Unfortunately, since the GSMA has canceled this year’s edition of the event, Xiaomi has been left with no choice other than to announce the cancelation of the global launch event of its Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro phones scheduled for February 23.

The official statement put up on Twitter says a separate launch event in Europe will be arranged for a later date. This launch event will be for the Mi 10 series and “more amazing products”.

This is the first time the event has been canceled since it was renamed to Mobile World Congress in 2008. Prior to 2008, the event has been called multiple names including GSM World Congress and 3GSM World Congress.

It was also first held in Brussels and then moved to different cities including Nice, Berlin, Lisbon, Athens, and Madrid. In 1996, the event was held in Cannes and it remained that way for 10 years before finally settling in Barcelona.

Earlier today, Realme announced that its product launch scheduled for February 24 at MWC will now be an online event. This year should have been the manufacturer’s first time of attending MWC but it has now been forced to cancel the offline event.

OPPO has also rescheduled its Find X2 launch event that was originally set for February 22 at a pre-MWC event. The much-awaited flagship will now be unveiled in March. However, the exact date remains unknown.

HMD Global also announced yesterday, prior to the cancellation, that it will not be attending MWC 2020 and will announce a new date for the launch of its products.

Surprisingly, Huawei announced yesterday it has a pre-MWC event set for February 23. The event will most likely get canceled now that MWC will no longer hold this year.

However, instead of debuting Mi 7, the Chinese firm introduced the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S flagship phone powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset in March. After its debut, it was speculated that the Mi 7 would get official within the first half of this year. However, the Xiaomi Mi 7 rumors have considerably reduced in the recent weeks. Not only multiple proofs of the Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone have surfaced in the past few days, but also the Chinese firm has confirmed that it will be launching as the 8th anniversary edition smartphone. However, why did Xiaomi decide on calling its upcoming flagship phone as Mi 8 and not Mi 7? The company has released a new poster today to answer this question.

According to the below shown poster, since the phone turned out to be way beyond expectations, the company opted to go with Xiaomi Mi 8 moniker for its upcoming flagship.

Leaked images and a hands-on video of the alleged Xiaomi Mi 8 has revealed that the handset would be sporting a notched display design like the iPhone X. Its notch is wider as it is said to feature structured light 3D module. Hence, the Xiaomi Mi 8 is rumored to debut as the first Android smartphone with 3D facial identification feature.

The other rumored features of the Xiaomi Mi 8 include 6.01-inch OLED display, under-display fingerprint scanner, Snapdragon 845, 6 GB / 8 GB of RAM, 64 GB/ 128 GB of storage, AI camera enabled with 2x optical zoom, Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 10, and wireless charging support. The rumor mill has already revealed the speculated pricing of the phone. The 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM edition of the Xiaomi Mi 8 is rumored to cost 2,799 Yuan (~$438). The higher model having 128 GB storage + 8 GB RAM is likely to carry a pricing of 3,199 Yuan (~$500). Another report claims that the base model may cost 2,999 Yuan (~$469).

The huge number 7 on the poster denotes that there are only 7 days remaining for the forthcoming annual product launch event. The May 31 event will also mark the arrival of MIUI 10. The company is also expected to announce the Mi Band 3 fitness tracker at the same platform.

The product is the 139th product that tech giant would be churning out from its crowdfunding platform. The new product is manufactured by Chengdu Fun Sleep Technology Co., also known as 8H which is known for its quality products like the 8H Mattress launched last year.

The 8H fabric sofa comes with a minimalistic design and it utilises the simple spring and clothes sofa pattern. It is available as a single sitter, double sitter and three-sitter form, each with a different price tag but the price starts at 1,599 Yuan. You also get the option of three colours to choose from. There is an Autumn Blue colour, Ascot Gray and England Gray colours.

Design wise, it features a simple yet classic style design. The backrest and sit use removable cushion while the handrail is widened to guarantee comfort. Despite the presence of cushion, there is still high-carbo steel spring underneath for extra comfort and high weight support. The fabric is made from high-grade natural linen material. It is soft, delicate to touch, and is treated to ensure water doesn’t seep into the fabric if there is a spill. The sofa fabric is also removable and can be taken off for washing easily.

Perhaps, the most spectacular aspect is that the sofa comes with removable buckle bolt design. The launch of the Mi Mix alongside the Mi Note 2, perhaps contributed greatly to the shift of focus to large bezel-less displays. Seems attention is now heading back to OLED displays and as usual, Xiaomi is taking the front seat.

A report on South Korea media indicates that Xiaomi has signed an agreement with Samsung Display (SDI) for the supply of OLED panels for its 2018 flagship. The report claims Samsung Displays which is an arm of the conglomerate will supply rigid OLED panels to Xiaomi that are 6.01 inches in sizes. The first shipment which is about 1 million units will be done in December this year while the next batch said to be 2.2 million units will ship in the following month (January 2018).

The report also stated that Xiaomi’s well-publicised initial plan to use more sophisticated LG OLED panels was thwarted due to delays in LG’s production plans. It was LG who supplied the flexible OLEDs used on the Mi Note 2. The LG panels were supposed to be 5.49 inches in size but will be flexible OLED panels. Unfortunately, LG Display’s new plant that was supposed to mass produce the flexible OLED panels wasn’t ready on time and would commence production in August. It is not as if the flexible display would enable us to bend the smartphone like an elastic just yet. There will still be a rigid body and a front glass on top the display such that you might not even feel the effect of the flexible display. Well, except in a situation where the smartphone takes a serious fall that should ordinarily have shattered the display. Apart from its flexibility, LG is said to have effected some changes in the display panel resolution from FHD to QHD.

If Xiaomi is going to stick to its routine, the first flagship that we may be seeing in 2018 will likely be the Mi 7. The fact that it is a rigid OLED panel takes some juice out of the story, though. But then, OLED panels offer quite a lot in terms of display picture quality and with Xiaomi’s pedigree, the panel could be deployed to produce a stunning, true flagship. Sadly, we are at a loss as to whether the Mi Note 3 which would have OLED display would still be launched this year. The Redmi Pro 2’s own OLED panel may be sourced from domestic manufacturers in China

The Snapdragon 835-powered device would again be available for purchase today in the Xiaomi Super Brand day on Tmall and Xiaomi has assured that there is large stock available for the sales festival. No doubt, the Mi 6 stock shortage isn’t as acute as was experienced on models like the Mi Note 2 or Mi Mix. However, there is no denying that there is not enough stock as the units available is far lower than the demand for the Mi 6 flagship.

According to an insider source, the reason for the shortage isn’t intentional to create artificial scarcity, neither is it as a result of a slow production process per se. But according to the source, the grade of material used on the design of the Mi 6 is too high and the key components are not supplied in high quantity to meet the demand. So, there is low supply of the key components needed to assemble the Mi 6. The major component which slows down the production of the Mi 6 shell is the ceramic glass body it uses, which is said to come with up to 8 times the hardness. The body material is difficult to produce and also costly and thus makes the supply of the Mi 6 limited.

Another reason is said to be the Snapdragon 835 chip the flagship uses which is still short in supply as compared to demand. The Snapdragon 835 chipset is manufactured using a new 10nm process and that has not helped matters. The fact that Samsung also needs the flagship chip for its Galaxy S8 and S8+ which is in high demand makes for a complex situation.

Overall, the Xiaomi Mi 6 flagship processor, memory, camera modules and other core components are said to fall within the final price tag of 2499 Yuan. So, Xiaomi isn’t offering the device for a price less than the production cost. Meanwhile, the Mi 6 is still available for purchase on Giztop if you’re outside of China and want this beautiful flagship.
