Samsung foldable display earns military-grade durability certification

Samsung Display has made a significant advancement in the durability of its foldable technology. The company’s 7-inch foldable panel, featured in its latest generation of foldable smartphones, has successfully passed the MIL-STD 810G durability tests.

These tests, established by the U.S. Department of Defense, rigorously assess equipment’s resilience in extreme conditions. Samsung Display’s achievement marks the first time a foldable panel has earned this certification.

Independent safety science expert, UL Solutions, put the panel through a series of trials designed to simulate harsh environments.  As per Samsung, the foldable display demonstrated remarkable resilience under the following conditions:

  • Extreme Temperatures: The panel maintained functionality after being exposed to freezing temperatures (-10 degrees Celsius) while covered in a layer of ice. It also withstood rapid temperature fluctuations between -32 and 63 degrees Celsius.
  • Shock Resistance: The display was dropped repeatedly from a height of 1.22 meters (standard phone-use height) in various orientations without malfunctioning. Additionally, it withstood forces up to 10.5 times Earth’s gravity, similar to those experienced during astronaut training.

This certification reinforces Samsung’s position within the foldable display market.

Jo Yong-Seok, head of marketing for Samsung Display’s Small to Medium Size Business Unit,  noted, “Through this military spec certification, it has been confirmed that Samsung Display maintains a firm technological lead in the foldable display market, which has become the next-generation form factor. Foldables are moving beyond the prejudice of being less durable, and we expect foldable panels to be utilized in a wider variety of devices and environments.”

While foldable phones often have a reputation for being fragile, Samsung is actively working to make its devices more durable. They were the first to introduce an IP water-resistance rating to foldable, and now they’ve earned military-grade certification for their displays. This, honestly, is a major step forward for foldable technology!

Samsung led India tablet market in 2023, Realme made it to top 5 but not Xiaomi

IDC has released a report on the Indian tablet market for the year 2023. The data shows some interesting insights.

Overall, companies shipped 4.01 million units throughout the year. This number happens to be 24.9% lower than 2022.

The detachable segment grew by 17.1% YoY, while the slate category declined by 33.3%.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 Plus

Lower shipments of tablets are attributed to a sharp decline of 42.3% YoY in the commercial segment. This occurred due to the delay or cancellation of a few government deals. The education segment suffered the most with a 53.7% YoY decline compared to SMBs’ 25.9% YoY drop.

On the other hand, the consumer category only registered a growth of 1.9% YoY.  However, online channels witnessed a strong growth of 54% YoY as opposed to an 11.9% YoY growth by retail channels.

Talking about brands, Samsung was the clear winner with a 39.5% market share. Lenovo came second with a 14.3% share, closely followed by Apple in third place with a 13.9% share.

The last two players in the top 5 are unexpected. Acer claimed the fourth position with a 7.3% share backed by government-driven projects. Whereas, Realme instead of Xiaomi came fifth with a 6.8% share.

The tablet market is forecasted to further slow down in 2024 due to reduced demand in the commercial category. At the same time, tablets are expected to face strong competition from Chromebooks and entry-level Android notebooks like JioBook.

Lava Blaze Curve 5G specifications and images leak online

Lava, the Indian smartphone manufacturer, has been actively hinting at the upcoming release of its Blaze Curve 5G model. But, the company hasn’t given any official details yet, like the design or release date.

However, a recent leak has revealed some details about the design and when it might be launched.

Tipster Mukul Sharma (via X/Twitter) shared real-life photos of the device, confirming several rumored aspects. As the name suggests, the Blaze Curve 5G will feature a curved display.

This design choice extends to the back panel, which also curves along the edges, which should improve the phone’s ergonomics. Nevertheless, this wouldn’t be the brand’s first use of a curved-edge OLED panel, as the Lava Agani 2 5G camera is already equipped with one.

The camera design takes a page from the recent iPhones. However, unlike iPhones, the camera lenses are individually placed within their separate rings rather than grouped within an island.

According to the tipster, the primary camera will use a 64MP Sony sensor. However, specifics regarding the additional camera lenses have not yet been disclosed.

Additionally, the leak suggests the Blaze Curve 5G will sport a 120Hz AMOLED display and will be powered by a MediaTek chipset. However, specifics regarding which MediaTek chipset and whether it belongs to the Helio or Dimensity series, remain under the wraps.

Moreover, while an official launch date is uncertain, the leak indicates the Lava Blaze Curve 5G could potentially debut in the first week of March.

The company has been teasing the device since early January, so despite the leaks and rumors, we shouldn’t be too far away from the official launch.

Huawei may integrate NearLink into an upcoming MateBook enriching its ecosystem with faster connection speeds

Rumors are swirling about the integration of Huawei‘s StarLight (or NearLink) technology in its upcoming Huawei MateBook X Pro. This move promises to improve the user experience by offering lightning-fast wireless communication capabilities between StarLight-compatible devices such as the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 3.

Huawei says its StarLight tech offers 6 times faster transfer speeds while consuming less power

StarLight technology, also known as NearLink, boasts significantly faster data transfer speeds and ultra-low latency compared to traditional near-field wireless communication systems. Huawei says that StarLight consumes 60% less power while offering 6 times the transfer speed as compared to the traditional systems. If these speculations hold true, Huawei could be on the brink of setting a new standard for connectivity in the laptop market. StarLight is tailor-made for applications requiring high-speed data transfer and minimal delay, such as augmented reality and virtual reality.

The potential inclusion of StarLight technology in the Huawei MateBook X Pro represents a significant leap forward in wireless connectivity for its laptops. Currently, only a select few Huawei devices, including the immensely popular Huawei Mate60 series and MatePad Pro 13.2, support StarLight technology. If Huawei expands this capability to its MateBook lineup, users can expect a more seamless and efficient wireless experience within the ecosystem, whether they’re transferring files, streaming media, or engaging in interactive content.

The move comes amidst a shifting landscape in the personal computer market, particularly in mainland China. Despite a 16% year-on-year decline in shipments of personal computers in mainland China during the third quarter of 2023, Huawei has emerged as the third largest laptop manufacturer in terms of market share. With sales surpassing industry stalwarts like Dell and Asus, Huawei’s strategic positioning underscores its commitment to innovation and meeting evolving consumer demands.

As Canalys predicts a modest 4% growth in personal computer sales in mainland China for 2024, Huawei appears poised to capitalize on this momentum with its forward-thinking approach to technology integration.

Oppo Watch official strap clearance sale brings down the price to just ¥1

Oppo debuted its first smartwatch called Oppo Watch in 2020. It was announced alongside the Oppo Find X2 series in March of that year.

The wearable was released in select global markets later that year. To date, it remains the only proper smartwatch from the company to launch outside mainland China.

Almost four years after its original debut, the smartwatch’s official straps were sold at the lowest price ever earlier today in China.

OPPO WATCH

The Oppo Watch was released in 41mm and 46mm variants. Both variants use different-sized straps.

The official straps for the wearable not only come in various colors but are also made of different materials. Users can choose between fluoro rubber, nylon, leather, and stainless steel.

These straps carry varying price tags. However, for a limited time, all of them were up for sale for just ¥1 each earlier today. This clearance sale was live on Oppo’s official website.

It was a steal deal for someone owning an original Oppo Watch in China. However, we don’t think there are many active users of a nearly 4-year-old wearable, which was released with an outdated 28nm Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2500 chip even during its time.

We don’t know how long the company provided software support for this wearable. The Chinese version boots the ColorOS Watch based on AOSP, while the global variant with a better Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset shipped with Wear OS.

As far as specs are concerned, the original Oppo Watch offers a 1.91 OLED display with curved edges, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, single-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, and optional eSIM.

The Realme RMX3851 runs on a SoC code-named “pineapple” (model number Snapdragon SM8635). This chip has been the subject of speculation before and is said to belong to the Snapdragon 8 series, possibly a slightly toned-down version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

The “pineapple” codename further supports this theory, as it aligns with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s internal codename.

Anyway, the listing shows an octa-core architecture for the “pineapple” chip. It has a clock speed of 3.01GHz for its high-performance core, 2.61GHz speed for the four performance cores, and 1.84GHz clock speed for the three efficiency cores. Additionally, it features an Adreno 735 GPU for graphics

With these specifications, this new mysterious Realme smartphone is able to achieve a Geekbench score of 1512 in the single-core test and 3799 in the multi-core test. The listing also reveals that the phone runs on the latest Android 14 OS and will offer up to 16GB of RAM.

In addition to the Geekbench listing, the Realme RMX3851 has also been certified by the EEC, but the certification doesn’t reveal any further details about the device.  It’s likely that additional details about this smartphone will surface in the coming weeks or months.

While details on the RMX3851 remain uncertain, Realme is actively preparing to launch the Realme 12+. It’s an affordable addition to the Realme 12 series and is currently set to debut in Malaysia, with a possible India launch in early March.
