Qualcomm to switch to new naming schemes starting with the Snapdragon 855

It wasn’t too long ago that Qualcomm announced that its mobile processors should be referred to as Mobile Platforms. So instead of saying the Snapdragon 660 processor, one should say Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform. Now, a bigger change is coming to the way the chipsets are named.

According to Roland Quandt, the American chip manufacturer may be switching to a new naming scheme. This new naming scheme will make it easier to identify chipsets used for mobiles and those used in PCs. Proof of the new naming scheme has been found in databases and LinkedIn profiles of some Qualcomm employees.

Qualcomm

At the moment, the new naming scheme is already in use for two upcoming chipsets. The Snapdragon 855 (SDM855) codenamed “Hena” which will succeed the current Snapdragon 845 flagship, is now being referred to as the SM8150. The SoC will measure 12.4 x 12.4 mm and will be a 7nm chipset manufactured by TSMC.

Winfuture.de reports that the SM1850 may likely not have an integrated 5G modem. Instead, Qualcomm will include a Snapdragon X24 model with support for Cat. 20 LTE. This is surprising as it was reported earlier this year that the SDM855 a.k.a. the SM8150 will come with the SDX50 modem and be known as the Snapdragon 855 Fusion Platform. The only plausible explanation is that there will be two versions of the SDM855 – one with the X24 modem for non-5G phones and the other with the X55 modem for 5G devices.

SM8150 proof

The second chipset that has also gotten the name change is the upcoming Snapdragon 1000 (SDM1000) codenamed “Poipu” which will power ARM-based computers. The chipset has appeared in documents as the SCX8180 while still keeping the aforementioned codename.

The SC8180 will measure 20 x 15 millimeters which means it is significantly bigger than the SDM855/SM8150. Production of the chipset will also be handled by TSMC and it will be 7nm too.

There are two other processors that have also appeared in documents with the new naming scheme but there is no confirmation as to their true identities. They are the SM7150 and the SM7250. There are speculations that they are probably the new names for the newly-announced Snapdragon 670 and its closer but more powerful sibling, the Snapdragon 710.

Xiaomi launches the Viomi Smart Gas Water Heater 1A priced at 899 yuan (~$130)

Xiaomi has unveiled a new product under the Youpin crowdfunding platform. The product is dubbed Viomi Smart Gas Water Heater 1A and is manufactured by Viomi Electrical Technology Co. Ltd, one of Xiaomi’s ecological chain company. The company has a long chain of Xiaomi-branded products to its credit such as Xiaomi Water Purifier, MIJIA Thermoelectric Kettle and others. Apart from that, Viomi also has a host of other products that are not Xiaomi branded but of exceptional quality. Like the Smart water Heater which was launched a couple of months back. The Smart Gas Water Heater is the latest addition and as the name implies, the gadget gets its energy supply from gas.Viomi Smart Gas Water Heater 1A

The Viomi Smart Gas Water Heater 1A has a main chamber with a gas burner which converts the chemical energy provided by the gas to heat and there are built-in energy-saving features. The gadget has a water intake pipe which is connected to the home’s water supply. There is also a hot water outlet as well as a gas intake valve in the middle. All three outlets are located on the bottom aspect. Cold water flows into the water heater when a hot water tap is opened inside your home. The water flow is detected by a sensor that ignites the gas burner, to heat the water in the heat exchanger. The water typically follows a serpentine pattern through the heat exchanger, absorbing as much heat as possible. The gas valve automatically adjusts to the rate of water flow in order to conserve energy.Viomi Smart Gas Water Heater 1A

In addition, the water heater can be mounted on the wall but needs a space of 600mm from the floor and ceiling. It is also required that a space of 250mm be left on both sides. The water heater has a 13L flow rate and can supply water at 13L per minute which could sufficiently meet the hot water needs of one kitchen and two bathrooms. The gadget is also equipped with digital thermostat technology and can achieve accurate temperature control of ±1 °C which is constant regardless of the season (winter or summer). There is a digital LED display screen which shows the water temperature in real-time. It also comes with smart app control which can be used to adjust the temperature from the smartphone.

DJI Phantom 5 might debut on August 23 alongside Mavic Pro 2

DJI has confirmed that it will hold a new press conference on August 23. This conference was expected to be held on July 18, but the company has decided to delay it, and now the moment has finally come. It will not be a normal event, and according to a company’s post on Instagram, this conference will be the most important conference of the year, that means the most important product of the year may be announced.

It is kind of confirmed that we will finally see the new Mavic Pro 2 quadcopter. But given what the company said, people is also speculating that the Chinese-based giant will decide to showcase the Phantom 5, likely its best flagship-level drone. DJI has also published a video on YouTube where we can read “See the Bigger Picture” and “Now, get ready for the next chapter”.

According to some images surfaced, the Mavic Pro 2 should finally boast a modular camera, as well as a 360-degrees system which will be used to avoid obstacles. The drone will be equipped with a 1-inch CMOS sensor with Hasselblad optics and it will be able to do a 2x optical zoom (24 mm – 48 mm in detail). Prices may start from £769.

Here are the Sony Xperia phones updating to Android 9 Pie starting from November

After Google announced the latest iteration of its operating system, a new report has suggested that six Sony Xperia devices would get the update to Android 9.0 Pie from September to November. Now, the company has officially confirmed on its official blog which devices will update to Android 9 Pie and when it will happen. There will be six smartphones which will get the new update before each other, but unlike what the previous report suggested, the update will start rolling out in November.

The devices in question are Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Sony Xperia XZ1, Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, Sony Xperia XZ2, Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium. In two words, we are talking about all the last two generations of flagships released by the Japanese company. It makes sense that the company decided updating its flagship before all the other handsets. After these devices, in the first months of 2019, the update will reach to the entire XA2 line-up which is composed of Sony Xperia XA2, Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra, and Sony Xperia XA2 Plus.

Android 9.0 Pie

It was the last line-up of mid-rangers released by Sony, so it makes sense as well. If you’ve got a Sony device not from the ones listed above, you are out of luck, at least for now. Android 9.0 Pie will bring several improvements compared with the previous version, just like every major version of Android does. Among these improvements, there will surely be a longer battery life thanks to the new Adaptive Battery feature, as well as revamped graphics elements and features. There will be App Actions which will insert quick actions within the app launcher at certain times of the day basing on the user’s activities, improved notifications, Slices which will allow apps to insert themselves into the user’s searches, and more.

360 N7 Pro with SD710 to be priced above 2K Yuan, reveals CEO

On August 21, 360 Mobile will hold a new press conference where it will launch a new upper-midrange phone: 360 N7 Pro. Four days ahead of the official launch, the CEO of the Chinese company has published a post on the microblogging platform Weibo in which he gives details about the price of the upcoming device. According to CEO Li Kaixin, the handset will be the only 360 phone in the market to cost more than 2000 Yuan. In case you do not know, 2000 Yuan roughly translates into about $255 at the actual change. It will be costlier than other devices by this company, but at that price 360 N7 Pro will still remain a good deal if we consider what it will offer in terms of specifications.

Also, note that the variant to cost more than 2000 Yuan is said to be the most powerful configuration of the phone. Previously, Li Kaixin has already confirmed that this device will sport the new octa-core Snapdragon 710 chipset by Qualcomm. It is not a flagship SoC, but it is the only member of the new series of upper-midrange chipsets launched by the San Diego-based chipmaker. So, you can consider it the best midrange SoC by Qualcomm and the best processor if we exclude the Snapdragon 8xx series.

Snapdragon 710 is an octa-core SoC composed of two Kryo 360 high-performance cores (based on Cortex A75 CPUs) clocked at 2.2 GHz and six Kryo 360 low power custom cores (based on Cortex A55) running at a max frequency of 1.7 GHz, as well as an Adreno 616 GPU which guarantees 35 percent better graphics performance. According to Qualcomm, the chipset will also provide 25 percent better performance than the Snapdragon 660. Further, on the 360 N7 Pro the Snapdragon 710 will be paired with whopping 6 GB of RAM. Among the other rumored specs, there is a 6-inch (or above) display with a Full HD+ resolution.

OnePlus 6T to arrive as the company’s first US-carrier backed phone

Since the launch of the OnePlus 3T, OnePlus has continued to stick with the tradition of launching a second, slightly touched up variant. The first was the OnePlus 3T and we have seen the OnePlus 5T which arrived barely six months after the launch of the OnePlus 5. That tradition will continue with the OnePlus 6T which is expected to be launched in a few months time, possibly in October. It has now emerged that the OnePlus 6T will likely set the company on a pedestal that no other Chinese OEM has attained. The device will reportedly get the backing of US carrier, T-Mobile.OnePlus 6t

According to sources familiar with the deal which is said to still be in the negotiation table, the major US carrier will retail the OP6T and an agreement has been reached to that effect. However, OnePlus will need to get a technical approval which is the testing required by T-Mobile to get certification on the network. The failure of OnePlus to get this approval could delay the roll out as the OnePlus 6T may likely get launched in October.

This impressive move is a clear indication of OnePlus`’  progress in a terrain where fellow Chinese phone maker had tried and failed to make any headway. Huawei’s came close to secuting the backing of AT&T and Verizon to sell the Mate 10 Pro in the US but that was soon scuttled due to pressure from the US government. OnePlus already has a huge followers in the US , though, due to the relatively affordable pricing of its models compared to other similar flagships from heavy weights Samsung and Apple.

It also adopts the latest trend for the fingerprint sensor as the phone comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor, similar to the Vivo NEX and Xiaomi Mi 8. Under the hood, the Oppo R17 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 670 processor, making it the first device to be powered by the new chipset.

Nokia 6.1 gets price cut in India one week before the Nokia 6.1 Plus drops

HMD Global-controlled Nokia recently revealed that the Nokia 6.1 Plus will be launched in India on August 21. The 6.1 Plus comes as the global variant of the Nokia X6 which was launched in China a couple of months back. Ahead of the launch, Nokia has clashed the Nokia 6.1 also called Nokia 6 (2018) price in India.Nokia 6.1

The Nokia 6.1 was launched in China in January this year and was later unveiled for the global market at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) in February. The company soon launched the 3GB RAM variant of the device in India in April with a price tag of Rs. 16999 ($261). That was soon followed in May by a 4GB RAM version priced at Rs. 18,999. Presently, the price tags of both models have got up to Rs. 1,500 off. Subsequent, the 3GB RAM variant of the Nokia 6.1 now costs Rs. 15,499 on Nokia India’s website while the 4GB RAM model is available at Rs. 17,499.nokia 6.1 Plus

Read Also: As the Nokia 6.1 Plus India launch nears, HMD Global ramps up teaser campaign

The price reduction is likely directly related to the launch of the Nokia 6.1 Plus which is expected to feature a Snapdragon 636 chipset and 4GB / 6GB RAM. The Nokia X6 which will launch as Nokia 6.1 Plus was announced in China for 1,299 yuan (around Rs. 13,800) for the 4GB RAM+ 32GB storage variant, 1,499 yuan (around Rs. 16,000) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant, while the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant goes for 1,699 yuan (about Rs. 18,100). For comparison, these price points are too close to what the Nokia 6.1 variants are offered in India. This may have necessitated the generous price slash. However, we expect the Nokia 6.1 Plus to be priced higher than what it sells for in China.

Could Nokia 9 be the “most awaited phone” launching on August 21?

Nokia Mobile has confirmed through its Twitter account that it will be launching a new smartphone on August. The tweet claims that the phone launching in the coming week is “one of the most awaited phones”. Could it be the Nokia 9 flagship phone or the international edition of the Nokia X6?

Except for few brands like Motorola and Nokia, almost all major smartphone manufacturers have launched Snapdragon 845 powered smartphones. Last year, HMD Global had launched the Nokia 8 flagship phone in August. Early rumors had claimed that Nokia 9 may go official in August or September with advanced specs like curved OLED screen, in-screen fingerprint reader, Snapdragon 845, 8 GB RAM, triple rear cameras and more. The Nokia 9 with SD845 is surely one of the most awaited phones of this year, but the Aug. 21 launch event teasers released by the company do not really suggest that it will be launching a flagship phone next week.

HMD Global had launched the Nokia X6 as its first notched smartphone earlier this year in China. Since then the Nokia fans from various markets have been requesting the Finnish company to make it available outside China. Hong Kong and Taiwan are the only markets that have received the same handset as Nokia 6.1 Plus so far. Multiple markets such as Russia, Malaysia and India are also expected to soon receive Nokia 6.1 Plus handset.

Apart from the official Nokia Mobile Twitter account, even the Twitter handle of Nokia Mobile India has confirmed that there will be a launch event on Aug. 21. Some of the global variants of the Nokia 6.1 Plus such as TA-1116, TA-1103 and TA-1083 have been certified by Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG bodies. Also, the user guide of the Indian edition of the Nokia 6.1 Plus was spotted recently. Hence, it seems that the Nokia 6.1 Plus may get announced in the coming week in India and some other markets. It is likely to go official as Android One handset.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 pre-orders get lukewarm response in China

Samsung announced its flagship Galaxy Note 9 in China on August 15. Soon after, the Note 9 went up for pre-order on JD.com. Unlike other Chinese companies who allow free reservations on the site for sale, you had to pay 99 Yuan (~$14) in order to pre-order the device. Turns out, not many are willing to shell out the pre-order deposit for the new Note 9 on JingDong.

Note 9 pre-orders on JD

There are currently four variants of the Galaxy Note 9 on JD.com available for pre-order: 6+128GB storage option in three colors (Black, Blue, Copper) and 8+512GB option in one color (black). So far, the listing has received less than 1300 pre-orders for the device on the site. Considering the usual demand for a flagship like the Note series, this is definitely a lukewarm response from Chinese customers. The Frost Blue color seems to be the most pre-ordered variant on the site with over 500 registrations.

Galaxy Note 9 Hi-res render

Samsung has been struggling in China in the past few years and this is yet another example of the company’s flagships failing to garner enough attention from customers in China. The Galaxy Note 9 is one of the most powerful handsets of 2018, however, apart from its innovative S Pen, the phone doesn’t have much to distinguish itself from the competition. Even Samsung’s variable aperture tech is coming on the upcoming OPPO R17 Pro flagship which is going to be much cheaper at launch.

Considering the hefty 6999 Yuan price tag for the Note 9, customers can go for a cheaper yet powerful option like the innovative full screen OPPO Find X (starts at 4999 Yuan ~$756) or the Huawei P20 Pro with triple cameras (starts at 4999 Yuan ~$756). Unless Samsung decides to slash down its price to somewhere near to its Chinese competitors, it will be tough for the Note 9 to do well in the highly competitive Chinese market.
