Samsung addresses camera blur issue on Galaxy S23 and S23+, working on fix

Samsung has recently confirmed that it will be addressing the camera blur issue experienced by some users of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+. Since the phones were launched earlier this year, users have reported a problem with blurring in certain areas of the images taken with the primary camera, often referred to as the “banana blur” issue.

Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus

Understanding the Camera Blurring Problem on Galaxy S23 and S23+

According to Samsung, the cause of the problem is the wider aperture of the primary camera. The company explained that the bright aperture, which is beneficial for low-light photography, can result in noticeable selective focus and make the background appear blurry in close-up shots. However, Samsung’s engineers are actively working on a solution, and an upcoming software update is expected to alleviate the issue.

In the meantime, Samsung has provided some suggestions to minimize the occurrence of the problem. Users are advised to take a step back from the subject if it is approximately 30cm away from the camera lens. Additionally, holding the phone vertically, rather than horizontally or obliquely, is recommended.

It is worth noting that it took Samsung some time to acknowledge the issue, and it remains uncertain whether it can be completely resolved due to the nature of the problem. However, some users have suggested that the inclusion of a dual-aperture lens, as seen in previous models like the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10, could have potentially provided a solution. Unfortunately, this feature was removed starting with the Galaxy S20.

Apple Reveals Usage Statistics Of iOS 16 And iPadOS 16 Ahead Of WWDC 2023

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is set to commence on June 5. The company is expected to announce the next-generation software versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and more. Ahead of the event, the Cupertino-based tech giant has shared the usage statistics of the iOS 16. The data has been measured by devices that transacted on the app store on May 30, 2023.

81 percent iPhones and 76 percent iPads running iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 respectively

Apple usually pushes software updates for up to five years after the devices are released. The company has revealed that iOS 16 which was released in September last year is running on 81 percent of iPhones globally. This figure grows to 90 percent only if we consider iPhones launched in the last four years i.e. from the iPhone 11 series to iPhone 14 series.

Out of the remaining 19 percent, 13 percent of iPhone users haven’t updated from iOS 15 and 6 percent are on iOS 14 and older. For those unaware, iOS 16 is still compatible with the iPhone 8 and newer models launched in or after 2017.

On the tablet side, Apple reveals that 71 percent of all iPads run on iPadOS 16 with the number going up to 76 percent if only the tablets introduced in the last four years are considered. However, 18 percent of these devices are still stuck with iPadOS 15 and 6 percent with earlier versions. The report adds that 20 percent of all iPads are running on iOS 15, and 9 percent are users with iPadOS 14 and older.

With iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 set to be announced in the coming days and roll out expected later this year, it will be interesting to see their adaptation compared to the iOS 16 and iPadOS 16.

Honor establishes chip design subsidiary following Oppo’s exit, joins Huawei, Xiaomi, and Vivo

Chinese smartphone brand Honor, formerly a sub-brand of Huawei, has launched a new subsidiary dedicated to chip design. This move comes shortly after rival company Oppo shut down its in-house chip unit and laid off numerous employees. The subsidiary, called Shanghai Honor Intelligent Technology Development Co, was established in Shanghai’s Lingang Free Trade Zone with a registered capital of 100 million yuan ($14 million). It operates under the ownership of Honor Terminal Co.

Honor

Honor’s New Chip Design Subsidiary

The primary focus of the new unit includes chip design, sales, related services, and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) application software. Honor has stated that the subsidiary will be one of its five research centers in China, with a particular emphasis on core software, graphics algorithms, communications, and photography. The other research centers are located in Beijing, Shenzhen, Xian, and Nanjing.

Although Honor has not explicitly confirmed whether chip development will be a part of the subsidiary’s activities, this move has garnered significant attention, especially following Oppo’s decision to disband its chip design team and release thousands of engineers. Oppo attributed the decision to uncertainties in the global economy and smartphone market, but speculations regarding non-financial factors, including US-China geopolitical tensions, have surfaced.

In contrast, Xiaomi, another major Chinese smartphone vendor, recently reaffirmed its commitment to chip development, considering it a crucial element of its core business that necessitates long-term investments.

Honor’s CEO, Zhao Ming, has stated that the company’s chip strategy will be determined based on specific requirements. He emphasized that the decision to pursue in-house development or collaborate with external partners will depend on the needs of their products. In March, Honor introduced its first self-developed radio frequency communication chip, the Honor C1, designed to enhance 5G signals. However, the company acknowledges that for more complex system-on-chip designs, collaborations with established suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek will be essential.

Established in 2013 by Huawei, Honor has rapidly gained popularity as one of China’s leading smartphone brands. It has expanded its presence to 20 international markets across Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. In November 2020, Honor was sold to a consortium led by the government of Shenzhen, its home city, as a strategic move to evade US trade sanctions that have affected Huawei.

Despite a 14% decline in total smartphone shipments in China due to an economic downturn, Honor managed to increase its shipments by 30% to reach 52.2 million units last year. Consequently, its market share rose from 12% to 18%, trailing only behind Vivo, the sibling brand of Oppo.

Apple’s AR/VR Headset will take Virtual Concerts to New Heights

Apple’s highly anticipated AR/VR headset is set to revolutionize the way we experience live events, and according to reports from 9to5Mac, one of its standout features will be virtual concerts. This application has been in the works at Apple for several years, with the goal of providing users with a seamless and immersive audience experience, whether the concert is happening in real-time or pre-recorded.

The same technology could be used for live sporting events as well

To make this ambitious project a reality, Apple acquired NextVR in 2020, a company known for its expertise in creating virtual reality experiences for live events such as sporting spectacles and concerts. Prior to being acquired by Apple, NextVR had already built an extensive content library and had collaborations with popular headsets like Oculus, HTC, and PlayStation.

Apple

The acquisition of NextVR has given Apple access to a vast pool of resources, both in terms of capital and networking capabilities. As a result, it is widely speculated by media experts that NextVR has made significant advancements in the creation of concert content. This suggests that Apple’s AR/VR headset, known as Reality Pro, and its operating system, xrOS, will offer users an unparalleled and immersive experience when it comes to attending virtual concerts. The technology isn’t limited to virtual concerts, however. Previous reports also state that Apple is integrating its other services, such as Fitness+ with its mixed reality headset, which will allow users to work out in Virtual Reality. The company might even integrate some sports applications with the VR/AR ecosystem, letting users enjoy the thrill of playing sports from the comfort of their homes.

By leveraging the power of augmented and virtual reality technologies, Apple aims to bridge the gap between physical and digital worlds, allowing users to feel as though they are truly present at a live concert. This innovative approach to entertainment showcases Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and redefining the way we consume media. The headset is expected to be unveiled at the WWDC 2023, which is right around the corner.

This new feature aims to help users find the information they need with minimal effort, delivering a more efficient and streamlined search experience.

Searching on Gmail will be far more easier, faster and user-friendly

When conducting a search within the Gmail app, machine learning models will now leverage various factors such as the search term, the most recent emails, and other relevant indicators to display the most suitable results at the top of the list. These results will be presented in a dedicated section, ensuring that users can quickly access the most pertinent information. Subsequently, the remaining results will be sorted based on their recency.

Gmail

This update primarily benefits end users who rely on Gmail for their email communication and file management. By prioritizing the most relevant information, this highly requested feature enables users to swiftly locate specific emails or files, saving valuable time and effort.

The Iconic Nintendo ‘Duck Hunt’ Gun was used to Rob a Convenience Store in the US

In a bizarre turn of events, a South Carolina man has been apprehended by the police after allegedly robbing a convenience store armed with a relic from the 1980s—a Nintendo light gun. The suspect, disguised in a mask, wig, and hoodie, wielded the NES Zapper gun accessory to carry out the crime. With a demand for cash and a wave of the modified gaming accessory, the 25-year-old made off with $300. This audacious act highlights the alarming trend of using fake guns in criminal activities, raising serious concerns about public safety.

Over 15 percent of robberies involve Fake Guns

According to York County deputies, the suspect brandished the Nintendo light gun, spray-painted black to resemble a real firearm, and pointed it at the store clerk, coercing them to hand over the cash from the register. Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the incident and later found the perpetrator in a Dollar General parking lot, still in possession of the modified weapon.

Nintendo Duck Hunt

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Zapper, the iconic accessory bundled with the NES console, was primarily used for games like Duck Hunt, Hogan’s Alley, and Gumshoe during the 1980s. Recognizable for its bright orange and gray design, the Zapper utilized an internal optical sensor to translate trigger presses into on-screen actions.

While this incident may seem comical at first glance, the use of fake guns in crimes is a grave concern. A study conducted by Congress in 1990 revealed that over 15 percent of robberies involved fake guns. These imitation firearms, often indistinguishable from real ones, pose a significant threat to victims. Consequently, many jurisdictions impose penalties for using fake guns that are comparable to those for real firearms.

Recognizing the potential danger posed by realistic-looking toy or replica guns, New York State has recently enacted legislation banning such items unless they are clearly distinguishable as fake, typically through the use of vibrant colors. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risks associated with fake guns and protect the public from potential harm.
