Rivian, a U.S.-based electric vehicle maker known for its premium electric trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, has made a bold new claim about the future of driving. The company, which focuses heavily on advanced software and clean-energy technology, says its cars could become so autonomous that owners won’t even need to be inside them. 

According to CEO RJ Scaringe, Rivian aims to reach this level of full driverless capability by 2030, allowing vehicles to run errands, pick up friends, and travel completely on their own.

Steps Toward Full Autonomy

Scaringe explains that Rivian’s next major features include “hands-off everywhere” driving and point-to-point navigation similar to Tesla’s FSD. These systems will still require driver attention at first. But he believes that soon after, cars will no longer need monitoring. By 2028 or 2029, he suggests Rivian vehicles could complete solo trips while owners stay at home.

Musk says these cars will operate with no driver involvement. Further reports say that Tesla will soon launch unsupervised FSD in Austin, allowing vehicles to navigate without human monitoring. These updates show that Tesla remains a major competitor in the race toward full autonomy.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is making significant inroads into the North American market and could soon berth in Canada. The biggest Chinese EV maker has already entered the Mexican market and there is an official confirmation.

BYD released a press statement jointly with Uber that announced a new partnership between both companies. The partnership offers Uber drivers discounted pricing and special financing options on BYD EVs.

The goal of the new partnership is to deliver 100,000 BYD EVs into the Uber network. This will be a remarkable milestone for BYD as it continues to grapple with claims from the US and Europe that its products are excessively subsidized by Beijing. EV makers in the US and Europe therefore feel threatened by the most affordable offerings by Chinese EV makers as a whole, of which BYD is the leader.

Chinese companies offer some of the most affordable, advanced, and long-range EVs. BYD already has a global presence in the Middle East and Oceania. It currently does not retail passenger vehicles in Canada. Rather it sells buses in Canada, as in the US.

Currently, the stringent 100% tariff regime for Chinese EVs makes the US market impossible to enter at this time. However, it already sells its cars in Mexico and Canada is on the verge of being included. It is also possible to have some inroads into the US market via Mexico or Canada, as there are no tariffs on vehicles imported to the US from those countries. There are however regulations in place that will prevent BYD from just dumping its vehicles in Canada with the possibility of entering the US market. The US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement stipulates that at least 75% of the value of such vehicles must come from parts and materials sourced from either of the three countries.

It remains to be seen how the US government directly or indirectly reacts to BYD’s entry into the passenger EV market in Canada.

BYD continues to square up with Tesla for the top spot in the EV market despite a stringent tariff regime preventing it from entering the lucrative US market.

The Uber-BYD engagement is a multi-year strategic partnership that will see BYD delivering 100,000 EVs onto the Uber platform across several countries. The markets cover Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and Latin America. The project will start with some key markets in Europe and Latin America. In a press statement jointly signed by both companies, it was revealed that the duo is working together to bring down the total cost of EV ownership for Uber drivers. The move is targeted at accelerating the uptake of EVs on the Uber network on a global scale. The move is also aimed at introducing millions of riders to ‘greener rides’.

The agreement, according to Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, is the largest global agreement of its kind. It comes with great prospects for the two companies and will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Uber drivers who switch to EVs. This version prioritizes affordability over raw performance, making it a potentially attractive option for Singaporean consumers due to the country’s unique car ownership regulations.

The new Model 3 sacrifices some performance for that lower price tag.

This new version boasts a lower price tag of SGD 69,300 (approximately 372,700 Yuan) compared to the standard rear-wheel drive variant. However, it sacrifices some performance with a total power output of 110 kW and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.6 seconds (compared to 6.1 seconds for the standard model). Interestingly, both versions share the same WLTP driving range of 513 km.

Whether this version will be available in mainland China remains unclear, as it’s specifically designed to comply with Singapore’s regulations.

So, why the “Drive 110”? Singapore’s car ownership system requires bidding for a Certificate of Ownership (COE) before purchasing a vehicle. There are two COE categories: Class A (up to 110 kW) and Class B (above 110 kW). Class A COEs are significantly cheaper. Taking both the COE cost and car price into consideration, the “Drive 110” with its Class A COE becomes the more affordable option for Singaporean consumers, despite the reduced performance compared to the standard rear-wheel drive version.

The company is planning to deliver a total of 100,000 EVs throughout 2024.

This production ramp-up aligns with Xiaomi’s earlier announcement of starting double-shift production in June to guarantee a monthly delivery target of 10,000 units. Their long-term goal for 2024 is ambitious, aiming to deliver a total of 100,000 SU7s, with a stretch target of 120,000 units. While these numbers are not that high, they are still pretty good for the SU7, which is the company’s first foray into EVs – a relatively young market.

To help manage customer wait times, Xiaomi Auto launched a “Lock Order and Wait for User Care” campaign on June 28th. This program offers gifts to users who have been waiting for their SU7 for more than 3 months as compensation of sorts.

Commuting with electric vehicles (EVs) has long been hampered by charging times that look pretty pale in comparison to the convenience of gas station fill-ups. Sure, planning and route optimization can work for longer trips, but that approach may soon be obsolete. Chinese battery giants BYD and CATL are on the cusp of launching ultra-fast-charging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that, in theory, could be fully recharged in just 10 minutes.

Upgrading the charging infrastructure is crucial in the long run

Battery technology is undergoing a rapid evolution. Recent years have seen significant improvements in both range and charging speed for EVs. BYD and CATL’s upcoming batteries are the latest example, aiming to revolutionize charging times. These companies are reportedly set to debut their ultra-fast-charging LFP batteries by the end of this year, potentially eliminating the need for lengthy charging stops during road trips.

The key to these rapid charge times lies in the 6C charging rate boasted by both the BYD Blade 2.0 and CATL Qilin 2.0 battery packs. In simpler terms, the “6” signifies that the charging multiplier is six times the battery capacity. For instance, a 100-amp-hour battery could be charged with a massive 600-amp current.

However, there are hurdles to overcome. Upgrading the charging infrastructure is crucial to support these speeds. Without an update to the charging network, owners of these advanced batteries won’t be able to fully benefit from their technology and will be limited by slower charging options. It’s also important to remember that batteries can’t maintain peak charging speeds throughout the entire charging cycle. Expect some strategic marketing around these new batteries, with a focus on specific charging windows, like 10% to 80% in 10 minutes. The 2024 Zeekr 001 with its 5C-rated battery is a prime example, achieving an 11.5-minute charge time for this range.

Specific details about the upcoming 6C batteries from BYD and CATL are still undisclosed. However, reports suggest that existing DC fast chargers designed for 4C-rated batteries (four times the charging speed compared to the capacity) can deliver up to 480 kW of power and a maximum current of 615 amps. Achieving even faster charging would necessitate an increase in either voltage or amperage (or both). While technically feasible, equipping thousands of DC fast chargers with such high-rated utility connections would require significant financial investment.

Progress is underway, though gradual. China has seen the deployment of the first 600 kW fast chargers from Huawei earlier this year. Additionally, Li Auto, the manufacturer behind the Mega minivan capable of gaining 310 miles of range in a 10-minute charge, has plans to install 5,000 5C-capable fast chargers by next year.

In comparison, Tesla‘s Supercharger network, the dominant DC fast charging network in the US, offers up to 250 kW of power from its V3 stalls. While respectable, there’s room for improvement, as evidenced by other US providers. Electrify America offers stalls delivering up to 350 kW, and Gravity Charging’s hub in New York boasts an impressive 500 kW per connected EV.

The future of EV charging appears to be speeding towards faster and faster charging times. Looking at other major car companies, Geely Automobile also saw positive results in April, selling 153,267 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 39%. SAIC Group sold a strong 285,000 NEVs from January to April, representing a year-on-year increase of over 35%. GAC Aion achieved global sales of 28,113 units in April.

Emerging Chinese automakers continued to make their mark with notable sales figures. Hongmeng Zhixing maintained its top spot among new Chinese forces by delivering 29,632 vehicles in April. Leapmotor demonstrated impressive growth with 15,005 delivered vehicles, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 72%. Li Auto delivered 25,787 vehicles in April, with a year-on-year increase of 0.4%. Their year-to-date delivery volume reached 106,187 vehicles. Ji Krypton experienced significant growth, delivering 16,089 vehicles in April, a year-on-year increase of 99% and a month-on-month increase of 24%. Their delivery volume from January to April reflected a 111% year-on-year growth. Xpeng Motors also delivered 9,393 vehicles, representing a year-on-year increase of 33%.

Established automakers with a presence in the NEV market had positive results as well. SAIC-GM delivered 8,762 NEVs in April, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 93.1%.

New entrants like Xiaomi saw promising initial sales. The Xiaomi SU7, launched on April 3rd, delivered 7,058 units since its debut, with a cumulative number of locked orders reaching 88,063 units.

Lantu Auto maintained steady growth, delivering 4,003 vehicles in April, demonstrating a year-on-year increase of 20%. Their year-to-date delivery volume reached 20,348 vehicles, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 20%.

The car adopts the Ocean Net family design aesthetic, featuring sharp headlights, a fastback design on the sides, and popular taillights that stretch across the rear.

Based on Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings, the Seal 06 DM-i will have dimensions of 4830/1875/1495mm with a 2790mm wheelbase, similar in size to the previously reported Qin L. It will also sport stylish petal-style wheels and offer sunroof options (panoramic, standard, or small).

Under the hood, the Seal 06 DM-i retains the 1498ml engine with 74kW of power and a 180km/h top speed. It boasts a pure electric cruising range of 90km and a fuel consumption rating of 3.98L/100km. Super Power-Saving Mode reduces power consumption by limiting functionalities. This includes a capped speed of 90km/h, smoother acceleration, and reduced air conditioning performance. Comfort features like heated seats and steering wheel, ambient lighting, and heated mirrors are also deactivated.

To further conserve energy, the mode disables intelligent driving assistance, parking functions, entertainment systems, and even the car refrigerator. Don’t worry, Super Power-Saving Mode deactivates automatically when the estimated range climbs above 300km. Drivers can also temporarily override the speed limit for short bursts when needed.

Also, the SU7 features a camera positioned between the steering wheel and instrument screen to monitor driver alertness. This camera detects signs of fatigue or distraction like closed eyes, head turns, or phone use.

If fatigue or distraction is detected, the system issues voice warnings and displays on-screen reminders to refocus on driving. Xiaomi assures users that the system only analyzes driver behavior locally within the vehicle, with no image data recorded or transmitted externally.
