OnePlus Nord 3 to get flagship-grade Sony IMX890 primary camera with OIS support

It is now confirmed that OnePlus will be launching the new OnePlus Nord 3 on July 5 across the globe. Said to be a rebrand of the OnePlus Ace 2V from China, the device will feature a similar design and mostly similar specs. However, there is one major upgrade coming for the global market in the camera department.

OnePlus

Tipster Ishan Agarwal has leaked promo material of the OnePlus Nord 3, revealing that it will feature a 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor for the primary camera with OIS. For those unaware, this is a flagship-level camera sensor that the brand has already used in devices like the OnePlus 11 and the OnePlus 11R. The promo material also reveals that the device will have up to 16GB RAM and will also support the RAM-Vita (virtual RAM) feature.

While the 11 and 11R smartphones are equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Plus Gen 1 chipsets, respectively, the Nord 3 will showcase the Dimensity 9000 chipset developed by MediaTek. Rumors suggest that the OnePlus Nord 3 will come equipped with a sizable 6.74-inch display. This display is said to offer a 1.5K resolution and a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Powering the device, we can expect a robust Dimensity 9000 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

OnePlus

Moving on to the battery, the Nord 3 is rumored to house a generous 5,000mAh battery, supporting fast charging capabilities at an impressive 80W. In terms of the camera setup, leaks suggest a triple rear camera system, which will likely consist of a 50MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2MP macro unit. Selfie enthusiasts can anticipate a 16MP front-facing camera.

Other features of the device could include dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, a 4129.8mm(sq) VC cooling chamber, an Alert Slider, NFC functionality, an X-Axis Linear motor, and an IR blaster. Lastly, the software onboard is expected to be OxygenOS 13.1 based on Android 13.

New Vulnerability Discovered in Microsoft Teams Puts Users at Risk

In a recent report by Max Corbridge and Tom Ellson of JUMPSEC, a renowned security analysis company, a critical vulnerability has been uncovered in the latest version of Microsoft Teams. This vulnerability poses a serious threat as it allows hackers to bypass client security controls, infiltrate other teams, and spread malicious programs containing Trojan horse viruses.

Microsoft Teams is key in a lot of organizations’ communication structure, which adds to the risk

Microsoft Teams, a popular collaboration platform, enables users with a Microsoft account to establish a “business or organization.” This feature allows users from one organization to communicate with those from another. However, JUMPSEC’s team identified a flaw in the system’s logic, exploiting which they were able to circumvent security controls in a mere 10 minutes, subsequently sending a harmful program to users in other organizations.

Microsoft Teams

While Microsoft has acknowledged this vulnerability, it has yet to inform its users regarding the process of fixing it. In the meantime, JUMPSEC recommends that Microsoft Teams users take immediate action to protect themselves. Users can disable specific options in the settings to prevent hackers from exploiting this vulnerability and sending malicious programs to their teams.

The severity of this vulnerability cannot be overstated. With the potential for unauthorized access to sensitive data, the risk to organizations and their users is significant. A lot of big (and small) organizations use Microsoft Teams for a major part of their operations, which could be a gold mine for hackers. Microsoft’s delay in addressing this issue is a cause for concern, as it leaves countless users vulnerable to cyberattacks.

In light of this development, it is crucial for Microsoft Teams users to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their accounts and data. Regularly checking for software updates and following recommended security practices can help mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability. It is expected that Microsoft will prioritize the resolution of this vulnerability, given the potential impact it could have on users and organizations alike. In the meanwhile, users should remain cautious and take proactive measures to protect themselves from potential cyber threats.

Microsoft’s Latest Small Language Model Outperforms ChatGPT with a Fraction of Parameters

In a surprising breakthrough, Microsoft has unveiled its latest language model, Phi-1, with 1.3 billion parameters. Contrary to the conventional belief that larger models perform better, Microsoft’s approach focuses on the quality of the training data. Phi-1, trained on a meticulously curated “textbook-level” dataset, has outperformed GPT-3.5 with 100 billion parameters.

The training time for Microsoft’s model was merely 4 days

Microsoft’s Phi-1 language model, built on the Transformer architecture, has garnered attention for its impressive performance. The team behind Phi-1 placed emphasis on the quality of training data, a departure from the prevailing trend of increasing model stack size. Using a high-quality dataset consisting of “textbook-level” content sourced from the internet, the Microsoft team processed the information using GPT-3.5. With the assistance of 8 Nvidia A100 GPUs, the training process was completed in just four days.

Microsoft

According to Microsoft, the focus on enhancing training data quality, rather than escalating parameter count, has yielded promising results. In comparative tests, Phi-1 achieved an accuracy score of 50.6%, surpassing GPT-3.5’s performance of 47% with a staggering 175 billion parameters.

Microsoft plans to open source Phi-1 on HuggingFace, further strengthening the accessibility and collaborative potential of this language model. This isn’t the first instance of Microsoft developing a smaller language model; previously, they introduced Orca, a 13 billion parameter model trained on synthetic data using GPT-4. Even Orca has proven to outperform ChatGPT. The research paper on Phi-1 has been published on arXiv, providing detailed insights into its architecture and training methodology. For those interested in exploring the technical aspects, the paper offers a comprehensive overview of Phi-1’s development.

Microsoft’s Phi-1 language model challenges the notion that increased stack size is essential for improved performance. By focusing on high-quality training data, Phi-1 has showcased remarkable accuracy, surpassing even larger models. The open sourcing of Phi-1 further demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to advancing the field of natural language processing.

The US Congress Implements New Rules for ChatGPT Usage in Offices

In response to the rapid growth of generative AI and its far-reaching implications, the House of Representatives has introduced new regulations surrounding the use of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by congressional offices. This move highlights Washington’s ongoing efforts to grapple with the challenges posed by this transformative technology both at a legislative and personal level.

Offices can only use ChatGPT Plus for privacy reasons

According to a memo obtained by Axios, Catherine L. Szpindor, the Chief Administrative Officer of the House, outlined the guidelines for ChatGPT usage. Offices are now only authorized to utilize the paid version, ChatGPT Plus, which offers enhanced privacy features essential for safeguarding House data. Additionally, the memo specifies that no other large language models are permitted for use.

US Congress

The regulations further emphasize that ChatGPT is to be employed solely for research and evaluation purposes, prohibiting its incorporation into regular workflow. Offices are instructed to input non-sensitive data, refraining from sharing unpublished text blocks with the chatbot. Privacy settings, initially disabled, should be activated to ensure interaction history is not stored or used to augment the large language model.

This development aligns with broader efforts in Congress to address the implications of AI. A bipartisan group of senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, is actively working on comprehensive legislation. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley have conducted hearings on the subject, with Hawley proposing a framework for corporate accountability. In parallel, individual lawmakers have introduced standalone bills, aiming to contribute to the final regulatory package.

As Axios tech and policy reporter Ashley Gold explains, Congress is not unique in its struggle to integrate generative AI into existing workflows while confronting fundamental questions about the technology itself.

By establishing these new guidelines, Congress aims to strike a balance between leveraging AI’s potential for improving operations and ensuring privacy and data protection. As the conversation around AI regulation evolves, it is crucial to find common ground between innovation and accountability, fostering a responsible and ethically-driven AI landscape.
