Samsung was one of the first brands to launch a foldable smartphone model in the market. Just three years ago, the first ever Galaxy Fold was announced, and now, it seems that the device has reached the end of its life in terms of Android updates.

For those unaware, the Galaxy Fold faced many delays before its eventual release and launched with Android 9 Pie out of the box back in 2019. But since then, the South Korean tech giant has offered various updates and the company’s first foldable device now runs on Android 12 OS. But it seems like this is the end of the road as Samsung will not be offering a major OS update for the Galaxy Fold. This means that the device will not be receiving the Android 13 OS based One UI 5.0 update.

In other words, it also means that this is the only foldable smartphone from the company to not receive any update past Android 12. Samsung typically offers three years of OS updates with another year of security patches. But since the Galaxy Fold has reached the end of its three year update cycle, it will no longer be eligible for major upgrades. Meanwhile, the Glaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phone models from 2021 and 2022 will still be eligible for the Android 14 update next year.

Keep in mind that this doesn’t necessarily mean the end of all software updates for this device. There is still at least a year left for security updates and patches. With Android 13 just rolling out, Android 12 is by no means outdated, so existing Galaxy Fold users need not worry about their foldable phone getting outdated all of a sudden.

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3 as its latest foldable smartphones. These devices arrive with a new version of the company’s mobile software called One UI 3.1.1 based on Android 11. The South Korean tech giant has now started rolling out this version of One UI to its older foldable smartphones.

Samsung has begun to seed One UI 3.1.1 update for its previous foldable phones. The software update is currently being rolled out in batches for Galaxy Z Fold2, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and Galaxy Z Flip. It will be also available for the original Galaxy Fold around a week later.

The new system update brings all the new One UI features that are present on the Galaxy Z Fold3 and the Galaxy Z Flip3. Most of these features have to be enabled from Settings > Advanced Features > Labs.

Xiaomi files a lot of foldable design patents but none see the light of the day. Right from the time it’s first foldable smartphone prototype hit the radar of leaks, Xiaomi’s camp has remained dormant so far. Now, a new patent reveals that Xiaomi is trying out yet another design of Samsung, this time a generation older with a twist.

The new patent find is once again by LetsGoDigital. Xiaomi Mobile Software Co. Ltd. has applied it earlier this year(Jan 2) on CNIPA. CNIPA stands for China National Intellectual Property Administration). The patent has been published today(October 20). From the looks, and the description on the CNIPA website, it is definitely a foldable smartphone.

Surprisingly, the design looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy’s foldable device with an inward folding design. Also, the front cover has a secondary screen and a triple rear camera setup. Both these resemble the First generation Galaxy Fold from 2019. Also, the vertical hinge resembles a lot like the Fold but with a flatter design. That said, we notice the difference on the inside. The bigger screen is edge-to-edge and doesn’t have a cutout at the top-right corner like the “Fold”.

However, there is a vertical stripe on the right side of the big screen. It is probably for the camera sensors with a flashlight/face-id scanner. This strip resembles one of the earlier patents from Xiaomi. The interesting thing about this design is that the big display lies well inside the frame surrounding it. This makes it fold and lay flush unlike the small hole left on Galaxy Fold. So, you can imagine the uniformity, and to put it into perspective, it should lay flat if you put it upside down on a surface.

Having said that, there is no other info regarding this, and considering it’s a patent, we are left to stare at just 3D schematics. Samsung is currently the leader of foldable smartphones and its latest Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a reference point for many. Accordingly, companies like Xiaomi and Huawei have been following their footsteps by patenting similar designs. While Huawei has come out with Mate X, and Mate Xs, Xiaomi’s design hasn’t gone past the testing and is yet to get a breakthrough.

The Galaxy Fold launched last year was the first foldable smartphone by Samsung. It features two displays, one smaller unit on the outside known as ‘cover display’ and another foldable flexible panel inside, which turns the handset into a small-sized tablet. The South Korean tech giant is yet to announce its successor but long before that, rumors-based concept renders of this upcoming foldable have emerged on the internet.

These new rumor-based Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 renders are shared by WindowsUnited, a German website. Before describing the design, we would like to inform you that these are not similar to the near to perfect 3D CAD renders by @OnLeaks. Instead, these renders are merely conceptual as they are created on the basis of what the Galaxy Fold 2 might bring to the table according to the rumors so far.

The website imagines the Galaxy Fold 2 to sport a larger cover display with an ‘Infinity-V notch’. It looks much better than the one present on the original with a larger forehead and chin. The biggest fuss of the current-gen Galaxy Fold is how tiny its outer display is and thus, it will be a welcome change if Samsung nails this design but maybe with a centred punch-hole instead of a notch for the selfie camera.

As for the main inner display, the Galaxy Fold has a big weird cutout at the top. But these unofficial Galaxy Fold 2 concept renders have a clean inner foldable display with a single punch-hole (Infinity-O) at the top left corner for another front-facing camera. Also, this panel is assumed to have support for S-Pen, which could be a game-changer for long-time Galaxy Note users. Lastly, these Galaxy Fold 2 renders feature a Penta-camera setup arranged in a rectangular array similar to the newly launched Samsung Galaxy S20 Series.

Samsung first plunged into the manufacture of foldable smartphones last year but the initial release was marred by some design flaws which the Korean company promptly fixed. The Galaxy Fold was the result and it was a commercial success. The company recently launched the Galaxy Z Flip as its second-generation model.

After this, the question that has popped up and demanded an answer was when the company will venture into a tri-fold model whose schematics have been spotted in Samsung patent applications.

Roh Tae-moon, president and head of Samsung’s mobile divisions spoke to the Korea Herald where he revealed the brand’s plan in that regard. “Technologically, we are capable of designing phones that fold even more times, but what’s more important than the folding technology itself is the kind of value to be offered for consumers,” he said.

However, Roh also expressed pessimism as to the preparedness of the industry for such a device.

“It’s also important to have an ecosystem for sufficient content and services before releasing more foldable variants,” he said. “We can release new foldable phones at an opportune time when there are enough services available on those phones and provide needed values for consumers.”

“I envision a future of foldable devices in which people will easily carry around large-size screens in accordance with their needs and the screens are folded (no matter how many times) in any sizes that they want,” Roh said.

Samsung had an early start for the year 2020. The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 Lite phones were introduced right at the beginning of the year. The Galaxy S20 series and the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone are slated to go official in the coming week. The South Korean company will be bringing the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 to wider markets and it will be also releasing couple of A-series and M-series smartphones in the country. Recent reports have revealed that the South Korean company is also working on a second edition of the Galaxy Fold. Dutch based GalaxyClub.nl publication has shared some initial information on the Galaxy Fold 2.

Samsung is yet to confirm the name of the successor for its foldable display phone – the Galaxy Fold that was announced in 2019. The rumor mill is currently referring to as the Galaxy Fold 2. The aforementioned publication has revealed that the Galaxy Fold 2 is codenamed as Winner 2 or Win2. The original Galaxy Fold was codenamed as Winner.

With the similar codename as predecessor model, there is a possibility that the Galaxy Fold 2 may arrive with a design that is similar to the original Galaxy Fold. Hence, there may not be any major changes in terms of design. Rather, the Galaxy Fold 2 may for an enhanced experience than the predecessor model. It is yet to be confirmed whether the device will be accompanied with a stylus. It could be packed with more powerful specs than the original model.

The Motorola Razr (2019) is already shipping to owners and the Galaxy Flip Z will arrive later this month. Both phones are the only two foldable devices that fold vertically (along the horizontal axis) that consumers can and will be able to buy as the case may be.

There is another category of foldable phones with members like the Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X. These devices not only fold horizontally (along the vertical axis) but they unfold into tablets too unlike the Motorola Razr and Galaxy Flip Z that unfold into “tall” phones.

Since the arrival of both categories of foldable devices, consumers have been divided. Some like the Mate X/Galaxy Fold as they are able to unfold into a larger device while others prefer the Motorola Razr/Galaxy Flip Z for being able to fold into a smaller form factor.

Motorola Razr is all set to go on sale in the U.S. for the first time next month. Ahead of its release, the company uploaded a series of videos that showcase Razr’s unique features. This series includes a video titled ‘Caring for razr’ featuring a list of dos and don’ts. In the video, Motorola specifically pointed out that ‘Bumps & Lumps’ on the screen of the foldable device was normal.

Motorola said that the Razr’s foldable display is designed to bend. So, the formation of bumps and lumps on the display are pretty normal. This is a very interesting statement, especially because of what happened with the first batch of Galaxy Fold review units that were shipped out in early 2019. A number of Galaxy Fold units experienced display issues soon after the formation of small bumps and lumps on the screen. So this looks like a deliberate statement to inform users that it’s okay if their Razr unit develops a bump or two during usage.

At the just-concluded 2020 edition of CES, Samsung demoed a number of products to a select number of individuals. One of the products is its soon-to-be-released second foldable phone with a clamshell design. A leaked photo from the event showed the phone, which was originally referred to as the Galaxy Fold 2, with the name “Galaxy Bloom”. Now, a new leak has revealed that is not the official name of the phone but its codename.

Popular leaker Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) took to Twitter a few hours ago and posted a tweet saying “Bloom is just a code name…” and that “the real name is Galaxy Z ****”. A few hours later, probably unable to contain his excitement, he shared a photo showing the official name of the device.

According to the tweet, the device known as the Galaxy Bloom will launch as the Galaxy Z Flip. Based on this new info, it is safe to say the Galaxy Z is a new line of smartphones from Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will have a fold across its horizontal axis, unlike the Galaxy Fold that folds across its vertical axis.

It has been reported that the device will come with a Snapdragon 855 processor under the hood rather than the new and more powerful Snapdragon 865. It will also feature a new type of glass covering the display called Ultra Thin Glass which replaces the polymer film used for the Galaxy Fold.

Other features of the Galaxy Z Flip include support for 8K video recording, dual cameras, and an Infinity-O display with a centered punch-hole for the selfie camera. It should also run Android 10 based on OneUI out of the box. You can check out images of the device that leaked last month here.

Samsung will announce the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 series at an event scheduled for February 11.

If you put a $2000 price tag on a phone, it is only fair people are curious to know how many units you are able to sell. Last year, there was a report that Samsung had sold 1 million Galaxy Fold units but the statement was later denied. At an interview at CES 2020, CEO of Samsung Electronics, DJ Koh, has revealed the true amount sold.

The top executive revealed that they have sold between 400,000 to 500,000 units of the Galaxy Fold. This goes in line with the earlier statement refuting they had sold 1 million units. The official statement had said that if they had sold 1 million units, they would have sold double their initial sales expectations.

The Galaxy Fold is definitely out of the reach of a lot of people but its launch was one of the highlights of the last decade and a defining moment for the mobile industry.

Samsung is set to announce a new foldable phone that folds vertically. This device should have a cheaper price tag than the Galaxy Fold. There are reports it will launch as the Galaxy Fold 2 but we have also seen some folks say that is not its official name.

There is a launch event scheduled for February 11 where Samsung will announce the Galaxy S20 series and the new foldable device. It is still a month away but we are pretty sure more details about the devices will surface before the launch day.

Huawei P30 Pro

If there was one Huawei phone that stood out in 2019, it would be none other than the Huawei P30 Pro. Huawei stunned us all with the amazing periscope camera setup and the fancy moon mode, never before seen on a smartphone of its size.

The P30 Pro is one of the best camera smartphones of 2019. The phone features a powerful quad-camera setup with a Leica lens that includes a 40MP primary camera, an 8MP periscope lens, a 20MP ultra wide-angle shooter, and a 3D ToF sensor. It was a product of innovation, being the world’s first phone to employ the RYYG based Sony’s new IMX650 sensor instead of a traditional RGB Bayer color filter.

But the P30 Pro was not all about cameras. What’s the Best Flagship Phones list without a Galaxy Note device, right? Samsung made a solid comeback this year with the Galaxy Note 10+. The phone comes with Snapdragon 855 (or Exynos 9825) with 12GB of RAM, a large 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED flexible display and 45W 4300mAh battery on board. The Galaxy Note 10+ camera isn’t all fancy like the P30 Pro but its quad-camera setup featuring a 12MP primary (dual-pixel) sensor, another 12MP telephoto sensor for 2x optical zoom, a 16MP ultrawide lens, and a ToF 3D VGA camera takes consistent high-quality images. For the past few years, Samsung Galaxy Note devices have featured one of the best cameras in the market, and the 2019 Galaxy Note 10+ is no exception. Traditionally, the iPhone series wouldn’t have made it to our Best Flagship Smartphones list. But in 2019, things are different and Apple has clearly upped its game. The Apple iPhone 11 series features one of the best smartphone cameras in the market today. And the 11 Pro Max takes things to another level. The phone features a beautiful 6.5-inch 1242 x 2688 pixel resolution XDR OLED display with 120Hz touch sensing for fluid touch response. The Hexa-core A13 Bionic chip is one of the fastest smartphone processors in the market right now and that’s paired with a 4-core Apple GPU. The 4000mAh battery inside the iPhone 11 Pro Max is the largest battery capacity on an iPhone, ever!

All these features are top of the line, but the real reason this phone makes it to the Best Flagship Smartphones of 2019 is because of its triple camera setup at the back. We were even more confused when the Fold made it to the Verge’s Biggest Fails of the Decade. However, after discussing the Pros and Cons of the Galaxy Fold, we decided to include it as a special category. After all, it is the world’s first commercial foldable in the market right now and selling more than 500,000 units of an experimental smartphone is success in itself!

The Galaxy Fold is the world’s first true commercial foldable available for purchase. Despite its ups and downs, Samsung has managed to create a phone that’s relatively durable, powered by top-end hardware, and features a display that transforms into a tablet with a simple unfold. If you have an eye for revolutionary technologies and an unlimited budget, the Galaxy Fold is the smartphone to buy in 2019.

The Galaxy Fold features two displays, a traditional 4.6-inch AMOLED panel outside and a Foldable Dynamic AMOLED 7.3-inch display inside. There are SIX cameras on board, three at the back which is very similar to the Note 10+, dual 10+8MP cameras on top of the flexible display inside, and another 10MP shooter on top of the cover display outside. A 4350mAh battery with 15W fast wired and wireless charging powers up the two displays. The software is one of the highlights of the Galaxy Fold, with the customized UI enabling a seamless transition between the two displays and allowing users to take full advantage of the tablet-sized display inside.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is already available in multiple countries across the globe. Just last week we saw the Fold go out pre-order in Indonesia. Now we’re receiving fresh new reports that the Galaxy Fold will be making an appearance in another country soon. The infamous folding device will allegedly launch in Taiwan next, though we only have a vague January 2020 date to go off of.

Until recently, Samsung Galaxy Fold folding screen mobile phones have been listed and sold in mainland China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and other regions. While Samsung refuses to give us a solid number, it seems sales have been good enough for Samsung Taiwan to consider the value of launching the folding phone there.

According to Samsung’s official statement, the Galaxy Fold will be available in Taiwanese Samsung Experience Store, Samsung Smart Pavilion and Samsung Taiwan’s official website in January 2020. People who pre-order the device will get a leather case, alongside the goodies in the box. In addition, Samsung officially announced that the Galaxy Fold folding screen phone is priced at NT $ 68,888 ($2,289) in Taiwan.

While this is interesting, it’s worth noting that the next generation of the Galaxy Fold is expected to release in February 2020 at a cheaper price tag. So it remains to be seen if people are ready to shell out thousands of dollars for the current generation model, just a couple of months before its successor launches in the market.

Previously, it was reported that Samsung had managed to sell over 1 million units of its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. However, the company has now denied any such claims about the large numbers.

The South Korean tech giant denied the media reports that claimed it had sold 1 million units of the Galaxy Fold; If it were true, the units sold would be twice as high as the company’s initial sales expectation. Apparently, the words of Samsung’s President, Young Sohn, had been taken out of context by a news report that led to a frenzy of false media coverage, according to a spokesperson.

In TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin event 2019, Sohn stated that “And I think that the point is, we’re selling [a] million of these products…There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000.” This quote was interpreted in a misleading fashion with the spokesperson also stating that Sohn had confused the figure of the company’s initial sales target for the year. It also implies that Samsung has yet to reach the 1 million Galaxy Fold units milestone.

According to analysts, Samsung has sold anywhere from 400,000 to 500,000 units of the Galaxy Fold. From the company’s side, it is reported that Samsung expected to sell around 500,000 units globally. Unfortunately, Samsung has not revealed its actual sales figures so it is uncertain whether this goal has been reached either.

As with other markets, the Galaxy Fold is expected to come in limited quantities and is only available via pre-orders. Also, the company adds that the units will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Inside the box, you’ll get a pair of Galaxy buds and a case along with the foldable.

Note that Samsung is yet to reveal the official price tag of the Galaxy Fold 4G in Indonesia. Expect that information to surface tomorrow when the pre-orders begin. For your reference, the Galaxy Fold 4G launched in the U.S. for $1980 which comes to 27 million Indonesian Rupiah.

It is worth adding that the next generation of the Galaxy Fold is expected to release in February 2020 at a cheaper price tag. So it remains to be seen if people are ready to shell out thousands of dollars for the current generation model, just a couple of months before its successor launches in the market.

According to a new report, Samsung is starting the Open Beta testing for the Galaxy S9 series which will receive it’s One UI 2. It was previously revealed that Samsung’s Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and Galaxy Note 9 series would receive the open beta but the exact date was not specified. Now, it is confirmed to arrive next Monday on 16th December 2019.

For those interested in participating in the open beta, users must download the Samsung Members app. Through this you must register for the Open Beta program and once eligible will receive the Beta build. To install, go to Settings>Software updates>Download updates manually.
Note: Make sure to back up your devices, as it is Beta build and might lead to loss of user data. Also, update any app to the latest builds to avoid compatibility issues.

Recently, the South Korean tech giant had also announced the list of system upgrade plans for Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, and Galaxy S10e; these devices will receive the stable live build for Android 10 OS in January 2020. Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+, on the other hand, will receive the software update in February 2020.

Samsung was one of the first smartphone manufacturers to launch a foldable device commercially in the market. Although the Galaxy Fold was off to a rough start, the company managed to pull through and eventually make the product a success. Now, the South Korean tech giant is reportedly gearing for the launch of the successor, Galaxy Fold 2, which will arrive with an Ultra Thin Glass display unlike the bendable polymer display used on the predecessor.

Previously, it was reported that Samsung signed a deal with another South Korean company that would supply the former with the UTG displays. However, now it has been confirmed to be the case as the company has submitted a trademark for the name “Ultra Thin Glass.”

This move arrives after the disaster that had initially plagued Galaxy Fold devices when their polyamide film over its flexible display panel was accidentally removed by people. The removal process damaged the screen; thus, making glass a better alternative altogether.

The UTG is expected to be found in Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 handset is said to be thinner than 100 microns or even 30 microns. However, the one downside is that it is difficult to produce and is even more expensive than the previous display.

Samsung reportedly wants to bump up the production of foldable smartphones this year, to produce in the ranges of 5 to 6 million units for the market; most of these are expected to be the Galaxy Fold 2 with the new UTG display. Dowoo Insys is the South Korean supplier for the new display and Samsung has already invested KRW 12 Billion (roughly 10 million USD) for the expansion of its manufacturing capacity which currently stands at 500,000 units.

During the Developers Conference in October 2019, Samsung showcased a foldable smartphone concept. It sported a clamshell bending mechanism that folds vertically like the recently announced Motorola RAZR 2019. The device in question could be the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 or another standalone handset in the range. It is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2020 and will feature a “hideaway hinge.”

With 2019 ending, Samsung’s first year after introducing the original Galaxy Fold has also drawn to a close. From what we know so far, Samsung is expected to release two foldable smartphones this year; one of which is expected to be the successor to the Galaxy Fold.  Looking at the designs, one of the upcoming handsets will have a clamshell bending mechanism (folding vertically). This will also make it look distinct from its predecessor owing to its new hinge.

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold foldable phone in India at the beginning of October at a hefty price of Rs. 1,64,999 (~$2,302), making it the most expensive smartphones from the chaebol. The device went on sale in India from Oct. 20. Now, almost two months after the Fold was launched in India, Samsung is offering a discount on the product.

The latest report on 91mobiles claims Samsung is offering a Rs. 7,000 (~$98) discount on the device at offline stores across the country, effectively bringing the price down to Rs. 1,57,999 (~$2205). The device still retails at pre-discounted prices on Samsung’s online store at the time of publication.

Now, a new report suggests that Samsung is also working on a new Galaxy tab with a foldable display.

The recent Samsung patents reveal a Samsung Galaxy Tab featuring clamshell based folding display. In other words, the device, unlike the Galaxy Fold, will bend from the top to the bottom (vertically) rather than from either side (horizontally) similar to Motorola Razr 2019. Notably, the patents also reveal a full body screen on the front which may suggest that the Korean tech giant might be implementing an in-display front camera.

Huawei Mate X was officially revealed at MWC Barcelona earlier this year. However, the foldable was officially launched only last month, with availability slated for November. While there were reports yesterday that said the Huawei Mate X sale was postponed, the company confirmed earlier today that the foldable will go on sale on November 15, as originally planned.

The Huawei Mate X will take on the Galaxy Fold that recently went on sale in China. In fact, the Mate X could get another competitor in the coming months, as the Motorola Razr will hit a few markets in Asia in 2020 (China launch isn’t confirmed though).

Note that Mate X will only be available in limited quantities tomorrow. There will be just one variant available for purchase featuring 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage. The sale will begin at 10:08 AM on November 15 via VMALL (Huawei’s official store in China). Samsung did not mention the number of devices that were sold during the second phase. Samsung will be launching the Galaxy W20 5G foldable phone in China on Nov. 19. It was previously believed to be a new clamshell foldable phone from the company. However, newer reports have claimed that it is nothing but a 5G version of the Galaxy Fold for China that is equipped with a newer chipset. Yesterday, it appeared on TENAA with preliminary specs. The listing has now been updated to reveal its entire specifications. The TENAA listing reveals that the Galaxy W20 5G foldable phone is driven by Snapdragon 855+ mobile platform.

Samsung Galaxy W20 Specifications

The Galaxy W20 5G foldable phone for China has a model number of SM-W2020. The TENAA appearance has revealed that the phone will is fitted with a 4.6-inch display that supports 720 x 1680 pixels. It serves as covering display. Unfolding the device will reveal its flexible AMOLED screen of 7.3 inches that produces 1536 x 2152 pixels resolution.

The Android 9 Pie OS runs on the device. It could be customized with the latest version of One UI 2.0 custom ROM from Samsung. TENAA reveals that it features an octa-core processor that works at 2.956 GHz. This clocking speed belongs to the Snapdragon 855+ mobile platform. The Galaxy Fold 5G phone available outside of China is equipped with SD855+. However, China will be getting Snapdragon 855+ edition of the Galaxy W20 5G. The Samsung Galaxy Fold’s launch that was carried at the beginning of this year was marred with controversy as the display of its review units started malfunctioning. This resulted in Samsung having to delay the launch until September 2019, six months after the formal announcement. The Galaxy Fold has recorded impressive sales figures ever since and even went out-of-stock in a few markets. Samsung has now signed an exclusive deal with Korean supplier Dowoo Insis for Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) panels that will be used on next-generation foldable displays.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold has an integrated polyamide film over its flexible display panel, which resembles a screen protection film. If a person tries to remove this film, they accidentally end up damaging the display. After the marketing nightmare post the media launch back in May 2019, Samsung tucked the edges of the film underneath the Fold’s frame so that people would not rip off the display. 

Another major reason for seeking an alternative to the polyamide film is the trade restrictions imposed by Japan on exporting goods to South Korea since August 2019. The film used by Samsung on the Galaxy Fold was supplied by Japanese firm Sumitomo.

The UTG supplied by Dowoo is said to be thinner than 100 microns, with certain speculations putting the figure close to 30 microns, which is half the thickness of the human hair. Dowoo’s current manufacturing capacity stands at 500,000 units. Samsung Venture has invested approximately KRW 12 billion as part of the deal.

The contract is apparently mid to long term, with Samsung planning to invest even more in the coming days to increase Dowoo’s manufacturing capacity in South Korea and build new units in Vietnam. According to Samsung’s projection, the company is aiming to sell between five and six million foldable smartphones by 2020. Dowoo needs to match its production capacity to meet demands. If the foldable smartphone market picks up the pace as per Samsung’s estimate, Dowoo needs to supply a lot more UTG panels in the coming years. At least Samsung will not have to worry about rival companies poaching Dowoo’s UTG panels as the exclusive deal makes Samsung the sole owner of every panel manufactured by Dowoo Insis.

Samsung is finally making its Galaxy Fold 4G model available for pre-order in China for a price tag of 15,999 yuan ($2281). The foldable is currently available for booking via Samsung’s official website and will go on sale for the first time on November 8. Note that this is the 4G variant of the Galaxy Fold, unlike the one sold in South Korea which supported 5G.

Inside, the phone features the Snapdragon 855 processor with a large 4380mAh battery. There are a total of six cameras on board, a triple camera setup at the back (16MP, f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor with a 12MP, f/1.5-2.4 sensor and a 12MP, f/2.4 telephoto sensor), a 10MP selfie shooter on the cover display and a 10MP and 8MP sensors placed on the foldable display.

Samsung launched its first smartphone with a foldable display in the first quarter of 2019. The Galaxy Fold was soon embroiled in controversy as the units allocated to reviewers started malfunctioning one by one within hours. Samsung had no choice but to postpone the launch and have the issues fixed. The redesigned Galaxy Fold is now being made available in wider markets. China too will be receiving the Galaxy Fold this month. On Weibo, Samsung posted “The Galaxy Fold is here. It is unlike any other mobile device. We have changed people’s perception of smartphones for future generations to come. Ingenuity arrives on November 8.” 

While the Galaxy Fold is currently available in numerous markets including India, the US, and South Korea, China was missing from the list. Samsung is rumored to offer the Galaxy Fold from 14,999  Yuan (~$2,120). There is no official confirmation on the pricing yet. 

The chaebol has reportedly sold over 500,000 units of the Galaxy Fold globally. The smartphone is likely to go out-of-stock soon after its Chinese launch. The Galaxy Fold rivals the Huawei Mate X, which launched in China this October at 16,999 Yuan (~$2,414). 

Hopefully, the 5G edition of the Galaxy Fold will be made available in China.  Samsung is also expected to make some announcements on the Galaxy W20 5G foldable flip phone at the same event.

Samsung Galaxy Fold Specifications and Features

The Samsung Galaxy Fold flaunts dual displays. While the primary display on the cover is a 4.6-inch unit, the secondary display is a 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED foldable panel. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 855 SoC with an Adreno 640 GPU. It features 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of native storage. The device draws power from a dual-battery setup equalling 4,380mAh and is equipped with fast charging and wireless charging. The 5G edition of the device has 4,235mAh battery. 

The Galaxy Fold uses a six-camera setup. The smartphone has one triple camera setup at the rear and another upfront. The rear cameras include a 16-megapixel lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with an aperture rating of f/2.2 and a 12=megapixel telephoto sensor. The primary selfie camera uses a 10-megapixel lens while two additional sensors of 10-megapixel and an 8-megapixel are placed above the foldable display.

Foldables are the new craze in town, and we already have commercial foldable devices from the world’s top two smartphone makers: Samsung and Huawei. While Samsung’s Galaxy Fold went on sale back in September in multiple markets, the Huawei Mate X foldable will go on sale in China on November 15. In fact, earlier today, even TCL showed off an impressive foldable phone with a triple-folding design. 

While we are all impressed with the flexible display on these foldables that transform them from a tiny smartphone to a large screen tablet, Meizu’s ex-VP, Li Nan, thinks these displays are better suited for smartwatches. He backs his statement saying that a flexible screen will allow smartwatches to increase their screen real estate without sacrificing on durability since the bend range is limited. 

Notably, flexible screens have been used in smartwatches before, and the Nubia Alpha is the best example of this design. The company has used a 4-inch 192×960 foldable display on its smartwatch shaped phone that allows it to wrap around a user’s wrist. 

Irrespective of Li Nan’s opinion, foldable smartphones will continue to pop-up in the market in the next few years. Xiaomi, OPPO, and other brands have already confirmed that they are working on a foldable phone. The Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Alpha is just a glimpse of our smartphone future with the help of flexible screens.

As people are slowly warming up to the idea of a foldable smartphone, Samsung wants to grab a big chunk of the market next year. The company has reportedly sold only around 500,000 units of the Galaxy Fold worldwide, but it has an ambitious sales target for the lineup in 2020. 

ETNews reveals that Samsung is aiming to sell nearly six million foldable smartphones in 2020. That’s quite an ambitious target for a phone featuring a yet-to-be-proven design and a price tag that’s out of reach for a majority of smartphone users. However, the report states that Samsung’s confidence in the foldable form factor has increased after the launch of the device. In fact, the company even considered setting a target of ten million foldable sales next year, only to bring it down to a more conservative 6 million. This is still higher than the IHS Markit estimate of just 3 million foldable shipments in 2020. 

The Galaxy Fold has already launched in major markets across the globe like South Korea, U.S., India, and will land in markets such as Japan, Poland, Mexico, and Switzerland later this month. Samsung should announce the successor to the Galaxy Fold around early 2020. It is expected to feature a clamshell design and should be more robust than the current generation model. The new model will reportedly shift from polyimide to ultra-thin flexible glass to remove the crease that’s visible on the current generation version. In the Q1 of 2019, Samsung launched its first foldable smartphone which, as we all know, is called the Galaxy Fold. Even though its commericial availability was delayed a couple of times due to display issues, it is still a remarkable device and Samsung is bound to be working on its successor. After all, this is one of the most distinguishing form factors the smartphone industry has seen in the last decade.

On August 29, 2019, Samsung was granted a patent by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for a foldable smartphone which supposedly corresponds to the second generation Galaxy Fold. Similar to the original handset, the illustrated device in the patent has two displays, out of which, the smaller display is mounted on the cover while the second foldable display is revealed when the device in it unfolded state.

The special thing about this foldable smartphone is its camera system. The device is designed in such a way that the camera sensor present on the inside can also double up as the selfie camera. While the bezel present above the outer display does not have a cutout to allow the inner camera to see through, it incorpoates several lenses that allow the device to achieve the desired functionality. The image shared below with arrows will help to better understand its working.

To put it in simple words, Samsung is trying to establish a thoughtful design which would allow its upcoming foldable phone to reduce the number of camera sensors whilst unaffecting its functionality. To recall, the original Galaxy Fold has a total of 6 camera sensors and these sensors don’t come cheap. Clearly, this will allow Samsung to reduce the cost of its future foldable devices as the cost saved by eleminating redundant camera sensors can be passed on to consumers which would make the device more enticing.

Taking this implementation a step further, the patent also talks about the possiblity of an under-display camera rather than one embedded in the bezel above the display. While a handful of companies including Xiaomi and Oppo have showcased a handset (1, 2) with selfie-camera concealed under the display, not much can be said about the image quality such devices can produce.

Therefore, we will have to wait patienlty to see if, such a feature makes it way to upcoming foldable devices from the company.

Until 2019, Samsung has had two lineups of high-end smartphones which include the ‘Galaxy S’ and ‘Galaxy Note’, however, with the introduction of the Galaxy Fold, it now has three. While the early generations of Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices had considerably different screen size, with the latest generation of smartphones that difference has reduced drastically.

For refernce, the Galaxy S10 has a 6.1 inch dipslay, on the other hand, the Galaxy Note 10 has a 6.3 inch display and this negligible difference might not be enough to justify having two entirely different lineups. Having said that, these lineups do have one feature that can easily draw a distinguishing line which is the ‘S-Pen’ found on Galaxy Note smartphones.

According to a freshly granted patent, Samsung is developing another foldable smartphone, but unlike the Galaxy Fold, this device is compatible with S-Pen and will support air gestures.

Both aspects i.e neglible difference between Galaxy Note and Galaxy S devices, and the newly patented foldable phone with S-Pen supports suggests Samsung might be “looking forward to unify the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Note lineup”.

Talking more about the Samsung smartphone from the patent, it has a clamshell like design which is dissimilar to the Galaxy Fold. Clearly, Samsung is not aimig towards making a smartphone-tablet hybrid, instead, the concept behind it seems similar to the foldable Moto Razr which is reproted to launch before the end of 2019.

Besides, the hinge of this Samsung smartphone can open upto an estimed angle of 270 degrees. In contrast, the Galaxy Fold was limited to just 180 degrees.

The patent also exhibits an interesting feature of the device that is being able to move icons or content from one half of the screen to the other without having to maintian a  continuous drag with stylus  or finger. Instead, the screen of such a device will be equipped with a special layer that can sense the tip of the stylus or finger without having to physically touch it. Therefore users can first select an icon by tapping on it and then they can move the stylus or finger in mid air (staying close enough so it can stay registered) to the other half even when in a folded state. The illustration shared below will make it easier to understand.

It is well known that Samsung Galaxy Fold’s display is made out of soft plastic and it can be easily scratched. Accordingly, Samsung will have to first overcome this hurdle in order to make a commercially available foldable smartphone that supports S-Pen.

While the launch of this device still seems distant, Samsung is expected to showcase its second generation of foldable handsets at the MWC 2020 event which is scheduled for 24th and 27th February.

All in all, nothing has been set in the stone and we would recommend taking this handset with a grain of salt until future developments.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold finally made its way out of South Korea recently. The company’s first foldable is already available to purchase in the U.S. and will soon be made available in other regions such as India and UAE. Now it looks like the first update to the Galaxy Fold 5G is rolling out to its users.

Even if you are a Galaxy Fold user, you may have nothing to get excited about this new update for two major reasons. First, this update is limited to the Galaxy Fold 5G edition that’s currently being sold in South Korea. If you remember, in the U.S., Samsung is selling the non-5G version of the device. Second, even if you are a proud owner of the Galaxy Fold 5G, note that the update is a minor one and doesn’t bring any significant new features to the device.

So despite being the first update to the Galaxy Fold since its release, most international users won’t be eligible for this one.

After the initial delays in its release, the foldable started selling in South Korea, and will soon be sold in the U.S. and India as well. But being a first-generation device, the Fold is incredible expensive starting at near $2000. But those who were hoping for something cheaper, we might have some good news.

According to SamMobile, Samsung is currently working on a slightly cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold. Not only that, this new device is said to have a wider global release. The same report further adds that Samsung could equip the new device with 256GB storage instead of 512GB to keep the pricing lower. Also, it could come bearing the model number SM-F700F. 

Releasing a cheaper foldable makes sense. With the current Galaxy Fold, Samsung is likely testing the reception for a new generation foldable design. And despite the initial issues, the phone looks to be doing well in markets like South Korea and the U.S. A cheaper device with a wider release would be the ideal next step for Samsung to make this new generation design available to a much large audience.

2019 was thought to be the year of foldable smartphones. But the hopes were quickly shattered with all major contenders facing technical difficulties with their design. Despite facing several reliability issues in the past, the Samsung Galaxy Fold was globally launched earlier this month. The South Korean tech giants plan to bring its first foldable smartphone to India on Oct. 1. The company has already sent our press invites for the launch event. The Galaxy Fold is scheduled to go on sale in the US on Sept. 27 following some heavy hardware upgrades to overcome the fragility issues.

While the additional precaution is a welcome move, Samsung seems to be taking a cautious step with the smartphone’s relaunch, given the device’s brief yet problematic history. Among the more common problems was the crease within the display, and the screen protector that some people happily peeled off, resulting in the display going dark.

Samsung Galaxy Fold Price in India  (Rumored)

There is no official announcement regarding the prices yet. But, judging by the prices in the US, the Galaxy Fold is likely to be priced around Rs. 1,40,000 (~$1,985) in India. The smartphone will be available via retail stores, but can only be purchased via pre-bookings. Galaxy Fold customers are entitled to receive exclusive access to a specialized customer assistance network, including 24×7 virtual support and mano-a-mano interactions with service personnel.

Xiaomi launched a spectacular smartphone yesterday, the Mi Mix Alpha featuring a 360° surround display that features a 180% screen to body ratio. The phone is nothing like the smartphones we’ve ever seen before, making an all-screen design very close to reality. But we couldn’t help but notice that the Alpha is awfully similar to the foldable Xiaomi prototype that featured a double folding design. Now, Xiaomi’s co-founder, Lin Bin has revealed why there are some similarities between the two.

Lin Bin reveals that the Mi Mix Alpha and Xiaomi’s foldable that was teased earlier this year were developed in sync with each other. In fact, both the projects have been assigned internal codes in the same series. The two projects were developed simultaneously but the company could overcome the technical challenges associated with Mi Mix Alpha’s project recently which finally enabled them to carry out a small scale trial production.

This makes sense because the Mi Mix Alpha looks like a permanently folded version of the dual folding screen protoype revealed by Xiaomi back in March. Lin Bin’s comment also confirms that the company is still working on the dual folding design. We can’t say when Xiaomi will officially release the handset but given how it managed to bring the Mix Alpha concept to reality, the foldable phone may not be very far off.

Still, both the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X foldable had to face numerous technical challenges before launch. The dual folding concept from Xiaomi looks really cool but it’s even more extreme than the single folding design used by both Samsung and Huawei’s foldable. So it remains to be seen if Xiaomi can bring the dual folding design to reality anytime soon.

The Galaxy Fold is already on sale in South Korea and goes on sale in the US next week, with a release expected on October 1 in India. Even the Mate X is finally going on sale in October, at least in China, confirms Huawei’s support. As the technology matures for mass production, we can expect to see better implementations of the foldable design in the coming years. And Xiaomi’s foldable could be one of those designs that make it compact and practical.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold is finally seeing a global rollout. After first releasing it in South Korea earlier this month, the phone is all set to go on sale in the US later this week. And a new report reveals that the Galaxy Fold will also make its way to India next week.

According to the sources at IANS, one of India’s leading news agencies, Samsung will announce the Galaxy Fold in India on October 1. The foldable flagship is said to be priced between Rs. 1.5 lakh ($2116) and 1.75 lakhs ($2469) in India. In comparison, the Galaxy Fold starts at $1980 in the US, with shipping set to start from Friday, September 27. The report further adds that the foldable will be available through select retail outlets in the country and only via the pre-booking model.

However, it looks like the craze for the world’s first commercial foldable is sky-high in Hong Kong. Resellers are reportedly selling the device for astronomical prices in the grey market.

The official price tag of the Galaxy Fold is 2.4 million won (~$2,011) in South Korea, the only market where the device is officially sold right now. But resellers in Hong Kong have already managed to pick up a handful of units in the initial batch. Given how only 1000-2000 units were reportedly shipped in this first batch, getting a Samsung Galaxy Fold internationally through conventional channels, especially in Hong Kong, is next to impossible. That’s why Hong Kong resellers are asking nearly HK$38,000 (~ $4,856) for the Galaxy Fold in the grey market. That’s 2.5 times the original price tag of the device!

And getting a unit will not be easy anytime soon, especially in a market like Hong Kong where Samsung is yet to announce an official launch date. So the resellers in the grey market are the quickest way to get hold of the device in the region.

The unique design of the Galaxy Fold necessitates app optimization. Since the app sizes and aspect ratios differ significantly when switching from the cover display to the main display, app optimizations ensure that they work flawlessly during the process.

But given the sheer number of Android apps available on the Play store, neither Samsung or Google can optimize all of them. For this, the Galaxy Fold features a special built-in app-optimization technology that automatically converts the app’s size and ratio to fit the display, with a tap of a button.

Samsung has even set up test labs for optimizing Android apps in Korea, the US, as well as China. For those who can’t physically access these labs, the company in collaboration with Google set up a ‘remote test lab’ which could be used by developers to optimize their apps using an emulator.

Samsung has finally relaunched the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable phone. The Galaxy Fold was first unveiled in February this year with the release set for April. However, the release was put off by Samsung following a number of issues that were encountered by early users. The foldable smartphone is now officially in the market again but with some improvements in its design and construction.

The overall design of the Galaxy Fold still remains the same as the ill-fated original version. That is a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display on the inside a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED panel on the outside. However, Samsung says it has fixed the hinge and the protective layer of the flexible screen. The foldable mechanism is now hidden behind a rubbery protective layer in order to protect it from dust and other particles getting in the mechanism through the foldable part. Samsung also extended the layer on top that protects the digitizer from scratches beyond the edges, so that it can’t be peeled accidentally.

The camera configuration and those of other hardware components are unchanged. The Samsung Galaxy Fold packs a total of six cameras and is still powered by a Snapdragon 855, coupled with 12 GB RAM and 512GB of storage. Keeping the lights on is a 4,380 mAh battery but the 5G model has a slightly lesser 4,235mAh battery due to the internal architecture.

The Galaxy Fold will go on sale for the first time tomorrow in South Korea. The phone will launch subsequently in select countries, including France, Germany, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The price has not been revealed but it is expected to retain the original price of around  €2,000.

Samsung‘s tribulations with its now-notorious Galaxy Fold haven’t been enough to deter the smart phone giant from pushing the device and idea further. After a long wait where Samsung claimed they were reworking the Galaxy Fold, it seems like the company is ready to reintroduce the device to the world.

Now, we expected to see a mention of the Galaxy Fold at IFA, but it seems Samsung already has a VIP pre-sale going on in South Korea. The VIP pre-sale consists of only 165 Galaxy Fold units which have been supplied to a dozen Samsung Digital Plaza stores in the country. VIP customers are reportedly able to choose their color combinations for the Galaxy Fold, and they’ll get a free Montblanc case to go with it.

VIP customers can pay the smartphone’s full price of 2,398,000 Won ($1975) and orders will apparently be fulfilled beginning September 11. Priority in terms of shipping will be given to VIPs according to their times of purchase. The report seems to mention that 10 Galaxy Fold units have already been pre-sold through at least one of Samsung’s Digital Plaza stores in just one day, which is fairly surprising considering the price.

For the rest of the non-VIP folk, the Samsung Galaxy Fold’s formal launch event will allegedly be taking place on September 6th in South Korea. Normal pre-orders in for South Korea will then begin on September 16th. We also expect it to make an appearance over at IFA Berlin. There’s even an online pre-registration form for registering interest for US and UK customers.
