Realme Pad 2 surfaces on FCC with a massive 8360mAh battery & 33W fast charging

Earlier this week, we reported on a new tablet from Realme that had surfaced on the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). The tablet in question is the company’s Pad 2 model, which has now been certified by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) as well. This certification revealed some of its notable specifications, so let’s have a look.

Realme

Realme Pad 2 FCC sighting hints at an imminent launch

Looking at the FCC listing, we can see the Realme Pad 2 carrying the RMP2205 model number, which is the same model that was spotted on the BIS listing as well. While the latest certification sighting doesn’t reveal finer details regarding this device, it does offer us a look at two key aspects related to its charging and battery. The Pad 2 will apparently be powered by a massive 8,360mAh battery pack.

Realme

This is quite the upgrade considering the original Realme Pad (Review) was powered by a smaller 7,100mAh battery unit. The improvements don’t just end there as the FCC sighting also reveals that the upcoming tablet model from the brand will arrive with support for 33W fast charging. This is again faster than the 18W fast charging offered by its predecessor.

Realme

Lastly, the certification sighting even offers us a glimpse of the new tablet’s design. It carries design sketches that showcase a circular camera module on the rear. Furthermore, the Pad 2 will arrive with rounded corners on all four sides. Unfortunately, this was all the information that was revealed on the certification database, so stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

A $30 Logitech Gamepad was used to steer Missing Tourist Submarine

In a shocking turn of events, an OceanGate Expeditions tourist submarine, named Titan, went missing with five individuals on board during an expedition to explore the historic wreck of the Titanic. As the search and rescue operations intensify, troubling details have emerged regarding the sub’s non-standard design and its utilization of a Logitech F710 wireless PC game controller from 2010 for steering.

Using a $30 controller for a deep-sea trip of around 3 miles raises questions

The crew of the missing vessel includes Hamish Harding, a British billionaire and adventure enthusiast, as well as Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate. The submarine vanished in the North Atlantic, approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod, shortly after commencing their dive. Contact with the Polar Prince research ship was lost about 1 hour and 45 minutes into the expedition.

Logitech

One concerning aspect is that the entire sub is sealed shut from the outside, making it impossible for the occupants to escape without external assistance. Even if the vessel resurfaces, the crew members could face suffocation within the capsule. This revelation has sent waves through social media, raising obvious concerns about the safety measures in place on the sub.

Furthermore, reports have surfaced about OceanGate’s history of evading or expressing discontent with safety regulations. A CBS Sunday Morning segment from November 2022 showcased the Titan, where Stockton Rush boasted about its minimalistic design and even showcased the Logitech F710 wireless controller as the primary interface for operating the submarine.

The Logitech F710 controller, a gaming device introduced in 2010 is being strongly criticized as an accessory for a deep sea trip that costs $250,000. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the Titan has encountered issues. During a previous expedition last summer, the submersible temporarily went astray, albeit while maintaining communication with the surface. The current situation, however, is far more dire, with all contact severed and rescue operations being the primary focus.

As the search continues, authorities have deployed various resources, including sonar buoys and aircraft equipped with underwater detection capabilities. Time is of the essence, as estimates suggest the crew may have limited oxygen reserves remaining. Once the submarine and its occupants are located, a thorough investigation will be initiated to determine the cause of this incident.

Ford CEO Dismisses Tesla’s Cybertruck as a Vehicle for “Silicon Valley People”

In a recent interview with CNBC, Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley made headlines by dismissing Tesla‘s highly anticipated electric pickup, the Cybertruck. Farley argued that the Cybertruck was designed solely for “Silicon Valley people” rather than individuals who engage in practical activities. He confidently stated that Tesla’s pickup could not compete with Ford’s electric F-150 Lightning, which has already gained traction in the market.

The Tesla Cybertruck is priced $10,000 lower than the F-150 Lightning 2023

While the Cybertruck has faced multiple delays, Ford has been actively producing and delivering electric F-150 pickups. With over 13,000 electric F-150 pickups delivered last year, Ford is determined to meet the demands of approximately 200,000 pre-orders. Although Tesla dominates the overall electric vehicle market in the United States, the electric pickup truck segment remains an area where Ford trumps over Tesla.

Farley expressed his perspective during the interview, suggesting that Americans tend to favor market leaders. He emphasized Ford’s position as the market leader in electric pickups and vans, asserting their deep understanding of their customer base. In response to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s vision for the Cybertruck, Farley stated, “If he wants to design a Cybertruck for the people of Silicon Valley, so let him do it.” Farley further talked about Ford’s approach, highlighting that their vehicles are tailored to more practical individuals.

While the official price of the Cybertruck is yet to be announced by Tesla, industry estimates suggest a starting price of around $50,000, which is approximately $10,000 lower than the F-150 Lightning launched by Ford in 2023. Despite repeated delays in the Cybertruck’s delivery timeline, Elon Musk has reiterated Tesla’s commitment to delivering the vehicle by the end of this year.

Interestingly, Ford recently announced plans to adopt Tesla’s charging standard and leverage the Supercharger network. Farley expressed enthusiasm about this partnership, talking about its benefits for users. This collaboration not only highlights the potential for cooperation between rival automakers but also reflects the industry’s commitment to enhancing the charging infrastructure as a whole, only to provide a boost to the popularity of electric vehicles.

Opera launches new Opera One web browser with built-in AI-powered Aria chatbot

Opera has announced a new version of its web browser called Opera One. A major addition to the software is an AI-powered chatbot called Aria.

Similar to the Bing chatbot in Microsoft Edge, the Aria chatbot also resides within the sidebar of the browser and can answer questions using real-time information, give suggestions, and more.

Opera One

Apart from the AI-powered chatbot Aria, the browser also comes with a redesigned look and feel and some new features which aim to make the browsing experience intuitive and productive.

It comes with a feature called Tab Islands, a new way of organizing tabs into groups that are related to each other. Users can create different Tab Islands for work, personal, etc., and can quickly switch between them.

The Aria chatbot, which can search the web, generate text, and write code, is powered by OpenAI’s GPT technology — the same technology that is powering Bing from Microsoft. To use the tool, users need to sign up for an Opera account if they don’t already have it.

Built on the company’s new Modular Design framework that is touted to offer more flexibility and customization, the web browser also comes with a built-in VPN, a battery saver mode, and more.

The company started testing this new Opera One web browser last month but now it is available for everyone. It is now available to download for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

AST SpaceMobile Succeeds in getting 4G Download Speeds from Space

In a remarkable technological feat, AST SpaceMobile, the pioneer in space-based cellular broadband networks, has accomplished repeated successful download speeds surpassing 10 Mbps during the testing phase of BlueWalker 3. This groundbreaking milestone marks the first-ever instance of space-based cellular 4G communications using smartphones.

Space-Based communication will help provide connectivity to dead network zones over the globe

The tests, conducted by engineers in Hawaii during June, utilized off-the-shelf smartphones and leveraged AT&T spectrum and Nokia RAN technology. Initial speeds reached an impressive 10.3 Mbps, while subsequent voice call testing with AT&T employees showcased the versatility of the system. As newer iterations of BlueWalker 3 continue to be created, the next major milestone will be 5G cellular broadband. It won’t take too long, that’s for sure.

AST SpaceMobile

Abel Avellan, Chairman and CEO of AST SpaceMobile, emphasized the transformative potential of this achievement, stating, “AST SpaceMobile’s space-based cellular capabilities are designed to be a critical extension for cellular communications. This groundbreaking moment in telecommunications history brings us closer to our goal of providing broadband services to regions lacking reliable or non-existent cellular coverage.”

The successful achievement of double-digit download speeds during satellite-to-smartphone testing represents a significant step towards universal connectivity. Chris Sambar, Head of AT&T Network, also expressed the importance of this milestone in ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for people across the United States, irrespective of their location.

The impact of this development is not limited to the United States. Alberto Ripepi, Chief Network Officer at Vodafone, explained how achieving such mobile speeds through satellite communication directly to standard 4G smartphones brings people closer together by making networks more accessible. Vodafone, Vodacom, and AST SpaceMobile are committed to bringing this capability to hard-to-reach areas in Africa and Europe.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, stressed the importance of delivery of real mobile broadband connectivity directly to smartphones. This should be treated as a critical achievement that will foster global connectivity in the long run. AST SpaceMobile’s technology also aims to expand coverage for wireless companies, bridging gaps and dead zones in their networks. This breakthrough has the potential to extend cellular broadband services to millions worldwide, currently lacking reliable cellular connectivity. The number is bigger than you might think.

With agreements with over 35 mobile network operators worldwide, AST SpaceMobile’s impact will become clearer over the long run. Major players in the telecommunications game, such as Vodafone Group, AT&T, and Bell Canada have previously expressed support in favor of AST SpaceMobile’s technology. As the company prepares its technology for commercialization, the successful deployment of BlueWalker 3, combined with the largest-ever commercial communications array in low-Earth orbit, will set the stage for the birth of a truly global cellular broadband network. With the advancements in telecommunications rapidly advancing, it won’t be surprising if the near future normalizes global satellite-based communications on mobile devices.

AST SpaceMobile’s mission is to eliminate connectivity gaps faced by the five billion mobile subscribers worldwide and bring broadband services to the millions who remain unconnected. With their groundbreaking achievements and partnerships, it seems like they are one step closer to fulfilling their vision.

Apple’s Self-Repair Program Goes Next-Level: Now You Can Fix Your iPhone 14 Yourself

Apple products are known for their great user experience, but they can also be expensive. If something goes wrong with your Apple product, it can be costly to repair, especially if the damage is due to user error. To help address this issue, Apple has expanded its self-repair program to cover the iPhone 14 and newer MacBooks. Here are the details…

Apple Expands Self-Repair Program to Cover iPhone 14 and Newer MacBooks

The “Apple self-repair” is a program that allows users to purchase genuine Apple parts and tools to repair their own devices. The program is currently available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, as well as select MacBook models. Now, the company has expanded its self-repairprogram to cover its more recent devices, including the iPhone 14 range and the M2-based versions of the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The self repair program also has been updated so that you no longer need to call Apple to finish your repairs. You can now use the System Configuration tool to verify and authenticate your repairs yourself. To do this, simply put your device into Diagnostics mode and follow the instructions. This makes it much easier to complete repairs yourself, without having to rely on Apple’s technicians.

Of course, self-repair isn’t for everyone. It can be time-consuming and difficult, and it’s not always clear what parts you need or how to fix a particular problem. However, for people who are comfortable with DIY repairs, the Self Service Repair program can be a great way to save money and get your device back up and running quickly.

You can check if your device is eligible by visiting the Apple Self Service Repair website. As Right to Repair laws and regulations become more common, we can expect to see even more companies offer self-repair options.

Instagram Users in the US can Now Download and Share Reels

Instagram, one of the biggest social media platforms in the world has unveiled a feature that is sure to please its user base. After years of requests, Instagram has finally answered the call by allowing users to download and share Reels posted by others outside of the app. This move is a clear response to TikTok doing the same (and successfully so since the TikTok watermark provides further marketing of the platform when content is shared across platforms).

Similar to downloaded videos from TikTok, Instagram Reels will also bear an icon or watermark

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, took to his Instagram broadcast channel on Tuesday to make the announcement. He revealed that users in the United States would now have the ability to download Reels directly to their camera roll with a simple tap on the share icon and selection of the Download option. This new feature grants users greater control over the content they create and enjoy on Instagram. It does raise a question, if companies can let users download videos onto their devices that easily, should that option be present across all platforms?

Instagram

It’s important to note that the ability to download Reels is limited to content posted by public accounts. Furthermore, public accounts hold the power to disable the download option for their Reels if they prefer to maintain tighter control over their content distribution. While it remains unclear whether downloaded Reels will bear a watermark, Mosseri’s accompanying image hints at the inclusion of an Instagram logo alongside the account name. This follows a similar approach taken by TikTok in attaching a watermark to downloaded videos. It’s worth noting that Instagram has previously allowed users to download their own Reels from drafts without any watermark, so this would be a new change.

The introduction of Reels has already proved impactful for Instagram, as Mark Zuckerberg revealed during the Q1 2023 earnings call that time spent on the platform increased by an impressive 24%. It follows a similar format to that of TikTok, the viral video platform. Instagram’s decision to enable Reels downloads undoubtedly marks a significant milestone in the platform’s evolution.
