OPPO R17 could be the mysterious OPPO phone at TENAA

New OPPO phones labelled as PBCM00 and PBCT00 have surfaced on the website of TENAA, the regulatory body of China. The TENAA listings of these devices have revealed that they share the same identical design and they are also packed with same-sized display and battery. This indicates that these could be the two variants of an upcoming OPPO phone. It is speculated that the newly spotted PBCM00 / PBCT00 may belong to the rumored R17 series.

The mysterious OPPO PBCM00 / PBCT00 smartphone measures 156.7 x 74 x 7.9mm and it features a 6.3-inch display. The handset is backed by a 3,415mAh battery.

It is difficult to deduce whether the frontside of the phone features a notch or not. The rear image of the smartphone reveals that it is fitted with a horizontally arranged dual camera setup. There is no fingerprint scanner on the backside of the phone. The color gradient rear of the phone suggests that it could be a high-end smartphone.

A recent report had revealed that OPPO has started teasing the R17 smartphone in China. This suggests that the Chinese manufacturer may launch R17 and R17 Pro as successor editions of the OPPO R15 and R15 Pro (aka Dream Mirror Edition smartphone that was unveiled earlier this year. The dimensions of the PBCM00 / PBCT00 is very similar to R15 Pro that measures 156.5 x 75.2 x 8mm. The R15 Pro is packed with a 6.28-inch AMOLED display and 3,430mAh battery. Hence, it seems that PBCM00 / PBCT00 OPPO phone could be the upcoming R17 series.

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play: Specs Comparison

Even though there are consistent differences between their hardware sides, they can both be bought at similar prices.

But which one is worth buying? This Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play comparison will try to shed some light for you.

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play: Design

If the design is important for you, then you should definitely evaluate other choices. Xiaomi Mi A2 and Huawei Honor Play do not have the best aesthetics out there. They are classic metal unibody devices just like most of the mid-rangers released in the last couple of years. But the notch of the Honor Play is an added value making its bezels very narrow and its front panel beautiful. Huawei Honor Play has a definitely more interesting design thanks to its notch and, even though it has a bigger display, it features smaller dimensions.

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play: Display

Honor Play has a wider display, so if you are an advanced user who plans to read much, play games and browse your documents through your smartphone, then you should go for it. But thanks to its LTPS technology, Xiaomi Mi A2 should provide a better viewing quality and a better visibility in most of the scenarios. Note that Honor Play has a notch while its opponent has not, but in this case, it is up to your taste to decide, and we will not pick a winner. Do you prefer a wider but notched display with a higher screen-to-body ratio or a smaller but notchless one with a potentially better viewing quality?

Hardware & Software

When it comes to hardware there is an important gap between these two phones. Huawei Honor Play has been projected with performance in mind and it is a flagship phone. It has the best hardware ever implemented by Huawei on a smartphone, including the octa-core Kirin 970 chipset and 6 GB of RAM. And it is also very optimized in the software as it boasts the new GPU Turbo technology able to increase graphics performance by up to 60% while reducing energy consumption by up to 30%. So, this is also an awesome phone for gaming (that is why it is called Honor Play). Xiaomi Mi A2 is just an upper-midrange handset with Snapdragon 660, but even this phone can reach high-end performance thanks to the powerful SoC paired with the stock and lightweight Android One. Note that the Mi A2 will surely win in terms of updates as it is supported directly by Google with fast and constant long-term updates. But Honor Play is the winner in terms of sheer hardware and performance.

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play: Camera

While Honor Play provides better hardware performance, Xiaomi Mi A2 is a way superior phone when it comes to photo quality. It has a 12 + 20 MP dual camera with a very bright f/1.8 aperture. It is one of the best camera phones in the mid-range sector and it can shoot photos with a low level of noise even in dark environments. The selfie camera is impressive as well with a huge 20 MP resolution. Honor Play is a good camera phone, but it has an average camera performance when it comes to the dual rear setup. The selfie camera is above-average and more or less at the same level as its opponent, but it is not enough to beat it.

Battery

At last, there is battery life. Huawei Honor Play dominates under this aspect as it features a way bigger battery with a capacity of 3750 mAh. Also, its GPU Turbo technology is able to lower energy consumption by up to 30 percent in the most advanced uses, and it allows the battery to last much more while playing games and using heavy apps which require graphics. Xiaomi Mi A2 charges faster thanks to its Quick Charge 3.0 technology and its lower capacity, but Honor Play is definitely a better battery phone.

Xiaomi Mi A2 vs Honor Play: Price

Xiaomi Mi A2 is a bit more affordable than the Huawei Honor Play. It costs €249/$291 in the most entry-level variant, while Honor Play is priced €266/$312. Given that there is not a noticeable difference in prices, due to its impressive specs, we find Honor Play as the winner of the comparison but note that Mi A2 is a better camera phone.

So which one would you pick among these two?

Huawei to increase its annual R&D budget to between $15 billion and $20 billion

Huawei in early 2017 promised to invest between $10 billion to $20 billion annually on R&D. At the end of last year, the Chinese manufacturing giant revealed it spent $13.23 billion(CNY 89.7 billion) in R&D which accounted for 14.9 percent of its total revenue. Due to its quest to be a global leader in 5G technology, the Chinese company has pledged to increase its investment in research and development (R&D) to between $15 billion and $20 billion.huawei-store logo

US companies Amazon and Alphabet (Google) are the two biggest spenders when it comes to R&D, and the reports from financial data company show that both companies spent $22.6 billion and $16.6 billion, respectively On R&D. Huawei has been one of the top spenders, and with this recent release is getting close to being very close to the number one position. The company also published on Thursday, stating that 20-30 percent of that amount would be dedicated to basic science research which is higher than the previous expectation of 10 percent.

The United States, Australia, and Britain have been pushing back against Huawei’s network communications technology on the bases of security grounds. It is believed that this scenario prompted Huawei to increase its spending on R&D. Last week, a UK government report said technical and supply-chain issues with Huawei’s network equipment exposed Britain’s telecom networks to security risks, reversing a previous endorsement. When it comes to 5G worldwide network, Chinese companies led by Huawei are estimated to own about 10 percent of the essential patents. This is on the high side if compared to their share in the 4G and 3G eras. But that underscores the company’s drive and investment in research and development. With an increase n its R&D spending, we expect to see more leading technologies from the Chinese giant.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 design leak suggests reduced chin, popup camera

Just as Xiaomi had launched the Mi MIX 2 in September 2017, Mi fans are now speculating that the Mi MIX 3 flagship phone may get unveiled in the same month this year. The Mi MIX 2S that was unveiled earlier this year includes upgraded specs but sports the same design as the Mi MIX 2. Hence, the Mi MIX 3 arriving later this year is expected to feature a better design along with improved specs. All the Mi MIX smartphones that have released so far have slightly thick chin compared to the other bezels since they feature front-facing camera. Rumors are rife that the Mi MIX 3 will be featuring a slimmer chin as it will be arriving with a pop-up selfie camera like the Vivo NEX. Some users in China who have installed MIUI 10 on their devices have come across an image of a Xiaomi smartphone inside the ROM. The handset can be seen with an exclusive AI button on its left side. Since the Chinese manufacturer has never used the design on its phone before, it is now being speculated that the Mi MIX 3 may arrive with the same appearance.

Apart from the dedicated AI button, the above image shows that the handset features a very reduce chin. It appears that Xiaomi has deleted the image as is it is no longer present inside MIUI 10. Since the image is missing, Mi fans have become all the more curious that the image have really leaked the design of the upcoming Mi MIX 3.

Oppo Find X breaks in bend test

Various tech publications have praised the OPPO Find X for its marvelous design that features Gorilla Glass 5 front and rear panels. The handset is equipped with innovative features like huge notch-less display and motorized camera assembly. Unfortunately, the Find X has failed the bend test by JerryRigEverything. It has been also found that the motorized camera assembly that not only houses the front camera but also the dual camera is one of the weakest parts of the Find X. The malfunctioning of the motorized top section also means that the phone will fail to authenticate the 3D biometric face unlocking.

JerryRigEverything begins the durability tests on OPPO Find X by showing how shaky the motorized setup is. It does not seem to be as stable as the pop-up front camera mechanism on the Vivo NEX. The upper portion wiggles a bit which means there is a space inside that can easily accumulate dust participles. If foreign objects get inside, it can affect the proper functioning of the motorized setup.

In the scratch test, the Gorilla Glass 5 layer of the Find X developed marks at level 6 of Mohs scale of hardness. Deeper grooves can be seen at level 7. The side of the phone including the buttons are made out of metal. The rear panel is also scratch-resistant as it features Gorilla Glass 5.

The front facing camera and the sensors for 3D facial recognition that are available on the frontside of the motorized assembly are also protected by toughened glass. Since the OPPO Find X is equipped with 3D facial recognition feature, it does not feature a fingerprint scanner. In the burn test, the 6.4-inch AMOLED display of the Find X developed a white burn mark and it never recovered.

Oppo Find X Bend Test Oppo Find X Bend Test

When pressure was applied from the backside of the Find X, it kept on bending which suggested that the phone could break easily with more force. When pressure was exerted from the front, the rigid and brittle AMOLED display could not handle the flexing and cracked in few seconds. Bending more from the front and rear caused the glass panels on both sides to develop cracks. The lack of stronger metal frame caused the phone to break easily.

Zack Nelson, the voice behind the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel claims that 90 percent of the smartphones that he has tested could easily pass the same bend test that was used on Find X. He added that the OPPO Find X is not designed to handle abuses. Accidentally sitting or stepping on the Find X can cause damage to it.

HMD Global is looking to strengthen its position in the U.S. market

HMD Global revived the Nokia brand and has managed to make a mark in the smartphone market, thanks to the combination of brand recall and value-for-money offerings, especially in the Chinese market.

The Finnish company has a strong presence in Asia and has also entered the U.S. market. Nokia smartphones are available for purchase in the United States but not through network carriers.

HMD Global Logo

While there is no indication that the network operators will carry HMD Global’s Nokia smartphones, the company seems to be determined to strengthen and expand its presence in the United States. According to the company’s job listings on Linked, the company is looking for e-commerce lead, product lead, and technical account manager in the U.S.

However, the company has not yet announced any plans related to the U.S. market. Once those positions are filled up, we expect to get more information related to the company’s strategy in the United States and its plan moving forward.

Even if the company establishes it’s own e-commerce store in the United States, it will be difficult to compete with the dominating players such as Samsung and Apple as well against established players like LG and Motorola, without the support of network operators.

Huawei recently tried to enter the U.S. with a carrier partnership with AT&T for its Mate 10 Pro smartphone. But just days before the official launch, the partnership was canceled due to the several security-related issues from the U.S. government.

Huawei to beat Samsung by launching world’s first foldable smartphone

Samsung has been working on its first foldable smartphone since 2013. After overcoming various technical glitches, the South Korean company is speculated to launch it in Q1 2019. However, fresh information reveals that Huawei may beat Samsung by launching the world’s first foldable phone by early 2019.

A recent report had revealed that Huawei has partnered with China’s BOE Technology Group for supplying it with flexible OLED display for its premium foldable smartphone. New information reveals that the first batch of foldable phone by Huawei will include small number of units in a bid to beat Samsung. An unnamed person who is familiar with the plans of Huawei has said that the company will be manufacturing around 20,000 to 30,000 units or even less for the initial buyers and to attract the attention of the industry and media.

Jeff Pu an analyst with Yuanta Investing Consulting has said that the Huawei’s first foldable phone will be hitting the market “very early 2019.” BOE Technology Group is an industry leader in manufacturing LCD panels. VLC media player no longer available for Huawei devices to avoid negative reviews

VideoLAN’s VLC media player is a very popular, free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and others. The app for Android devices is available on the Play Store for download but if you own a new Huawei smartphone, the app won’t be available on the Play store for you. That is because VideoLAN has announced on Twitter that it is blacklisting Huawei models. This is the result of several negative reviews its app got from Huawei phone users who complain that the VLC app doesn’t work as they desire on the phones

The thing is, VLC needs to stay open in the background to work but Huawei phones usually kill all background app processes in a bid to save battery. This has resulted in lots of complaints dropping on its user forums and the Play Store. Since the fault isn’t from its end, the decision to ban some Huawei devices seems to be the only option available. The announcement did state that no all Huawei phones are banned but the specifics of models this would affect were left out. It was only stated that the ban will affect recent Huawei phones.

Apart from the VLC media player, there are several third-party players available on the Play Store. But if you are a fan of VideoLAN’s VLC player, there you can still download the APK file directly from its website. The only snag is that you won’t receive updates to new versions automatically. Every time something new is released, you will need to go download the latest version of VLC and manually install it. We’ll have to watch for how Huawei would respond to this but we doubt if the company will lose sleep over the issue.
