Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 is set to dominate Foldable smartphone market in 2021

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has released the latest Quarterly Foldable/Rollable Display Shipment and Technology Report. According to DSCC (via Phonearena), a whopping 819,000 foldable smartphones were sold in Q2, 2021, which is up 147% on a sequential basis but a mere 0.3% year-over-year. Well, these numbers clearly hint at how good Q3 figures are going to look like. Behind all of this will be Samsung sitting comfortably at the helm of this segment.

Source: Phonearena

For Q3, sequential growth is expected to be as high as 215% quarterly and a massive 480% annually to 2.6 million units. For Q4, as per the forecast, sequential growth should be at 46% with a 450% growth rate on an annual basis.

From what it appears, the foldable market will only swell further with more players coming into the picture starting next year. Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, Google, and Honor are the big names that have foldable smartphones lined up in their inventories. Even though there’s a scarcity of chips, that’s hardly impacting the launch plans of these OEMs.

DSCC CEO Ross Young believes the spike in the foldable segment is due to Samsung’s aggressive marketing of a feature-loaded innovation tagged at a lower price. Samsung has placed Galaxy Z Flip3 at $999 and Galaxy Z Fold3 at $1,799 both of which are one of the finest products available in the market with water-proofing and a bunch of other exciting new additions. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first foldable device with pen input and an under-panel camera. These alluring devices have been able to draw a lot of attention, thanks to Samsung’s concentrated advertisements and marketing.

Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 frame
DSCC is expecting a 232% hike in foldable smartphone shipments in 2021 that makes a total of 7.5 million foldable devices, which is up by 35% of DSCC’s earlier prediction The research firm further increased its 2022 forecast by 20% and expect annual gains to stand at 112%. By 2026, as demand increases and prices get normalized, DSCC forecasts 51 million of these smartphones to be shipped across the globe.

The firm concludes that Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 will be the undisputed king in the foldable market this year with an 83.9% market share, followed by Huawei with a small 10% portion.

Google Pixel 6 Pro more specifications confirmed ahead of the launch

After the launch of new Apple products, the next most exciting thing for enthusiasts would be the Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launch. Google is all set to introduce new members to the Pixel lineup later this fall. The major highlight is going to be Google’s first-ever ultra-premium flagship device, Pixel 6 Pro. While there’s some information that Google has already shared with the public, a lot still remains to be seen. Among the custom-made Pixel-specific Tensor chipset and high-resolution display, expect more flagship-level additions to be there this time.

Google Pixel 6 Pro

The Pixel 6 Pro will feature some industry-leading features such as a high-resolution and high refresh rate display, a periscope zoom camera with Samsung‘s 50MP GN1 sensor, a sleek design with, of course, the latest Android 12, and a lot more.

It has been confirmed by XDA that the Pixel 6 duo is not going to support Active Edge. This means Google Assistant can’t be activated upon squeezing the sides. There’s, however, the option of double-tapping on the back of the device to wake up the assistance. As for the reverse wireless charging feature, the leaker confirms it will be there.

Arriving equipped with a high-resolution display wasn’t a hidden fact but what makes it more alluring is the support of 120Hz and the ability to work with 1440p resolution. The native resolution of the panel is 3120 x 1440 but we are yet to find if this allows a variable refresh rate.

The Pixel 6 Pro comes with a digital car key application pre-installed on the device, which can unlock your car either using NFC or UWB (ultra-wideband). UWB is a short-range wireless communication protocol that makes precise tracking of the location of nearby objects more efficient.

Google is confirmed to use a 5G modem from Samsung in the Pixel 6 series, where firmware analysis hints the modem to be linked to Samsung Exynos 5123. XDA further claims to have confirmed the SoC configuration and shares that it comes in a 2x2x4 configuration consisting of 2 cores at 2.80GHz, 2 cores at 2.25GHz, and 4 cores at 1.80GHz. The device will pack a 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and the GPU will be Mali-G78 clocked up to 848 MHz, as already leaked by Google.

Google-Pixel-6-camera

The device will have a triple rear camera module with a 50MP GN1 image sensor as the primary lens, a wide-angle lens with Sony’s 12MP IMX386 image sensor as the secondary camera, and lastly, a telephoto camera with Sony’s 48MP IMX586 sensor that supports 4X optical zoom. On the front, there will be a single-hole-punch camera placed at the top middle and is expected to be Sony’s 12MP IMX663 sensor.

The Pixel 6 Pro will house a 5000mAh battery, Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz Wi-Fi) support, an optical under-display fingerprint scanner, and the Cirrus Logic CS35L41 amp. Also, the rumors of Google providing 5 years of security updates may just be true as Pixel 6 Pro is based on Linux kernel version 5.10 that will have support till 2026.

The launch date is still unknown but we hope Google will announce that in the coming days.

There is no way Google Pixel 5a 5G can compete with the OnePlus Nord 2 5G in terms of hardware department: the Nord 2 5G is simply more powerful thanks to its better chipset. We are talking about the Dimensity 1200 by MediaTek that is a flagship SoC, while the Pixel 5a 5G has a midrange Snapdragon 765G. Further, you get more RAM with the OnePlus Nord 2 5G: up to 12 GB instead of just 6 GB, and up to 256 GB of internal storage. The Google Pixel 5a 5G offers faster updates as it is a Google phone and Google develops the Android operating system, so it will get the new Android versions way before the Nord 2 5G.

Camera

The OnePlus Nord 2 5G and the Google Pixel 5a 5G are more or less at the same level if we talk about camera performance, even though they have totally different camera departments. Both have a great main sensor: 50 MP with OIS on the former and 12.2 MP f/1.7 with OIS on the latter. Google Pixel 5a 5G has a better ultrawide camera with a 16 MP resolution, while the OnePlus Nord 2 5G has a better 32 MP front camera.

Battery

The Google Pixel 5a 5G is the Google phone with the biggest battery ever, with a capacity of 4680 mAh. The battery is 180 mAh bigger than the one found on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G, which sports a 4500 mAh unit. That is the reason why it should last more on a single charge. However, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is a clear winner when it comes to charging speeds: it features 65W fast charging, while Pixel 5a 5G has a power of just 18W, just like entry-level phones.

Price

Google Pixel 5a 5G carries a $449 price tag in the U.S. while you need €399 to purchase the OnePlus Nord 2 5G in Europe. There is not a clear winner of this comparison: on the paper, OnePlus Nord 2 5G has better specifications, but with Pixel 5a 5G you get a higher build quality and faster software updates, as well as a bigger battery.

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini bring smaller notches, diagonal cameras, and big upgrades in performance

After months of leaks and rumors, the iPhone 13 series is now official. The new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini have a slightly refreshed design, but the main upgrades are under the hood.

iPhone 13 featured

Apple is sticking to the flat-edge frame of the iPhone 12 series. The design changes include a smaller notch that still manages to fit all of the sensors required for Face ID, and rear cameras that are now arranged diagonally.

The iPhone 13 Mini has a 5.4-inch screen while the iPhone 13 packs a 6.1-inch screen. The Super Retina Display on both phones is protected by Ceramic Shield. Both phones are available in Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and (Product) RED.

iPhone 13 display

Under the hood of the new iPhone 13 duo is the Apple A15 Bionic. The 5nm chip has a six-core CPU (2x high-performance cores + 4x high-efficiency cores). Apple says the CPU is 50% faster than the competition while the GPU is 30% faster. There is no mention of the RAM, which is typical of Apple, but the storage capacity now starts at 128GB and goes up to 512GB.

There are still two cameras on the rear of the iPhone 13 duo but they are now arranged diagonally. There is a new wide-angle camera that captures up to 47% more light. The ultrawide angle camera also captures more details in low light. Apple has also brought the sensor-shift optical image stabilization feature from the pro models to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini.

iPhone 13 Mini cameras

There are new and interesting camera features too. Top of the list is Cinematic Mode that holds the focus on a subject and automatically switches it to a new prominent subject that has entered into the scene just like in a movie. Users will also be able to adjust the bokeh effect after shooting. Other features are Night mode, Portrait mode, Deep Fusion, and Smart HDR 4 which recognizes up to four different people in a scene and optimizes the contrast, lighting, and skin tones for each person. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini also get the Photographic Styles feature we mentioned in the iPhone 13 Pro article.

The battery life on both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini has gotten a boost. The former now has up to 2.5 hours more while the mini model gets up to 1.5 hours of additional battery life. The new iPhone 13 series supports 20W fast wired charging, 15W MagSafe wireless charging, and 7.5W Qi wireless charging.

Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max launch with 120Hz displays, upgraded cameras, and boosted battery life

Apple announced new iPhones today, four models, just like last year’s iPhone 12 series. While all the new iPhone 13 models bring new features, it is the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max that comes with a feature Apple fans have longed for – a display with a high refresh rate.

iPhone 13 Pro featured

The new iPhone 13 Pro models have a 120Hz ProMotion display that adjusts between 10Hz and 120Hz but their screen sizes have remained unchanged from last year’s models. So you have a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display on the iPhone 13 Pro while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen. Just like the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13, the pro models also feature slightly smaller notches. They are also protected by a sheet of Ceramic Shield which Apple claims is tougher than any smartphone glass.

The Apple A15 Bionic chipset is inside the two phones and it brings upgrades in the CPU and GPU department. Apple didn’t waste the chance to say that competitors are still playing catch up, even with its older chipsets.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max boast significant upgrades in the camera department. There is a new 12MP f/1.8 ultrawide angle camera with a 120° field of view, and just like we have seen on some Android phones, this sensor can also shoot macro photos (at 2 cm) but Apple doesn’t stop there. It can also record macro videos including in slow motion and time-lapse mode. This sensor also captures up to 92% more light than before.

iPhone 13 Pro cameras

There is also a 12MP f/2.8 telephoto camera that brings 3x optical zoom  (6x optical zoom range across the system) and 15x digital zoom. This sensor also joins the ultrawide angle camera and the wide-angle camera in being able to shoot in Night Mode. The 12MP f/1.5 wide camera has the largest sensor, capturing 2.2x more light on an iPhone and it takes advantage of the LiDAR Scanner when shooting in Night Mode.

Apple has added new video shooting features such as Cinematic Mode that change the focus when recording a video. Users will be able to choose, adjust the level of bokeh, and even lock which objects the camera should focus on. However, there is also an automatic mode that shifts the focus when a person enters the frame or looks away from the camera. This feature will be available on the front TrueDepth camera and the rear wide and telephoto cameras.

Another interesting feature is Photographic Styles which applies your own preferred shooting style (tone and warmth) to your photos but doesn’t change the skies and skin tones.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max still have a lightning connector like their siblings. However, the battery life is better now – an extra 2.5 hours more on the Pro Max and 1.5 hours more on the Pro. Wired charging is still capped at 20W while MagSafe wireless charging is 15W. You can still use a Qi wireless charger but it is slower as it charges at up to 7.5W.

The iPhone 13 Pro models will be available in Sierra Blue, Silver, Gold, and Graphite. They will also be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants. Below are their prices:

iPhone 13 Pro                                                 iPhone 13 Pro Max

128GB – $999                                                  128GB – $1099

256GB – $1099                                                128GB – $1199

512GB – $1299                                                128GB – $1399

1TB – $1499                                                    1TB – $1599

They will be available for pre-order starting this Friday and will be available for purchase on September 24.

New 9th Gen iPad starts at $329 with an A13 chip and better cameras; iPad Mini tags along with a new design, USB-C, and 5G

Apple kicked off its September with the launch of the 9th Gen iPad and the new iPad Mini. Both tablets pack new features such as a faster chipset, better cameras, and the new iPadOS 15.

9th Gen iPad

9th Gen iPad

The new iPad has a 10.2-inch Retina display with similar-sized bezels as its predecessor. Since the bezels have not been cut down, it still features Touch ID on the bottom bezel. A new feature that has been added is True Tone which automatically adjusts the color temperature based on surrounding light.

The big upgrade is the new A13 chipset which Apple claims brings a 20% increase in CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine performance. The base model now comes with double the storage, so you get 64GB instead of 32GB.

Another big upgrade is the camera department. The front-facing camera is a new 12MP sensor with Center Stage, the feature that arrived on the iPad Pro last year that digitally pans the camera when making video calls. The rear camera is an 8MP sensor.

iPadOS 15

The 9th gen iPad is compatible with the 1st Gen Apple Pencil as well as the Apple Smart Keyboard. It will run iPadOS 15 out of the box.

The new iPad starts at $329 but can be purchased for $299 if you are a student.  It will be available in two colors – Silver and Space Gray – and will be available for pre-order today.

iPad Mini

Apple also announced a new iPad Mini. The new tablet has a revamped design, boasting slimmer bezels and a larger display, as well as new features such as a USB-C port, and 5G support.

The new iPad Mini has an 8.3-inch screen, a significant bump from the 7.9-inch screen of the last generation model. However, the slimmer bezels mean it is still comfortable to hold. By the way, this is a Liquid Retina Display and not Mini LED as rumored. Because the bezels are slimmer now, Touch ID now has a new home – the power button.

Apple has also upgraded the cameras of the iPad Mini. The front-facing camera is a 12MP ultrawide sensor with Center Stage. There is also a 12MP f/1.8 sensor with focus pixels on the rear that can record in 4K. Apple didn’t say the processor inside the new tablet but claims that CPU performance has been improved by 40% while GPU performance has gotten better by 80%.

iPad Mini USB-C

The iPad Mini has support for 5G and Wi-Fi 6. It also has a USB-C port at the bottom and thus can be connected to a wider range of devices now. Apple says it supports the second-generation Apple Pencil which can magnetically attach to its side. It also features stereo speakers in landscape position.

iPad Mini colors

Apple has put a price tag of $499 on the new iPad Mini and it will be available next week in four colors.
