Apple plans to simplify the ‘Hey Siri’ command to just ‘Siri’

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is reportedly working on a significant change to Siri that would eliminate the need for the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase. Instead, users would only need to say “Siri” followed by a command. This change aims to bring Siri closer to Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, which can be activated simply by starting a command with “Alexa.”

Apple’s Siri Set to Drop ‘Hey Siri’ Trigger Phrase

The transition from a two-word trigger phrase to a single word poses technical challenges, as Siri would need to accurately interpret the singular phrase “Siri” across various accents and dialects. The current “Hey Siri” phrase increases the chances of the system correctly recognizing the trigger.

In addition to this trigger phrase change, Apple is also said to be working on deeper integrations of Siri with third-party apps and services. This integration would provide better assistance to users by leveraging additional contextual information.

Although the exact timeline is not confirmed, these changes to Siri are expected to roll out sometime in 2023 or 2024. It’s possible that Apple could announce this update alongside iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this summer. However, the event’s primary focus is anticipated to be on Apple’s mixed-reality headset, so the Siri trigger phrase change might not be the centerpiece of the event.

Rumors suggest that iOS 17 will bring improvements such as granular control over flashlight brightness, customizable Lock Screen options, a revamped Apple Music with more graphics, and the ability to customize and organize the App Library. A redesigned Control Center and the possibility of app sideloading are also speculated.

Microsoft Enhances Cloud Security Measures to Combat Malware Distribution

In a recent announcement, Microsoft has taken a significant step in bolstering the security of its cloud services, including OneDrive and SharePoint. The tech giant revealed that it will now scan password-protected Zip files uploaded or shared by users. This proactive measure aims to tackle the long-standing issue of cybercriminals exploiting archived documents for malware distribution. Previously, Microsoft’s scanning capabilities were limited to uncompressed files, allowing malicious actors to bypass detection by setting passwords. Security researcher Andrew Brandt shed light on this development, highlighting the potential of this enhanced security feature.

Encrypted ZIP files can now be scanned by Microsoft

Archived documents have long served as a conduit for malware distribution. Cybercriminals have frequently employed password-protected Zip files to obfuscate their malicious payloads. However, Microsoft’s recent move to scan encrypted Zip archives on SharePoint marks a significant stride in combating this nefarious practice. By deliberately compressing various malware samples into encrypted Zip files and uploading them to Microsoft cloud services, Brandt demonstrated that these files were promptly flagged as containing malware.

Microsoft Cloud

While Microsoft’s proactive scanning approach adds an extra layer of security, the company recognizes that some users may have concerns regarding privacy and data integrity. To address these concerns, users who prefer Microsoft not to scan encrypted files have alternatives at their disposal. They can opt for different compression formats, such as 7-Zip, or utilize encryption algorithms like AES-256. These options ensure that users have the flexibility to maintain control over their data while simultaneously safeguarding it from potential threats.

With its decision to scan password-protected Zip files, Microsoft has taken a commendable step forward in securing its cloud services against malware distribution. By proactively identifying and flagging encrypted files that may contain malicious payloads, the company aims to provide users with enhanced protection and peace of mind. While users can choose alternative compression formats or encryption algorithms to prevent scanning, Microsoft’s commitment to bolstering security demonstrates its dedication to the well-being of its customers. By actively staying ahead of cyber threats, Microsoft continues to pave the way for a safer and more secure cloud computing environment.

Microsoft gets approval from EU regulators to acquire Activision Blizzard

Microsoft’s bid to acquire video gaming giant Activision Blizzard for about $68.7 billion has been approved by regulators of the European Union. The development comes just weeks after the deal was blocked by the UK regulators.

The approval for the deal to proceed is contingent on Microsoft making concessions on access to cloud gaming. It requires the company to automatically grant a license for Activision Blizzard games to any competing cloud-based gaming service.

Microsoft Logo

The European Union regulators found that Microsoft “would have no incentive to refuse to distribute Activision’s games to Sony” and that “even if Microsoft did decide to withdraw Activision’s games from the PlayStation, this would not significantly harm competition in the consoles market.”

However, it found that the deal could harm competition around the distribution of PC and console games through cloud gaming services. As a remedy, Microsoft will need to offer free licenses to consumers in EU countries that would allow them to stream via “any cloud game streaming services of their choice.” This applies to all current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games that they have a license for.

Although Microsoft received approval from the EU, the deal remains doubtful because of UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which was blocked a few weeks back. The Redmond-based tech giant has said that it plans to aggressively appeal the UK decision. Regulators in South Africa, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Serbia, and Japan have approved the deal, while China, South Korea, New Zealand, and Australia are all still reviewing the deal.

James Webb Space Telescope Detects Water around a Main-belt Comet

In a groundbreaking revelation, the James Webb Space Telescope has achieved yet another major milestone, capturing the first-ever instance of water vapour around a comet in the main asteroid belt. This discovery challenges scientists’ previous assumptions about the distribution of water ice in the solar system and raises intriguing questions about the nature of these celestial bodies. With its powerful near-infrared camera, the Webb telescope is revolutionizing our understanding of comets and paving the way for further exploration.

This discovery proves that Main-belt Comets can preserve Water Ice

For years, researchers speculated that comets would predominantly contain water ice when situated in the Kuiper Belt or the Oort Cloud, regions far enough from the Sun to sustain frozen substances. However, the recent observation of water vapor around a main-belt comet has astounded the scientific community. This breakthrough, made possible by the James Webb Space Telescope, provides concrete evidence that comets in the main asteroid belt can indeed preserve water ice.

Comet

While the detection of water vapour is an astounding feat, the absence of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the observed comet, named Read, has presented scientists with a new enigma. Typically, CO2 accounts for around 10 per cent of the potentially vaporized material in comets. Webb’s instruments, however, did not detect any traces of CO2 in Read. Researchers postulate two possibilities: either the CO2 dissipated over billions of years, or Read formed in a unique region of the Solar System where CO2 was absent.

Read, one of the pioneering bodies categorized as a main-belt comet, played a crucial role in establishing this classification. Until now, the study of main belt comets has been limited by the lack of instrumentation capable of examining them in detail. However, the James Webb Space Telescope’s powerful capabilities have finally enabled researchers to delve deeper into the mysteries of these fascinating comets.

While the discovery of Read’s lack of Carbon Dioxide poses intriguing questions, further observations are essential to determine whether this peculiarity is exclusive to Read or common among main-belt comets. In either case, Stefanie Milam, a member of the research team, proposes a sample collection mission to gain deeper insights into comets like Read. Such a mission would prove far more feasible than exploring the distant Kuiper Belt or the Oort Cloud, which are considerably farther from the Sun. The James Webb Telescope also made some groundbreaking discoveries regarding the Fomalhaut Star System recently.

WhatsApp Introduces Chat Lock Feature to Secure Conversations

In an era where privacy is extremely valued, WhatsApp continues to strive for innovative ways to ensure the confidentiality of its users’ conversations. With a commitment to staying ahead of the game, WhatsApp recently unveil its latest feature: Chat Lock. This allows users to safeguard their most personal and intimate chats with an extra layer of security.

The Locked Chats are accessible through a Password or Biometric Authentication

The concept is simple yet powerful. By locking a chat, users can discreetly remove it from their main inbox and place it within a dedicated folder. Access to this folder is exclusively granted through the user’s device password or biometric authentication, such as a fingerprint. Furthermore, the contents of locked chats are automatically concealed in notifications, providing users with complete peace of mind.

WhatsApp

The Chat Lock feature is specifically designed to cater to individuals who occasionally lend their phones to family members or find themselves in situations where someone else temporarily holds their device. Imagine those instances when a message arrives just as someone else is holding your phone. With Chat Lock, you can trust that your private conversations remain hidden from prying eyes.

Enabling Chat Lock is quite easy. Simply tap on the name of the one-to-one or group chat you wish to secure, and select the lock option. To reveal your locked chats, slowly pull down on your inbox and enter your phone password or utilize your device’s biometric authentication.

WhatsApp’s commitment to user privacy doesn’t end here. In the coming months, the company plans to introduce additional options for Chat Lock. These upcoming enhancements will include the ability to lock chats on companion devices, ensuring a consistent and comprehensive security experience across multiple devices. Furthermore, users will have the freedom to create custom passwords for their chats, allowing for a unique and distinct password separate from their device’s login credentials. The Meta-owned company recently unveiled an ‘Edit Messages’ feature for their beta users as well, indicating that it is looking to significantly overhaul the application for its user base.
