Smartphone cameras continue to advance as software drives innovation in new directions

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in terms of photography capabilities compared to digital cameras. A webinar hosted by Counterpoint Research revealed that the imaging system continues steep advances as software drives innovation in a new direction. Honor, DXOMARK, Qualcomm, and Eugenio Recuenco were the guests of the webinar and it focused on various topics like smartphone camera trends, OEM imaging comparisons, and more.

Smartphone camera trends

The report states that at the upper end of the market flagship camera counts are flattening, focal lens lengths are been stretched and image processing demands are pushing chipset makers. Since 2019, the average number of camera counts per smartphone is below three. OEMs like Honor are adopting sophisticated computational photography techniques to keep up with the pace of advancement.

Beyond megapixels and camera counts, there is an increasing importance of software in camera systems. They offer features like multi-frame and multi-camera fusion techniques. Qualcomm VP says that software and algorithm-based photography means processing power is paramount for smartphone camera performance to deliver extreme image signal and neural processing.

DXOMARK’s Director says that Honor’s Magic4 Ultimate makes the best use of multi-camera fusion computational photography.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro tipped to feature Always On Display again

We have already reported on various reports related to the Apple iPhone 14 series recently. And now, the latest report has revealed an interesting feature that might be making its way to the iPhone 14 Pro models.

Apple

According to a 9To5Mac report, multiple codes were spotted on the iOS 16 Developer Beta, which hints at the iPhone 14 Pro featuring Always On Display. Furthermore, this is in line with one of our previous reports. Back in May 2022, we had reported on the iPhone 14 Pro series featuring Always On Display thanks to improved screen refresh rate. The initial report had hinted at the feature being possible thanks to lower variable fresh rate on the next gen ProMotion display.

The new report states that provisions for this feature was also spotted on the iOS 16 code. This includes three frameworks that could be used by iOS 16 to improve efficiency on the backlight on the iPhone 14 Pro’s display. Notably, similar framework is typically seen in smartphone that feature Always On Display. As per our previous report, the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max’s ProMotion display would be able to go as low as 1Hz refresh rate to help conserve battery life and enable Always On functionality.

Apple

While the iPhone 13 Pro series also featured ProMotion display with 120Hz refresh rate, its panel only supported as low as 10Hz refresh rate. Thus, it wasn’t suitable for the Always On Display feature. But an improved display would mean that the upcoming iPhones will offering this function and Apple is already working on bringing software support for it.

Apple iPhones to shift away from Lightning port as EU enforces USB-C as standard by 2024

While we have reported on Apple planning on shifting away from its Lightning port design in favor of the USB Type C standards, it appeared that this move would still be years away. But now, the company might have a set deadline due to a new standard being passed by the EU.

Apple

For those unaware, the iPhone 14 series was initially believed to feature USB Type C ports, however, recent reports suggested otherwise. But now, EU has announced that all smartphones, tablets, and even cameras are required to use the same connector, with the USB-C being the new standard. In other words, the Cupertino based giant will also have to comply with this rule.

The EU has set a deadline till 2024 to give OEMs time to make this shift. Android smartphone makers have mostly moved to this USB standard, however, Apple handsets still feature the Lightning port. Although, recent reports had also hinted at the iPhone 15 series possibly being the first iPhone to feature a USB Type C port. So, it seems that the brand is already ahead of this schedule, but this is still unconfirmed at the moment.

Apple

European nations have been trying to standardize the charging port for various consumer electronic products for a while now. Back in 2021, it was reported that the USB Type C will be mandated as the standard port for different kinds of device, and now, this has finally been made official. So we will have to wait and see if the next year’s iPhone actually makes the shift or not.

The OnePlus Nord N20 5G was launched in the United States a couple of weeks ago as an entry-level 5G smartphone. Priced at under $300, it is one of the cheapest 5G phones available in the US but it is currently being sold exclusively through T-Mobile and Metro.

With this new marketing partnership, the OnePlus brand will be exposed to a wide range of audiences, which could result in the company signing deals with other carriers in the country for expanding its presence.

Being an Offical Marketing Partner of UFC, the OnePlus brand will appear in key UFC assets, including broadcast features on select Pay-per-Views and custom and original content that will be distributed across official UFC social media, channels, and digital platforms.

The OnePlus Nord N20 5G features a 6.43-inch AMOLED display and comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 processor. It packs 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage with support for a microSD card slot to expand the storage capacity. It runs the Android operating system with OxygenOS on top and is powered by a 4,500mAh battery that comes with support for 33W fast charging.
