Nintendo Switch consoles sales expected to drop to 15 million units this year

Earlier today (9th May 2023), Nintendo revealed that its forecast for the sales of the Switch handheld console sales isn’t look too great this year either. The company is expected a drop in overall Switch sales by the financial year ending at March 2024. So here are all the details.

Nintendo Switch sales expected to drop for the 3rd year in row

According to the Japanese video game company, the sales of the Switch console is believed to drop to just 15 million units this year. This would mark a 17 percent annual drop and even a third consecutive year of decline in sales. The original Switch had launched around seven years ago and has seen great success in the global markets. However, despite supply chain issues having eased recently, the sales of the console is still dropping.

Nintendo

As per Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, “It’s difficult for Switch hardware and software sales to maintain the same pace”. For those unaware, the company doesn’t just make hardware and the popular handheld consoles, but even develops games exclusively for its proprietary platform. These titles are some of the biggest series in the gaming industry and have even spun off successful movies as well like the recent ‘Super Mario’.

Notably, there have also been many rumors regarding Nintendo working on a sequel to the Switch and its refreshes. Although, Serkan Toto, Kantan Games consultancy founder stated that “Based on the guidance, it is crystal clear the launch of a ‘Switch 2’ or entirely new piece of hardware can be ruled out this fiscal year”. Meaning, the Switch 2 model is still a while away from being officially announced.

Sharp Aquos R8 series launched with 1-inch Leica camera, 2000 nits peak brightness, 1Hz-240Hz refresh rate, and more

Sharp continues to sell smartphones in its home country Japan. Every May, the brand unveils its annual flagship handsets. This year is no different as the company took wraps off the Sharp Aquos R8 series earlier today.

For the first time, the brand has launched a ‘Pro’ variant of its flagship smartphone. Thus, the new Sharp Aquos R8 Pro acts as a true successor of the Sharp Aquos R7. While the vanilla model is a toned-down version.

Just like previous iterations, the main highlights of the new premium phones from Sharp are their displays and cameras. For the unaware, Sharp is the only known OEM other than Xiaomi that uses Leica-tuned cameras on its handsets.

In fact, Sharp also sells self-branded Leica smartphones in Japan under the name of Leica Leitz Phone. These devices are rebranded versions of Aquos R series handsets. The Aquos R8 Pro may release as Leica Leitz Phone 3 later this year.

After DALL-E, OpenAI Launches Shap-E, a Text-Based 3D Model Generator

OpenAI has been pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the field of artificial intelligence, and their recent release of the Shap·E model is no exception. Following the success of their text-generation image model DALL·E, OpenAI has created another impressive model that allows users to enter text and generate realistic and diverse 3D models.

3D Assets can be printed with 3D Printers

Shap·E is not just a 3D model generator, but can also generate parameters of implicit functions, which can render textured meshes and neural radiation fields (NeRF). This means that Shap·E can create high-quality 3D assets with fine-grained textures and complex shapes, unlike current models that only output point clouds or voxels.

Shap E

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) is a new view field synthesis technique with implicit scene representation that has attracted extensive attention in the field of computer vision. It is a novel view synthesis and 3D reconstruction method that has a wide range of applications in robotics, city maps, autonomous navigation, virtual reality/augmented reality, and more. With Shap·E’s ability to generate parameters of implicit functions, it can render NeRF, allowing users to create complex 3D models with high-quality textures.

In contrast, point clouds are a series of points that fall in a three-dimensional coordinate system. They can be spread on the building surface or building facade to capture the shape of the building’s appearance. Voxels, on the other hand, are pixels in 3D space. Quantized, fixed-size point clouds. Each cell is of fixed size and discrete coordinates.

OpenAI has showcased the capabilities of Shap·E with examples such as a bowl of food, a penguin, a voxelized dog, a campfire, an avocado-shaped chair, and more. These models can be rendered in seconds, providing users with a fast and efficient way to create high-quality 3D assets.

Fomalhaut, A Star System Full of Surprises and Secrets Revealed by the JWST

Beyond our sky, about 25 light years away, lies the star system of Fomalhaut – a stellar wonderland full of surprises and secrets. For ages, astronomers have been captivated by Fomalhaut, and now, thanks to the remarkable James Webb Space Telescope, we’re developing a better understanding of it. In a recent study published in Nature Astronomy, a team of scientists primarily from the University of Arizona and NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory revealed that Fomalhaut is far more complex than we ever anticipated.

Scientists have known about the Belt since 1983

Surrounding the 440 million-year-old Fomalhaut is a debris field that scientists have known about since 1983. However, what they didn’t expect to discover were three separate debris belts surrounding the star. The innermost belt is comparable to our solar system’s asteroid belt but far more expansive, stretching from about seven astronomical units from the star to about 80 astronomical units out. To put those numbers in perspective, that’s about 10 times broader of an inner asteroid belt than what astronomers predicted.

Asteroid Belt

But the most intriguing discovery is the second debris belt, located outside of the inner asteroid belt. This debris belt is tilted at 23 degrees from everything else in orbit of the star, a truly unique aspect of the system. According to the lead author of the study, András Gáspár, the tilted belt could be the result of planets in orbit of Fomalhaut that astronomers have yet to discover.

George Rieke, one of the astronomers involved in the study, likens the Fomalhaut system to a mystery novel. “Where are the planets?” he asks. “I think it’s not a very big leap to say there’s probably a really interesting planetary system around the star.”

The James Webb Space Telescope, launched back in 2021, is proving to be a vital tool for studying the Fomalhaut system. Its infrared sensors are providing astronomers with unprecedented detail in studying the composition and distribution of the debris fields. This telescope will enable us to delve deeper into the mysteries of Fomalhaut and potentially discover the planets responsible for the system’s peculiar debris belt structure.

The Fomalhaut system is a fascinating subject of study for those intrigued by the universe and its wonders. As we continue to explore and study this system, we may uncover even more surprises and revelations that will revolutionize our understanding of the universe. Fomalhaut is just one of many wonders waiting to be explored, and the James Webb Space Telescope is opening the door for us to explore them.

Apple Watch Series 9 to Get a Power Boost with A15-Based Chip, Says Insider

The world’s highest-selling smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 8, is in for a significant update. According to Mark Gurman, the company is planning to revamp the model’s S9 chip with the A15 technology. The S8 chip in the previous Apple Watch Series 8 was not a major update from its predecessor, the S7. However, the S9 chip will reportedly offer a far more significant leap forward in terms of power and efficiency.

The S9 Chip will be a significant upgrade from the S8 Chip

Gurman shared his insights on the “Power On” Discord channel for Bloomberg’s newsletter, where he confirmed that the new Apple Watch models are due for an updated SoC. He also mentioned that the new chip could be much more powerful than the previous generation. Moreover, he believes that the S9 chip would not just be a re-brand of the previous generation’s chip. Instead, it could be a completely new processor based on the A15 Bionic.

Apple Watch

The A15 Bionic chip is currently used in the iPhone 13 series and is renowned for its outstanding performance. The 5-nanometer chip features a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. If the Apple Watch Series 9 chip uses similar technology to the A15 chip, it could result in improved performance and efficiency.

This news comes after Gurman’s report on watchOS 10, which will reportedly have a “fairly extensive upgrade” with many notable changes to the user interface. Gurman suggested that it is essential for watchOS to have a big year for the tenth version since Apple Watch hardware needs a major bump as compared to its previous versions to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.

The new Apple Watch Series 9 chip is expected to be a game-changer for the smartwatch market. With the A15-like technology, the new chip could offer exceptional performance and efficiency, making it an essential upgrade for Apple Watch enthusiasts. It remains to be seen how Apple will implement the A15 technology into the new chip, but we can expect a significant leap forward in terms of the watch’s overall performance.

Revamped Google Photos Interface is a Game-Changer for Tablet Users

Google Photos is a cloud-based photo-sharing and storage service developed by Google. It allows users to store, share and manage their photos and videos online with unlimited storage space. Google Photos offers various features such as automatic backups, smart organization, and easy photo editing tools. Users can access their photos from any device with an internet connection and can share them with others through links or directly from the app. The app also uses artificial intelligence to create collages, animations, and albums automatically. The company is now updating the tablet version of Google Photos with a new, far better-optimized editing layout.

Google Photos on Tablets will now have Editing Tools on a Side Panel

The app’s layout on tablets and in landscape mode has been a cause of frustration for some users, as it simply stretched out the phone app. Fortunately, the new layout promises to solve this issue and make Google Photos look more like other photo editing apps in editing mode.

The new layout shows the editing tools on a side panel, providing a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. This makes it easier to navigate and zoom in and out of pictures while keeping the tools accessible and organized. The familiar enhance, crop, rotate, magic eraser, and color adjustments are still present, making it easy for users to continue using the tools they are accustomed to.

The new tablet editing interface is a welcome addition for users who have been struggling with the app’s layout on larger screens. However, the new layout is not yet available to everyone, and users will need to update to the latest version of the app to enable it. Additionally, the new layout is not applicable in portrait mode, so users will need to switch to landscape mode to take advantage of the new design. Google Photos also got received a new update recently that allows users to enter complex queries in the search bar, allowing them to find pictures in their library faster and more efficiently.

VIOFO WM1 Dash Cam: Offers a safe and secure driving experience

VIOFO, an innovative manufacturer of dash cams, has launched its latest product, the WM1, which is designed to be small, simple, and unobtrusive while still offering a range of impressive features. With a 2K Quad HD processor, high-quality Sony STARVIS sensor, super night vision, Wi-Fi connectivity, parking mode, GPS logger, and voice notifications, this pill-shaped dash cam provides power and peace of mind.

The WM1 is available for purchase at an affordable cost of $99.99 from VIOFO or $89.99 on Amazon.us.

VIOFO WM1 boasts a simple and screenless design. Despite its lack of a display, the camera is powered by a Sony STARVIS image sensor, allowing it to record in stunning 2K Quad HD resolution, making it a superior option compared to other screenless dash cams available in the market. The WM1’s compact size is further reduced due to the lack of a screen, which helps to minimize heat generation, and invisible wiring ensures that it does not compromise the neatness and aesthetics of your vehicle.

The WM1’s compact size and display-free design make it more user-friendly and allow it to fit perfectly behind or under your car’s rearview mirror. It’s small frame and hidden wiring also contribute to the aesthetics of your car’s interior without obstructing your view, making it suitable for all types of vehicles and reducing the likelihood of theft.

Key Features:

DESIGN

Compared to other screenless dash cams with mounts on top, the WM1 has a rotatable camera mount fixed at the back, making it smaller and easier to install covertly. It offers multiple angles for optimal viewing and the Type-C interface on the mount enhances wiring aesthetics and speed. The device comes with a bigger emergency lock button with a raised dot for easy identification and locking of files as evidence for traffic disputes or insurance claims.

2K Quad HD 30fps

With WM1, you can capture essential details like road signs and number plates both at day and night, with its stunning 1440P QHD recording at 30fps. The 135˚ angle of the camera provides a clear and broad view, reducing blind spots and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your journey, capturing everything just as you see it.

Sony STARVIS Image Sensor

Equipped with a 1/2.8-inch Sony STARVIS image sensor, WM1 features Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology that balances exposure over highlights and shadows, enabling it to capture more details in dark environments and provide safer and more reliable night vision. This feature allows the camera to reduce overexposure in very bright conditions, such as when the sun is shining directly into the lens, and improve image quality by increasing the overall brightness in very dark conditions, such as when driving through a tunnel or at night.

Built-in Wi-Fi

With a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection, the WM1 enables seamless transfer and viewing of footage, and adjusting dashcam settings from a smartphone app. You can live stream, playback recorded videos, download, or share video files with ease, making it simple to access, store, and share video evidence in case of any accident or incident.

Intelligent Parking Modes

WM1 offers three smart parking modes that provide continuous surveillance of your car even when you’re away. These modes include Auto Event Detection, Time Lapse Recording, and Low Bitrate Recording, ensuring that you are always protected and giving you peace of mind no matter where you go.

Auto Event Detection

During parking, WM1 can detect moving objects or impacts and automatically start recording for 35 seconds. With the buffered function, it records a 35-second video that starts 5 seconds before and ends 30 seconds after the detected event, ensuring no critical moments are missed.

Time Lapse Recording and Low Bitrate Recording

The dashcam offers the option to record video at lower frame rates of 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 fps without recording audio, which saves both storage and power. It also allows continuous recording with audio at a reduced file size, enabling you to save more space on the MicroSD card.

Built-in GPS Module

WM1 is equipped with a GPS logger that accurately records the vehicle’s location, speed, and time data, making it an ideal tool for insurance claim situations. The GPS data can be viewed when playing back the video on the VIOFO App or a computer, providing detailed information for insurance purposes.

Auto Emergency Footage Lock

When a sudden collision or crash occurs, the dashcam’s built-in G-sensor can automatically detect it and lock the footage to prevent it from being overwritten. This way, the accident scene can be accurately reconstructed, providing you with peace of mind.

Voice Notification

The WM1 comes equipped with intelligent voice notifications that serve as a virtual assistant to keep you informed about important dashcam events, such as video protection, changes in settings, and memory card errors. This feature allows you to stay fully focused on the road without worrying about missing crucial moments.

Optional Accessories:

VIOFO offers a range of optional accessories to enhance the functionality of WM1, including the HK4 Hardwire Kit, Circular Polarizing Lens, and Bluetooth Remote Control, among others.
