Xiaomi Reportedly Testing Android Oreo on the Xiaomi Mi 5 & Mi Mix

Xiaomi isn’t expected to release MIUI 10 anytime soon but the tech giant has continued to push updates which in some cases usher in Android Oreo to Xiaomi models. For now, only the Mi A1 has got Android Oreo update and that has been plagued by bugs for quite some time and this has hampered the full rollout. The Mi A1 runs Stock Android so it may be easier to do and the company is yet to push Oreo update to any of its MIUI-running phones but there are indications that Xiaomi is shifting the update to other models apart from the Mi 6 and Mi Mix 2 whose beta programs are underway. Xiaomi-Mi-5

A recently leaked firmware file obtained by XDA Developers has reported shown that Xiaomi is testing Android Oreo updates for the Mi 5 and Mi Mix. The information is said to be based on firmware files obtained by @funkyHuawei. XDA Developers claims to have got exclusive access to the files but no pictorial evidence was tendered in this case, unlike in some of its leaks.xiaomi mix hands on

We don’t know when the models listed would get the Oreo update. We still expect the Mi Mix 2s and Mi 7 to be the first Xiaomi models running MIUI custom ROM to run Android Oreo and that would be out of the box. Back to the Android Oreo update for Mi 5 and Mi Mix, the firmware files in question are said to indicate that Xiaomi is testing the Android Oreo update for both of these 2016 flagship smartphones and they go by the code-names Gemini and lithium. Don’t get your hopes high though, as XDA added that the update may never be released, as the company could merely be evaluating the upgrade and later decide not to release it. This makes sense because MIUI 10 or MIUI X, whichever name it finally gets called, will be based on Android Oreo after all. But never say never, just keep your fingers crossed if you are among the Mi 5 and Mi Mix owners anxiously waiting for Android Oreo update.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus vs Motorola Moto G5s Plus: Specs Comparison

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus and Motorola Moto G5s Plus can be considered two symbols of midranges phones launched in H2 2017. Both are devices which seem almost like high-end phones in daily use, but at the same time they are sold at very affordable prices. While the first is also a borderless and innovative device, the second is more classic and it is focused only on giving the best user experience. Let’s see which one is better with a Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus vs Motorola Moto G5s Plus specs comparison.

The display is the most evident difference: while Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has an 18:9 panel with a huge size of 5.99 inches, Moto G5s Plus has a classic 16:9 panel with a size of 5.5 inches, that is not so different from the panels of typical midrangers. The hardware side is exactly the same, both have the octa-core Snapdragon 625 SoC (with a good power and an outstanding efficiency) and 3/4 GB of RAM, so you would not see noticeable differences in performances. While Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a way more interesting display, Moto G5s Plus offers a more interesting camera. It is a dual camera setup with a 13 MP resolution that can capture a high level of detail and behaves well even in low light conditions. R5P does not have the best camera in the mid-range sector, so if you are looking for a camera phone you’d better go for the G5s Plus.

Another advantage of Moto G5s Plus is the dedicated micro SD slot: if you want to use a micro SD to expand the memory, you would not be forced to say goodbye to the secondary SIM slot. On the other hand, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a way bigger battery (4000 mAh vs 3000 mAh), so it also offers a longer battery life. At last, while Moto G5s Plus is a splash resistant phone, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus does not offer any protection against the water. These are the main difference between the two handsets. While Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus can be found in many countries with a price tag of about 200 euros (150 and 195 dollars in China for each variant), Moto G5s Plus costs about 230 euros/dollars. In my personal opinion, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus actually has a higher value for money.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Gets Face Unlock Feature

Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro devices in the Indian market. At the time of launch, the company had promised to soon offer the face unlock feature on the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

It seems that the company was waiting for the devices to go on sale. Just a day after the devices went on sale, the company has rolled out a new update for the Redmi Note Pro 5, introducing the face unlock feature. This makes it the first device from Xiaomi to have face unlock feature.

The Face Unlock feature has been introduced in the Redmi Note 5 Pro through the MIUI v9.2.4 NEIMIEK update. The over-the-air (OTA) update is about 1.6GB in size and also includes camera improvements and stability optimizations.

Redmi Note 5 Pro Face Unlock Update

The update will be available out of the box for customers who ordered the Redmi Note 5 Pro through its first flash sale earlier this week. Users can also manually check its availability by going to the Settings > System updates option or by using the Updater app.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is priced at Rs 9,999 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant and Rs 11,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant. On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro costs Rs 13,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant and Rs 16,999 for the 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM option.

Both the devices feature the trending full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The devices are running on the latest MIUI 9, based on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system out-of-the-box and are powered by a 4,000mAh non-removable battery.

Honor 9 Lite vs Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus: Specs Comparison

Honor 9 Lite was made official back in Decemeber: it is the nth midrange launched by Huawei last year, and it is not very different from Enjoy 7S, Honor 7X and some others. On the other hand, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is a best-buy by Xiaomi announced last year as well.

Is it worth buying the Honor 9 Lite or does the Redmi 5 Plus has better potentialities? This Honor 9 Lite vs Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus comparison will help you find out: let’s see which handset is the most interesting.

When it comes to design, Honor 9 Lite is way more attractive. It has a glass back and a metal frame just like flagship devices. Further, its dimensions are smaller than Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, which is a classic full metal unibody design. On the other hand, R5P has a bigger display, so it is more comfortable for multimedia and productivity. The viewing experience should be similar, both are Full HD+ and 18:9 displays, and usually Xiaomi and Huawei do not differ so much when it comes to midrange panels. The hardware side is similar too: while Honor 9 Lite has a Kirin 659 SoC, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a Snapdragon 625 which is at the same level, more or less. Both come with 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of internal storage depending on the variant.

The camera department should be better on Honor 9 Lite. It has four cameras, two on the back and two on the front (each couple has resolutions of 13 + 2 Megapixel). Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a single 12 MP camera on its back, with average capabilities, and a classic 5 MP snapper for selfies. Another strong point of Honor 9 Lite is the operating system: Android 8.0 Oreo is installed out of the box, while R5P comes with Nougat and Oreo will be rolled out in almost a year, maybe. But Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a much bigger battery, so it will probably last much more with a single charge (3000 mAh vs 4000 mAh). For now, Honor 9 Lite has been launched just in China with a price of 227 dollars for the base variant (191 euros). Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus can be found at just 151 dollars in China (127 euros) and it costs about 200 euros worldwide (we are talking about online street prices). In my opinion, Honor 9 Lite is a slightly better choice if we exclude the battery, but it will cost more. Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a better value for money, with similar performances at a lower price.

Huawei P20 Images Appear on TENAA, Reveals iPhone X-Like Notch Design and Vertical Dual Cameras

Huawei P20 is rumored to be codenamed as Emily. Hence, the EML-TL00 and EML-AL00 Huawei phones that were found listed on TENAA in the previous week could be the storage/RAM/carrier variants of the Huawei P20. The TENAA listings did not include images or specifications of the phone. Its images had recently appeared for some time on the website of the Chinese regulatory agency, but they are no longer available now. However, we managed to get those images before they were removed. As far as specs of P20 variants are concerned, they have still not appeared on TENAA yet.

As it can be seen in the above images, the Huawei P20 features a blue colored metallic body. The device sports a full screen design with a home button at the bottom and a notch at its top. The fingerprint sensor could be embedded in the home button whereas the notch seems to be housing a selfie camera and another sensor.

The left side of the phone is barren, and its right side features a volume rocker and power key. The backside of the phone is curved towards the edges. It features a vertically arranged dual camera setup and below it is the LED flash and Leica branding. The company’s branding can be found at bottom-left of the rear panel.

These images are way different from the leaked photos of a prototype of P20 that appeared yesterday. This suggests that there may be multiple prototype of P20. However, the images that have appeared on TENAA could be the final design of the phone.

The new images of the P20 resembles with the photos of the P20 Lite that have appeared on FCC.  This suggests that the entire P20 series may feature iPhone X like notch design with vertical dual rear cameras. The specifications of the P20 are likely to be revealed soon as the TENAA listings of EML-TL00 and EML-AL00 are expected get updated with their images and specifications in the near future.

OPPO R15 Leaked Image, Renders Surface Amidst Rumors of Cancelling OPPO R13 Moniker

In the past week, the rumor mill had revealed that the OPPO R13 and R13 Plus are the upcoming smartphones that will be fueled by the unannounced Snapdragon 670 chipset. However, fresh information suggests that since the number 13 is considered bad omen in many countries, OPPO has reportedly named its upcoming R series smartphones as OPPO R15 and R15 Plus. At the same time, couple of leaked photos of the alleged OPPO R15 have also surfaced on Weibo.

OPPO R15

A leaked hands-on image of an unknown OPPO phone has surfaced. It has a notch enabled full screen design like the iPhone X. Last year, the Chinese manufacturer had filed a display patent with full screen design with a notch at its top.

Previously spotted leaked photos of OPPO R13 had revealed that it would be arriving with iPhone X like design. Hence, it is speculated that that the handset shown in the fresh photos could be the alleged OPPO R15. The notch of the OPPO phone seems to feature a selfie camera, another sensor and an earpiece.

The handset can be seen in three color variants like Black, Pink and Purple. Unlike like vertically stacked dual cameras of the iPhone X, the OPPO smartphone sports horizontally arranged dual cameras. The antenna bands are placed on the top and bottom edges of the phone. The fingerprint sensor also resides on the back panel.

The OPPO R15 and R15 Plus smartphones have reportedly received certification 3C authority in China. The Snapdragon 660 chipset was introduced through the OPPO R11 and OPPO R11 Plus phones that debuted in June last year. It is speculated that the OPPO R15 and R15 Plus will replace them in June this year. These handsets are expected to carry support for VOOC fast charging. Also, the R15 duo could be the first smartphones to arrive with the upcoming Snapdragon 670 chipset.

Over 300,000 Units Of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 And Redmi Note 5 Pro Sold In Its First Sale In India

After announcing the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro phones in the Indian market last week, both the phones were finally made available for purchase in India, exclusively through online retailer Flipkart and Xiaomi’s official online store.

Now, Manu Kumar Jain, Group Vice President and Managing Director of Xiaomi India, revealed through Twitter that the company managed to sell more than 300,000 units of the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro within just 3 minutes in its first ever flash sale.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016 and 2017) Updated With The Latest Security Patch

As expected, after the update hit the units of Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7 (2017), the higher-end Samsung Galaxy A5 — both the 2016 and 2017 versions have received a new update with the latest security patches. The new update arriving through an OTA notification contains the security patch from the month of February.

Google releases a new security patch once a month, but this one is particularly important because it contains the fixes for Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities, which are among the most dangerous ever discovered on this operating system. It also contains fixes for 16 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s software. The update for Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 and 2017 weighs about 34 MB and it started rolling out in Russia for the A5 (2016) and in the Netherlands for the A7 (2017).

It will gradually expand all around the world, so if you still did not receive the notification do not worry, it is not immediate. The build number of the update is A510FXXU5CRB2 for the 2016 version and A520FXXU4BRB1 for the A5 2017. It is still based on Android Nougat as these two handsets still do not get Oreo. Soon, the update will roll out on the main Samsung flagships as well: Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8.

Photos of Fake Galaxy S9 Retail Box Seen Online

About a month ago, photos of a Samsung Galaxy S9+ clone surfaced online. The clone which was seen in Shenzhen was just the first of many that would surface later. Today, it has been followed by a retail box of a fake Galaxy S9.

Fake Galaxy S9 retail box front

While it may be easy for tech heads to identify that this is a fake, an average Joe may fall for it.

The first thing that gives it away are the dimensions of the phone. The Galaxy S9 is much more smaller than the dimensions provided on the retail box. It is also expected to come with 4GB RAM and not 6GB of RAM.

Another wrong specification is the dual cameras. As we already know, only the Galaxy S9+ will come with dual rear cameras. There are also some typos in the text like the spelling for AKG which is incorrectly written as AJG.
