Apple Dominates the Smartphone Market in China

The competition in the smartphone market continues at full speed. However, one brand manages to outperform its competitors in almost every market. You guessed it right, Apple is way ahead of its competitors, especially in the premium segment. Moreover, the company maintains this dominance even in markets such as China where domestic brands are very strong. According to latest reports, Apple reaches highest ever monthly market share in China.

One in every four devices sold in China was an iPhone

Apple reached its highest ever monthly market share (25%) in China in October 2022, while becoming the #1 OEM in the country for the second consecutive month, according to Counterpoint Research’s Monthly Market Pulse Service. While the sales for other key OEMs declined in October, Apple grew 21% MoM. In YoY terms, China’s sales declined 15%, while Apple’s sales declined just 4%.

Counterpoint Research’s Monthly Market Pulse Service

Apple has been reaching new heights in terms of market share in China during the last two years. It reached a record monthly market share in November and December 2020, and in October, November and December 2021. Notably, 2020 was also the year when US sanctions were imposed on Huawei.

Commenting on the market growth in China, Research Director Ethan Qi said, “China’s market has been sluggish due to multiple factors, including macroeconomic pressures and COVID-19 lockdowns hitting consumer sentiment. Overall sales declined 4% MoM. However, Apple managed to defy the market trend. This also shows the resilient nature of the premium segment.

Looking at the trend for the last two years in China, it is evident that Apple has emerged as a clear winner of Huawei’s share in the premium market. It has almost become an undisputed leader in China’s premium segment. The iPhone 14 series has started off well with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max performing better than the previous generation. The iPhone 13 also continues to do well, as the iPhone 14 offers little differentiation from the iPhone 13.”

An Engineer Fixes Apple’s Biggest Shortcoming By Making a Curved iPhone 14 Pro Max

The evolution of smartphones is progressing very fast. Every year, performance and camera features are getting better than the predecessor models, but the same cannot be said about the design. For example, Apple has been criticized for using the same design with almost every iPhone. Lastly, an engineer who decided to fix Apple’s shortcomings made a curved iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Curved iPhone 14 Pro Max gain a lot of attention on social media

An engineer using the nickname fix Apple (@lipilipsi) on Twitter made a curved iPhone 14 Pro Max. Fix Apple said that he achieved this result by changing the middle frame of the phone. In the video, the phone looks flawless, and even Dynamic Island stays in place. However, there is no detail about whether the touch screen is working or not.

As you know, Apple doesn’t like their phones tampered with. As you know, Apple does not want their phones to be tampered with and is very sensitive about using original parts. Therefore, there is a possibility that there will be a problem after this process. Still, fix Apple promises to make curved screens to people who want it.

Unfortunately, there is no information about the cost of this process or on which models it is possible. For now, we’ve only seen the iPhone 14 Pro Max. @lipilipsi‘s bio says he’s engineered at Apple and Huawei. Unfortunately, we are unable to verify this information. So be careful if you want a curved iPhone 14.

Apple fans insist on design change

The curved iPhone isn’t the only modified iPhone Apple enthusiasts have made. Recently, a fan in China managed to convert his iPhone into a Galaxy Z Flip-like foldable smartphone. The video of the foldable iPhone showcases different parts of other foldable smartphones with a clamshell design. This fan’s project was a year-long effort, but it is still just a prototype and won’t come close to an actual finished product from a major tech giant.

Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 With Improved Drop Resistance on Rough Surfaces Launched

Corning has launched the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It is the successor to the Victus that was announced back in 2020. The newest generation glass from the company is touted to offer improved drop resistance. Corning says that Gorilla Glass has been used in eight billion devices, across 45 major brands and 85 percent of buyers in China, India, and the US consider durability as the most important factor in smartphone purchase.

Smartphones today are highly prone to potential damage since the glass is quite fragile and due to thinner, and lighter designs. Additionally, the larger the screen diagonal is, the more stress will be put on the glass when it is dropped. Corning’s latest generation Gorilla Glass Victus 2 focuses more on drop resistance. The company has adopted a new glass composition which will potentially save devices from accidental drops on rough surfaces. Asphalt can leave the screen scratched up while concrete in the worst cases can shatter the display glass.

Corning says that the drop performance of the Victus 2 has improved by up to 1m on 80-grit and up to 2m on 180-grit. In lab tests, the latest-generation glass is seen withstanding one-meter (hip height) drops on concrete whereas it survived two meters (head height) drops on an asphalt surface. Victus 2 also ensures 2x scratch resistance than previous versions and 4x better scratch performance compared to its competitors.

In a statement, Corning said “today’s smartphones are nearly 15% heavier, and screen sizes are up to 10% larger, than they were four years ago – increasing both the stress on the cover glass and the probability of damage. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 redefines tough for consumers and OEMs”.

The new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, Notebook PCs, cameras, and more devices. Smartphones boasting the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 are expected to hit the markets in the coming months. Although there is no word on which would be the first device to adorn the latest generation glass, we assume it to be Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series.

Apple adds 2013 & 2014 iMacs to Obsolete list, Watch Series 2 is now Vintage

Earlier this week, Apple updated its list of vintage and obsolete products list. The company has added some older models from its iMacs lineup and even one of its Apple Watch model from a couple of years ago on this list.

Looking at the new list, the Cupertino based giant has officially labeled the iMac models from the year 2013 and 2014 on to the obsolete list. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 2 has been added to the Vintage list. For those unaware, these same iMacs were on the Vintage list before being moved to the Obsolete list. When a device is added to the latter, they are finally no longer eligible for official repairs from the brand. So those that have purchased Macs from the late 2013, which is the 21.5 inch iMacs, the 2014 21.5 inch iMac, and the 2014 27 inch Retina 5K iMac, have to look for unofficial repairs if they face any issues.

Apple

The company typically adds products to the obsolete list around 7 years after its first sale and discontinues for obsolete products. On the other hand, the Apple Watch Series 2 are now on the vintage list. This vintage products list features devices that went on sale around 5 years since its launch but less than 7 years from its announcement. These products are still officially serviceable, however, the repairs would still depend upon the availability of the specific parts for your vintage device.

Out of the 20,000 wafers, the iPhone maker will use around a third of the entire output alone. This news is also in line with Apple CEO Tim Cook who has previously told employees that the company plans to source chips from the Arizona factory soon.

Reportedly, the new plans will be announced in Phoenix next week with key figures like President Joe Biden, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Other notable figures include AMD CEO Lisa Su and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang. Apart from the 4nm production, TSMC will apparently also officially has plans for a second phase that involves an adjacent facility that will produce more advanced 3nm chips as well.

Oppo Reno 8T May Launch Soon With 33W Charging Support

Last week, Oppo debuted the Oppo Reno 9 series in China. However, it seems that the company is still not done with the Reno 8 series. That’s because a new Reno 8 model has now emerged on the internet.

This upcoming Reno phone is officially called ‘Oppo Reno8 T.’ But let’s just call it Oppo Reno 8T as it is more readable.

The forthcoming Oppo Reno 8T bears the model number CPH2481. It has been spotted on the websites of multiple certification agencies. The list includes TKDN, EEC, BIS, SIRIM, and Element Materials Technology.

Unfortunately, the listings do not say much about the handset, except for its name and charging speed. SIRIM has revealed its branding, while Element Materials Technology has disclosed that the device will carry support for 33W fast wired charging.

There have been multiple Reno smartphones with alphabet namings in the past. Almost all of them were rebranded devices for select markets.

But this time around, the Reno 8T has been even certified by BIS for release in India. For those unaware, Oppo has not launched this type of Reno phone in India in a very long time.

Going by the slower 33W charging speed, the smartphone could be cheaper than the standard Reno 8, which has support for 80W charging. Hence, we expect downgrades in other specs as well.

Just like any other product these days, almost all details of the Oppo Reno 8T may leak before it goes official in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to learning more about it.

Samsung launches GDDR6W memory with great capacity & bandwidth upgrades

Samsung had just announced its latest GDDR6 memory chips that is set to offer a number of improvements over its predecessors. These upgrades will seek to meet needs of massive memory and increased computing power scenarios.

As per official notes, the South Korean tech giant has unveiled the “industry’s first next-generation graphics DRAM technology.” This offers major improvements over traditional GDDR6 memory products by offering an additional DRAM device to basically double the capacity and bandwidth without bringing any of the possible impacts that might be faced with the larger form factor. Samsung has stated that the new GDDR6W will bring all of these improvements while still having the same energy consumption as the regular GDDR6.

Furthermore, the new chips will also allow customers to use the new technology without having any major change in existing hardware. The new Samsung GDDR6W features a new technology that the brand calls FOWLP or Fan Out Wafer Level Packaging. The new packaging process helps offer a more compact design with finer writing patterns. This allows for a packaging that has a reduced typical thickness from 1.1mm to 0.7mm.

According to CheolMin Park, Vice President of New Business Planning, Samsung Electronics Memory Business, “With GDDR6W, we’re able to foster differentiated memory products that can satisfy various customer needs – a major step towards securing our leadership in the market.” The company hopes that the new GDDR6W memory will enable better performance for AI and high performance computing accelerators. Although, this will also be announced on small forfactor devices like notebooks as well.
