Netflix could launch ad-supported plan and password sharing fees this year

Netflix, one of the leading media streaming platforms globally, had long said that its service would not include advertisements, but that is about to change as the company recently said that it will roll out a cheaper ad-supported plan.

While the new plan was said to be rolled out over the next year or two, it appears that the company is planning to offer it sooner. In an internal memo, it is said that the ad-supported plan will be released later this year.

Netflix Logo

As per the report in The New York Times, the company’s executives have told in an internal note that the cheaper ad-supported plan will be rolled out in the last quarter of this year.

During the same timeframe, the company could also introduce extra fees for the subscribers who are sharing a password to their Netflix account with other people who do not reside at the same address.

It was noted in the memo that every major streaming platform apart from Apple TV+ offers a low-cost plan with advertisements, including Hulu, HBO Max, Peacock, and others.

The company recently revealed that there are more than 222 million households who are paid subscribers of Netflix but it also claimed that about 100 million households are using the service with someone else’s account.

Greg Peters, CFO of Netflix, said that the company isn’t trying to shut down password sharing but it is going to ask users to pay a bit more to share accounts. It’s noteworthy that the company is testing extra fees for account sharing in Peru, Chile, and Costa Rica.

These new developments for the streaming giant come after its subscriber numbers fell for the first time. The company reported that last quarter, it lost 200,000 members, mainly due to the shutdown of its business in Russia. It is also expecting to lose another two million users this quarter.

TikTok owner ByteDance Live-streaming device with a flip camera appears

Duoyin, also known as ByteDance, the company that owns Tiktok is perhaps trying to milk the popularity of the video-sharing platform both in China and overseas, going by its upcoming product. The company is said to have got a live-streaming gadget equipped with a flippable camera in the works and a render of the gadget has appeared online.ByteDance Livestreaming device

The product is known as Lingjing Live Streaming All-in-One Machine and has a more professional outlook than a mobile phone. It is foreseeable that TikTok creators will adopt this device for creating professional-looking content, but it is not very affordable. The gadget is said to carry a steep 15,800 yuan (~$2346) price tag.

The render of the product spotted on MyDrivers shows it adopts a vertical screen design similar to a mobile phone, which matches the Douyin live broadcast interface. It has a flippable camera on top similar to the camera design of the iconic OPPO Find N series. The camera design allows for adjustment within a 180-degree axis as desired.

The device packs a large display screen but the size is not known at this time. There are three control knobs right under the screen. The knobs are for the microphone, background sound, and volume controls. There is also a base on the back of the screen, which also functions as a speaker. It is unclear whether there is a built-in battery.

We hope to get more details about the ByteDance Live-streaming device in the coming days.

The January – March period recorded 37 million smartphone shipments, which is a 5 percent drop year-on-year during the same period last year.

The third COVID wave, supply shortages, and rising inflation were the reasons for low shipment levels. Offline shipment channels also fell 13 percent YoY basis. Due to increased prices of new and existing devices, the average selling price (ASP) also rose to an all-time high of Rs 17,000 ($221) for the fourth consecutive quarter.

As per the report, Xiaomi led the smartphone shipments with 8.5 million units and a 23.3 percent market share. Samsung came second with 7 million units, whereas Realme and Vivo bagged third and fourth spots with 6 and 5.5 million shipments, respectively. OPPO completed the top five list with 3.5 million shipments. Barring Realme, all four brands had a negative year-on-year change in shipments for Q1 2022.

Only Realme managed to clock yearly growth in India during the period, with a 46.3 percent rise compared to Q1 2021.

Xiaomi dominated the online channels with a 32 percent share. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series witnessed a strong demand. The South Korean brand maintained its lead in the 5G segment with a 29 percent share, thanks to the Galaxy M32 and Galaxy A22. Realme stuck to the second position in the online space driven by affordable C-series smartphones. Meanwhile, Vivo led the offline channel with a 24 percent share. IDC expects the brand’s online shipments to improve with new T-series smartphones and devices under the iQOO brand.

As per the IDC report, shipments in the sub-$200 (~Rs 15,000) price bracket dropped by 16 percent however, the mid-range segment between $200-$300 (~Rs 15,000-Rs 23,000) grew by 18 percent. OPPO Reno 8 design tipped again, may look like OnePlus 10 Pro

Several reports have revealed that the OPPO Reno 8 will be announced this month in May. Reliable tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed the names of the chipsets that will be powering the three Reno 8 series smartphones. He also talked about important details about the design language of the Reno 8 line.

OPPO Reno 8 SE, Reno 8, and Reno 8 Pro

It appears that the Reno 8 lineup will have three models: the Reno 8 SE, Reno 8, and Reno 8 Pro. One of the recent Weibo posts by DCS revealed that these phones could be powered by the Dimensity 1300, the upcoming Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, and Dimensity 8100, respectively.

Alleged render of the OPPO Reno 8

The Reno 8 Pro’s Dimensity 8100 chip will be coupled with the MariSilicon X NPU. However, the other specs of the Pro model are under wraps. Speculations are rife that the Reno 8 will be arriving with a 6.5-inch AMOLED FHD+ 120Hz screen, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, Android 12 OS with ColorOS UI, and a 4,500mAh battery with 80W fast charging support. It will feature a 50-megapixel (main) + 8-megapixel (ultrawide) + 2-megapixel (macro/depth) triple camera unit.  There is no information on the specs of the Reno 8 SE.

OPPO Reno 8 series design

According to the tipster, the display of the Reno 8 series will have a top-left / center single punch-hole design. This indicates that the Pro model may feature a centrally aligned punch-hole. The rear side of the Reno 8 lineup will sport a design similar to the OnePlus 10 Pro. Shown above is a Reno 8 render that the tipster shared last month.

The Reno 8 series is expected to be released in global markets in June. The lineup is likely to include the Reno 8 Lite, Reno 8, and Reno 8 Pro. The Lite model appears to be a rebranded version of the OPPO F21 Pro 5G / Reno 7 Lite 5G / Reno7 Z 5G / OnePlus N20 5G. It remains to be seen whether the Reno 8 and Reno 8 Pro that will be released in China are the same ones that will be released in other markets.

Apple iPhone 15 models to reportedly get rid of notch for pill-and-hole cutout

Apple is gearing up to launch the upcoming iPhone 14 series smartphones in which the Pro models will come with a revamped design that will see the company adopting the pill-and-hole cutout for the front-facing camera.

Now, a new report coming from analyst Ross Young claims that Apple will fully adopt the new pill-and-hole cutout design for the front panel of next year’s Apple iPhone 15 series.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

If the report is to be believed, then unlike this year’s iPhone 14 lineup, the new design won’t be limited to Pro models, but all the models in the iPhone 15 series will have pill-and-hole cutout instead of a notch. The non-Pro iPhone 14 models launching this year will continue to have a notch on top of the screen.

In the new design of the phone’s front panel, the pill-shaped cutout is for the Face ID sensors, while the hole is for housing the front-facing camera.

Eventually, the Cupertino-based technology giant will move the Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera lens under the display. As per the report, if everything goes according to the company’s plan, then the move to shift components under the screen could start happening with iPhone 16 models coming in 2024.

The Apple iPhone 14 series, which will have four models, will be the first in the lineup to have significantly different specifications and features for the non-Pro and Pro versions.

Design

The Redmi K50 is the handset of the trio with the best build quality. It is the only one equipped with a glass back and a front glass protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, and it is even the only one to sport the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash resistant. The OnePlus 10R is the one with the most original design, while the Realme GT Neo3 is the most sportive and gaming-centric one in terms of aesthetics, but the OnePlus and Realme flagship killers are made of plastic and do not provide the users with any certification against dust and water.

Display

The Redmi K50 features the most impressive display, at least on the paper. It has a higher Quad HD+ resolution with 1440 x 3200 pixels, it comes with the Dolby Vision support, and it is able to provide a higher level of detail. The Redmi K50 has an OLED panel with a 6.67-inch diagonal, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The OnePlus 10R and the Realme GT Neo3 come with the same display sporting a lower Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and no Dolby Vision, but they are able to show up to one billion colors. Further, note that the OnePlus and Realme handsets, come with an in-display fingerprint reader, while the Xiaomi one has a side-mounted biometric sensor, placed on the power key.

Specs & Software

The hardware departments of these two devices are the same: they are powered by the Dimensity 8100 mobile platform by Mediatek, built at 5 nm and running at a max frequency of 2.85 GHz. The chipset is paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. They run Android 12 out of the box but are customized by different user interfaces: the Redmi K50 comes with MIUI 13, the OnePlus 10R has OxygenOS 12, and the Realme GT Neo3 has Realme UI 3.0.

Camera

The camera setups of the Realme GT Neo3 and the OnePlus 10R are exactly the same and they are superior if compared to the one found on the Redmi K50. They sport a 50 MP main camera (a Sony IMX766 sensor with OIS), an 8 MP ultrawide lens, a 2 MP macro camera, and a 16 MP selfie snapper. With the Redmi K50, you get a 48 MP main camera with OIS, an 8 MP ultrawide sensor, a 2 MP macro lens, and a 20 MP selfie shooter.

Battery

The Redmi K50 provides a longer battery life thanks to a bigger 5500 mAh battery, while Realme GT Neo3 and OnePlus 10R feature faster charging with a power of up to 150W.

Price

Redmi K50 is expected to hit India with a €350/$369 price tag, Realme GT Neo3 begins at $478/€454, and the OnePlus 10R costs €480/$505 in its base variant. While the OnePlus 10R and the Realme GT Neo3 feature better cameras and faster charging, the Redmi K50 has a bigger battery: which one would you pick?
