In a rare public meeting held in Shenzhen, China, Ren Zhengfei, the CEO of Huawei Technologies, engaged in discussions with senior executives from PetroChina, led by Dai Houliang, the chairman of China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and PetroChina. The meeting, which also coincided with Dai Houliang’s visit to Huawei’s Computing Innovation Lab, focused on key agendas concerning corporate governance, digital transformation, and scientific innovation.

One of the primary discussion points revolved around PetroChina’s initiatives in low-carbon energy, highlighting their progress towards peak carbon emissions and their ambitious goals for doubling the contribution of low-carbon energy to their total output capacity within the next two years.

Ren Zhengfei – Huawei

The collaboration between CNPC and Huawei has yielded significant advancements, particularly in the development of a cognitive computing platform named E8. This platform leverages AI technologies to provide intelligent analyses for oil and gas exploration and production, marking a pivotal step towards modernizing operations in the energy industry.

Past collaborations between Huawei and PetroChina were also highlighted, including their joint efforts in building PetroChina’s first comprehensive energy service station in Beijing, integrating various energy services with non-energy businesses.

Ren Zhengfei’s recent public appearance highlighted Huawei’s financial performance in 2023, with profits doubling year-on-year despite US sanctions. Growth sectors for Huawei included cloud computing, with operations spanning over 170 countries and regions, encompassing digital transformation initiatives across industries, including energy.

The meeting between Huawei and PetroChina signifies a significant step towards fostering collaboration between technology and energy sectors, aiming to drive innovation and sustainability in the global landscape. As both entities continue to pursue digital transformation and scientific innovation, their partnership holds promise for addressing pressing challenges in the energy industry while unlocking new opportunities for growth and development.

Huawei had endured a series of setbacks after the US reined in a raft of sanctions more than 3 years ago. The heavy sanction regime which also affected its European operations led to a massive decline in its market share. A Huawei executive has laid its slide in fortunes on the US intervention in its operations through the sanctions. Richard Yu also dismissed Samsung as a small player in the smartphone market but for the US action.

Huawei’s Richard Yu

The severe US sanction regime had almost led to the collapse of Huawei. It declined from the second position in the smartphone industry as a result. However, in the past year, Huawei has continued to surge from the rubble. Huawei’s HamonyOS is one of its greatest achievements during the period. According to Yu, Huawei’s consumer business group’s CEO, Huawei could have been the second leading manufacturer after Apple. He made the claim at an automotive forum in China.

Samsung was at the top of the global market before the sanctions in 2019. However, Huawei’s annual growth forecasts predicted it could overtake Samsung within a few years. It is also noted that Huawei’s 50% annual growth rate was a remarkable performance. This could have put it at the summit of global smartphone manufacturers within a year.

The tech mogul stated this while addressing strategy experts and new recruits at an internal forum Thursday. The Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. CEO and founder said that while the firm was operating in unprecedented and troubling times, talented staff were being cultivated across the board.

The company’s R&D system alone comprises 90,000 employees, far more than one would see in a “Western” tech company, he said, which may be able to function at a high level with fewer people and more resources, but without Huawei’s tribulations would raise fewer “heroes”.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Commerce further tightened rules restricting the sale of microchips and other technology to Huawei, which effectively banned any company, anywhere in the world, from supplying it with chips unless approved by the U.S.

Regarding the latest round of U.S. hostility towards the Chinese tech company, which the Trump administration has said is based on unspecified security threats and Huawei’s alleged links with the Chinese military, Ren said, “It takes one U.S. government directive, and we have to change thousands of circuit boards, parts, and algorithms. Once we’ve made the changes, we have to do it all again… We end up making changes to our circuit boards on repeat.”

Currently, the company is the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. However, being No. 2 isn’t enough for the company as Huawei’s CEO Yu Chendong said in an post-launch conference interview that the company was well on its way to become the world’s number one in 2019 if not for the U.S. Ban.

Earlier this year, the Chinese tech giant had its foreign operations crippled as the company was placed on the Entity List by the U.S. Commerce Department. This essentially blacklisted Huawei and banned American based companies like Google to have trade or business relations with the company. After being cut off from Google, the company lost Android OS (the primary OS found in its devices) and even its ARM-based chipsets that powered its devices.

Editor’s Choice: Huawei Officially launches Worlds First One-Touch NFC Router for 399 Yuan ($57)

Just prior to the ban, Huawei had managed to take the number two spot away from Apple as the largest smartphone brand in the world. So it is not farfetched to assume that Huawei had a real chance of snatching the top spot from Samsung as well.

According to Richard, Huawei would’ve been the world’s number one brand if not for the ban this year itself. Furthermore, he said that people falsely assume that the brand is popular due to China and the Chinese people being patriotic; and went on to further back this statement with Huawei M6 tablet which reportedly sold over 2 million units worldwide. The senior executive stated that the most important reason for achieving such results is user satisfaction and not patriotism.

Going Forward, Huawei is seemingly confident about its future. Its indigenously built HarmonyOS or HongMengOS is expected to arrive in 2020 whilst the company plans on expanding further in the European regions.

Before now, the company has always insisted that it poses no risk to users’ data but Richard Yu, Huawei CEO of its consumer division, gained notoriety for his public outbursts about the US government treatment of the company. It may not be a coincidence that we hardly hear from Mr Yu and the company’s latest statement wasn’t from him but from Huawei’s highest executive who doesn’t seem to share the same exact same sentiment.

Huawei’s founder and CEO, Ren Zhengfei, granted a rare interview to the international media, aided by a translator, where he defended his company’s independence from Beijing’s control. However, quite surprising in Mr Ren’s praise of US President Trump, considering the frosty relationship China has had with the US government since Mr Trump assumed office, of which Huawei got caught in the middle. The Huawei CEO labelled Trump a “great president” according to the what his translator conveyed. He also extolled Trump’s bold moves that would be conducive for the development of industries in the US.

We doubt if Mr Trump thinks the same of the Huawei exec as Huawei came under suspicion as a result of Zhengfei’s history as a former soldier and a current member of the Communist Party. He’s adamant, though, that his political leaning has nothing to do with the way the company runs its business. The CEO assured that Huawei will always side with its customers when it comes to cybersecurity and privacy. He equally disclosed that there is currently no Chinese law that requires adding backdoors to software or hardware and neither has Huawei or himself received any request to provide customer data.

He did not rule out the possibility of the Chinese government making such obnoxious request someday since there are laws that require companies to cooperate and comply with such requests. However, Zhengfei disclosed that he is prepared to fight against any such request to hand over user data, should that day come. In Communist China, we don’t see Huawei winning such fight but chances of the Chinese government making such open request that will hurt the country’s investments overseas are very low.

Huawei has seen its efforts in developing 5G infrastructure scuttled in some countries like the US, Japan , New Zealand and Australia. As such, Zhengfei admits the year will be a tough one for his company. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that Huawei’s fate would be similar to ZTE which nearly went under after major sanctions from the US.

The CEO hinted that Huawei as of today has already sold 100 million devices. Last year, Huawei got to this very point of selling 100 million devices on September 12 and in 2016, it got to the point on October 14 while in 2015 it was few days to the end of the year before the brand was able to achieve to 100 million device sales. So this clearly shows that this year it achieved that milestone in the least amount of time.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu Announcing The Kirin 970

Early last month Huawei officially confirmed the aspiration of the brand to ship 200 million smartphones in 2018, but we’ll have to wait and see if that actually pans out. If this goal is achieved, it would be an increase of 47 million over 2017 sales. That being said, the brands P20 and P20 Pro have been doing well with a combined sales that have already surpassed 6 million this year and it is believed that in few months, the Mate 20 is expected to join the fray. Huawei’s launch of the Nova 3 and 3i should also help Huawei’s bottom line.

Huawei’s smartphone shipments this year is doing just fine and if it continues to remain strong throughout the rest of 2018, Apple might lose their number 2 spot to Huawei as the second manufacturer worldwide by Q1 2019. The number one position is currently held by Samsung and Huawei has a very long way to go before reaching that level.

Recall that Beijing has been at loggerheads with Washington over the latter’s 25% tariff on $34 billion worth of goods from China last Friday. Beijing was quick to retaliate in the same measure, imposing tariffs of the same worth on products from the U.S. The U.S government is expected to impose an additional $16 billion worth of imports from China but Mr Hu believes the company won’t be targeted by the US government in its trade war with China.

Huawei’s Chairman could be regarded as holding a very lofty and ambitious expectation considering the company’s history with the U.S. Huawei has had to face several oppositions from the U.S government regarding the use of its hardware in the U.S. The government and even lawmakers have expressed concerns over the possibility of Huawei’s hardware being used by the Chinese government to spy on U.S citizens. Huawei has repeatedly expressed its innocence, stating that its software and hardware are in no way more vulnerable to attack that of other OEMs. So, in the event of the sanctions being extended, the U.S won’t mind slamming one on Huawei if possible.

Related: US Government Warns Users Not To Buy The Huawei Mate SE

However, the indices looks good for Huawei as there aren’t so many products it relies on the U.S for, neither does the company ship much of its hardware to the U.S. ZTE’s heavy reliance on U.S hardware such as chipsets is one reason why the latter found its operations entirely crippled after the Commerce Department hit it with a denial order over trade embargo violations this spring. But according to Mr Hu, the largest telecom equipment manufacturer in the world still wants to utilize “the best technologies” in its products. That approach will see it continue buying U.S. chips this year, irrespective of any tariffs or other burdens, according to the executive.

While some had UFS 2.1 storage, some came with UFS 2.0 flash storage and yet some P10 units had eMMC 5.1 memory. Huawei CEO Richard Yu had to personally offer some clarifications on why the company had to do that. While the dust generated from that issue is finally dying down, another controversial issue, even weightier, is brewing up but Huawei seems poised to tackle it before it snowballs into something serious.

A recent rumour emerged in China that Huawei’s mobile phones were installed with a software that can monitor the device and collect personal data of the user without permission. Huawei promptly issued a response denying the existence of such software on its smartphones and described the rumours as malicious and is aimed at tainting its business reputation. Huawei also set up a team to work in conjunction with law enforcement to trace the origin of the rumour and has also indicated its intention to take up the matter legally against any company identified to have a hand in the origin of the rumour.

Most importantly, Huawei says it attaches great importance to user’s privacy and that it is focused on innovation and development of new products. It called on other OEMs to join hands with it to build a healthy business environment. Huawei recently announced its H1 2017 earnings and it showed the company is not only consolidating its grip on the number one spot in the domestic market, it is also making progress abroad and could catch up with Apple in the next few years. The rumour could be from one of Huawei’s competitors trying to sabotage the company but we’ll stick to what we know so far, as the source of the rumour is still unknown.

That is the case with the Huawei smartwatch presently. According to South China Morning Post, Huawei CEO Eric Xu has expressed his doubts about the prospects of smartwatches in the face of the booming smartphone market.

Mr Xu, who also doubles as Rotating CEO, was responding to a question on whether the development of end-user products like smartwatches would stifle its smartphone business. This was at the company’s Global Analyst Summit 2017 held in Shenzhen on Tuesday. “I am always confused as to what smartwatches are for when we have smartphones…..Therefore, when the smartwatch team in Huawei presents their ideas to me with great excitement, I keep reminding them to consider whether there are tangible needs [for these products] in the market,” the CEO was quoted to have said.

But come on, Huawei has two smartwatches in its kitty! The latest version, Huawei Watch 2, was released barely a month ago packing Google’s latest Android Wear 2.0. Perhaps, Mr Xu’s confusion stems from the fact that the smartwatch comes with a SIM card slot and so can be used to make or receive calls. The first generation of Huawei smartwatch powered by Android Wear was released in 2015.

Read Also: Huawei Watch 2 Hands On (Video): New Android Wear 2.0 With Three Day Battery Life

Moreso, the smartwatch market has not grown as fast as it was anticipated to do and similar views have repeatedly been expressed by many analysts and smartphone company executives, who are still wondering when, or even if, smartwatches will catch on with the general public. Hopefully, that breakthrough moment would land soon and Huawei wouldn’t like to be left out of the party when the boom time arrives. Perhaps, that is what is sustaining its current efforts in the development of more wearables.

He had said that such high resolution on a smartphone display was unnecessary and adversely affected the battery life of the phone. But recently, in a weibo post, he revealed that Huawei smartphone will soon come equipped with Quad HD displays. And a couple of days back, we saw on TENAA that the upcoming Huawei Honor V8 was going to be the first Huawei smartphone with a 2K display.

Now, Richard Yu reveals more information about his decision to go with 2K display this year. He revealed earlier today that 2K display technology brings a lot of problems like heat, high power consumption, decline in life etc. Many manufacturers used this technology in advance at the cost of the experience of the user. But now, he states that Huawei has perfected 2K screen technology. Another good reason for using 2K display is that it is a perfect fit for VR.

So, now, it makes sense to use 2K screens on smartphones. We have seen many companies going back from 2K to 1080p on their flagship phones due to the disadvantages associated with such high-resolution displays. But we will have to wait and see Huawei’s take on 2K displays and how better are they as compared to current competitors in the market.

Interestingly, the Huawei P9 series doesn’t have a model with a 2K screen. Instead, the Honor V8, which is supposed to be the affordable flagship lineup will get such a high-resolution variant. Another highlight of the V8 series is going to be the dual cameras at the back, but it is said that the setup is without the Leica certification.

The Chinese giant announced its first ever smartwatch at the event and it is one of the best smartwatches that we have seen till date.

Huawei CEO, Yu Chengdong was present at the event and in an interview, he said that the smartphone industry will reshuffle in the next three to five years. Only three major smartphone manufacturers will survive in the market by that time. Naturally, he considers Huawei to make it to the top three, however, the rest of companies, even some from the top will soon be forgotten.

Chengdong added that Huawei makes sure it stays ahead of the competitors by investing significantly in R&D. In fact, according to him, only few companies in the industry can match Huawei’s R&D team. Although Huawei is considered in the class of Xiaomi, OnePlus ones and Lenovo, he believes that the company is good enough to compete with giants such as Apple and other silicon valley tech companies.

He says that their true competitors are not these Chinese companies but giants from the western world. In fact, he says that most Chinese smartphone makers will soon perish giving way for Huawei to become the market leader.

IDC reports show that Huawei is indeed growing rapidly. Last year, the company generated sales of over $74 million, growing by more than 54% as compared to 2013. The market share of the company rose from 4.8% in 2013 to 5.7% last year.

Although the company failed to get to the $80 million sales target, Chengdong adds that it was due to the increased focus on high end devices. The company now aims to sell about 90 million to 100 million smartphones this year.

Given the timing of the launch, the Huawei watch will directly compete with Apple Watch. However, he says that his company’s watch is much better than Apple.

Huawei is yet to expand aggressively in developed markets like US, and there have been several allegations about national security threat by using Huawei’s equipments. However, he dismisses all these allegations by saying that one of the main reasons Hauwei decided to adopt Google’s Android platform for its phones and tablets is because of the vast variety of third party apps and features on the Android OS. Moreover, a third party OS will definitely help the company fight such allegations.

When talking about Xiaomi, he said that most people refer to the company’s marketing and sales when it comes to measuring success, and Xiaomi has managed to work on them. However, in the long run, technological innovation will drive the growth of the company and hence, the companies that look quite successful right now may not survive in the long run.

Huawei still cannot be regarded as one of the top smartphone makers, but it shows promise and we will have to wait and watch how the company evolves in the next few years as a consumer products manufacturer.
