Live Photo Focuses On Screen-To-Body Ratio Of The Meizu 15 Plus

The Meizu 15 Plus has leaked in a new live photo and we are super impressed with the screen-to-body ratio. Meizu’s upcoming flagship is a special 15th anniversary phone. It is also expected to come in Lite and Plus variants.

Meizu 15 Plus Live photo

The new live photo shows only the front of the device which is pretty much the exciting part. Meizu has shaved off  a large chunk of the bezel at the top but has left enough to house the earpiece, front camera, and sensor.

The bottom bezel is practically non-existent though. That means no mBack button and no front-mounted fingerprint scanner. There is a virtual holo button which should work as a virtual mBack button just like in the Meizu M6s.

Meizu 15 Plus
Top and bottom bezel comparison

While we are super impressed about the display, we hope Meizu has tuned the software well enough such that accidental palm touches do not confuse intentional taps.

Amazon Joins Google And Apple, Will Develop Its Own AI Chip For Alexa

News has it that Amazon will develop its own custom AI chip for use in its future echo devices. The custom AI chip is expected to improve how the Alexa voice assistant works.

Amazon Echo 2nd Gen
Amazon Echo 2nd Gen

The decision to design its won chip will put Amazon in the same category as Apple and Google – the two other tech giants designing custom processors for use in their devices. It will also mean loss of business for those who are current suppliers to Amazon.

Chipmakers who currently supply Amazon with chips for its Echo devices include Texas Instruments (Amazon Echo 1st Gen), Intel (Echo Show), and MediaTek ( Echo Dot 2nd Gen). If Amazon cuts them out, it sure is going to be a significant loss but with third-party manufacturers in the mix, there is still money to be made elsewhere.

Amazon seems to have been planning this for a while as its recent acquisitions have shown. According to The Information who first reported the news, Amazon acquired Annapurna Labs – an Israeli chipmaker in 2015. It also bought Blink – a security camera manufacturer last year. Amazon is also reported to have over 400 employees with chip experience.

Galaxy Note 9 Under Display Fingerprint Sensor Rumors Killed, Mass Production to Start in June

Samsung was rumored to introduced under-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy Note 8. However, reports revealed that since the South Korean company encountered technical problems in incorporating the fingerprint scanner under the display, the Galaxy Note 8 was launched with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. Since then the rumor mill has been claiming that the Galaxy Note 9 arriving this year would be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader.  However, fresh information revealed by a South Korean publication reveals that the Galaxy Note 9 is unlikely to feature it.

Samsung has reportedly stopped its Galaxy Note 9 project with under display fingerprint sensor. The report claims that a number of companies have been providing Samsung with the necessary sensors for under display fingerprint reader since the past two years. However, Samsung is still not able to find success in its commercialization mainly because of the technical difficulties it has encountered. Industry insiders have now revealed that the Note 9 will be coming with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy S8

Fingerprint recognition system that involves embedding of the biometric sensor under the capacitive button can accurately collect fingerprint information of the user. However, when it is placed under the display, it is unable to collect information accurately. Samsung is working with leading fingerprint sensor providers like LSI, Qualcomm, EJS Tech, Beyond Eyes and Synaptics since a long time, but it seems that the technology is still not accurate enough to get introduced on the Galaxy Note 9. It is likely that the Galaxy X or Galaxy Note X arriving next year would be featuring it.

The mass production of the Galaxy Note 9 is slated to begin in June. The production of the phablet has been reportedly delayed as the company took four months to incorporate the fingerprint scanner under its display. Like the upcoming Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, the Galaxy Note 9 is also expected to sport the same Infinity Display design.

Leaked Samsung Patent Sketch Tips Galaxy Note 9 To Pack An Under-display Fingerprint Scanner

The under display fingerprint technology seems to be the next big thing in the smartphone industry after the viral full-screen design. The technology has only featured on the Vivo X20 Plus UD version for now but rumours abound that we would soon see the UD fingerprint technology coming to our favorite smartphones soon. One of the models the techology is tipped to feature on is the Galaxy Note 9, Samsung’s next-gen Galaxy Note series smartphone. The sketch of a new patent for which Samsung has purportedly been granted license has leaked on Weibo, showing the design of the UD technology.

The under-the-glass fingerprint sensors were rumoured last year as coming to the Galaxy S9, but it later turned out to be false. Instead, the Galaxy Note 9 was fingered in the rumour mills to be the first Samsung phone with a fingerprint scanner embedded in its display. How the sensor would sit under the display of the Galaxy Note 9 has now been featured in a sketch said to be a patent that Samsung has been granted. From the sketch, we could see a handset with a fingerprint pad embedded right in the display. It has that typical elliptical shape that Samsung has been sticking to over the past few years, too. But this time around, the eliptical pad seems to been inside the display screen and not on the bottom bezel.

Why this sounds interesting is that the Galaxy Note 9 would have a front-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of the sensor been placed at the back which would make it difficult to operate. The Galaxy Note 9 is expected to keep up with the 6.4-inch screen size of its predecessors with a resolution of 4096×2160 pixels screen and Pixel density of 724ppi. The model is also expected to feature a Snapdragon 845 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and there will be 256GB of storage. The device is also rumoured to feature a dual camera setup both at the front and rear aspects.

Rumors are rife that Qualcomm will soon announce the Snapdragon 670 as the successor edition of Snapdragon 660. Since two new OPPO phones rumored as OPPO R13 and R13 Plus have received 3C certification in China, it is speculated that the OPPO R13 duo could be the first Snapdragon 670 chipset driven smartphones.

OPPO phones with model numbers PAAT00 and PAAM00 have recently appeared on China’s 3C certification website. Apart from support for 20W fast charging, nothing else have been disclosed about these OPPO phones through their 3C listing.

It’s interesting given that the Xiaomi’s invite doesn’t hint anything about the Mi TV launch in India. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 launch event will take place on February 14 at 12:00 PM IST and as always, the company will be live-streaming the event on its official website.

Previously, there have been a few reports suggesting that China-based Xiaomi would launch a television set in India but every time the company has brushed aside those rumors.

Xiaomi’s New Subsidiary Reportedly Working On Gaming Smartphones

Xiaomi is reported to have got a new subsidiary known as Nanchang Black Shark Technology Co., Ltd or simply Black Shark, which is devoted to the manufacture of gaming smartphones. Now, there is no certainty to this assertion but the firm recently launched its new Weibo account and it is clearly stated that it is a mobile phone manufacturer.

razer phone
Razer Gaming Smartphone

Xiaomi would not want to launch a direct competition to its growing smartphone line so the rumour that the brand is devoted to manufacturing of gaming smartphones makes sense. Although the brand is yet to tease any products, most of its posts are related to games review. It is also rumoured that one of its devices is already being referenced by a government agency that hinted at a highly advanced cooling system referred to as “aviation class” and a flagship chipset. A true gaming smartphone should have an efficient cooling system as one of its highlight and most flagship SoCs offer that.  Most chips usually pack processors that can provide efficient power management and enough power to handle some extremely graphically intensive games but there is usually the problem of overheating which causes the games to throttle most times. This doesn’t offer seamless gameplay and that is where the gaming smartphone comes in.

These are mere speculations as Xiaomi is yet to officially express an ambition to compete in the gaming smartphone segment of the market that’s still a niche product category that OEMs are yet to venture into in droves. Only recently, Razer launched its gaming smartphone with an impressive design an hardware, including a 120GHz display. We can’t say if the Razer phone was responsible for Xiaomi’s alleged interest in venturing into the niche market. But it is interesting to note that Sun Changxu who works for Xiaomi is reportedly on the board of Black Shark. So the rumor may hold some water. Apart from Xiaomi, Taiwanese phone maker ASUS is also rumoured to be working on a gaming smartphone billed for launch later this year. It would be interesting to see if this becomes yet another trend in the industry.

Asus To Reportedly Launch A Gaming Smartphone At MWC 2018 Alongside Zenfone 5

Meizu E3 may not be the only upcoming smartphone dedicated to gaming. According to new rumors, Asus will launch a gaming smartphone alongside the Zenfone 5 series at MWC 2018. After the initial success of the Razer Phone, it seems that we’ll see more such gaming phones this year. Just like Razer, Asus is one of the most famous brands in the gaming sector. Its ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand counts many gaming PCs and peripherals which are among the most used by gamers.

ASUS Zenfone 5 MWC 2018

Will we see a ROG phone as well? For now, we are just talking about speculations, there is no official confirmation by the company, so take this info with a pinch of salt. In the meantime, Asus has published an official teaser that confirms the launch of the Zenfone 5 at Mobile World Congress. According to sources, the company will launch at least three high-end phones in the first half of 2018, and it is said that there will be a gaming phone in addition to these. The smartphones in question are Zenfone 5, Zenfone Max Pro M1 and Zenfone 5z. But note that Zenfone Max Pro M1 is tipped to come with an octa-core Snapdragon 636 SoC, which is not the most suitable SoC for gaming.

On the other hand, Zenfone 5z should sport an octa-core Snapdragon 835, which is the best SoC by Qualcomm after the Snapdragon 845. It is also the same processor as the Razer Phone. All the high-end phones launched by Asus in 2018 should have a display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and narrow bezels, unlike last year. The standard version of Asus Zenfone 5 will have very narrow bezels on three sides and a thicker one on the lower part. It will be launched on February 27 and it will probably be an upper-midranger, so we really hope to see a more advanced version of the model which could be dedicated to gaming.

Huawei Trademarks Mate X Moniker For An Upcoming Smartphone

Huawei has patented a new moniker: Mate X. It was filed on the website of the EU Intellectual Property Office, and according to the application it has been located in the category “Mobile phones; smartphones”. Now, there are two most reliable hypotheses: the first is that we are talking about an upcoming flagship phone, maybe a more advanced variant of the latest Huawei flagship: the Mate 10. A second hypothesis is that the patent has been filed just to protect the business from competitors which could choose this name for their products and release similar devices which could harm Huawei’s image.

huawei mate x

A device with a similar name already exists among Huawei’s product lineup, but it is not a smartphone. We are referring to the Huawei Matebook X released last year: it is a Windows 10 laptop with an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD with a 256 GB capacity in its base version. The existence of this device gives even more credit to the hypothesis that Huawei has trademarked the Mate X moniker only to defend itself from competitors. But on the other hand, it is also true that Apple released iPhone X last year, which is a special version for the 10th anniversary of iPhone, and Huawei may be planning to do something similar by releasing a variant of the Mate 10 identified by the letter X.

At this moment it is only possible to speculate about it as we do not have any official info if we exclude the moniker. Just to remind you, Huawei is going to hold an event at MWC 2018 in which it will showcase new laptops and smartphones. So, if Huawei Mate X really exists, we may know more about it at the most important trade show of the year related to mobile devices, which will take place starting from February 26.

Moto E5 Real Machine Leaks: To Feature Rear Fingerprint Sensor Embedded With Its Logo

Motorola is expected to release the Moto E5 models this year as successors to the E4 series. The Moto E series is the company’s budget series and usually come with an affordable price but quality build. We expect the Moto E5 to launch alongside the E5 Plus popular tipster Evan Blass has revealed on Twitter that there is going to be an E5 Play.

The tipster also shared a couple of real-looking photos of the E5 Play. This sounds interesting because this is the first time the E series is getting a Play model. The renders show only the front view of the device and worthy of note is the lack of a front home button as found on the Moto E4. That tends to confirm speculations that the E5 would pack a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.  The fingerprint sensor would be unique in that it would be embedded under the Moto logo at the rear. Chinese phone maker Smartisan did something similar on the Nut Pro 2. The device also comes with rounded edges and front flash with its selfie camera.
