Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Lacks Support for Seamless Updates

Samsung recently debuted the Galaxy S23 series. The company’s latest flagship smartphones offer almost everything you expect from a premium phone. However, they don’t come with a handy feature, which is even found on some budget handsets.

The feature we are talking about is seamless updates. For the unaware, this feature is currently available on almost all premium Android smartphones, except for phones from Samsung and a couple of other OEMs.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series

Back in October, Samsung officially confirmed that they are working on introducing seamless update functionality with the release of One UI 6.0. Hence, the Galaxy S23 series was not expected to arrive with this feature and the same has happened.

Either way, it’s a shame that Samsung is taking this long to introduce a useful feature. Almost all other major brands implemented it a while back.

For the unaware, phones with support for seamless updates need not remain shut down for a longer duration during the installation of a new software update. The OTA system update gets installed in the background on these handsets and they only require a simple reboot at the end.

As One UI 6.0 based on Android 14 is expected to release later this year, the next-gen Galaxy S series, which would be most likely called the Galaxy S24 series, may finally offer support for seamless updates since it will come pre-installed with the said version of One UI.

Apple iPhone 14 Models See Price Drops in China as a Part of Sales Push

In light of the ongoing global recession, the iPhone 14 models are seeing price drops in China, with reductions of up to 848 yuan (~$125) being offered to stabilize sales. This comes after Apple reported a decline in revenue during the December quarter due to the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain and weak demand in the world’s largest smartphone market in 2022.

Apple iPhones

Online retailers in China, such as JD.com, have marked down the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models by 800 yuan (~$118). With an additional 50 yuan (~$7.50) discount for members, these models are now available for 10.6% off the original price. This brings down the price of the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro by 848 yuan, down to 7150 yuan (~$1055).

Physical resellers have also jumped on the bandwagon, offering price cuts ranging from 630 yuan (~$93) to 725 yuan (~$107). Some of the most sought-after models have already sold out. For example, all iPhone 14 Pro models with 256GB or more storage were sold out at Suning outlets in Shenzhen shortly after the price cut was offered over the weekend.

Shenzhen retail chain Sundan also offered a 630 yuan (~$93) price reduction starting Sunday, but has now run out of stock for both the Pro and Pro Max models with max storage. The iPhone 14 Pro series runs on iOS 16 operating system and is powered by Apple A15 Bionic Hexa-core processor. It is packed with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1TB internal storage options.

However, the prices on Apple’s official website and brick-and-mortar stores in China have not changed as of Monday noon. This suggests that there is still a good level of inventory available, with online delivery or pickup options available.

OnePlus Ace 2 (11R) Features Sony IMX890 Primary Camera of OnePlus 11

OnePlus will be launching multiple devices tomorrow. The OnePlus 11 5G will make its global debut along with OnePlus Buds Pro 2. Chinese customers will be getting their hands on the OnePlus Pad tablet. The OnePlus Ace 2 smartphone will also make its Chinese debut, and the same device will be launched under the OnePlus 11R name for global customers.

So far, there has been a lot of buzz around the OnePlus Ace 2/11R as it is expected to provide a near-flagship experience with a considerably lower price tag compared to the OnePlus 11. The latest teaser from the brand proves just that as it reveals that the device has a 5OMP Sony IMX890 sensor onboard. For those unaware, this is the same sensor used in the primary camera of the OnePlus 11 which launched a month ago in China.

OnePlus

With the IMX890 sensor onboard, high-quality images are expected, including support for RAW photo shooting modes to retain maximum details for post-processing by the user. However, it is worth pointing out that the camera won’t be tuned by Hasselblad, meaning that it could differ in color accuracy and lack the Hasselblad mode available on the flagship. As the OnePlus Ace 2 is the same device as the OnePlus 11R, we can expect this sensor to also be present on the global version.

OnePlus 11R

Other than that, the brand has recently confirmed support for LPDDR5x RAM on the OnePlus Ace 2. The device will be available in 12GB and 16GB RAM options. According to previous reports, the OnePlus Ace 2 will feature a 6.74-inch OLED display with a curved design, offering a resolution of 1.5K and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The screen will have a built-in fingerprint sensor. It is expected to run on Android 13 OS with the ColorOS 13 interface.

Other than the 50MP IMX890 sensor that comes with OIS support, the device is expected to have a 12MP or 8MP ultra-wide camera, paired with a 2MP macro camera. The selfie camera will likely house a 16MP sensor. The hardware will be backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 100W fast charging support.

India Bans Over 200 Chinese Apps Over Data Privacy Concerns, Threatening Behaviors

The Indian government has taken swift action against a number of Chinese loan-lending and betting apps. After a thorough analysis of 288 Chinese apps, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) banned a total of 230 apps on an “urgent” and “emergency” basis. The decision was made based on recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs due to the potential access these apps had to the personal data of Indian citizens.

Smartphone

This happened after numerous reports of extortion and harassment towards individuals who had taken out small loans through these apps. In some cases, interest rates were increased by a shocking 3,000% annually. When debtors were unable to repay, they were subjected to threatening messages and even the release of morphed photos. Tragically, this led to a number of suicides in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

In response to these reports, various states and intelligence agencies called for action to be taken against these apps. 94 of the banned apps were found to be readily available on app stores, while others were being distributed through third-party links. The government has further issued an advisory, reminding citizens that betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country and advertisements for these betting platforms are also illegal under Consumer Protection Act 2019, Cable TV Network Regulation Act 1995, and the IT Rules, 2021.

This latest ban comes after previous actions taken against Chinese apps, including TikTok, Xender, and PUBG Mobile, which were deemed a threat to the sovereignty and security of India. The government imposed the ban under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, as servers in the hostile nation were receiving and using sensitive user data improperly.

Twitter Will Let Bots With “Good Content” Access Its API for Free

Elon Musk has taken to Twitter to announce that the platform will allow bots with “good content” to access its API for free. This represents a partial reversal of Twitter’s policy, which previously required developers to sign up for a paid tier to access the API. The move follows Twitter’s decision to put API access behind a paywall, after it shut down third-party clients like Tweetbot and Twitterrific. Elon had previously stated that the company will charge around $100 a month for bots to operate on Twitter, which was supposed to be a step towards having only ‘clean bots’ on the social media platform.

Twitter

The change was met with criticism from developers and Twitter users who rely on bots for a variety of purposes. Some bots, like ‘Make it a Quote’, are simply used for converting tweets to quote-style images, while bots like ‘Color Schemer’ suggest colors that go well together. Most bots serve entertainment purposes, while others like Pikaso, Remind Me of This Tweet, and Thread Reader offer useful functions such as screenshotting, tweet reminders, and thread reading, respectively. In light of Musk’s tweet, some developers have already announced that they will be shutting down their bots ahead of the February 9th deadline.

For Twitter, the new policy presents a money-making opportunity. The company already charges users $8 per month to stay verified and is reportedly seeking $1,000 per month from brands that want to keep their gold checkmarks. With a massive debt looming over the company, it seems like Twitter is exploring methods to monetize some sections of the platform.

However, a lot of questions remain to be answered regarding Musk’s announcement. It is unclear what qualifies as “good” content and “bad” content, or whether the policy will apply to existing or future bots. Until Twitter provides an official statement, the future of bots on the platform remains uncertain.

OnePlus Buds Pro 2 Indian Price Leaked Ahead of Tomorrow’s Launch

OnePlus is about to host a major launch event for its global customers tomorrow (Feb. 7). At this event, the company’s latest flagship called the OnePlus 11 5G will go global, a month after its launch in China. We will also see devices like the OnePlus 11R smartphone and OnePlus Buds Pro 2 break cover for the global market.

OnePlus Buds Pro 2

We have already reported on the expected Europen price of the OnePlus Buds Pro 2. Now, we bring you the leaked pricing of these earbuds for the Indian market. A Twitterati has shared a screenshot of what appears to be a Flipkart listing for the OnePlus Buds Pro 2. It reveals that the premium earbuds will cost ₹13,999 for Indians. Comparatively, the OnePlus Buds Pro was launched with a price tag of ₹9,999 back in 2021.

OnePlus

The price is significantly higher than the previous generation, however, it is to be expected considering that the Indian rupee has weakened compared to 2021. Nonetheless, it does foil the expectations of many fans who were expecting the earphones to launch near the Chinese price of RMB 899 (~₹10,900). On the flip side, OnePlus has slashed the price of the OnePlus Buds Pro in India by ₹1,000 ahead of the launch of its successor, so this might be the best time to get your hands on a pair.

OnePlus Buds Pro 2 specs

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 has a similar design to its predecessor. It has spatial audio, which will allow users to get a 3D audio experience. Additionally, the earbuds will feature a custom tuning for the veteran music composer Hans Zimmer who has composed soundtracks for popular Holywood movies such as Dune, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Dark Knight trilogy.

The OnePlus Buds are offered in Arbor Green and Black colors and feature 11mm dynamic and 6mm planar diaphragm drivers. They have Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and transparency modes. With ANC enabled, they offer 5.5 hours of playback and can be extended to 39 hours with the charging case. With ANC off, they offer up to 9 hours of playback. Fast charging support provides 3 hours of playback after just 10 minutes of charge.

India has the Third-Cheapest Mobile Data Rates Worldwide

Today, having access to the Internet is among the most important things. A world without the internet and modern technology are unimaginable to us. However, data rates are most likely one of the criteria that determine how much data you should use; cheaper data means more data usage. Anyway, a recent study was conducted to compile a list of the typical mobile data costs in various nations. The statistic shows the global average cost of 1GB of data. 233 nations and 5,292 mobile data plans are considered in the survey, which was undertaken by the UK-based pricing comparison website Cable.co.uk. India presently has the third-lowest data rate, according to the report.

According to a survey done by a UK-based website, there are significant differences in the global average mobile rates. The cheapest data rates are found in Israel, where 1GB of data typically costs just USD 0.04, while the most expensive rates are found on the island of Saint Helena, which is a British Overseas Territory, where 1GB of data on average costs USD 41.06. One GB of mobile internet data costs just INR 13.98 (about $0.17), making India one of the cheapest countries in the world. It is astounding to see the wide range of prices that different people are willing to pay for the same quantity of goods.

The prevalence of smartphones in India is very high, and in the past ten years, modern internet capabilities have greatly advanced. India is currently working to provide its users with the most recent 5G connectivity. Recently, major Indian metropolitan cities have been added to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel’s 5G network coverage. The price of the internet in the nation is determined by a number of factors. The costs of their tariff plans have lately increased by the Indian telecom companies. It is still one of the most economical internet services, though.

The report that the company released was undoubtedly fascinating. The data was interesting to examine and conduct an analysis on. Anyway, many thanks for reading this article all the way through. This finishes our section on nationwide mobile data tariffs. What do you consider the report to be? Would you pay if you were the one who needed to shell out the staggering $41 for a GB of data? Apple Watches are Confusing Skiing for Car Accidents

Smart devices are a marvel of modern technology, capable of tracking a variety of metrics with remarkable accuracy. However, this convenience sometimes comes at a cost. Take for example, the Apple Watch, which has been causing headaches for skiers. The software in the watch sometimes confuses a downhill ski trip for a car crash and automatically dials 911.

Apple Watch

This has become a real problem for the emergency services, who are inundated with false alarm calls, for the skiers, who are forced to deal with an annoying wrist companion, and for the software developers at Apple, who must tackle a difficult and complex issue. The system, which is designed to detect falls and collisions while driving, skiing, or snowboarding, will initiate a countdown that leads to an emergency services call. However, users may not always be able to react in time to alerts preceding the call and prevent it from being made.

According to a recent article in The New York Times, the emergency services department in Summit County, Colorado received 185 incorrect crash notifications between January 13 and 22. Apple has reportedly taken notice of this issue and is working to address it. A company spokesperson stated, “We are aware that in certain situations, these features may trigger emergency services even if a severe car crash or hard fall has not occurred.” Previously, the iPhone 14’s crash detection feature also caused a lot of turmoil for emergency services in Japan due to skiing accidents as well.

It’s worth noting that in some cases, the emergency alert features of the Apple Watch have worked as intended and alerted emergency services in actual emergencies. However, the story of a spin class leader whose watch mistakenly triggered an emergency alert highlights the potential for technology to both solve and create problems.
