Apple Becomes the World’s First $3 Trillion Company

In a groundbreaking achievement, Apple has become the first publicly traded company to close a trading day with a remarkable $3 trillion market value. Boosted by a 2.31% increase in its shares on Friday, the tech giant has witnessed an exceptional surge, with its stock skyrocketing by nearly 46% this year. This remarkable milestone is even more significant considering that Apple’s market cap had temporarily surpassed $3 trillion in January 2022 but failed to close at that level.

Apple

Stronger Than Expected: Apple’s Resilient Performance, Reinforcing Investor Confidence

The driving force behind Apple’s remarkable stock market success in 2023 has been its flagship product, the iPhone. Since its introduction by the late Steve Jobs in 2007, the iPhone has played a pivotal role in Apple’s incredible journey. With cumulative sales exceeding 2 billion units, the iPhone continues to be a major contributor to the company’s annual revenue, accounting for almost half of it.

Apple’s dominance in the smartphone market is evident both in the United States and China. In the US, all top five best-selling smartphones belong to the iPhone, commanding over 50% of the market share. Similarly, in the Chinese market, the iPhone holds a significant advantage, occupying four out of the top five spots.

Despite recent market challenges, Apple has maintained its resilience. In the second quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, iPhone revenue reached an impressive $51.334 billion, surpassing the same period’s performance from the previous year and setting a new record for a single quarter.

While the tech industry’s focus has gravitated towards artificial intelligence (AI), Apple has pursued its own path, with limited emphasis on the emerging technology. This sets Apple apart from its competitors, such as Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, and Meta, which have embraced AI wholeheartedly. Notably, four other US companies, including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia, currently boast valuations exceeding $1 trillion.

Apple’s success can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the recent launch of the highly anticipated Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality (AR) headset set to go on sale next year for $3,499. With this release, Apple aims to revolutionize the AR industry.

The company’s stronger-than-expected quarterly earnings in May further solidified its reputation among investors. Despite a slight decline in sales and profit, Apple’s performance demonstrated resilience and reaffirmed its position as a tech industry leader.

As Apple continues to innovate and capture market share, it is poised to maintain its impressive trajectory, shaping the future of technology with its groundbreaking products and unwavering customer loyalty.

Xiaomi 14 series tipped to retain 1-inch sensor, 1.33-inch camera still in R&D phase

Leading smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is reportedly set to maintain the 1-inch primary camera sensor in its next-generation flagship devices. In contrast, the much-anticipated 1.33-inch sensor (not to be confused with 1/1.33 inches) is currently still in the research and development stage.

Xiaomi-13-Ultra

The Future is 1.33-Inch, but Not Just Yet

According to Digital Chat Station, Nubia’s 35mm primary camera (Check out our full review on Nubia Z50 Ultra) with its innovative algorithm outperforms certain characteristics of the 1-inch sensor. This intriguing development suggests that Nubia’s forthcoming flagship smartphone could potentially be a standout contender in the market.

Xiaomi next flagship 1-33 inch

First introduced in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra in late 2022, the Sony IMX989 1-inch sensor marked a significant shift in smartphone technology. Throughout 2023, the 1-inch sensor has been adopted more extensively, with a range of models from Xiaomi, including the Xiaomi 13 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Ultra, as well as devices from other manufacturers like the OPPO Find X6 Pro and vivo X90 Pro+. In fact, Xiaomi currently leads the pack with the highest number of models featuring a 1-inch main camera sensor. Beyond Xiaomi, both Sony and Sharp have also integrated 1-inch sensors into their devices.

As for Xiaomi’s release plans, it appears that the company will deviate from its previous pattern of launching new “S” suffix variants in the latter half of the year. Speculations indicate that Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship could be the Xiaomi 14 series, which is rumored to include three models: the Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 14 Pro, and Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Each of these devices is expected to be unveiled at individual events.

WhatsApp is working on high-quality video sharing feature

WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform, is set to release an exciting new update for its Android users. The upcoming version 2.23.14.10, currently available to beta testers through the Google Play Beta Program, brings with it a highly anticipated feature: the ability to send high-quality videos.

Illustration: Soumyakanti Ray

Light Compression Applied to High-Quality Videos on WhatsApp

Building upon the recently introduced option for high-quality photos, WhatsApp is now extending this enhancement to videos. With the new update, users will find a convenient button within the drawing editor that allows them to share videos in improved quality. While the dimensions of the videos will be preserved, a light compression will be applied, resulting in better overall quality.

It’s worth noting that the high-quality option for videos is not the default setting; users will need to manually select it each time they wish to share a video in enhanced quality. This ensures that users have control over their video-sharing preferences. To identify high-quality videos, WhatsApp automatically adds a tag to the message bubble, similar to the existing feature for high-quality photos. This makes it easier for recipients to recognize when a video has been sent in improved quality.

whatsapp high-quality video

While the high-quality video-sharing feature is currently limited to selected beta testers, it will gradually roll out to more users in the coming weeks. Users can check if the feature is available to them by selecting a larger-sized video, as the high-quality option may not be visible for smaller files.

It’s important to note that this feature is currently not available for sharing videos through status updates. However, WhatsApp beta for iOS users can also look forward to the support for high-quality videos, with further announcements to follow once the rollout expands.

Microsoft Breaks Silence on Xbox Sales, Announces Impressive Figures at Brazil Game Exhibition

In a surprising move, Microsoft has finally unveiled the sales data for its highly popular Xbox series of game consoles. For over a decade, the tech giant has kept silent regarding the exact figures, leaving fans and analysts guessing. However, during the recent 2023 Best International Games Festival held in Brazil, Microsoft took the opportunity to disclose the long-awaited numbers.

Microsoft’s numbers are quite close to analysts’ estimates

As of June 2023, the total sales of the Xbox Series S|X have reached an impressive 21 million units. This comes as no surprise, as earlier this year, a third-party agency estimated the sales volume to be around 22 million. The official figures released by Microsoft align closely with these estimates, showcasing the accuracy of the predictions made by industry experts.

Microsoft

Additionally, the combined sales of the Xbox One series, encompassing the first generation, One S, and One X, have surpassed an astounding 58 million units. This demonstrates the enduring popularity of the previous generation Xbox consoles among gamers worldwide.

In comparison, Sony’s PlayStation 5, a direct competitor to the Xbox series, had reportedly sold approximately 38.5 million units as of May 2023. This figure falls in line with Microsoft’s statement from last year, where they indicated that Xbox console sales were roughly half of Sony’s PlayStation. It is clear that the gaming market remains highly competitive, with both companies vying for the attention and loyalty of gamers around the globe. With the unveiling of these impressive sales figures, Microsoft has once again cemented its position as a strong player in the gaming industry.

TSMC Confirms Cybersecurity Incident and Data Breach, LockBit Demands $70 Million Ransom

In a recent announcement, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) confirmed that it has fallen victim to a cyber attack, resulting in a data breach. The company acknowledged that some data had been leaked but assured the public that customer information remains secure. TSMC’s business operations have not been affected by the incident.

The Hackers are threatening to release login data to the public

According to a TSMC spokesperson, the cybersecurity breach was primarily related to the initial server setup and configuration. The company promptly responded to the incident by terminating data exchange with the supplier involved, adhering to its robust security protocols and standard operating procedures.

TSMC

The group claiming responsibility for the security incident is LockBit, a notorious blackmailing organization. LockBit has published the stolen data on its website and is demanding a staggering ransom of $70 million. Should TSMC refuse to comply, LockBit threatens to release passwords and login information associated with the stolen data.

TSMC has made it clear that the compromised data originated from Kinmax Technology, a service provider offering IT solutions such as networking, cloud computing, storage, and database management to TSMC. While TSMC remains committed to resolving the situation, it is also collaborating with relevant authorities and cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident further.

As one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, TSMC’s security breach raises concerns within the tech industry. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threats faced by organizations, highlighting the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

TSMC’s prompt response in terminating data exchange with the supplier demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding its operations and protecting customer information. The company’s dedication to adhering to established security protocols will undoubtedly be instrumental in resolving this breach and preventing similar incidents in the future.

Spotify Considers Adding Music Videos to its Streaming Service

In an effort to expand its feature portfolio and compete with rivals, Spotify is reportedly considering the addition of full-length music videos to its platform. While the streaming service has declined to comment, sources from Bloomberg reveal that Spotify is in talks with potential partners to make this feature a reality. Although it remains uncertain who would support this new offering and when it might be available, this move could significantly enhance the user experience on the popular music streaming platform.

Spotify Canvas is similar, but the new feature will include full music videos

Currently, Spotify’s video content is limited to podcasts, short storytelling clips, and looping GIFs that accompany songs. While the company introduced a TikTok-like home feed earlier this year, it primarily focuses on music and podcast discovery rather than video viewing. Previous attempts by Spotify to incorporate TV content from networks like Comedy Central and ESPN were not successful.

Spotify

The idea of incorporating music videos into streaming music services is not new, as Apple Music has been offering this feature for years. However, Spotify’s inclusion of music videos would help it rival Apple’s offerings and potentially attract users who would otherwise watch videos on YouTube. Furthermore, it would provide additional content for the new feed and entice music enthusiasts from popular social networks such as Instagram and TikTok.

Although music videos themselves do not generate significant direct revenue, they serve as a supplement to audio income and increase exposure for musicians. Platforms like YouTube offer creators a share of ad revenue, with an average of $18 per 1,000 views, which is then divided among artists, labels, and other stakeholders. The inclusion of music videos on Spotify could serve as an additional revenue stream for the company, especially considering the recent staff layoffs it underwent to mitigate economic challenges and business missteps.

By adding music videos to its platform, Spotify aims to diversify its content and potentially boost its financial outlook. Unlike podcasts, which require a large production team, music videos could improve the company’s finances without significant resource investments.

Twitter implements login requirement to view tweets

In a recent development, Twitter has implemented a new feature requiring users to log in to their accounts in order to view tweets. Previously, anyone could freely access tweets without the need for an account. The change has raised questions among Twitter users and tech enthusiasts, as the company has not officially commented on this update.

Deliberate Strategy or Temporary Glitch? Unraveling Twitter’s Motives

While some speculate that this may be a temporary glitch, others believe it could be a deliberate move to encourage more individuals to create accounts on the platform. Twitter has been striving to expand its user base, and this requirement might be seen as a strategy to convert passive observers into active participants.

However, this alteration could potentially have unintended consequences for Twitter. If tweets are no longer publicly accessible, it may impact the site’s visibility on search engines, potentially leading to a decrease in organic traffic from platforms like Google. Additionally, this change has been met with some annoyance from users who preferred the previous ease of access.

It’s worth noting that the recent involvement of Elon Musk, although no longer CEO, in Twitter’s operations could be a contributing factor to this change. Musk has previously expressed concerns about AI tools searching Twitter and has been critical of companies utilizing Twitter data without permission.

As Twitter’s new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, assumes her role, the platform continues to experience technical errors. Recently, a significant number of users received suspension notifications for alleged spam activity, yet the cause behind this incident remains unclear, as Twitter has not provided any official response. With Musk’s influence in the C-suite, the possibility of policy changes occurring rapidly cannot be discounted.

The introduction of the login requirement to view tweets on Twitter has generated significant user concern and raised questions about the platform’s direction under new leadership. As users await further clarification from the company, it remains to be seen how this change will impact Twitter’s user engagement and growth in the coming months.

WhatsApp launches secure local chat transfer via QR code

WhatsApp has unveiled a new and efficient way to transfer chat history from an old phone to a new one using a QR code-based system. The company’s latest feature allows users to migrate their WhatsApp data seamlessly when switching to a new device operating on the same system, be it iOS or Android.

WhatsApp Chat Transfer

WhatsApp’s QR Code Data Migration: Simplifying Phone Switches

To initiate the transfer, both devices should be powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. On the old phone, users need to navigate to WhatsApp’s Settings, then select Chats and Chat Transfer. This will generate a unique QR code, which can be scanned from the new phone to complete the transfer process.

Compared to existing third-party solutions, WhatsApp’s local data transfer method provides enhanced security measures. The encrypted data is exclusively shared between the two devices over the local network, ensuring a safe and private migration experience.

Previously, WhatsApp relied on cloud backups to facilitate data transfer between devices running the same operating system. This new local transfer method marks the company’s first step in offering a streamlined solution for such migrations.

WhatsApp already supports the migration between iOS and Android devices; however, the existing methods are slightly more complex compared to the simplicity of the new QR code scanning process.

In addition to the data transfer feature, WhatsApp offers a multi-device functionality, enabling users to sync messages across various devices using a single phone number. The company recently expanded this feature to support multiple phones, providing even greater convenience and flexibility for its users.

Google plans to block Canadian news on its platform over new law on paying publishers

Google has announced that it will block Canadian news on its platform to avoid paying news publishers according to a new Canadian law. The search engine giant is joining Facebook in expanding a campaign against the law requiring payment to local news publishers.

Google

Google will remove links to Canadian news from search results and other products in Canada at the commencement of the implementation of the law. The new law is scheduled to kick in by January 2024 and Facebook has made a similar announcement.

The new law is Bill C-18 which is termed the Online News Act. The law is aimed at protecting local news originators who have suffered losses in the years when Facebook and Google accounted for a greater share of the online advertising market. It is estimated that news businesses in Canada could receive up to $250 million per year under the new legislation.

The implementation of the new legislation still offers some thorny areas. Google and Facebook have no obligations immediately under the act. The Canadian government says it is open to consultation with the two media giants on regulatory and implementation challenges. However, Google and Facebook maintain that the proposals were harmful to their businesses, leading to their planned exclusion of Canadian news content from their platforms. The Canadian government however insists on the full implementation of the law. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the companies of using bullying tactics to get the law overturned.

The law stipulates online platforms to negotiate with news publishers and pay for their content. A similar law passed in Australia in 2021 prompted a similar response from Google and Facebook. It is possible that a compromise could be reached between the government and the companies, as was the case in Australia.
