Apple Calls on Samsung and LG for the Development of ‘Bezel-less’ iPhone

Apple has been a force in the smartphone market for years with its iPhones. Even though it sells fewer units than Samsung, the company still makes more money because it sells more high-end models. However, despite this success, some people criticize Apple for not being innovative enough. For example, rivals like the Galaxy S series have been working to perfect the bezel-less full-screen experience for the past few generations. On the other hand the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 series have been criticized for their screen to bezel ratios. However, according to recent reports, Apple is working with Samsung Display and LG Display to develop a bezel-less OLED display for the iPhone. Here are the details…

Apple iPhone Bezels Are Getting Smaller, But Will They Ever Disappear?

As you know, Apple prefers to focus on developing its own technology rather than manufacturing it. This means they rely on manufacturers like Foxconn and TSMC to actually make their products like iPhone and Mac. The story is similar for screen technologies. The company doesn’t make their own screens, so they work with companies like Samsung and LG. So, if the tech giant wants to make a phone with a bezel-less OLED display, they’ll have to collaborate with these competitors.

Bezel-less iPhone concept
example concept

However, creating an iPhone with no bezels is not an easy task. To achieve this, Apple would need to move all the electronic parts that currently live in the bezel to underneath the screen. This involves making big advancements in two technologies called “Thin Film Encapsulation” and Under Panel Camera. TFE, is like a protective coat for the screen, made of several thin layers of special materials. This “coat” protects the OLED screen from getting damaged by moisture and oxygen. Apple is asking for these protective layers to be even thinner than they are now.

In this way, the company plans to achieve a full-screen experience not only by making the frames thin by simply arranging the circuits, but also by placing sensors such as the front camera and Face ID under the screen. Although similar technology is already used in some Android models, the image clarity is not up to par due to insufficiently thin screen layers. Imagine looking through a window with a mosquito net; you can see outside, but the net affects the view’s quality. This could be a problem for a phone known for its camera quality. And it’s not just Apple; other big players like Samsung, Huawei, and Vivo also believe this technology needs more development before it’s ready for their top-tier models.

Furthermore, there are additional concerns to address. Apple is reportedly worried about potential antenna interference, which is a critical issue. Plastic is an excellent material for signal transmission, which is why we can find plastic lines on the stainless steel frames used in iPhones. However, these lines have faced criticism in the past due to their negative impact on the phone’s durability. Despite using plastic frames on the display for smooth signal traffic, they may not be enough to solve the problem.

Relocating the antennas beneath the display could lead to interference with cellular and Wi-Fi signals, creating further complications. As a result, the development of the much-awaited ‘bezel-less’ iPhone might take an extended period to complete. Consequently, Apple’s plans for releasing a smartphone with a bezel-less OLED display remain uncertain. Nevertheless, reports suggest that the company is actively collaborating with Samsung Display and LG Display to overcome these technical challenges. If they succeed, Apple’s bezel-less iPhone would undoubtedly mark a significant innovation in the smartphone market.

Android 14 Will Get SMS Via Satellite Feature, Pixel And Samsung Galaxy Phones Will Receive First

Apple introduced the Satellite Connectivity feature on iPhone 14 series last year. It was a groundbreaking feature for smartphones as it allows users of the device to send emergency message alerts in remote places where there is no cellular or WiFi coverage without any special hardware. Apart from Apple, Huawei also added support for satellite connectivity in the Mate 50 series and P60 series smartphones. Now, this feature is expected to make its way to Android phones.

Android 14 to get SMS via Satellite feature

The satellite connectivity feature for Android phones will mark a significant advancement in mobile communication technology. A tweet by TeamPixel FC twitter account revealed that Android 14 will gain the ability to send SMS via satellite connectivity feature. The final stable version of Android 14 is expected to be a few weeks away.

The user also mentioned in another tweet that devices require appropriate hardware for the feature to work. Hence, it will up to the phone manufacturer. Additionally, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy are said to be among the first phones to come with SMS via satellite feature. Regardless, it will be a baked-in feature in Android 14 for devices that will support the technology.

Samsung was expected to include the SMS via Satellite connectivity feature on the Galaxy S23 series but passed it up as it wasn’t ready. However, the next-generation Galaxy S24 lineup is tipped to pack the technology.

Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite has turned out to be a life-saving feature in many situations. Hence, it will be a potentially helpful feature for Android phones in the future.

Tecno Camon 20 Pro Review: Budget Phone with Excellent Camera Experience

Tecno Camon 20 Pro is the upgraded version of last year’s Camon 19 Pro, and it offers more than just an attractive design. With its budget-friendly price tag, this smartphone is a pleasant surprise for smartphone enthusiasts who are looking for great hardware without breaking the bank. The rear of the phone features a slightly frosted texture that not only adds a luxurious touch but also provides a satisfying tactile feel. The aesthetically pleasing styling, combined with the frame’s sheen that resembles that of an iPhone, gives the Tecno Camon 20 Pro a premium look without the high price tag.

Tecno Camon 20 Pro Design

The Camon 20 Pro follows the trend of contemporary Android smartphones with a puzzle deconstructionist (this is the brand’s official description) design. Inspired by postmodern architecture, it features a textured leather back with a unique pattern and a pentagon-shaped camera module.

The design not only adds a touch of luxury but also effectively hides fingerprints and smudges. Despite having a plastic frame, the smartphone exudes a premium look and feel.

In terms of ergonomics, the Camon 20 Pro sports flat edges instead of curved ones, making it comfortable to hold. The right spine of the phone houses the volume rocker and power button, while the bottom edge features a USB Type-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a speaker grille.

There is an additional speaker on the top edge, providing stereo sound output. The left edge houses the SIM-ejector tray, which conveniently has a dedicated slot for a microSD card.

Display

The smartphone features a vibrant 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a centered punch-hole design. It offers a snappy 120Hz refresh rate, which is the highest in its segment. The high refresh rate applies seamlessly to both the user interface and supported apps, ensuring smooth and fluid interactions. Moreover, users have the flexibility to adjust the refresh rate dynamically or choose from fixed options of 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz. This level of customization is not commonly found in mid-range smartphones.

The display of the Camon 20 Pro impresses with thin bezels, excellent viewing angles, and impressive brightness levels, making the text legible even under direct sunlight. Additionally, the smartphone is Widevine L1 certified, allowing users to stream content from OTT platforms in FHD resolution.

Camera

As a camera-centric smartphone, the Camon 20 Pro 5G features a triple camera setup on the back. The star of the show is the 64MP RGBW (G+P) main sensor with a large f/1.65 aperture lens and OIS. This main sensor is designed to enhance light sensitivity and improve low light performance. Accompanying the main sensor are a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro unit.

The camera performance is satisfactory as long as the AI feature is turned off. When AI is enabled, it tends to oversaturate colors, resulting in unnatural-looking images with a loss of details and dynamic range. However, with AI turned off, the images appear more balanced, with sharp details, realistic shades, and well-preserved highlights. The smartphone’s night video capturing capabilities suffer from noise and fair light detection, but overall, it performs well considering its price point.

On the front, the Camon 20 Pro 5G boasts a 32MP snapper in a punch-hole setup. In daylight, the front camera captures decent selfies with good detail and accurate skin tones.

However, in indoor or dimly lit environments, the details appear soft, and the colors appear slightly pale. The portrait mode adds a nice blur effect to the background, although the edge detection could be improved.

Performance

The Camon 20 Pro comes with Helio G99 platform. It’s not a flagship SoC, but it still performs admirably considering its affordable price. It effortlessly handles essential communication and navigation apps without any lag or slowdown. Additionally, it provides a satisfactory browsing experience for those moments of leisure.

In addition to that, this smartphone also offers decent gaming performance. While there might be some initial stuttering, games like PUBGM run smoothly on the Camon 20 Pro when configured with the right settings. It is possible to enjoy gaming sessions during your daily commute without any major issues. Moreover, the phone’s back cover effectively dissipates heat, reducing the need for an additional case.

OS & Battery

Running on Tecno’s custom HiOS 13 skin atop Android 13, the Camon 20 Pro offers all the functions and abilities expected from other custom Android skins. However, it does come with some pre-installed bloatware and notifications that cannot be uninstalled.

The Camon 20 Pro is equipped with a powerful 5000mAh battery, which ensures that you won’t have to worry about running out of battery power throughout the day. Whether you’re constantly using resource-intensive applications or indulging in occasional gaming sessions, this smartphone can withstand the heaviest strain and still manage to last a full day on a single charge. Moreover, if you use the phone more conservatively, you can expect even greater battery life.

In the rare event that your battery does run out, the Camon 20 Pro comes with a 33W fast charger. This ensures that your phone gets powered up quickly and efficiently. In just about 90 minutes, the charger can replenish the battery from completely empty to a full charge, allowing you to get back to using your phone without any significant downtime.

Verdict

Overall, the Tecno Camon 20 Pro is a solid flagship-killer smartphone with a price that falls within the mid-range category. Although some users may find the camera’s AI feature finicky, it can be easily remedied by turning it off. Once users get the hang of the device, the Camon 20 Pro transforms into a fully-fledged daily driver that could be one of the top choices in 2023 in this price segment.

Sony Xperia 5 V will come with fewer cameras and new design

Sony is known for releasing its Xperia 5 series phones in the second half of every year. These handsets usually go official at IFA, which takes place in September.

Thus, the Xperia 5 V is also expected to launch around the same time this year. Before that happens, an official video advert of the device has leaked on the internet.

Let’s check out the details revealed in this video.

Sony Xperia 5 V

The promotional video of the upcoming Sony Xperia 5 V was shared on Reddit by user JB2unique (via Android Authority). The video showcases a revamped design and a significant change compared to previous models.

As per the video, the Xperia 5 V will sport a new design. The rear camera island will be different from the handset’s predecessors.

The camera housing will not only look different but will only include two cameras instead of three.  Presently, it’s not known whether the phone will miss out on the telephoto or the ultra-wide camera. However, the Zeiss T* coating will be retained.

Unlike most smartphones on the market, the Xperia 5 V will come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, just like its forerunners. Finally, it will be available in three colors, such as white, blue, and black.

Historically, the Xperia 5 lineup has been similar to the Xperia 1 with some differences here and there. But with one less camera and a different design, we are not sure if the newer models will be near identical to the Xperia 1 V.

Anyways, we are looking forward to more leaks related to this Sony product in the coming days. We will likely learn almost all important things about this device, just like others.

First iPhone Delay in 6 Years? Apple’s iPhone 15 Could Be Delayed

Apple had planned to launch the iPhone 15 series in September, but recent reports indicate a change in plans for the tech giant this year. Instead of its typical September reveal for its new generation of iPhones, the launch has been pushed back slightly to October. This is a surprising change, as Apple has not delayed the launch of its iPhones in the past, even during the pandemic. So why is the launch date changing? Here are the details…

Apple’s iPhone 15 Launch Date in Doubt

As you know, September is a very important month for Apple. The company has introduced almost all of its phones, including the latest iPhone 14 series, in September, and this has become a tradition. However, a report by Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan suggests that the iPhone 15 series could be delayed by a few weeks. Mohan said that the delay is due to supply chain problems, and it could hurt Apple’s third-quarter revenue.

An analyst is a professional who gathers, interprets, and uses data to solve problems, make recommendations, and tahminler.

Wamsi Mohan expects the company to make $87.1 billion in revenue in the third quarter, below the $91.6 billion that other analysts were expecting. He also expects sales of 48 million iPhone units in the September quarter, below the Street consensus forecast of 51 million. Mohan did not give a specific reason for the alleged iPhone 15 launch delay other than “supply chain problems”.

If the iPhone 15 does launch in October, it would be the first time that Apple has delayed the launch of its flagship iPhone lineup since 2017. The iPhone X was delayed by a few weeks due to production problems. It remains to be seen whether the iPhone 15 will actually be delayed. However, Mohan’s report is a sign that there are some concerns within Apple about the launch of the new phone.

What is Stacked Battery Technology that’s expected on Galaxy S24 series & iPhone 15

In recent weeks, there have been rumors circulating about the potential use of stacked battery technology in the upcoming Galaxy S24 series and even in the anticipated Apple iPhone 15 series. This innovative technology, traditionally utilized in the EV industry, offers numerous advantages that can greatly enhance smartphone battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
galaxy-s23-ultra

For those curious about the specifics of stacked battery technology, here are some additional details to shed light on the subject.

What is Stacked Battery Technology?

Stacked battery charging is a new battery technology that is being developed for smartphones. It is designed to increase the battery capacity of smartphones without increasing their physical size. This is achieved by stacking multiple battery cells on top of each other, instead of placing them side-by-side.

Legion Phone Duel battery
Many manufacturers currently adopt dual batteries for faster charging

There are multiple benefits to stacked battery charging. Firstly, it enables a higher battery capacity within a compact space, a crucial factor for smartphones where users expect extended battery life without compromising device size. Secondly, stacked battery charging enables faster charging speeds by allowing simultaneous charging of multiple battery cells, effectively reducing the overall charging time.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is rumored to be one of the first smartphones to feature stacked battery charging. The phone is expected to have a 5,000mAh battery, which is significantly larger than the battery in the current Galaxy S23. However, what’s more interesting than the capacity is that the stacked battery charging technology is expected to keep the phone’s physical size the same.

In addition to the Galaxy S24, other smartphones that are rumored to feature stacked battery charging include the iPhone 15.

How is Stacked Battery tech different than the current Winding Battery technology?

Winding battery technology is the conventional method of manufacturing battery cells. In this process, the positive and negative electrodes are rolled together in a spiral shape. While this approach is simple and cost-effective, it does have limitations. One such limitation is the potential for uneven internal stress in the battery cell, which may result in early failure

Stacked battery technology is a modern approach to making battery cells. The positive and negative electrodes are stacked on top of each other, layer by layer. This creates a more uniform internal structure, enhancing performance and lifespan. Stacked battery technology is also space-efficient, allowing for higher energy density in battery cells compared to winding battery technology.

Here are some of the potential benefits of stacked battery charging:

  • Longer battery life: Stacked battery charging can increase smartphone battery capacity by up to 50%. This means users can go longer between charges, without sacrificing device size.
  • Faster charging speeds: Stacked battery charging leads to faster charging. Multiple battery cells can be charged simultaneously, reducing overall charging time.
  • Smaller form factor: Stacked battery charging allows for smaller smartphones without sacrificing battery life. Multiple battery cells can be stacked close together, saving space.

Potential challenges of stacked battery charging:

  • Cost: Stacked battery charging is more expensive than traditional battery technology. Precisely stacking and aligning multiple battery cells increases manufacturing costs.
  • Safety: Improperly managed stacked battery charging can pose a safety risk. Batteries can overheat and catch fire if not properly cooled.
  • Reliability: Stacked battery charging is a relatively new technology, and its long-term performance is still uncertain due to limited data from smartphone usage.

Samsung reportedly plans to use Stacked Battery tech in Galaxy S24 series

Samsung plans to incorporate stacked batteries in the upcoming Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra, as per tipster RGcloudS. The tipster also mentions that Apple’s iPhone 15 series will adopt stacked batteries. However, due to limited production, this feature might be exclusive to the Galaxy S24 Ultra or available in both models.

iPhone 15

Official confirmation regarding the charging capabilities is still pending, although the Galaxy S24 is expected to continue with 25W fast charging. Additionally, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumored to incorporate cooling gel within the stacked batteries to minimize heat dissipation. Samsung is reportedly conducting tests to determine which models will benefit from this battery technology.

Overall, stacked battery charging is a promising new battery technology that has the potential to revolutionise the way that smartphones are powered. It allows for a higher battery capacity in a smaller space, which can lead to longer battery life and faster charging speeds. However, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed, such as battery cell technology and heat management.

Screen Manufacturing Issues: The Culprit Behind Lower iPhone 15 Stock

The primary issue revolves around the production of display panels for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, both featuring ultra-thin bezels achieved through a novel manufacturing process. Apple’s supplier, Foxconn, identified problems with the LG-manufactured displays during the risk ramp stage of production, where the screens failed the reliability test after undergoing the new Low Injection Pressure Overmolding (LIPO) process. This has caused delays, particularly affecting the iPhone 15 Pro Max, leading to potential shortages.

Despite these challenges, the iPhone 15 series promises exciting new technologies. One notable advancement is the implementation of stacked battery technology, offering better battery life and faster charging speeds for users. Additionally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max may come with a periscope lens, and all Pro models will feature the advanced 3nm A17 Bionic chipset. Non-Pro models will also include the Dynamic Island, and the entire series is expected to adopt USB-C this year.

Apple recently released its financial report for the second quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, showing a slight year-on-year decrease in revenue of about 2.5%. The company’s net income during the same period experienced a decrease of about 3.4%. In the Greater China region, revenue also declined slightly from the previous year. Despite the production challenges and the challenging macroeconomic environment, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to making long-term investments.

As the iPhone 15 series introduces compelling features and potential scarcity due to lower initial stock levels, consumer anticipation is expected to rise, leading to higher demand for the new iPhones upon their launch.

The Twitter Bird Is No More: Elon Musk Unveils New Logo

Elon Musk’s relentless changes to Twitter are driving users away. The platform, led by the eccentric billionaire, is often in the news for its “innovations,” which is also often meet with backlash. The latest example was the tweet view limit. This feature, which drove many people crazy, eventually settled, but it led to a loss of trust and a search for alternatives. However, Musk is not done yet. He is determined to drive away even the remaining users, and he has now changed the Twitter logo. Here are the details…

Will Elon Musk’s Twitter Changes Drive Users Away?

Elon Musk is undoubtedly one of the most successful business people in history. Currently the richest person in the world, Musk owes his wealth to innovative ideas that were ahead of their time, such as SpaceX and Tesla. However, this does not mean that every idea he has is good.

Even so, if you are managing a billion-dollar social media platform and you are not accountable to anyone, there is nothing to prevent these ideas from being implemented, even if they are very bad. In this regard, Musk recently announced his decision to rebrand Twitter as X and get rid of the famous bird logo. Now, this announcement has become a reality.

As you can see, the iconic Twitter bird in the top left corner has been replaced with an “X” shaped logo. While there has not been a change in the mobile app yet, we will soon see the X instead of the bird logo there as well. Unfortunately, as expected, the new logo did not appeal to users. Many people saw it as a deletion of Twitter culture rather than a rebranding. It is a matter of wonder whether Musk will give up on the decision to change the Twitter logo after the reactions.

YouTuber gets GTA 5 running on an overclocked Nintendo Switch

The original Nintendo Switch is now more than 6 years old and its successor is currently nowhere to be seen. But it seems the aging gaming handheld still has some neat tricks up its sleeve. In a rather interesting turn of events, YouTuber Geekerwan has managed to overclock the Nintendo Switch to run some popular titles, including Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5), Titanfall 2, and even God of War.

YouTuber breathes fresh air into the aging Nintendo Switch

Geekerwan modified his Nintendo Switch by sideloading Android 11 and overclocking the CPU to 2.3 GHz. The Switch originally had NVIDIA’s Tegra X1 processor with 4 ARM Cortex-A57 CPU cores and 4 ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores running only at 1.0 GHz. He also ramped up the memory subsystem from 1600 MHz to 2500 MHz.

The YouTuber couldn’t run PC games on the handheld with Android, so he installed Ubuntu operating system. This allowed him to access Steam and run some modern games, like Titanfall 2 and God of War, but the frame rate was very low. Depending on the game, you could expect 5-30 frames per second, which is not playable.

Geekerwan was able to get crisp graphics on the handheld, but gaming was a constant struggle. There were sound bugs and lag, and things got even worse when he tried to play Grand Theft Auto 5. He set it up to run at 720p on low settings, but the frame rate barely made it past 10fps. Considering the outdated hardware of the Nintendo Switch, it’s still impressive that it was able to load these demanding games at all.

With so many new handheld gaming devices on the market, the Nintendo Switch is no longer the ideal choice for gamers. In fact, the latest Asus ROG Ally and the Steam Deck offer a much better experience. However, Nintendo is also rumored to be releasing the Switch 2 in just two months from now.
