Xiaomi Has Sold 1 Million Units Of the Mi 8 Series

Alcatel recently unveiled the Alcatel 1x which happened to be it’s first Android Go smartphone. The 1x also rank as the first model to launch under the Android Go program. Apart from that, the phone comes with a budget pricing, available in the U.S for just $99. Alcatel has even taken its budget offering even further lower with the Alcatel 1 which has been spotted in Russia.

The specs and features of the Alcatel 1 was listed recently by a Russian blog but it’s still unclear when it will be launched or how much it will cost. However, it is likely going to be much cheaper that the $99 1x.

The new entry-level model also runs Android Oreo (Go Edition) just like its predecessor. This is perhaps the only spectacular thing about the model. All other specifications are rather uninspiring. The Alcatel 1 packs a 5-inch 18:9 touchscreen with a resolution of 480×960 pixels. The device gets it’s juice from a MediaTek MT6739 SoC, which has a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU. MediaTek has basically turned into the go to guy when shopping for a entry-level SoC. The device is also equipped with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage, which you should find barely workable with the special Go apps suite that takes up less space than you’d expect. In addition, the phone comes with Cat.4 LTE connectivity, although only up to Cat. (150Mbps down, 50Mbps up), GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and dual-SIM functionality. Its dimensions are 137.6 x 65.7 x 9.8 mm and it weighs 134g.

The Alcatel 1 will be available in gold, blue, and black. The is presently no word yet on the pricing and availability.

Xiaomi Confirms Mi Pad 4 Will Have An 8-inch 16:10 Screen

Alongside the Redmi Pro 6 launching on June 25, Xiaomi will also announce a new tablet – the Mi Pad 4. While there have been leaks covering its specs and price in the last few days, Xiaomi has decided to confirm some of these features.

In a teaser poster for the Mi Pad 4, Xiaomi has confirmed the tablet will have an 8-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This is slightly different from the 4:3 aspect ratio of the Mi Pad 3.

There are arguments for and against 16:10 aspect ratio, one advantage the aspect ratio has is it is great for gaming and watching movies while 4:3 is great for reading and web browsing.

With the Mi Pad 4 packing a Snapdragon 660 processor and rumored to have a gaming mode, it makes sense as to why they are switching to 16:10. With that aspect ratio, we expect the tablet to have a 1920 x 1200 aspect ratio like some of Samsung’s tablets.

Motorola has launched a new variant of its new mid-ranger Moto Z3 Play in Brazil. It is a higher-end version which will be sold at a higher price and will provide better performance. The new variant differentiates from the ones already in the market by having 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. It joins the other two more affordable variants sporting 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage.

The new variant also comes in a new color variant: Onyx, that is a dark hue. In Brazil, the new version of the Motorola Moto Z3 Play carries a price tag of BRL 2,699 which roughly translates into $716. Just to remind you, the previous version has a listing price of BRL 2,299, roughly $610. The rest of the specs sheet remains the same, as well as the support to MotoMods.

Motorola Moto Z3 Play features a 6.01-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The high memory is supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset running at a max frequency of 1.8 GHz. As the main camera, the handset has a dual setup with 12 + 5 MP resolutions. The front camera is an 8 MP snapper, while the battery has an average 3000 mAh capacity.

Xiaomi Releases Camera Samples of The Redmi 6 Pro

Ahead of the release of the Redmi 6 Pro on Tuesday, the official Redmi Weibo account has released camera samples of the mid-range device.

The Redmi 6 Pro, like the Redmi S2, has dual rear cameras in a 12MP 1.25um pixel sensor + 5MP sensor configuration. It also has AI baked into some features such as AI beauty mode and AI portrait mode.

The pictures are not bad but they are not the best we have seen. Nevertheless, you should be able to take some pretty decent pictures under great lighting conditions.

The Redmi 6 Pro will be the first Redmi phone to come with a notch. If you don’t like it, Xiaomi says you will be able to hide it with a simple toggle. Its display is 5.84-inches and has a 2280 x 1080 resolution. It is powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 2GB, 3GB, or 4GB of RAM and 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB of storage respectively.

But given that 4000 Yuan will be the price of the most powerful variant, the lower-end versions will cost less. So, the prices of Meizu 16 series will be very competitive and it may allow it to get an important slice of the Chinese flagship market. Meizu 16 is also tipped to come with an 18:9 display which will not embrace the notched design, as well as an in-display fingerprint reader allowing to minimize the bezels. Leaked Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Advertising Images Reveal Its Design with Thin Bezels

Ever since Xiaomi made the announcement that the Mi Pad 4 will be launched on June 25, the airwaves have been buzzing with several details of the fourth-generation Mi tablet. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 real design may have been spotted in a couple of leaked images which GSMArena describes as advertising images.

The images unmask the Mi Pad 4 front and rear design and there seems to be a change in the design. Noticeably, the front bezels look like what has been trimmed when compared to those of the Mi Pad, Pad 2 and Pad 3. The bezels obviously look thinner on the top and bottom side and the company seems to have removed the front Mi branding. While at the back, the Mi logo is still at the bottom part. Xiaomi still retains the camera position but the sensor looks bigger than those of the Pad 2 and 3. We can also see the 3.5mm audio jack at the upper edge.

Samsung’s Dual-Screen Bezel-less Phone Patent Could Be The Future of “The Galaxy”

Global smartphone market leader Samsung has always been at the forefront of innovative designs. The company is well positioned to lead the race to be the first to release a foldable phone. While we wait for that, a new Samsung patent has now emerged, giving us an idea of where future designs of the Galaxy series may be headed.

The patented design is that of a phone with a second display fixed on the back. The design includes a bezel-less full-screen display coupled with the smaller secondary screen at the back. The secondary display may not be different from that of the Meizu Pro 7, and LG V20 but it sure looks bigger. We also saw the dual display design on the Yotaphone models but the second screen is an e-ink display.

Questions have been asked severally about the relevance of a secondary display on a phone. But then, the design may even not be for an upcoming smartphone but could be for a technology that may find its way into a future phone. The technology sometimes ends up not being utilised. In this case, it was stated that ‘the broken lines shown in the drawings don’t form any part of the claimed design. That means the purported secondary display isn’t part of the patent.

Despite the ultra-thin bezels, the front design is void of a front camera and iris scanner. The only features seemingly depicted in the sketches are an earpiece and what looks like a proximity sensor sitting next to it on the top bezel. But then, this isn’t likely the complete design of a phone Samsung will release. The focus which is the straight lines seems to be on the bezel-less display. We could see Samsung go further with reducing the bezels on future Galaxy series flagship which seems to be the only direction to go presently.

Vivo V9 Youth Gets Price Cut In India, Now Available For Rs. 17,990 ($265)

In April this year, Vivo launched Vivo V9 Youth edition smartphone in the Indian market, which is the toned-down variant of the Vivo V9 in order to make it more affordable.

Now, the company has slashed the price of the Vivo V9 Youth in the Indian market by Rs. 1,000 (approx. $15). With this new price cut, the smartphone is now available for a price of Rs. 17,990, which roughly converts to $265.

This was revealed through images posted by an offline retailer. However, at the time of writing this, the pricing of Vivo V9 Youth appears to be Rs. 18,990 on online retailing platforms, including the company’s own online store in India.

The Vivo V9 Youth edition comes with a 6.3-inch IPS LCD Full View 2.0 display with 1080 x 2280 Full HD+ screen resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio along with a notch on top of the display. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC based on the 14nm process and clocked at 1.8GHz.

It is paired with an Adreno 506 GPU and packs 4GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, along with support for microSD card for further expanding the phone’s storage capacity for up to 256GB. Coming to the camera department, the smartphone sports a dual camera setup at the back comprising a 16MP primary sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor.

The camera offers several features which are found on the more expensive V9, including AR stickers, Bokeh mode for DSLR-like effect, and an AI Face Beauty mode. On the front side, there’s a 16MP snapper and a soft LED flash, placed inside the front notch.

It also comes with Face Unlock feature which enables users to use facial recognition to unlock the phone with this camera. There’s also a fingerprint scanner located at the back panel.

Coming to the software, the device runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box and comes with a custom Funtouch OS 4.0 UI on top. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, and GPS with GLONASS. The device is powered by a 3,260mAh battery ensuring a full day of usage.

Samsung Reportedly Testing Its First Android Go Phone in Europe, Asia & Latin America

Samsung was among the first OEMs to utilize the Android operating system after it was unveiled by Google. The company ever since it embraced Android, have always shipped it with a customised UI which was initially known as TouchWiz but now goes by the name Samsung Experience. But right now, there are reports that the company is working on bringing stock Android to its low-end models.

The stock Android is said to come under Google’s Android Go program and the tech giant is reportedly testing an entry-level device in several countries. The device is said to come with the model number SM-J260 and is powered by an unnamed processor that goes by the codenamed Universal7570_Go. The processor could be the Exynos 7570 or a modified version. The entry-level model also packs 1GB of RAM.

The detail specified that the SM-J260 was seen with three different substrates; SM-J260F, SM-J260M and SM-J260G. The model SM-J260F is currently being tested in the UK, Uzbekistan, Caucasus Countries, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, France, and Poland, while the model number SM-J260M has been spotted in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, Peru, Panada, and Paraguay. In addition, the Asian market is not left out as the SM-J260G is reportedly being tested in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

There is no official word about the launch of an Android Go phone from the company but Samsung has been making move to exhibit its presence in the low-end segment of the market. Its effort with the Tizen-powered Z-series has been anything but successful. This could be the company’s game-changer in that regard.

Teclast is a Chinese manufacturer that has been making tablets for years. They even have a couple of 2-in-1s and laptops in their product lineup. Ahead of the release of Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 4, Teclast M89 tablet is an alternative which costs less and has some features the Mi Pad 4 will be missing when it launches.

The Teclast M89 has a 7.9-inch display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution giving it a higher ppi than the Mi Pad 4 which has an 8-inch screen and a 1920 x 1200 resolution. It also has Gorilla Glass covering it.

Google’s $550 Million Investment In Jingdong Could See Its Hardware Products Selling On JD.com

Google was reported recently to have made a $550 million investment in China’s e-commerce giant JingdongMall also known as JD. The investment will see Google getting 27.1 million newly issued JD.com Class A ordinary shares at an issue price of $20.29 per share which represents a less than 1 percent stake in the company. It was also disclosed that the investment is one piece of a broader partnership which looks to be broader than what we thought. It was revealed that the partnership will include the promotion of JD.com products on Google’s shopping service. More details have now emerged that the partnership will also see Google selling its products on JD.com.

This could be a mutually beneficial relationship with Google likely to benefit the most since China is one of the largest markets due to its boisterous economy couple with a large young population. Google and JD have reportedly discussed selling Google’s popular A.I.-enabled Google Home speakers in the region via JD.com.

Google Home Speaker comes with Google’s own smart AI assistant which is programmed in English. There is no history of a Chinese version but if the story turns out to be true, it means Google may have been working on a Chinese version. We can’t verify the authenticity of this news as Google has made several efforts to enter China in the past which were unsuccessful due to the company’s stance on a free and open internet. When it finally goes on sale, the Google Home speaker will have a host of Chinese-manufactured Smart speakers to contend with, including that of Xiaomi. But the sales will further deepen Google’s foothold in the region, following years of failed attempts to establish one.

Blackberry has updated its DTEK security app with a refreshed UI and a couple of new features. The DTEK app was ushered in at the same time the company began its Android journey by launching the first Android-powered Blackberry phone – the Blackberry Priv.

The DTEK app brings additional security to your smartphone by measuring how secure your BlackBerry handset is in terms of the passwords you’re using. The app also alerts users of the apps that have access to the phone’s camera, microphone, location, and personal information. DTEK security app will equally let you know where your phone’s weakest link is and suggests measures that will fortify the security of the phone.

Vivo X21 features a shiny glass back and an aluminum frame, as well as a notched display with a very high screen-to-body ratio. The screen has a size of 6.28 inches and it shows images at a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels. On the hardware side, it features a midrange Snapdragon 660 chipset, that is an octa-core processor by Qualcomm running at a max clock frequency of 2.2 GHz. It is supported by 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal storage depending on the specific configuration. It even features a dual camera setup on its back with pretty nice performance.

The battery has a capacity of 3200 mAh and it supports fast charging, while the operating system installed out of the box is Android 8.1 Oreo customized with Funtouch OS 4.0, a custom iteration of Google’s operating system with several additional features.
