Older Samsung Galaxy phones are reportedly facing battery swelling issues

Old Samsung phones are reportedly facing battery swelling issues. This has been found by popular YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss (aka Arun Maini) in a video detailing a worrying set of events. Maini discovered several ageing Galaxy smartphones that he has stored over the years in a proper room temperature and position. What’s worrying is that the battery swelling issue is only limited to Samsung devices and not any other phone brand.

Older Samsung Galaxy phones facing battery issues

Samsung has faced a history of battery issues that even made them recall the Galaxy Note 7 units on large scale. However, the South Korean brand’s battery troubles are not a thing of the past. The list of phones affected by the battery swelling issue includes the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S10 Galaxy S8, S10e, and the S10 5G. Worst of all the two-year-old Galaxy Z Fold 2 is also part of the list. The S20 FE also suffered the same fate but to a lesser extent. The blown-up battery prompted the back panel of some smartphones to pop open.

Maini acknowledges that the recent heatwave that struck the UK could have raised the atmospheric temperature in the storage room which may also have led to the swelling of lithium batteries. But to make matter worse, the problem is only exclusive to Samsung devices. All older phones from other brands including Apple, Google, and ASUS that the YouTuber checked were unaffected and worked without any issue.

The issue gets bigger when Maini found other users reporting the same battery swelling issue on Samsung phones. YouTuber Matt Ansini claimed that every Galaxy phone they had for more than 3 years in their storage had batteries expanded like this. Another prominent YouTuber MKBHD aka Marquess Brownlee claimed that the only smartphone battery swelling issues he encounters are from Samsung and never any other brand. JerryRigEverthing who is known for device teardowns also corroborated all these reports.

Going by the list, it seems like only the Galaxy phones dating before the S20 series are facing the battery issue. Additionally, at present, it has been reported by users who have been storing the device for a long time and haven’t used it regularly. If you own any of the Samsung Galaxy phones, you can check to see if their battery is looking fine. And if it doesn’t users should get in touch with Samsung even if the device is out of warranty.

Twitter is testing a TikTok styled Immersive Video scrolling mode

Twitter is planning on adopting a new feature that is quite similar to the video scrolling feature on TikTok. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube already have such a format for videos, and it appears that Twitter is the latest to hop on this trend.

Twitter

The social media giant is currently testing the new feature on its latest version of the application. Through this, users can play videos on full screen mode with a single click, offering you an easy and immersive viewing experience. For those who want to try it out, you simply have to open the Twitter app and tap on the search button at the bottom. Scrolling down from this will display the option to find the “Videos For You” section.

Selecting this option will take you a full screen Immersive Video mode in which you can scoll up to browse videos one after the other. The videos being displayed will be based on your followers as well as those you might n`ot follow. Although, the selection will likely be based on the content you’ve viewed recently. As of right now, this feature is exclusive to Android users, but it should soon make its way to iOS users as well.

Twitter

In the Videos For You section, the content being shown will also display the number of views the videos have garnered. Furthermore, the tweets will also show Tweets as well as trends that users might be interested in. At the moment, the new video mode is only available in select regions that use Twitter in English.

The news arrives from a Galaxy Club report that claims that it is certain that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 200 megapixel camera. Just earlier, we had covered new render leaks that showcased the design of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It revealed that the device will not feature any major changes in its design over its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. But while the design might not have changed, the primary camera is seeing a big bump in resolution.

Keep in mind that a higher pixel count doesn’t necessarily translate to a better image, although, it will allow Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra to capture more details and offer more ways to utilize the larger resolution images. Furthermore, the Galaxy S22 Ultra had one of the best cameras in a smartphone this year, so we can expect the Galaxy S23 Ultra also having some great image quality.

The company already has a 200 megapixel camera sensor, so it was only a matter of time before the flagship models getting such a shooter. Notably, the report from Galaxy Club also stated that the S23 Ultra will still feature the same 10 megapixel periscopic telephoto lens that offers 10x zoom and a 10 megapixel telephoto module with 3x optical zoom. However, no details were shared regarding the ultra wide angle lens.

Amazon launches Halo Rise that can track sleep by your breathing pattern

Amazon had just recently announced a couple of new smart home products for the global market. This included the new Echo Dot series of smart speakers, the new Kindle Scribe, and the latest Fire TV Cube as well. Alongside these new products, the company also announced the new Halo Rise, which has an interesting feature that can track your sleep by your breathing pattern. So let’s have a look.

Amazon

The new Halo Rise is basically a bedside lamp that has a built in sleep tracker that can work without a camera or a microphone. Furthermore, it uses a “no contact, low energy sensor,” which can sense movements and respiratory patterns. In simpler terms, it can sense your breathe and, thanks to its machine learning prowess, it can detect the expansion and contraction of your body when you’re asleep.

Through this, Amazon claims that it has “trained and validated the device’s sleep algorithm against the clinical gold standard for sleep analysis called overnight polysomnography.” Additionally, even if there is another person or an animal sharing the bed with you, the Halo Rise can detect it and exclude their activity while only mapping your data in the sleep summary, which is offered to you everyday. These reports also offers suggestions to help improve your sleep by optimizing your environment.

The Halo Rise also has built in sensors to measure the temperature, humidity and brightness of your room, and is also a lamp that also supports Alexa. Notably, you can even turn off the sleep tracking feature if you’re more concerned about privacy. The device will go on sale later this year and has a price tag of 140 US Dollars.

Samsung to soon sell newer refurbished smartphone models

One of the ways a buyer can avoid burning a whole through their wallets when purchasing a new phone is opting for a refurbished model. Samsung does sell some refurbished models even for its flagship Galaxy S series, but now, it appears that we can soon expect to see newer models being offered from this refurbished category.

Samsung-Galaxy-S22-Bora-Purple-2

For those unaware, a refurbished phone is basically devices that any company services and brings back to “new” condition while still offering the same warranty. The South Korean tech giant offers a number of models through what it calls Re-Newed segment, which includes the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy S21, and even the Galaxy S10. The availability of the models are based on regions, but, typically you won’t find a current generation model also being listed on the refurbished list.

But this might soon change, as Samsung confirmed in a statement to TechRadar that it plans on expanding the range of its Re-Newed smartphones to include newer models in the near future. In other words, we can expect the Galaxy S22 lineup to also be offered in the refurbished category sometime soon. The Re-Newed models are typically more affordable than the regular models, so it should make these high end models attractive for customers.

Unlike a second hand model, the refurbished/renewed models are typically tested by engineers and also come with some new part replacements to make them good as new. There are third party companies that offer refurbished ones for cheaper prices than their MRP, but brands like Apple and Samsung have their own offering as well.

Google to shut down Stadia game streaming service in January 2023

Google’s one of the ambitious products of recent times, Stadia, a digital gaming service, is being shut down. The service, which was launched in 2019, will be shutting down in the coming months, on 18th January 2023 to be precise.

The announcement comes at a time when the company is looking to cut costs. One of the reasons behind this decision is believed to be the lack of traction with the users than what the company had expected.

Google Stadia Game Streaming Service

In a blog post making the announcement, Phil Harrison, Vice President at Google, said, “We’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.” It was launched as an opportunity to put Google’s cloud streaming technology to work and enable gameplay at a massive scale.

The company says that it will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store and all game and add-on content purchases at the Stadia store. The majority of the refunds will be processed by mid-January, and the players will have access to their games library to play till 18th January.

Google adds that it will continue supporting gaming in other areas, along with helping developers build and distribute games on Google Play and Play Games. The technology developed for Stadia may end up being used in other Google services.

The Stadia game streaming service was announced to compete against other gaming services, including Sony’s PlayStation Plus cloud streaming, Amazon’s Luna, and Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced that he wants the company to be 20 percent more efficient, and as a part of that, the Mountain View-based giant has been shutting down products. Recently, it was announced that the upcoming Pixel laptop has been canceled, and funding for Area-120 in-house incubator has been cut.
