China Looking To Accelerate the Development of its Domestic Chip Market With Fresh Funding

China instituted a nationwide investment fund for the integrated circuit industry in January 2014 to encourage the development of the country’s integrated circuit industry. The fund known as National Integrated Circuitry Investment Fund or “Big Fund was managed by the China Development Bank  (CDB) and since then, the fund has made investment decisions in several projects aimed at boosting local chip production and technologies. Up to 50 companies in the chip industry have benefited from the funds so far, including Hong Kong-listed Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp and Yangtze Memory Technologies, a 3D NAND flash chip maker.memory chip price

There are indications now that CDB is closing in on fresh investments worth $19 billion in a bid to accelerate the development of the domestic chip market. ZTE‘s U.S sanctions and trade tensions with Washington acted as catalysts for this latest move.

ZTE’s ban is said to have brought to the fore China’s heavy reliance on imported chips. China’s Ministry of Industry last week disclosed that the fund was raising its second investment round and that it welcomed foreign institutions to take part, without giving details. In the first instance, $22 billion was raised but this time around, the funding would raise up to $19 million for the project. The new funds will reportedly focus on three areas: memory chips, integrated circuit design and compound semiconductors such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride. The establishment of a viable local semiconductor industry will no doubt hurt the U.S chip giants like Qualcomm. But in this case, the U.S drew the first blood even though efforts in this regard had been in the works before now.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Android P OTA Makes An Early Appearance

Google announced the first Android P Developer Preview in March and along with it came a number of changes which are now available for testing on the Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2XL. In what would be the first official public release of Android P for a non-Google device, Xiaomi’s latest flagship – Mi Mix 2s would soon get Android P for preview.

Xiaomi had announced over the weekend that the Mi Mix 2s will be receiving the Android P Developer Preview in the coming days and the ROM will be complete with all the features of Android P included. This was announced via a pot on MIUI Forum but the post has been pulled down. However, a few details were scooped from the deleted post and one of them is that the ROM has a tentative release date of May 8th.  A tentative date of May 8th has been put forward as a release date, assuming all internal testing goes well. That may not be feasible now that the thread has been deleted.

However, it is interesting to note that the Android P firmware for the Mi Mix 2s was recently spotted by the guys at FunkyHuawei.club who have made it available for download. You can find the download link here but there is no guide on how you can install this ROM on your device if you want to do that. What definitely excites us the most is that Xiaomi may likely make an early entrance to Google latest Android version when it finally goes official. We hope that other Xiaomi models apart from its flagship will receive the Android P Developers Preview as well. Android P promises to bring several new features and improvements. Devices running on Android P will prevent background apps from accessing camera or microphone without the consent of the user. Android 9.0 will also prevent secret call recordings and it will also come with an efficient call-blocking feature to prevent spam calls. It will carry native support for iris scanning and HID Bluetooth. It will provide the power to mobile operators to modify the signal strength indicator. A new addition to Android P is the support for iPhone X-like notch.

Last Chance To Get A Windows Phone on the Microsoft Store: Alcatel Idol 4S Briefly Returns In Stock

A majority of Windows phones were removed from the official Microsoft Store last week and for many people, this definitively marked the death of Windows 10 Mobile and the end of the availability of devices powered by this operating system. Well, it was not so: fans just got one last chance to get a Windows handset on the Microsoft Store as Alcatel Idol 4S is back in stock.

alcatel idol 4s

The flagship has been made available to purchase in a bundle with VR glasses with a price tag of just $169.00 in the U.S. Unfortunately, Alcatel Idol 4S was only available for a short time frame: now, it is listed as “out of stock” again. This probably means that only a few units of the Windows phone were available, and all of them have already been purchased. But we suggest you check the page again as it may return in the coming days.

Alcatel Idol 4S was the most powerful Alcatel device launched in the past few years, even though until a few hours ago on the Microsoft Store it carried the price of a mid-range device. It sports a 5.5-inch AMOLED display showing images at a Full HD resolution a high-end quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage expandable with a micro SD.

Meizu mBlu Model Sporting a Full-screen Design Certified by China’s TENAA

Meizu seems to still be fiddling with the mBlu brand name long after the company was expected to have changed the Blue Charm mid-range sub-brand to mBlu. The highly innovative Chinese company had launched the Meizu E3 and it bore the mBlu branding on the models first showcased at the launch event. The branding was somehow removed in subsequent units. A new Meizu model has just been certified by TENAA in China and the device isn’t only listed with the mBlu branding but also it has the mBlu logo stamped on the back panel.

The Meizu mBlu model comes with the model number M811Q and comes with a dimension of 152.3x73x8.4mm, weighing in at 150g. The device also sports a 5.7-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 720p which is an HD+ resolution. Thus, the mBlu model will likely come with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The device will be available in Gold, Black, Red and Blue colour variants when it eventually hits the market. We can’t say which chipset will power the model but it is listed with a 1.5GHz CPU.  Meizu mBlu

Further, the mBlu M811Q packs a dual camera setup at the rear. The cameras are aligned vertically in the middle and the design doesn’t include a protrusion. The rear camera is a 13MP + 2MP combo while at the front there is an 8MP camera. The device packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor placed just under the cameras, and under its hood, there is a 3230mAh battery. The device will also be available in 2GB, 3GB and 4GB RAM variants which would be paired with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB expandable native storage respectively.

Samsung Galaxy A6 (2018) Training Video Leaks, Specs & Features in Tow

Vietnam seems to be a strategic market for smartphone makers. We chose to infer this considering the number of first-time leaks that have emerged from that end lately. Not too long ago, we spotted the price of the unannounced REdmi S2 from that end. Now it is the turn of the unannounced Samsung Galaxy A6 hands-on video to appear well before its launch. The video has since been deleted from the original source but thanks to the guy at Allaboutsamsung.de, here is a duplicate of the original video.

The video has the Samsung Training academy badge which means it is a training video about the specs and features of the phone meant for employees and promoters in the domestic market. The video is in Vietnamese so we really can’t make out much of what is being said but it shows the Galaxy A6 in its real skin. From the little we can grab from the video, the device will pack a 16MP with an aperture f/1.9. The rear camera is also a 16MP sensor with a slightly larger aperture of f/1.7. In addition, the Galaxy A6 (2018) is confirmed to feature a 5.6-inch Super AMOLED display with an HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720p and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display is also covered with a 2.5D curved glass.

It is pretty obvious that the Galaxy A6 will be launched soon but as to when that will happen, we are still in the dark about that. To wrap this up, the Galaxy A6 will likely be introduced alongside the Galaxy A6+ which was recently certified by the Chinese telecoms regulatory agency, TENAA.

360 Mobiles N7 May Come With Helio P60 Since It Has A PumpExpress Charger

360 Mobiles has a new smartphone in the pipeline called the N7. Originally, there were reports the phone will come with a Snapdragon 636 processor, but it appears that may not be the case.

The 360 Mobiles N7 will not only ditch the Snapdragon 636 but won’t even come with a Qualcomm processor at all. How do we know this?

360 Mobiles N7 charger

A photo of the phone’s charger has surfaced online and it shows the charger has MediaTek’s PumpExpress fast charging technology. The charger supports up to 18W fast charging which is similar to Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.

However, since the phone uses MediaTek’s fast charging technology, it means there is a MediaTek chipset inside. Seeing as the N7 is a flagship phone, the only plausible chipset is the Helio P60.

The Helio P60 is not only more powerful than the Snapdragon 636 but also power efficient and it offers a similar performance to the Snapdragon 660.

If you are from Spain, you can pre-order the handset for as much as €269, which roughly translates into $324. Huawei P20 Pro Is The Best-Selling Huawei Flagship Phone In Western Europe

It was already evident since its official launch: Huawei P20 Pro is quite unique in the smartphone market. Now, this has been confirmed even by sales: the latest flagship smartphone of the first Chinese giant in the global hi-tech market has become the best-selling Huawei flagship ever in Western Europe, and it is also the hottest search query in various nations. The sales of the new P20 Pro have outclassed the ones of its predecessor P10 Plus by 316 percent, and this happened just after month from its official European launch. An incredible (but not unexpected) result, despite the pretty high price tag carried by the handset.

Huawei P20 Pro was launched in Europe exactly a month ago, on March 27, with a listing price of €899. But its worth mentioning that currently, it is possible to buy the handset in Europe for less than €700 thanks to online street prices. According to reports, the majority of sales of the P20 series has been registered in the UK, Germany, and France. And according to Google Trends, the Huawei P20 series is one of the most-searched queries in Spain, Germany, and Italy. The strongest point of Huawei P20 Pro is definitely its camera department.

It also boasts an impressive design with a glass back, a metal frame and a notched display with a very high screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi Seems To Be Preparing Surge S2 SoC As Orders At TSMC Increase

In 2017, Xiaomi announced the first smartphone with its own processor: the Mi 6C with Surge S1 on board. Now, it seems that the company is working on the launch of its successor: Surge S2. The S1 is not a flagship-level chipset: it is a mid-range SoC which offers a similar level of performance to Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and MediaTek Helio P20. On AnTuTu benchmarks, it gets a slightly higher score than its two main rivals. According to rumors, its successor should be on par with Huawei’s Kirin 960, which is the chipset found on the Huawei P10 and Mate 9 series (Honor 9 as well).

Surge-S1

Fresh reports are suggesting that Xiaomi has increased orders at several Taiwanese manufacturers in the IT supply chain. Among these, there are TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Largan Precision, Inventec and Foxconn. The Surge S2 processor has been mentioned in an alleged contract signed by the Chinese company with TSMC, and this is what is making everyone think that the company is developing its next proprietary SoC. Reports are also suggesting that the SoC will be realized by TSMC with a 16 nm production process.

It will allegedly be composed of four powerful Cortex A73 with a max frequency of 2.2 GHz and four less powerful Cortex A53 with a clock frequency of 1.8 GHz: so, it is expected to sport an octa-core design. The CPUs will supposedly be paired with a Mali G71 MP8 GPU. Even though Xiaomi Surge S2 will be a mid-range processor, it is expected to support UFS 2.1 storages and LPPDR4 RAM. The Surge S1 did not have so much success, but do note that the Xiaomi Mi 6c was the only handset released with this chipset.

Do you think its successor will be able to compete with Qualcomm and MediaTek latest SoCs just like Huawei’s Kirin line-up?

Xiaomi Officially Teases Mi Band 3

For those who have been eagerly waiting for the official launch of the Mi Band 3, there is good news. Xiaomi has released the first official teaser for the upcoming smartband.

In a tweet earlier today, the official Xiaomi account shared a photo that showed the silhouette of a smartband. The photo has the caption “Can you guess what it is?”.

The smartband doesn’t seem to have a physical button like the Mi Band 2 and looks like what we saw on the CEO’s wrist during the Black Shark launch. So it is safe to say this is the Mi Band 3.

The Mi Band 3 is expected to come with a touchscreen display though we are not sure what type. The device got its Bluetooth certification a few months ago and will come with Bluetooth 4.2 LE.

The Athena Will Launch As BlackBerry KEY²

Yesterday, the BlackBerry Athena was seen on the website of China’s communications agency TENAA. Ever since the first renders leaked, we already knew it was a successor to the BlackBerry KEYone but not until today did proof of its official name surface online.

An image shared on Weibo by a user named @TimEason have revealed that the BlackBerry Athena will launch as the BlackBerry KEY².

One half of the photo shows the phone and the other shows a picture taken with the phone’s camera. The watermark on the photo reads BlackBerry KEY².

The phone has an improved design and we can see from the image that the spacebar still doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

The BlackBerry Athena on TENAA has model number BBF100-4. This is near identical to another device we saw on Geekbench about five months ago whose model number is BBF100-1.

Samsung Galaxy A6+ Gets Certified By TENAA in China

Samsung Galaxy A6+ was spotted on the company’s official Polish website a couple of weeks back signalling that the device may soon go official. There are indications that Samsung will also storm China with the mid-range model soon as the Galaxy A6+ has just received TENAA certification.

Unfortunately, the page only reveals the pictures of the device without the usual table containing the specifications. The specs may likely get listed in a couple of days time from now but we won’t have to wait till then because the specs have already made the rounds online. Talking of the design, the Galaxy A6+ is expected to feature a dual camera setup at the rear with a fingerprint sensor just under the cameras. There is an LED flash at the side of the camera. The device also comes with the antenna design which was used on the Galaxy J series.

ASUS Zenfone 5Z AnTuTu Score Appears To Outscore The Mi Mix 2s

Taiwan phone maker ASUS announced the Zenfone 5 series comprised of the Zenfone 5 Lite, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5Z. Out of the three smartphones, the Zenfone 5Z is the flagship model, packing a Snapdragon 845 chipset. The device is yet to go on sale as it is listed to start selling in May. Ahead of that, the AnTuTu score of the flagship has now appeared online. The photo of the Zenfone 5Z with its AnTuTu score of 274499 points on the screen was recently outed on Slashleaks. ASUS Zenfone 5Z

The score is consistent with that of other Snapdragon 845-powered models but it is interesting to note that the score surpasses the 273741 points scored by Xiaomi’s latest Mi Mix 2s. However, the score is lower than that of the Black Shark gaming phone which scored 279,464 points. ASUS is yet to release the Zenfone 5Z into the market and the score wasn’t officially released. Thus, it is possible ASUS may still optimise the device and the official AnTuTu score may be higher than this.ASUS Zenfone 5Z

As a reminder, the Zenfone 5Z sports a 6.2-inch display with a resolution of 2246×1080p. The device also has a notch on the display and a screen to body ratio of over 90%. ASUS says the device has an AI engine and a feature called AI boost for processor and software optimizations. The device is equipped with dual rear cameras having a Sony IMX363 main sensor. Taiwan IT Supply Chain Eyeing Orders from Xiaomi As Shipments Soar

A recent research report released by Canalys had shown that despite a slump in the Chinese phone shipments, Xiaomi saw a rise in its overall shipment for Q1 2018 YoY. That is a reflection of how successful the company’s strategy of adopting both the offline and online sales model in ramping up supply has been. That success has made the Chinese giant a beautiful bride in the face of companies in Taiwan’s supply chain.Xiaomi Logo

DigiTimes reports that the major players in the Taiwanese IT supply chain are eyeing orders from Xiaomi as a result of the continued increase in its shipments globally. The companies include giants like Foxconn Electronics, Inventec, Largan Precision and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), according to industry sources.

Xiaomi shipped an estimated 70 million phones in 201 and this year, the company has hinted that it as set a target of 100 million shipments. The company dubbed “China’s Apple” has also disclosed its readiness to issue IPO in order to raise funds to deepen its R&D and marketing efforts, as well as the company’s overseas expansion moves. The company’s positive outlook towards increasing its shipments and its ability to continue ramping up the price/performance ratios of its products means more business opportunities for Taiwan-based suppliers.

[Updated: Price Leaks Too] Xiaomi Redmi S2 Hands-On Video Hints Device May Be Heading To Europe First and Then Vietnam

Update: The price of the Redmi S2 has also leaked. It has been added below.

Just before the Mi 6X launched, another similar-looking phone appeared on TENAA. The phone which has a 5.99” display and dual rear cameras is expected to launch as the Redmi S2.

XiaomI Redmi S2

Xiaomi hasn’t revealed a launch date yet but there seems to be nothing hidden about the device anymore other than the price. Not only have live photos of the phone been published online, there is also a hands-on video of the device.

The hands-on video is from Czech Republic website dotekomanie.cz. The source says the phone is already on display at a Mi Store in the Czech Republic. So, it is safe to say Xiaomi has not only entered a new market in Europe but the Redmi S2 may even be a Europe-first device.

Since the phone is already available on display it explains how they were able to get a hands-on video. They were also able to confirm the specs.

The unit in the video is the gold variant. Other than the arrangement of the sensors on the front and the design of the antenna lines, this could pass for the Mi 6X.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faZERDmqiKs[/embedyt]

The Redmi S2 has a 5.99-inch display with a 1440 x 720 resolution. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

The phone has dual rear cameras – 12MP + 5MP – and a 16MP sensor with its own LED flash in front for selfies. It also has a 3,080mAh battery and runs MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo. These specs place it firmly in the mid-range category.

With the recent developments, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 may be upon us much sooner than expected, most likely during the week. Not only will Xiaomi announce a new phone but it should also announce its entry into a new European market.

Notwithstanding, Europe won’t be the only one getting the Redmi S2. It will also be available in Vietnam. This is based on a picture of a flyer (above) which lists the price of various phones including that of the unreleased Redmi S2.

Xiaomi Redmi S2 Live Pictures Spotted in The Wild

Last week, a new Xiaomi smartphone was certified by China’s TENAA. The device notably features a design which looks very similar to the recently unveiled Mi 6X but obviously, the specs didn’t align. Turns out the model is the Xiaomi Redmi S2 and while Xiaomi is yet to officially introduce the model, we have spotted some live pictures of the smartphone. The live photos were uploaded by a Czech Republic-based blog but the author failed to mention the actual source of the device. However, the pictures seem to have been taken from someone who had the opportunity to handle the real machine.Xiaomi Redmi S2

The design of the Redmi S2 is not in anyway different from the Mi 6X. The device is expected to feature a similar 5.99-inch display with the 18:9 aspect ratio. However, the display resolution will be an HD+ (1440 x 720pixels) resolution. The device also seems to retain the ultra-thin build of the Mi 6X but we can’t tell from all of the pictures if the 3.5mm audio jack will also be missing on this model. Also visible is the U-shaped antenna design at the back and the dual camera setup stacked vertically. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.Xiaomi Redmi S2

Keeping the lights on is a 3000mAh battery. This model will likely not come with fast charge support.  The rear cameras are said to be a 12MP + 5MP combo while for selfies, the device will feature a 16MP sensor. Providing the interface will be the Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5. Finally, the Redmi S2 will be available in several color variants, including Pink which is the colour of the model on display.

Photos: The Red Xiaomi Mi 6X Is A Sexy Beast

Xiaomi announced the brand new Mi 6X on Wednesday, April 25. Unlike the Mi 5X, a red variant of the Mi 6X is available right from the launch day. The Mi 5X didn’t get a red variant until a few months after it was announced.

Xiaomi Mi 6X

There are four other colors – black, blue, pink, and gold; and they are all stunning. However, only the red and black variants have black front bezels.

We have been able to get our hands on live photos of the red variant courtesy of ITHome and have decided to share them with you. We have also included some official promotional images from Xiaomi.

The pictures show that all color variants will come in the same retail box and with white accessories (USB-C cable and charger).

The phone does look very thin and it is sad that the audio jack had to go. The dual rear cameras have a slight bump. We don’t know if the glass covering the lens is scratch resistant, so we advise getting a case that has a bulge for the camera cut-out.

I am fawning over this red variant and it sure will make it to my list of favorite red phones for 2018.

The Xiaomi Mi 6X has a 5.99” FHD+ display, a Snapdragon 660 AIE processor, up to 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. It has dual rear cameras in a 20MP + 12MP configuration and another 20MP sensor sitting above the display.

Xiaomi Mi TV Now Rank As Second-Largest China TV Brand, 550K Units Shipped In March

Xiaomi has revealed that a data from AVC has shown that the company’s domestic TV shipments exceeded 550,000 units in March 2018 alone. This record shipment placed the Mi TV brand as the second-largest TV manufacturer in China. Xiaomi launched its first Mi TV product in September 2013 and since then we have seen several models including the cheap Mi TV 4A which had a 32-inch version selling for less than $100 at some point. Xiaomi Mi TV 4A 32-inch, 43-inch

In February 2018, the Mi TV shipments globally reportedly ranked among the top 10 in the global market. Xioamiranked as number 10 and this could be tied to its recent exploit in India where it introduced its TV models for the first time. Xiaomi TV models have also seen tremendous patronage on online retail platforms such as GearBest and others. BlackBerry Athena Photos Surfaces On TENAA

A few weeks ago, renders of an upcoming Blackberry phone codenamed Athena surfaced online. The device has now made its way to China’s TENAA office.

Sadly, what we have today are more photos and not specifications. Hopefully, the specifications should come up soon.

The BlackBerry Athena photos are of a black variant just like the renders. The chances of seeing this phone come in multiple colors are actually very slim. The most we may get is a black variant with silver/gold accents.

The Blackberry Athena is expected to launch as a successor to the BlackBerry KEYone and may arrive as the BlackBerry KEYtwo or BlackBerry KEYone (2018).

The keyboard has been redesigned and above it is a larger display. All physical buttons – volume rocker, power button, and convenience key – are now on the right. On the rear are dual cameras arranged horizontally and positioned at the top left corner. Beside the sensors is a LED flash and a few millimeters below is the  BlackBerry logo.

According to the TENAA listing, the device is made by Huizhou TCL Mobile Communications Co. Ltd and its model number is BBF100-4.

With its arrival on TENAA, we presume the device may launch soon, probably before the end of next month.
