at the price. The Honor X5s earbuds are currently listed on Jingdong at a price of 119 Yuan, which is approx. $16. This pricing is remarkably competitive for a pair of earbuds that offer active noise cancellation. In fact, it seems almost too good to be true, especially considering that the Honor X5 earbuds were initially launched in China with a price tag of 299 Yuan, around $40. Note that both earbuds aren’t available outside China yet.

Ex-Samsung employee accused of sharing chip technology with China

A former executive at Samsung Electronics, one of South Korea’s leading tech companies, has been indicted on charges of stealing company technology to establish a rival chip factory in China. The defendant, who also worked as a vice president at SK Hynix, another prominent chipmaker, is accused of illegally obtaining Samsung’s data with the intention of constructing a copycat facility just 1.5 km away from a Samsung chip manufacturing plant in Xian, China.

Six Others Charged in Connection with Chip Technology Espionage

Prosecutors have estimated that the theft of data has resulted in losses worth at least $233 million for Samsung Electronics. This incident is viewed as a significant threat to national economic security, as South Korea’s chip industry faces intensifying competition amid the ongoing rivalry between the United States and China.

The defendant, who was arrested last month, denies the allegations made against him. The trial date is yet to be confirmed by the court handling the case. Prosecutors have also indicted six other individuals believed to be involved, including an employee from an inspection company accused of leaking Samsung’s semiconductor factory’s architectural plan.

This development comes at a time when South Korea is actively supporting its chip sector. Both Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world’s top two memory chip manufacturers, have invested heavily in chip factories in China. While these companies rely on U.S. technology and equipment, approximately 40% of South Korea’s chip exports are directed to China.

Although China initially lagged behind in memory chip production, its firms have quickly caught up to South Korean competitors. Analysts estimate that the technology gap between NAND Flash chips produced by China’s YMTC and industry leaders like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix is now only two years or less.

To prevent technology leaks, South Korean companies typically develop cutting-edge chips in their home country before manufacturing them in their Chinese factories after a year or so. South Korea has been increasingly cracking down on corporate spying in recent months, as evident from the recent arrests of 77 individuals involved in 35 cases of suspected industrial espionage across various sectors.
