In early August, Xiaomi rolled out MIUI 12 update to Redmi S2 in China. This smartphone is also known as Redmi Y2 in India. It was the second device in the now-defunct selfie-focused Redmi Y series lineup of phones. Now, almost two months later, this variant of the handset, as well as the global variant of Redmi S2 that was sold in countries like Indonesia, has begun to receive the update to the latest version of Xiaomi’s mobile operating system.

The Xiaomi Redmi S2/Y2 launched in the first half of 2018 with MIUI 9.5 based on Android Oreo out of the box. The device was later updated to MIUI 10 and MIUI 11 subsequently. However, it only got a single Android update (Android Pie). Now, the company has started seeding out MIUI 12 to this phone.

The MIUI 12 global update for Redmi S2/Y2 is currently being rolled out to random users with build number V12.0.2.0.PEFMIXM. If these users don’t face any serious issues, this very same build be seeded out to more users and maybe even ever unit in the coming days.

Having said that, MIUI 12 is the last major update for Xiaomi Redmi S2/Y2. Anyway, it is worth noting that this smartphone may receive some bug fix builds and security patches if needed.

Xiaomi has been rolling out MIUI 12 stable updates to its huge portfolio of eligible devices worldwide. As most of the high-end and mid-range smartphones have received it, the company has now turned toward budget handsets. Currently, the Remi S2 and Redmi 6 Pro from 2018 have begun to get the update in China.

Both the Redmi S2 and Redmi 6 Pro launched with MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo out of the box. They were later updated to MIUI 10, followed by Android Pie and  MIUI 11. Now, they have also started to receive MIUI 12, however, only in China for now.

The MIUI 12 stable update for Redmi S2 and Redmi 6 Pro comes with build number V12.0.4.0.PEFCNXM and V12.0.1.0.PDICNXM respectively. However, it does not bring all the features like AOD+ as these phones sport LCD panels.

But it does bring all the major new features like new animations, icons, control center, revamped settings, granular privacy controls, floating windows, Dark Mode 2.0, and more.

That said, we can now expect the global variants of these handsets to get the update very soon. For those unaware, Redmi S2 is also known as Redmi Y2 (India) while Redmi 6 Pro was also available as Mi A2 Lite in certain regions but that device won’t get MIUI 12 update as it is part of Android One program.

Xiaomi isn’t really great at updating the Android version of its phones as it mainly focuses on MIUI. In recent times it has tried to provide at least one Android version update for its lineup. However, recent developments show the Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, and Redmi S2 will not be moving past their original Android version even though Xiaomi initially planned otherwise.

All three phones launched last year with Android 8.1 Oreo with a planned upgrade to Android Pie. However, the list of Xiaomi devices getting various OS upgrades has now been updated to reflect that plans have been changed and the update to Android P has now been suspended for the three phones.

This is sad news for owners of these devices. However, they will continue to receive MIUI updates which might bring new security patches.

The Redmi S2 which is also known as the Redmi Y2 in India launched in May 2018 while the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A were announced in June 2018. The S2 has a 5.99-inch display, a Snapdragon 625 processor, up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It has 12MP+5MP dual rear cameras, a 16MP selfie camera, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It also has a 3080mAh battery.

The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A have the same 5.45-inch 18:9 HD+ display powered by 3000mAh batteries. The former has an Helio P22 octa-core chipset while the Redmi 6A is powered by the quad-core Helio A22. Both SoCs are 12nm chipsets and use the same PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The Redmi 6 comes with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of storage while the less-expensive Redmi 6A comes with 2GB/3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB of storage. You also get dual rear cameras on the Redmi 6 (12MP + 5MP) and a single 13MP on the Redmi 6A. Both phones have 5MP selfie cameras.

Xiaomi has confirmed the list of smartphones that will be treated with Android 9 Pie OS update. Before rolling out the stable update to as many as 10 smartphones, the Chinese manufacturer will be releasing the global beta edition of the update. Among them two are scheduled to receive the beta version by the end of this month. Five more will be getting it in the next quarter and there is no timeline decided for the remaining three phones.

The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Y2 (known as Redmi S2 in China) are scheduled to be treated with Android 9 Pie beta edition within this quarter. In the second quarter, it will be coming to handsets like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Mi Note 3.

The Android 9 Pie global beta update status for Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi 6X and Mi 9 Explorer Edition is still in development stage. For Chinese audience, the update will include MIUI China ROM whereas the global users will be provided with MIUI Global ROM. Once the beta edition is available, the company will announce its arrival through its forums and app.

The aforementioned list had surfaced on the official MIUI forums site. An administrator on the discussion board claimed the that the list is incomplete. He stated that once existing devices are provided with Oreo update, the list will be updated with newer phones that can be upgraded to Android 9 Pie OS.

Last month, we saw variants of the Redmi Note 5/Redmi Note 5 Pro running Android Pie on Geekbench. Xiaomi has now confirmed that it is indeed bringing Android Pie to the phone and some other models too.

According to a post on the official MIUI forum, Xiaomi is recruiting beta testers for Android Pie for the Redmi Note 5, Mi 6X,  Redmi S2, and Redmi 6 Pro. Apart from the Redmi Note 5, the other three phones launched with Android Oreo out of the box, so they should at least get one major OS upgrade. The Redmi Note 5 launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and already got an update to Android Oreo, so the fact that it is getting Android Pie is a big deal.

The above models are the Chinese models but the Android Pie update should eventually roll out to the Redmi S2 which is known as the Redmi Y2 in India and the Redmi Note 5 which is sold as the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Mi 6X and the Redmi 6 Pro already run Android Pie outside China since they are the Android One phones the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite respectively.

On May 31, Xiaomi had announced the all new MIUI 10 ROM. At the beginning of June, it had rolled out the Developer ROM closed beta in China for first batch of devices and the same devices had received public beta by the end of the month. Today, the Chinese manufacturer has released the developer ROM closed beta to the second batch of devices.

The first batch of devices that were treated with MIUI 10 Developer ROM included Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, Mi 6, Mi MIX 2S, Mi MIX 2, Mi MIX, Mi Note 2, Redmi S2 and Redmi Note 5. Since the registrations for the Developer ROM closed beta ended yesterday in China, the company has made it available to the second batch of Xiaomi phones starting from today. After the closed beta testing comes to an end, the public beta is likely to arrive for the same second batch of devices by the end of this month.

The second batch of 17 Xiaomi phones that are now receiving the MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta are Xiaomi Mi Note 3, Mi 5S Plus, Mi 5S, Mi 5X, Mi 5C, Mi 4C, Mi 4S, Mi Max, Mi Max Prime, Mi Max 2, Redmi Note 5A, Note 5A Prime, Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon variant), Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi 5, Redmi 5A and Redmi 4X.

The company has stated that the arrival of the public beta of Mi 5X will be delayed. The specific release time for the smartphone will be announced through its social media channels. By this, Xiaomi is bringing the latest MIUI 10 to a total of 27 smartphones.

The MIUI 10 Developer ROM closed beta can be installed in two ways. Devices on MIUI 6, 7, 8 and 9 developer version can navigate to System Settings > My Device > MIUI version and then access the direct OTA update. It is recommended to back up devices on MIUI 6, 7, 8 and 9 stable versions are recommended ad then install the upgrade via fastboot with unlocked bootloader.

If you live in Spain and have been waiting for the Redmi S2, we have good news for you. Xiaomi’s mid-range selfie king is now available in Spain sort of.

The Redmi S2 first launched in China about a month ago before heading to Indonesia shortly after. Last week, it launched in India as the Redmi Y2.

The Redmi S2 packs a 5.99-inch HD+ display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 625 chipset – the same SoC in the Mi A1, Redmi 5 Plus and lots of other Xiaomi phones. The version available in Spain comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

The highlights of the phone are its cameras. A 16MP sensor sits above the display with its own LED flash. It can shoot portrait photos and comes with AI features that help your selfies pop. There is a 12MP + 5MP dual camera combo on the rear.

Other features of the Redmi S2 include a 3080mAh battery, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, an IR sensor, and a 3.5mm audio jack. It also has dual-SIM support  (nano only) and a dedicated MicroSD card slot. The Spanish version of the Redmi S2 has support for LTE bands 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 20, 38, and 40.

Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Y2 smartphone in India to replace the Redmi Y1 phone that was launched in November last year. The handset is a rebranded Redmi S2 phone that was launched in China in the previous month. Compared to the last year’s Redmi Y1, the successor handset has come with numerous improvements like 18:9 display, improved processor, top quality selfie camera and dual rear cameras.

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 Specifications and Features

The Redmi Y2 wears a metallic body and it comes in colors like Elegant Gold, Rose Gold and Dark Grey. It features a 5.99-inch IPS LCD screen that produces FHD+ resolution. The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM editions of the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 are powered by Snapdragon 625. The handset features a dedicated slot for adding a microSD card.

The bestselling feature of the Redmi Y2 is the soft-LED equipped with 16-megapixel camera that comes with AI capabilities. It has a large aperture f/2.0 and offers a field of view of 78 degrees.

It can shoot better photos in low light by merging four pixels into a single Super Pixel that has a size of 2micron. The resultant images have reduced noise and better clarity. The Auto HDR feature can automatically adjust the brightness while shooting photos. The Al Beautify 4.0 feature enhances 10 kinds of facial features like skin tone, eyes, nose and lips while capturing selfies. AI Portrait mode is an optimized feature that effectively blurs the background by focusing more on the subject.

The Redmi Y2 borrows the 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup from the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It is equipped with features like dual-tone LED flash, AI portrait shots, AI low-light photography and HDR.

For security, Xiaomi has included AI-based facial recognition through the camera as well as fingerprint scanner. After announcing the Redmi S2 smartphone in Indonesia on 11th May, Xiaomi has officially launched the Xiaomi Redmi S2 in Indonesia. It is priced at Rp 2.39 million, which roughly converts to $168.

The Redmi S2 is all about the selfie camera. Not just the hardware of the front-facing camera, but the smartphone also comes packs AI-based algorithms to ensure that selfies turns out perfect. The 16-megapixel front-facing snapper comes with f/2.0 aperture, 79.8-degrees wide angle lens. It features large 2μm pixels, which helps in delivering good low-light photos.

Further, the selfie camera comes equipped with a soft front flash as well, which Xiaomi claims mimic natural light as well as HDR. It has two major AI modes — AI Portrait and AI Beauty. Coming to the rear camera, there’s a dual camera setup consisting 12MP primary lens and a 5MP secondary sensor. It comes with phase detection autofocus (PDAF), LED flash, facial recognition, AI portrait mode, and HDR.

The smartphone comes with a 5.99-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz.

It packs 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot, which enables users to further expand the storage capacity up to 256GB. There’s another variant of the phone which comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage but it seems that the company has not launched this variant in Indonesia.

There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back panel as well as Face Unlock feature for added security. The device runs on Android Oreo-based company’s own MIUI on top and is fuelled by a 3,080mAh non-removable battery with 31 days of standby time, according to the company.

In Indonesia, the Redmi S2 will be available in three color options — Grey, Gold, and Rose Gold. Priced at Rp 2.39 million (approx. $168), the smartphone will be available for purchase from 25th May.

Xiaomi is gearing up for the official announcement of its entry into new markets in Europe. French and Italy (offline) are two of the new markets and a new teaser hints at a new device coming to both countries.

Looking at the design, there are two Xiaomi devices that have that design and they are the Redmi S2 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s. The Mi 6X has the same camera design and fingerprint placement but is curvier, which is why we have not included it.

We won’t be surprised if it is the Mi MIX 2S. The Mi MIX 2 is sold on the Xiaomi Italy online store already, so the Mi MIX 2s will be this year’s flagship for the country.

Xiaomi may also surprise us and launch both the Redmi S2 and Mi MIX 2s in both countries. Both phones belong to different categories, so it won’t be an odd decision.

Xiaomi will unveil the new phone in Milan on May 24 at 5:00 pm local time. It will open its first Mi Store in France on May 22.

Seeing as Xiaomi is marketing its new phone using the same words, it’s just a matter of putting 2 and 2 together.

Xiaomi went official with the Redmi S2 in China recently with the device clutching a decent specs lineup inside a solid body. Xiaomi Redmi S2 is a low-end midrange smartphone which Xiaomi says is targeted as selfie lovers.  The device comes with several features to back that up including a large 16MP selfie camera with AI features. On the design aspect, Xiaomi Redmi S2 utilizes a 5.99-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The device looks very much similar to the Mi 6X which was also launched recently but in this case, the display has an HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720p. Also, it features a different-looking 2 string U-shaped antenna design. The Redmi S2 also packs a metal back on which a fingerprint sensor is mounted. The device is also equipped with dual cameras at the rear comprising a 12MP + 5MP sensors with configurations such as a f/2.2 lens, PDAF, LED flash, facial recognition, AI portrait mode, and HDR.  In addition, the chin features a MicroUSB port and speakers, while the top has a headphone jack and infrared blaster. 

Just to remind us of the internal specs, the Redmi S2 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. There are two storage variants available: 3+32GB and 4+64GB. One interesting thing about the S2 is that it comes with dual SIM slots and a third microSD slot which allows for expansion of the storage up to 256GB. This is similar to what we saw on the Redmi Note 5A, so you won’t have to sacrifice a SIM slot for the microSD card like what is obtainable on the Redmi 4-series.

Other features of the Redmi S2 include a 5V/2A 3080mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.2, Infrared, and Wi-Fi n. There are three color options available, rose gold, platinum silver, and champagne gold but the unboxing pictures are of the platinum silver variant.

As for the prices, the 3+32GB version of the Redmi S2 is priced at 999 Yuan ($157) while the 4GB RAM+64GB version will retail for 1299 Yuan ($204). The device will go on sale on May 17 simultaneously on major online stores like Mi store, Suning Tesco, Tmall, and even via offline stores in China. Xiaomi’s best selfie Redmi smartphone is here and it’s called the Redmi S2. The company has explained that the ‘S’ in the name stands for the ‘Selfie Series’ which kicks off yet another new sub-lineup in the company’s long list of smartphone releases. Xiaomi made it quite clear that the S2 is made for selfie lovers and it was no surprise that the initial half of the event was spent talking about its capable front shooter. It looks like the phone will compete directly with OPPO’s A3 and Vivo’s Y85 as the company compared these two with its new model multiple times during the event.

Usually, I would start the article with the design and other departments, but in this case, it’s best to talk about its front camera first.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 Front Camera & AI

If you are a selfie lover, Xiaomi has got you covered. The Redmi S2 is all about its front facing shooter. There’s a very good reason why Xiaomi is highlighting its front camera. It’s not just because of the hardware inside, but also the AI algorithms that ensure that your selfies turn out to be perfect.

On the hardware side, the Redmi S2 comes with a 16MP front shooter, which isn’t very big as compared to selfie centric phones of 2018 like the OPPO F7’s 25MP shooter. However, the front camera features large 2μm pixels which should deliver pretty good low light selfies. Well, to further aid its front camera in low light, you get a soft front flash as well, which Xiaomi claims mimics natural light.

On the software department, the Redmi S2 uses AI to perfect your selfies. There are two major AI modes, the AI portrait and AI beauty (makeup) mode which will ensure that you have beautiful selfies from its front camera. For example, the AI portrait mode can detect different aspects of a selfie to blur out the right areas. So, even if you are waving at the camera, the AI is smart enough to ensure that your hands aren’t blurred in the photo. Further, the AI makeup beauty mode will make sure that your lipstick, eye shadow and a lot of other features are given due highlight in your selfie, making it pop out well. And guess what, you get HDR on the front as well!

Now that we’ve talked about the ‘Selfie’ features of the Redmi S2, let’s move on to other departments.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 Design:

The Xiaomi Redmi S2 adopts the tall stature found on recent smartphones, thanks to its 18:9 5.99-inch display. The design is reminiscent of the recent Redmi phones, but the antenna lines are a bit different. The phone uses a 2 string U shaped antenna design, which could be inspired from OPPO’s R9S. If you remember, it had a three string design and was quite unique in its time. The back is made out metal and features a fingerprint sensor too. The bottom features a MicroUSB port and speakers, while the top has a headphone jack and infrared. There are three color options available, rose gold, platinum silver, and champagne gold.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 Hardware Specs:

Xiaomi Redmi S2 doesn’t have any surprises in this department. The phone features the tried and tested, kind of old, Snapdragon 625. Even in 2018, this particular Qualcomm chip manages to stand on its own as a capable processor for low-end mid-rangers. There are two storage variants available: 3+32GB and 4+64GB. If you find the ROM to be a bit low, just expand it using the dedicated MicroSD card slot (up to 256GB). The slot is similar to what we saw on the Redmi Note 5A, so you can use two SIM cards and a MicroSD card slot at the same time.

The display is of 5.99-inches with 18:9 aspect and 1440 x 720p HD+ resolution. To be honest, the display isn’t the phone’s biggest highlight. Coming to the rear camera, you get a 12MP + 5MP rear camera. The primary camera is said to be the same one used inside the Xiaomi Mi 6. The setup consists of a f/2.2 lens, PDAF, LED flash, facial recognition, AI portrait mode, and HDR.

Other features of the Redmi S2 include a 5V 2A 3080mAh battery, a rear placed fingerprint sensor, Face Unlock, Bluetooth 4.2, Infrared, and Wi-Fi n.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 Price:

The 3+32GB version of the phone will go on sale for 999 Yuan ($157) while the 4+64GB version will retail for 1299 Yuan ($204). The company will be throwing in a free TPU case with your purchase. The Redmi S2 will go on sale on May 17 on major online stores like mi store, Suning Tesco, Tmall, and even via offline stores in China.

The Redmi S2 by itself looks like a pretty good selfie focused phone. But if you are not a selfie fanatic, there are plenty of better options out there, even from Xiaomi. Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi Note 5 are all priced around the sub-1500 Yuan segment, so it looks like the S2 should cater to a niche audience in China.

The Redmi S2 is being touted as having impressive cameras. For a phone priced at about $150 (3GB variant), it is alright to have doubts about the camera performance, but you may want to reconsider based on these camera samples.

Two new photos have surfaced online that show off the bokeh effect of the Redmi S2. The first image is when the focus is on the object in the foreground. It is a close-up shot and it is impressive. The object really pops out against the blurred background.

However, we got blown away when focus was shifted to the objects in the background, leaving the coffee cup blurred. Pretty neat, right?

The photos were shared on Weibo by Xiaomi’s co-founder Lin Bin ahead of the phone’s release later today.

The Redmi S2 has dual cameras on its back. The primary camera is a 12MP sensor and it is paired with a second 5MP sensor. The camera is said to have AI features baked into it for AI portrait mode. The 16MP front-facing camera also has an AI beauty mode.

The entire specs of the Redmi S2 have appeared through its TENAA listing. Also, the Chinese manufacturer also teased some of the key features of the phone in the recent past. The Redmi S2 features a full metallic chassis that measures 160.73 x 77.26 x 8.1mm weighs 170 grams. It is expected to be available in colors like in colors like Grey, Pink and Gold. The rear panel has u-shaped antenna design like the Xiaomi Mi 6X and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones. Xiaomi already released a poster confirming that the Redmi S2 will be launching on May 10. The poster shows the rear of the phone but there is a new one that gives us a much closer look.

The new poster shows a gold version of the phone unlike the first which has a pink variant. The phone has a split antenna line design which reminds us of the OPPO R11. Right under the upper antenna lines are dual rear cameras.

The rear cameras are arranged vertically and in the same design as that of the Mi MIX 2S and Mi 6X. The poster confirms one of the cameras is a 12MP sensor and there are AI features baked into the camera software.

The picture also shows the Redmi S2 has its fingerprint scanner on the rear and the volume rocker and power button on the left.

The phone will launch with a 5.99” 720 x 1440 display. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor paired with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It will run MIUI 9 based on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

Last year Xiaomi released its first Android One phone, the Mi A1. Even though it was just a rebranded Mi 5X with stock Android instead of MIUI, the phone was well received. Right up to this moment, the Mi A1 is one of the best phones in the $200 segment.

Now that the Mi 5X has gotten a successor in form of the Mi 6X, fans of the brand are looking forward to when it will be announced as the Mi A2 – Xiaomi’s second Android One phone.

However, while there is still no confirmation the Mi 6X will be launched as the Mi A2 outside China, the guys at XDA say there is confirmation that the Mi A1 will indeed have a successor but it won’t be the only Android One phone from Xiaomi this year.

First, let’s have a look at the details of the Mi A1’s successor.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 is codenamed “tissot_sprout”. “Sprout” is actually a name unique to first-gen Android One devices. In new firmware files, the name “jasmine_sprout” was found.

The firmware files were gotten by @FunkyHuawei, a name which should be familiar to those who have heard of FunkyHuaweiClub, a service for updating, rebranding (changing the region), and unbricking Huawei and Honor devices.

He was kind enough to share them with XDA Developers, although they couldn’t get the full dump of the firmware but were able to view key files from a partial dump and find out key info about the phone.

Not only did they find the “sprout” suffix, there are also no MIUI system apps in the build. The Android framework, SystemUI, and other system apps are stock Android-based.

There is also a file with the name “com.google.android.feature.ANDROID_ONE_EXPERIENCE.xml” under system permissions. It is said that this special permission can be read by apps to guard whether or not the app should have access to the device. A similar file is said to be found in Google Pixel phones to guard apps like the Google Camera. Lastly, the device has A/B partitions for seamless updates.

The firmware makes no mention of the device’s official name but there are some other hardware details. First, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 660 as revealed by the build.prop file and the mmi.xml file that contains hardware testing parameters.

There are also multiple camera-based parameters that are similar to that of the Xiaomi Mi 6X such as the EXIF model and the front camera. As seen below, the name “WAYNE” which is the codename for the Mi 6X is present in the firmware so also is (Sony) IMX376 which is the camera sensor found on the front of the Mi 6X.

These list of evidence point at jasmine_sprout being similar to the Mi 6X. When it does launch, it will come with Android 8.1 Oreo and support Project Treble.

Now that we are done with the Mi A1’s successor, let’s dive into the details of the second Android One device from Xiaomi.

While the first Xiaomi Android One device for the year will be from the Mi family, the second is likely from the Redmi family. The CEO, Lei Jun, actually made a statement (below) related to it last week.

XDA Developers have found details of the device including its codename which is “daisy_sprout”. They say the device is powered by a msm8953 a.k.a. Snapdragon 625 processor just like the Mi A1 but will likely have a cheaper price tag.

Xiaomi already released a Snapdragon 625 Redmi phone recently and that is the Redmi 5 Plus but it also has another one on the way which is the Redmi S2.

Going by the CEO’s statement above and seeing as the Redmi 5 Plus is already available in India as the Redmi Note 5, it doesn’t make sense that it will release an Android One version of the same phone. This leaves us with the Redmi S2 as the  Android One Redmi device.

There is no info as to when both devices will launch but we believe they will arrive together.

Just before the Mi 6X launched, another similar-looking phone appeared on TENAA. The phone which has a 5.99” display and dual rear cameras is expected to launch as the Redmi S2.

Xiaomi hasn’t revealed a launch date yet but there seems to be nothing hidden about the device anymore other than the price. Not only have live photos of the phone been published online, there is also a hands-on video of the device.

The hands-on video is from Czech Republic website dotekomanie.cz. The source says the phone is already on display at a Mi Store in the Czech Republic. So, it is safe to say Xiaomi has not only entered a new market in Europe but the Redmi S2 may even be a Europe-first device.

Since the phone is already available on display it explains how they were able to get a hands-on video. They were also able to confirm the specs.

The unit in the video is the gold variant. Other than the arrangement of the sensors on the front and the design of the antenna lines, this could pass for the Mi 6X.

The Redmi S2 has a 5.99-inch display with a 1440 x 720 resolution. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

The phone has dual rear cameras – 12MP + 5MP – and a 16MP sensor with its own LED flash in front for selfies. It also has a 3,080mAh battery and runs MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo. These specs place it firmly in the mid-range category.

With the recent developments, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 may be upon us much sooner than expected, most likely during the week. Not only will Xiaomi announce a new phone but it should also announce its entry into a new European market.

Notwithstanding, Europe won’t be the only one getting the Redmi S2. It will also be available in Vietnam. This is based on a picture of a flyer (above) which lists the price of various phones including that of the unreleased Redmi S2.

The prices are in Vietnam Dong and the Redmi S2 has a VND 3,999,000 price tag. This roughly translates to $176 which is a bit on the high side. But since we do not know the memory configuration of the device, we’ll have to wait till the official launch before passing a verdict.

Last week, a new Xiaomi smartphone was certified by China’s TENAA. The device notably features a design which looks very similar to the recently unveiled Mi 6X but obviously, the specs didn’t align. Turns out the model is the Xiaomi Redmi S2 and while Xiaomi is yet to officially introduce the model, we have spotted some live pictures of the smartphone. The live photos were uploaded by a Czech Republic-based blog but the author failed to mention the actual source of the device. However, the pictures seem to have been taken from someone who had the opportunity to handle the real machine.

The design of the Redmi S2 is not in anyway different from the Mi 6X. The device is expected to feature a similar 5.99-inch display with the 18:9 aspect ratio. However, the display resolution will be an HD+ (1440 x 720pixels) resolution. The device also seems to retain the ultra-thin build of the Mi 6X but we can’t tell from all of the pictures if the 3.5mm audio jack will also be missing on this model. Also visible is the U-shaped antenna design at the back and the dual camera setup stacked vertically. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Specs wise, the Redmi S2 will feature a Snapdragon 625 chipset clocked at 2.0Ghz. The device will also come in 2GB RAM, 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM variants as well as 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options. Keeping the lights on is a 3000mAh battery. This model will likely not come with fast charge support.  The rear cameras are said to be a 12MP + 5MP combo while for selfies, the device will feature a 16MP sensor. Providing the interface will be the Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5. Finally, the Redmi S2 will be available in several color variants, including Pink which is the colour of the model on display.

In the previous week, it was revealed that Xiaomi is prepping up to launch a new low-end smartphone for China and India. The device is expected to hit the market with Redmi S2 moniker. It has already received approved by TENAA authority and now it has also been certified by 3C body in the home country.

Recent reports reveal that the upcoming Redmi S2 has a model number of M1803E6E. The same model number along with other variants such as M1803E6T and M1803E6C have received certification 3C authority in China. The 3C approval did not reveal any information on the specs of the phone, but it has confirmed that it will carry support for 5V/2A charging.

The TENAA images of the Redmi S2 has revealed that since it sports a full screen design and vertical dual camera setup, its design is similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The device measures 160.73 x 77.26 x 8.1mm and it weighs 170 grams.

The 18:9 aspect ratio display of the Redmi S2 measures 5.99 inches and it produces HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. It is speculated to be fueled by Snapdragon 625 SoC. The handset is expected to be available in multiple RAM and storage editions.

The 16 GB storage variant has 2 GB of RAM and its 32 GB storage model includes 3 GB of RAM. The highest configuration model has 64 GB storage and 4 GB of RAM. It also features a microSD card slot. It is loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo.

TENAA listing has revealed that its dual camera setup includes a 12-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel sensor. It has a selfie camera of 16-megapixel. The S2 will receive power from 3,000mAh battery. Leaked firmware files of the S2 has revealed that it will be supporting features like face unlock, Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Portrait Mode. According to TENAA listing, the Redmi S2 will be available in multiple colors like Black, Blue, Gold, Gray, Pink, Red, Rose Gold, Silver and White. However, the Chinese manufacturer may only make few of the color variants available at launch.

There is no information on the launch date of the Xiaomi Redmi S2. Now that that the smartphone has bagged TENAA and 3C certifications in China, it is likely that it may get announced as early as next month.

Since it supports HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels, it can be assumed that it will be arriving as a low budget phone. It receives power from a 3,000mAh battery.

Leaked firmware files had revealed that the Redmi S2 is driven by Snapdragon 625 SoC that features a 2.0 GHz octa-core processor. The TENAA listing has also revealed that the alleged S2 is fueled by a chipset that offers the same clocking speed.

The M1803E6E Xiaomi phone is expected to hit the Chinese market in RAM variants like 2 GB, 4 GB and 6 GB. These models will respectively feature internal storage of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The handset will also feature a microSD card slot. It will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo and is expected to arrive with the latest MIUI skin.

For photography, the handset is equipped vertically arranged dual rear cameras on its rear panel. The TENAA listing reveals that it will include 12-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual camera setup and a front-facing camera of 16-megapixel. Through the firmware files, it has been revealed that the Redmi S2’s dual cameras are expected to be come with features like Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Portrait Mode. Also, the selfie snapper is pegged to carry support for facial recognition feature. The handset is expected to be available in multiple color choices such as Black, Blue, Gold, Gray, Pink, Red, Rose Gold, Silver and White.

Xiaomi has recently launched the Mi MIX 2S and Redmi Note 5 smartphones in China. The home country will be receving the Xiaomi Mi 6X phone on April 19.  In India, the Chinese manufacturer has launched Redmi Note 5, Redmi Note 5 Pro and Redmi 5 phones so far in this year. There is no confirmation on when India will be receiving the Mi MIX 2S flagship, but leaked firmware files have revealed that Xiaomi may soon launch a new entry-level phone called Redmi S2 in India. The information about the Redmi S2 has surfaced through its leaked firmware files.

Through the leaked firmware files, it has been found that the Redmi S2 will be featuring an 18:9 aspect ratio display that will support 720 x 1440 pixels resolution. However, the exact size of its display is not available yet.

The firmware files of the Redmi S2 shows has references for msm8953 which suggests that it is fueled by Snapdragon 625 mobile platform. Yes, it is yet another Xiaomi phone with SD625 onboard! In the recent past, Xiaomi has released a number phones with SD625 such as Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi Note 5, Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi 5X, Mi Max 2, Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 4X, Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 Prime.

The base model of the phone will feature 16 GB of storage. At present, there is no information available on the other storage model of the Redmi S2. Also, there are no details available on the amount of RAM it will be featuring. It can be assumed that the handset may feature 2 GB of RAM. There could be 32 GB model with 3 GB of RAM.

It will be fueled by 3,080mAh battery.

It is speculated that Xiaomi may release the Redmi S2 smartphone in markets like India and China since the firmware contains details for its Indian and Chinese variants. At present, there is no information available on the launch date and pricing of Redmi S2.
