Samsung rumored to manufacture Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 for Galaxy chips

Recent reports suggest that Samsung may partner with Qualcomm to produce Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips for select models of the Galaxy S25 series. While some Galaxy S24 phones are expected to feature Samsung’s own Exynos 2400 processor, Samsung could potentially resume using customized Snapdragon chips a year later, with some of these chips being manufactured by Samsung Foundry.

Samsung Foundry

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: Fabricated by Samsung Foundry for Galaxy S25?

According to insider information shared by tipster Revegnus, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor will be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm (N3E) process. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 For Galaxy variant is rumored to utilize Samsung Foundry’s 3nm GAP (3GAP) process. This development implies that Samsung Foundry’s 3nm node could potentially rival TSMC’s 3nm process in terms of both performance and efficiency. However, it’s important to note that these details should be taken with caution, as the Galaxy S25 is still two years away, and more concrete information will likely emerge in late 2024.

If the rumors prove accurate, this would mark the first instance in a while where a company employs two different suppliers for the same chip, akin to Apple’s approach with the iPhone 6s‘ A9 processor. In that case, some A9 chips were produced using Samsung’s 14nm process, while others were manufactured using TSMC’s 16nm process. The Samsung-made A9 chip boasted a smaller size, while TSMC’s chips offered slightly better power efficiency.

Furthermore, alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 For Galaxy chip, Samsung’s highly anticipated Exynos chipset might also make its debut in certain Galaxy S25 devices. Both chips are expected to be produced using Samsung Foundry’s 3nm GAP process and are anticipated to offer similar performance levels. Although there may be slight differences between the two, Samsung will likely strive to minimize these variances, particularly in terms of power consumption.

Canon is exploring collaboration with smartphone manufacturers

Canon, a renowned Japanese imaging company, is reportedly considering entering into collaborations with smartphone manufacturers to adapt to the evolving market landscape. The trend of partnerships between smartphone brands and professional camera companies has been gaining momentum, offering a platform for the exchange of imaging and optical expertise, while simultaneously boosting brand value for both parties involved. For example, partnerships between vivo and Zeiss, OPPO and Hasselblad, and Xiaomi and Leica have given positive results. Canon seems keen on exploring this avenue as well.

A Lens on the Future: Canon Explores Potential Partnerships with Smartphone Makers

canon confenrence

In a recent interview, Mr. Hiroki Ozawa, Chairman of Canon China, acknowledged the increasing wave of collaboration between smartphone and camera manufacturers. He revealed that Canon has been actively researching this area, but the timing of their potential actions is still under consideration and decision-making. Recognizing the industry’s ongoing trend, Canon aims to make an independent judgment in alignment with the demands of the current market.

Interestingly, when Mr. Ozawa was questioned about the phrase “Photography makes three generations poor,” he emphasized that using a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera does not lead to financial strain but rather brings happiness. While acknowledging that DSLR cameras can be expensive, costing tens of thousands of yuan, he believes that the value received from owning such cameras and the emotional attachment associated with them far outweigh the initial investment.

According to Mr. Ozawa, DSLR cameras are favored by consumers due to their high cost-performance ratio. The photos captured with these cameras and the sentimental value they hold justify their purchase costs in the eyes of buyers.

Canon’s potential collaboration with smartphone manufacturers demonstrates their proactive approach to adapting to changing market dynamics. By leveraging their expertise and aligning with smartphone brands, Canon aims to offer consumers enhanced imaging capabilities and experiences while remaining competitive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Galaxy A24 debuts in Korea with MST-enabled Samsung Pay

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A24 last month in Vietnam. Since then, the company has been releasing this budget smartphone in multiple markets.

Today, the firm debuted this handset in its home country South Korea. It will be available for purchase starting tomorrow (May 19) for KRW 396,000 (~$300).

The Korean variant of the Galaxy A24 is unlike any other version of the phone. Because it comes with a useful feature, which Samsung removed from its smartphones in 2021.

Samsung Galaxy A24

The feature we are talking about is MST-enabled Samsung Pay. For the unaware, MST stands for Magnetic Secure Transmission and this feature mimics card swipe action on any PoS terminal.

Thus, older Samsung smartphones with Samsung Pay could be used to make transactions on non-NFC PoS machines too. The South Korean electronics giant removed this feature starting with the Galaxy S21 series as NFC-enabled PoS terminals can be now found almost everywhere.

It’s not known whether the return of MST feature will be limited to Korea or will be re-introduced in more markets. It would be nice to have this feature in other markets.

Anyways, the Galaxy A24 will be sold in Black, Light Green, and Dark Red color options in South Korea. As part of launch offers, the company is providing a 2-month free trial of YouTube Premium and a free Microsoft 365 Basic subscription for 6 months.

Some of the specs of the Galaxy A24 include a 6.5-inch 90Hz FHD+ Super AMOLED display, a MediaTek Helio G99 chip, an OIS-assisted 50MP primary camera, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 5,000mAh battery, and 25W fast wired charging support.

DJI Staff Refutes Claims of Exiting the US Market

DJI has strongly refuted recent online rumors claiming that the company has refused to pay fines and is exiting the US market. The company said that it has not issued any official statements or external communications conveying such information.

In a recent ruling by a federal court in Texas, DJI was found to have infringed upon the intellectual property of Textron, an aerospace technology company based in the United States. Following a trial that lasted for a week, the jury concurred with Textron Innovations, a subsidiary of Textron, in their claim that DJI’s drones violated two patents, ‘vehicle following’ and ‘ automatic hovering’ associated with drone flight control systems. The court then ordered DJI to pay damages totaling $279 million.

In response to the verdict, DJI released an official statement expressing its strong opposition to the ruling. The company stated that it will actively pursue all available means to defend its legal rights in this matter. DJI said that it has independently developed its technologies, having clear distinctions from Textron’s patents. While Textron’s vehicle-following technology incorporates both the position and direction of the followed vehicle, DJI drones solely rely on the position of the subject being tracked.

Similarly, DJI’s automatic hovering feature does not operate through a pilot inside the vehicle controlling it with mechanical and hydraulic systems, as claimed in Textron’s patent. Instead, DJI’s hovering functionality is based on a drone operator using a handheld remote controller. These differences underline DJI’s unique approach to technology development and refute claims of patent infringement. It further stated that “Textron is a military helicopter company. DJI is a civilian drone company. No commonality exists between the technologies,”

Founded by Frank Wang in 2006, DJI started as a small venture in a college dorm room. It has since grown into a prominent tech company with thousands of employees, a quarter of whom are engaged in research and development activities. DJI’s products have found applications in military settings, joining the ranks of various other technology companies in this regard. However, in December 2021, the United States government placed DJI on an investment blacklist due to allegations of its involvement in surveillance activities targeting Uighur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region.

Meizu 20’s new colorway to come with white bezels

Meizu made a comeback in the smartphone market with the new Meizu 20 series. The standard variant in the line debuted with a design reminiscent of the Galaxy S23 line, including three distinct camera rings. It was unveiled in Rose Gold, Yellow, Mint, and Gray color options. However, it appears that the company is ready to release a new shade of the handset with a unique twist. According to a tipster, Meizu may launch a White/Silver color option for the Meizu 20, with an entirely white front panel.

This new Meizu 20 stands out from the crowd

There was a time when smartphones commonly had thick bezels that matched the overall color scheme of the device. However, this trend slowly died down as bezels started to get thinner. Most modern phones now have black borders surrounding the display, regardless of the color of the back panel. Meizu apparently wants to contend this with a new color version of its Meizu 20 flagship.

As per the images shared by tipster Ice Universe, this new version of Meizu 20 (review) has white bezels around the front. While the images only show the front of the device, we can say it looks quite premium and stands out from the rest of the Android pack. Currently, there’s no official confirmation regarding the launch of this new color version.

We expect the handset to only undergo cosmetic changes and the specifications will likely remain the same. This means it will feature a 6.5-inch E6 AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. For photography, it may come equipped with a 50MP primary sensor, a 5MP macro unit, and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens. Powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, the device will be supported by a 4,700mAh battery with 67W fast charging.

Whatsapp beta redesigned context menu

However, with the latest WhatsApp version 2.23.11.4, a new context menu for messages has been spotted. The new design resembles the context menu found in the iOS app. It includes options such as Delete, Forward, Reply, and Info in a drop-down list, while emoji reactions still appear on top of the message.

It’s important to note that the new context menu is still under development and is only available to WhatsApp beta testers. This change suggests that WhatsApp aims to achieve design consistency across different operating systems and brings a modern touch to the app’s interface.

In addition to the context menu redesign, WhatsApp is introducing various new features. These include the Chat Lock feature for securing conversations, improved polling, flexible captioning in the latest updates, and multi-device support that allows users to use the same account on up to four phones. Realme GT Neo 5 SE Transformers color variant has nothing going for it

Yesterday, Realme teased that it will unveil a new color option for Realme GT Neo 5 SE in collaboration with the upcoming movie Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. This color variant is now official but unfortunately, there’s nothing special about it.

The new shade for the smartphone is officially called Holy White Phantom. This hue does not have anything to do with Transformers.

Realme GT Neo 5

The brand promotes this color with a short video cut from the movie’s trailer. The promo video showcases Autobot spy Mirage as a 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 – 964 in silver color with blue accents.

The color of the car and the phone do not match at all. The partnership appears to be a last-moment decision, so there’s no proper customization.

In addition to the new shade for Realme GT Neo 5 SE, the company has also announced a theme for all models designed after Transformers. This theme will be available for download on May 23 when the handset will be available for pre-order.

Realme Transformers Rise of the Beasts Theme

Regarding the price, the device in Holy White Phantom costs the same as the original two hues  — Final Fantasy and Polar Black. But it is not known whether it will be available in all four memory configurations or less.

Finally, some of the highlights of this smartphone include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 chipset, a 10-bit 1.5K 144Hz OLED display, a 64MP primary camera, a 5,500mAh battery, and 100W fast wired charging support. It competes with the Redmi Note 12 Turbo (Poco F5) in China and is yet to release in global markets.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra may launch for around $1,000

Talking about the design first, we have already covered leaked official images and even renders in the past. However, the latest leak now arrives from 91Mobiles and it confirms what we have already seen in the past. The Moto Razr 40 Ultra features a clamshell folding design similar to its other Razr series predecessors but with a larger cover display on the back. This external panel almost completely covers one half of the rear panel, with the two rear cameras also being housed alongside it.

Meanwhile, the primary display houses a punch hole selfie camera at the top. Thanks to a larger cover screen, users will be able to better take selfies when using just the rear cameras. Furthermore, the renders also show that the smartphone will be available in three color options namely Black, Blue, and Red. The leak further adds that the Razr 40 Ultra will reportedly cost around 1,000 US Dollars. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report so take this news with a pinch of salt.

The rear features a 32 megapixel primary and an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, while the front houses a 32 megapixel selfie camera. Lastly, the device will be powered by a 3,500mAh battery pack that supports 33W fast charging and runs on MyUX 5 out of the box.
