Samsung patents smartphone with slidable wraparound display

Samsung was one of the first brands to ever launch a foldable smartphone. Since then, it has released a number of such models. But it seems that the company doesn’t plan on using flexible screens for just the foldable phone format alone.

Samsung

As per a new patent, the South Korean tech giant is possibly working on a new handset that features a flexible sliding display technology that wraps around the device itself. In other words, it appears to be a smartphone with a curved edge display from the front, but the screen panel doesn’t stop at the edges and extends to cover some portion of the back cover as well. The patent adds that the device has two housings and a flexible display that has two states. In one of these modes, the display wraps around the handset, while the other mode has it extend outward to have the front panel become larger by sliding out.

This patent was spotted on WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), Via MySmartPrice. So while the device might look pretty normal from the front, the rear is where it’s innovative design truly shines. Notably, it even resembles the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone that featured a display that wrapped around the phone. Looking at the patent sketches, we can see the flexible display extends to the back of the handset and covers around half of the rear panel. Meanwhile, the remaining half houses the triple camera module.

Samsung

Interestingly, the rear camera can also double as the selfie shooter as well. This is confirmed in the patent images where we can see the smaller half display on the rear showcasing the camera app. In other words, one can see the image the camera will be taking similar to a viewfinder on a DSLR camera. It is unclear if the brand is actually working on such a product or simply covering all bases. So stick around for more updates.

WhatsApp Message Reactions & 2GB file sharing features launched

Last month, WhatsApp confirmed that the Message Reactions and 2GB File Sharing size features that the company has been testing will soon hit the stable build. And now, the features have finally begun to roll out.

whatsapp china

Previously, WhatsApp allowed file and media sharing of up to 100MB size. Now, this restriction will be removed and users will be able to share bigger files like high definition videos, etc due to the increased 2GB data sharing cap.

The Message Reactions feature has also debuted in some regions. WhatsApp has stated that users will get a limited choice of emojis when it comes to reactions, however, the feature will later get support for “all emojis and skin tones.” Currently, the reactions feature supports six emojis which are – 👍❤️😂😮😢🙏.

Other than that, Groups on WhatsApp can now accommodate twice the number of participants as before. It now has a limit of 512 users per group. WhatsApp also increased the participant cap on WhatsApp group calls. The feature now supports up to 32 participants in group calls, however, it is only limited to the smartphone version.

The company has plans to soon introduce more interesting features like the “Companion device” that will allow users to use one WhatsApp account on multiple smartphones or tablets. So stay tuned for more updates on that.

Lenovo YOGA AIO 7 is a 27-inch All-in-One PC with rotatable screen

Lenovo first rolled out the YOGA AIO (All-in-One) desktop PC series in China in October 2020. The PC was later released for the global market last year. The Chinese tech giant has now released an upgraded version of the all-in-one PC and it is dubbed Lenovo YOGA AIO (All-in-One) desktop PC.

The YOGA AIO (All-in-One) desktop PC packs a mammoth 27-inch display with 4K resolution. The display can be used in the landscape mode as well as portrait view, thanks to the screen that can rotate 90 degrees. The specs and design are markedly similar to the previous model but on this model, you get the ability to wirelessly cast the screen of any smartphone supporting DLNA, AirPlay, Miracast, or LElink to the 27-inch rotation monitor.

Ordinarily, it wasn’t supposed to be spectacular to use a screen in the vertical orientation but due to an increase in the number of video formats in the vertical orientation, the rotating form factor may come in useful and has gained recent popularity due to this reason. In addition, the rotatable screen is also useful to creators who may edit videos and photos in that space.

In terms of the specs, the Lenovo YOGA AIO 7 packs an AMD Ryzen 6000 processor with optional AMD Radeon RX 6600M graphics. The PC also comes with a USB-C port which lets you connect to a laptop, allowing the control of both devices using the same peripheral device.Lenovo YOGA AIO 7

There is no word yet on the pricing and availability details but the company did reveal that the new AIO will not be sold in North America. It will only be available in “other select geographical markets” that are yet to be specified.

Qualcomm delays Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus launch to H2 2022: Report

Qualcomm has been rumored to be gearing up for the launch of its next gen flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC, for a while. However, a new report has suggested that this new high end processor has been delayed.

Xiaomi-snapdragon-8-gen-1-plus-poster
For illustration purposes only

The news arrives from known Weibo tipster, Digital Chat Station, who stated that the top end chipset that succeeds the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC will now be arriving sometime in the second half of this year. Previously, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC from the American chipmaker was expected to release earlier due to production issues faced by its supplier, Samsung. However, it appears that the shift to the upcoming chipset was delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak in China.

Recently, there has been a surge of COVID-19 infections in the nation, which has caused the government to impose lockdowns in various cities. Some of these cities are also manufacturing hubs where a number of production factories are set up. Furthermore, these restrictions will reportedly not be relaxed anytime soon since it may “undoubtedly lead to a massive number of infections,” as per a Chinese political leader.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus

As of right now, Qualcomm is rumored to debut the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ processor with the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. Digital Chat Station had stated that the reason for the chip making its first appearance on the Moto smartphone is because Lenovo has a “good relationship” with the chipmaker. No official information regarding the chipset is known at the moment, but it is expected to feature a more powerful GPU, while retaining a similar performing CPU.

Huawei

The patent was filed with the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office and was titled “flexible screen support mechanism and rollable electronic equipment.” The documents carried the patent number CN114439843A (Via ITHome). Looking at this document, the patent describes an electronic device that has a flexible display technology that is supported by a unique that is housed under the screen. Notably, the structure observed in the patent sketches that supports the device’s display also includes a rotating component as well. It has a rotating shaft mechanism that is covered by a protective case on either side. Although, it is unclear if the rotating process itself is automated or manual. Meanwhile, the support mechanism has various brace like structures that enable the foldable screen.

As of right now, it is unclear if this patented device is actually a smartphone. It is quite likely that the product is a portable display of sorts that is meant to be carried around with a low powered chipset for basic UI functions that is paired with a small storage as well. Keep in mind that this is still just a patent and we have no way of confirming whether the Chinese tech giant is actually working on a such a product or is simply covering all bases.
