Kirin 980 specs leaked; Maximum clocking speed could be 2.8 GHz

After powering multiple smartphones with Kirin 970 SoC, Huawei is pegged to debut the Kirin 980 flagship chipset at the upcoming IFA 2018 tech trade show in Berlin, Germany in September. A fresh report has revealed that the maximum frequency of the Kirin 980 will be 2.8 GHz and the SoC will be built with 7nm process technology by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

The Kirin 980 SoC is expected to include quad cores of Cortex A77 CPU and quad cores of Cortex A55. Rumors have it that for the first time Huawei may pack its own graphics processor inside it. The performance of the GPU of the Kirin 980 is speculated to be 1.5 times better than Adreno 630 that comes with Snapdragon 845.

Earlier this year, Huawei owned HiSilicon had introduced Balong 765 as the world’s first chip to support LTE Cat. 19 that supports maximum downloads at 1.6Gbps. Speculations are rife that the Kirin 980 may feature it.

Just as the Kirin 970 had arrived with a dedicated NPU unit, the Kirin 980 that is arriving as it successor will be also equipped with second-generation NPU 1M unit for enhanced AI performance. Cambricon Technologies that had worked with HiSilicon for building the NPU unit for Kirin 970 will be providing the second-generation NPU unit for Kirin 980 that is expected to deliver 5 trillion calculations per watt. Depending on AI processing required, it will be available in dual, quad and octa-core versions. Also, the smartphones powered by the new SoC will also be equipped with GPU Turbo graphics acceleration technology.

Kirin 710

The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are pegged to arrive as the first smartphones with Kirin 980 onboard. Earlier this year, the AnTuTu listing of the Kirin 980 powered Mate 20 Pro had surfaced with an extraordinary average benchmarking score of 356,819.

Huawei has recently launched the Kirin 710 SoC as a successor for the Kirin 659. The recently launched Nova 3i is the first smartphone from the company to feature the new 10nm mid-range SoC from the company. It includes quad cores of Cortex A73 that clocks at 2.2 GHz and quad cores of Cortex A53 CPU that works at 1.7 GHz along with ARM Mali G5 GPU that offers 1.3 times better performance than Kirin 659’s GPU.

Umidigi Z2 Review – A Beautiful Budget Phone with the Notch!

This is the Umidigi Z2  – a phone with the large notch display, nice design and great specs for the price. As always, stay tuned to the full Umidigi Z2 review to learn all the pros and cons of this device.

VIDEO

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9VajEw3huQ[/embedyt]

UNBOXING

The phone ships with a charger, USB cable, SIM ejector pin, a headset jack adapter and a pretty standard soft TPU case.

DESIGN

Design-wise, the Umidigi Z2 packs all the trends of 2018 in one package. You get a display with the notch that I found to be pretty nice and sharp, glass backplate that makes the phone a bit slippery, a metal trim and a dual camera system.

The phone is well-made and I found it to be really comfortable to hold in the hand due to rounded edges on the back. However, I found that the buttons rattle a little bit.

Other key features include a dual-camera system on the front and a hybrid dual-SIM card tray. Face unlock feature works surprisingly well, much better than on most of the budget phones.  The fingerprint scanner works fine but there is a significant delay between unlocking and the time the display lights up.

It’s disappointing that the phone has neither LED notification light nor headset jack. On the other hand, sound quality using the supplied adapter is decent.

The loudspeaker sound quality is not the best but it’s quite good. Here is an audio sample.

HARDWARE

In terms of hardware, the Umidigi Z2 ships with the spec sheet we’ve already seen on other budget phones and it looks quite good.

In reality, gaming performance is mediocre. You can play most of the 3D games on reduced graphics but you should still expect to see some lag and stutter. For example, there is quite a bit of lag while playing Pubg even on low graphics. Finally, the phone gets hot quite quickly.

USER INTERFACE

If you’ve seen other Umidigi phone reviews I’ve made before, you know that I praise their phones for using stock Android user interface. Obviously, there are a few neat extra features but in general, you get a nice and clean-looking UI that makes the phone run fast.

The phone does not lag or stutter and it just feels fast all the time. I’m quite impressed with the performance of this budget phone.

IMAGE QUALITY

The overall image quality is okay and you may be able to take pretty good pictures considering the price of the phone.

Low-light camera performance may not be the best but it’s okay for a budget phone.

Portrait picture quality is kind of average but better than quite a few other budget phones.

Selfies look okay but not really impressive. There is also a portrait mode but I can’t recommend using it since the pictures are way overexposed.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGl6e0URXTw[/embedyt]

1080p video shot using the main camera is kind of average and selfie video quality is quite good. Here is a short sample.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGl6e0URXTw[/embedyt]

If you want to see more camera samples or full resolution video tests, check out all the links in the video description.

CONNECTIVITY

In terms of connectivity, the phone supports global LTE bands and I found the call quality and signal reception to be pretty good.  Finally, GPS is accurate and it gets the position fast. In terms of sensors, there are quite a few of them including a gyroscope so you are all set if you want to use the phone with 360 content.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life on this phone is quite good but I expected better results considering a huge capacity power bank. On average, you should expect to get up to 7 hours of screen-on time.

In terms of charging, it takes under 2 hours to fully charge the phone with the supplied power brick.

CONCLUSIONS

The Umidigi Z2 is a phone that looks nice, it has a sharp display and the device is fast on the daily basis thanks to the stock Android user interface. In addition, the phone supports global LTE bands and finally, cameras can take pretty decent shots in daylight.

However, there are quite a few cons to consider. The phone does not have LED notification light, there is no headset jack, and gaming performance is mediocre

Hope you guys found this review useful and please consider all the pros and cons of this device before making the purchase.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 certification by Brazil’s telecoms agency confirms 4000mAh battery

The much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has just been confirmed to pack a massive 4000mAh battery by Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL) as seen in a leaked document. There have been a lot of rumours about this smartphone, some of which suggest the specs, colour variants and even the battery capacity. However, this is an official confirmation of the capacity.

This rumour on the massive battery capacity of the device has been in circulation since April which was later confirmed by some other sources in June. But the certification document solidifies those claims. The document didn’t say much about other aspects of the device.

As a reminder, the Galaxy Note 8 packs a 3,300mAh battery and so, this is a lot higher than that. Having a big battery would be so nice if it’s accompanied with fast charging techniques, perhaps Quick Charge 4.0 and beyond considering the fact that the wireless charger that will be presented alongside the handset won’t bring any innovative charging speeds. In other aspects, the Galaxy Note 9 is expected to have a slightly larger 6.4-inch display. The device will be made available in two variants, both of which have appeared on Geekbench. One will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 and the other will come with an Exynos 9810 SoC.

HMD Global Product Manager confirms Nokia X5 will be available outside China

The very first time we heard of the Nokia X5 was via 3D renders designed by OnLeaks and TigerMobiles. However, it wasn’t known as the Nokia X5 then but as the Nokia 5.1 Plus.

Nokia X5/Nokia 5.1 plus

Now that it has launched in China as the Nokia X5, the question is “will it launch outside China and when?”. For the first part of the question, we have official confirmation that the Nokia X5 will launch in other markets.

A few days ago, Juho Sarvikas who is the product manager at HMD Global, took to Twitter to announce the launch of the Nokia X5. A follower then requested the phone be made available outside of China and Mr. Sarvikas response, though amusing indirectly confirms it would be. Below is the conversation.

Nokia X5 5.1 Plus

For those who don’t understand the response, he is referring to a poll he created back when the Nokia X6 was announced to know if it should be launched globally. The result of the poll was a resounding yes. But this time, he thinks a poll isn’t necessary.

Samsung Wireless Charger Duo leaks, may launch alongside Galaxy Note 9

Samsung already has a bunch of wireless chargers available for its supported devices but they can only charge one device at a time. This year it plans to launch a new one that will be able to charge two devices at the same time.

Samsung Wireless Duo

An image of the charger called the Samsung Wireless Duo was leaked yesterday by Roland Quandt. The charger is a combination of Samsung’s 2018 Fast Charge Wireless Charging Stand and a smaller wireless pad.

With the charger, one will be able to charge a phone and a smartwatch or even two phones at the same time. Both pads also support fast wireless charging. The variant on the box is black but there is a chance that when it launches, it will be available in other colors.

Galaxy Tab S4 ditches fingerprint scanner for Iris Scanner and Intelligent Scan

One of the features of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S series is a front-mounted fingerprint scanner. However, that won’t be the case for this year’s Galaxy Tab S4.

Renders had already shown that the Galaxy Tab S4 was missing a front-mounted fingerprint scanner and didn’t have one on the back, though the latter wouldn’t have made any sense for a device with a 10-inch screen.

Galaxy Tab S4 intelligent scan

New reports have now confirmed that the Galaxy Tab S4 will not come with a fingerprint scanner. Instead, it will come with a combination of an iris scanner and face unlock which Samsung has termed “Intelligent Scan”. The confirmation comes from an instructional video from the official Galaxy Tab S4 firmware.

The Galaxy Tab S4 will be the first tablet to come with an iris scanner. With “Intelligent Scan”, users will be able to unlock their device with either the iris scanner or face unlock depending on the environment. For example, when outdoors and under bright sunlight, the iris scanner is known to fail, so in that situation, the device switches to face unlock. And when in poorly lit areas where Face Unlock doesn’t work, the device switches to iris scanning. You can watch the video in the source link below.

Oppo F9 and F9 Pro clinch Bluetooth certification, may launch in August

The OPPO F7 smartphone which was launched this year March would be having a successor really soon. The successor is coming with the name “OPPO F9” and recent teaser from OPPO suggest that the smartphone would be coming in August which is a month from now.

oppo f9 teaser

From all indication which can be concluded from the teaser, the OPPO F9 would sport a dual rear camera on the rear side of the device. The Chinese phone producer Oppo has made the F-series smartphones selfie centric with the F7 following same part. The device would come with a top notch design and most likely would upgrade the front-facing selfie camera.

oppo f9 bluetooth (2)

Interestingly, new OPPO models have just gotten Bluetooth certification (version 4.2). The devices are listed with the model numbers CPH 1823, CPH 1825, CPH 1881 of which the CPH 1823 is thought to be OPPO F9 or OPPO F9 Pro. The Bluetooth certification document clearly confirms the presence of a second model named F9 Pro.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 scores 118741 points on AnTuTu, closer to SD660!

The AnTuTu score of the latest Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has just been shared. Well, this is just a screenshot of the Mi Max 3 interface running AnTuTu app. The benchmark app shows the Xiaomi model picked up a score of 118,741 points which isn’t far off from the average AnTuTu score of Snapdragon 660 models (around 130,000 points). It should be noted that this score is slightly higher than those racked up by other Snapdragon 636-powered models like the Redmi Note 5 with a score of 115,247 points and Meizu E3 with a score of 112478 points. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 AnTutu

Dissecting the score, the Mi Max 3’s CPU polled 55,879 points, while the GPU score is 21,313.  The UX score is 32,744 and finally, the Memory score is 8805 point. Thus, apart from packing a large display, the Max 3 equally has a dependable processor that can handle the needs of most users, including some bit of heavy gaming.

It uses Kryo 260 architecture, octa-core design,  while the CPU frequency is 1.8GHz. The GPU is an Adreno 509 GPU whose performance is not much different from Snapdragon 660. The Max 3 equally comes with6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is also a 4GB + 64GB version.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite may come in two variants

The Huawei Mate series will get refreshed in a few months. A leak from early this year already confirmed that Huawei will also jump from 10 to 20 for the naming of the next Mate phones. Hence, rather than launching as the Mate 11 series, they will launch as the Mate 20 series.

Huawei Mate 10 Lite Render
Huawei Mate 10 Lite’ successor, the Mate 20 Lite may have two variants

Just like last year’s series, the Mate 20 is also expected to have a “Lite” variant. However, we might be getting more than one “Lite” variant this year.

The info, though, still unconfirmed comes from popular leaker Roland Quandt. He mentioned in a tweet that the Mate 20 Lite is codenamed “Sydney” but that there are (at least) two variants. One is referred to as “Sydney M” and the other as “Sydney I”.

Judging from the rest of the tweet, it appears accessories (read case) for both phones are different, with one having a cut-out on the back for a fingerprint scanner and the other not having one; resulting in him speculating that perhaps the second device has an in-display scanner.

An in-display fingerprint scanner for the Mate 20 Lite seems far-fetched but a front-mounted fingerprint scanner sounds more plausible. However, we would need more evidence to confirm Huawei is indeed planning multiple variants.

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL codenames show up in AOSP

Google’s next-generation smartphones, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are already in development. The two devices currently go by the codenames – “blueline” and “crosshatch” and have started appearing in AOSP.

The codenames for the phones first surfaced last year alongside a third device “albacore” which we still don’t know what it is going to launch as. Google has always used names of fishes as codenames for its devices, so this shouldn’t be surprising.

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL AOSP

Crosshatch was the first device to show up in AOSP, appearing as far back as October 2017. However, Blueline made its first appearance last week. Now both devices have appeared together in AOSP alongside older Pixel devices such as Sailfish/Pixel, Marlin/Pixel XL, Walleye/Pixel 2, and Taimen/Pixel 2 XL.

Pixel 3 XL front

We already know what the Pixel 3 XL will look like when it launches as it appeared in a leaked photo about a month ago. The image revealed its codename as “crosshatch” and it will have a notch and a bit of bezel below the screen. It will also have a single rear camera and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Other details revealed are the RAM (4GB LPDDR4X) and storage (128GB) but this most probably won’t be the only variant.

Top 12 Best Battery Flagships in terms of durability in the first half of 2018

The first half the year is done and dusted and it has been a very interesting one in the smartphone industry. The industry has witnessed a high outpour of flagship models most of which are from Chinese Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Apart from their premium builds and powerful specs lineup, one feature that doesn’t usually get overlooked is battery capacity. A technological lab known as Whylab owned by Zealer has conducted a test among the known twelve flagship models to determine their battery durability.Best battery phone

In a terrain dominated by Snapdragon 845-powered flagship model, Huawei’s P20 Pro flagship once again proves itself to be the best flagship model around. Recall that DXOMark’s reviews still rank the P20 Pro as having the best camera among its peers. The P20 Pro is powered by an Hisilicon Kirin 970 AI chipset. Other phones tested include the Huawei P20 which ranks second, Vivo Nex, Smartisan R1, Black Shark Gaming phone, OPPO Find X, OnePlus 6, Xiaomi Mi 8, Samsung Galaxy S9+, Galaxy S9, Mi Mix 2s and HTC U12+, in the order below.

The tests were carried out in three different aspects. The first one is a test of the time each model takes to charge from 0% to 100%. The P20 Pro emerges as the fastest followed as listed below. The device was charged to the brim in just 75 minutes. Another test conducted include subjecting the phone to 5 hours of persistent use in a way that simulates daily use such as, running Weibo, WeChat, streaming online video, local video, reading e-book, playing games, shooting photos, web browsing, making calls, and playing music. In the end, the P20 Pro still had the highest battery percentage (57%) left. The others are just a hair’s breadth behind the Huawei flagship.

Finally, all the models were left on standby mode for 8 hours. At the end of the period, only the P20 Pro and P20 still had 100% of battery power left in their arsenal. Other phones have had their battery percentages reduced slightly (find the list below). Interestingly, the Mi Mix 2s was the most hit, with the lowest percentage (88%) after the 8 hours.

In all, the battery capabilities of all twelve flagship models are anything but disappointing. They truly deserve to be called flagship models as they deliver not only in design but also in their configuration, including battery power.
