Vifocal C1000 – Design

We’ve received a full black version of the C1000, which looks really good and seems to have good quality. The screen is a large 5.5 inch size. Above it are the call speaker and front camera and underneath are three soft buttons. Unfortunately these buttons are not lit, but otherwise the phone looks impressive.

Vifocal_C1000_01

The sides of the phone contain all the essentials; the volume is on the left side and the power button is on the right. On the top of the phone are the USB slot and the headphone socket.

The back face of the phone contains the rear camera with the LED flashlight below it. Under that, we have the fingerprint scanner. Underneath the cover there’s a large battery compartment and slots for two SIM cards, one TF slot. Underneath this compartment is the media speaker.

Vifocal C1000 – Screen

The Vifocal C1000 has a 5.5 inch screen with a 960 x 540 resolution. The specifications aren’t exactly mind blowing but Vifocal has used QHD resolution and,  given the screen, is fine with regards to visibility and the touchscreen works very well.

Vifocal C1000: Performance

The C1000 is equipped with the quad-core Mediatek MTK6582 based on the Arm 4 Cortex processor (which clocks at 1.3 GHz) and Mali 400MP GPU graphics. It is a bit of a disappointment that there is no octa-core processor, but that said, the Vifocal C1000 is plenty powerful enough to run high powered apps and games.

Vifocal_C1000_012

The AnTuTu benchmark tests show some great results. The score of 18018 means the C1000 outperforms the Galaxy S3 and Nexus 4, so it should have no problem with high performance tasks.

Vifocal C1000: Feature Highlights

Finger Scanner

The Vifocal C1000 is the first smartphone with this technology which unlocks the phone quickly by confirming the identity of the operator by fingerprint recognition.  The scanner is found on the back of the phone.

Vifocal_C1000

Android 4.4 OS

With most smartphones running the Android 4.2 it is a surprise to see the C1000 model running the latest Android 4.4 version. It runs well without any issues though.

Vifocal_C1000_03

GPS function

The GPS feature of the Vifocal C1000 was tested and found to function well and utilise many satellites for stability and accuracy. There were no problems whatsoever with its use.

Vifocal_C1000_015

Extras and Omissions

The C1000 has OTG function enabling it to communicate and send data to other devices. Its Bluetooth and WiFi also work well. One disappointment, however, is the lack of NTG function which could be a deterrent for fans of the technology.

Vifocal_C1000_02-300x225Vifocal_C1000_013-300x225

Vifocal C1000: Camera/Battery

The camera specifications of the C1000 are 5.0MP front and 8.0MP in the rear. Quite low spec for a high-end smartphone. These are some sample pictures taken with it:

Vifocal_C1000_033-224x300Vifocal_C1000_035-224x300

Vifocal_C1000_036-224x300Vifocal_C1000_034-224x300

The battery life is standard really, with most users wanting to watch videos and play games on phoes that simply don’t have the stamina. In this case, the Vifocal C1000 lasts about as long as the others but there is of course always the option of charging both batteries to extend the use of the phone. The 3200 mAh battery provides 2-3 days standby time.

Vifocal C1000: Conclusion

The Vifocal C1000 has many great features, such as the groundbreaking finger scanning technology and running the latest Android 4.4 OS. These positives are counterbalanced with some oversights however, low screen resolution, the quad-core processor and low MP camera options are sure to put people off this otherwise impressive model.

The Honor 6 is good but came out too late (Review)

 4a29fe971aaaf9c948b4caac644d3783_w_680_h_425

I.                   An Improvement for Huawei

Restricted by its microchip strategy, for more than three years, Huawei has not had a flagship phone in the truest sense even though the company has been targeting the high-end market since Yu Chengdong’s arrival.

After HiSilicon started producing microchips faster, the Honor 6 finally had standard cell phone functions. Besides its processor, Huawei has improved a lot in the last two years.

The base band of Huawei’s processors has surpassed Qualcomm’s and Huawei is the third company in the industry to integrate 4G base bands into their processors.

Regarding ISP, their processors use Altek-based technology, improving the quality of photos.

As for videos, video processors and codecs can be customized and tests show that they are pretty good.

Regarding the software, the UI is pretty fluid even though it’s not exactly aesthetically pleasing. Huawei has also improved several small personalized functions.

Like the Oneplus, there are not any clear flaws with the Honor 6. ON the contrary, it has some amazing features. Its most useful feature is the Wifi. Xiaomi’s attempts at taking advantage of public WiFi and shared passwords has been criticized for privacy and safety problems and, as a result, failed. Huawei, though, could easily do this with the help of internet providers. Huawei’s partnership with providers is one of their strengths.

The Huawei 6 is the result of progress made by Huawei in the last two years and is an excellent product.

II.                Late opportunity

The Honor 6 was released on June 24, 2014, the end of the second quarter of the year.

Other cell phones with similar specs (four A15 cores, the Snapdragon 800 and more powerful processors) were released as early as the third quarter of 2013, but most appeared in the fourth quarter.

New phones have been coming out non-stop since late 2013, i.e. ZTE U988S, Mi 3, Nubia Z5S, ELIFE E7, ZTE Grand SII, OPPO Find 7, vivo Xplay 3S, Xshot, OnePlus One, Smartisan T1…

Costing 1999 RMB, the Honor 6’s biggest rivals are the OnePlus One, the cheaper Mi 3, and ZTE Grand SII. Costing 1499 RMB (241.62 USD), the Mi 3 should have a fighting chance.

The ZTE Grand SII has a replaceable battery. Although the Honor 6 is a great step forward for Huawei, but it does not have much a great advantage over the Oneplus One, with its design, craftsmanship, texture, and the Mi 3 with its cheap price.

If the Honor 6 was released in the fourth quarter of 2013 or the first quarter of 2014, it might have a bigger chance. But as it’s being released in the second quarter, it might not have much of a chance as its competitors are starting to cut prices.

What’s even more unfortunate is that MT6595 will be shipped in the third quarter of the year. Its features are excellent and it does not use too much power. Its low price should also lower the prices of powerful devices that will use it to around 1000 RMB (161.08 USD). This won’t leave the Honor 6 with a lot of time to get ready.

The Honor 6 is a great product but unfortunately it has come out at the wrong time. If Huawei really wants to fight back, they would continue to push HiSilicon to make better processors and catch up with Samsung and Qualcomm. At the same time, they should create more processors that use A57 cores and use the most advanced technology.

Things might just turn around in 2015 if Xiaomi and Huawei release products that use a 64-bit A57-core processor in the first quarter.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s inside.

IMG_3184

The Kinsing S1 is pretty strong in some areas, it has a MediaTek MT6582 3G chipset running Android 4.4. OS. It has dual-SIM support, 512 MB RAM, and the somewhat limited onboard storage of 4GB is MicroSD expandable up to 32GB so not too much of a problem. There is a 5.5inch QHD 960 x 540 resolution IPS touch screen display. The front camera is 2MP and the rear is 5MP with flash light.

IMG_3187

IMG_3190

The features included are GPS, AGPS, Wi-Fi, FM Radio and Bluetooth, with 3G WCDMA 850/2100 GSM 850/950/1800/1900. It has a gravity sensor and proximity sensor. The battery is 2800mAh.

IMG_3188

IMG_3189

This promises to be a good value phone for the budget market, the specs are all acceptable and the phone itself looks great. Alright the Kinsing doesn’t have the capacity of the OPPO Find 7, but it’s not a bad basic phone and very cheap indeed.

1. Why doesn’t the China Mobile edition of the Honor 6 support dual-SIM card?

Unlike the China Unicom version, the Honor 6 edition won’t be a dual-SIMphone. Both phones support TD-LTE/FDD-LTE/TD-SCDMA/WCDMA/GSM.

4978538_dsc00661_thumb

The China Unicom edition supports dual-SIM

It’s not that Huawei cannot make the China Mobile edition dual-SIM, but when they first started designing the Honor 6, they did a survey of the habits of their uses and found that most of those that want a dual-SIM phone used China Mobile’s 2G internet and, so, did not find it necessary to make it dual-SIM.

2. Does the Honor 6 support timed flight mode?

Although the Honor 6 has a flight mode, it does not have a timer and cannot be turned off automatically.

3. Are there any plans to ship the Kirin 920 to other manufacturers?

Right now, HiSilicon’s chips will only be used by Huawei’s own devices. There are no plans to ship the Kirin 920 to other companies as more work still need to be done on it.

4895936_img_4651_1_thumb

The HiSilicon Kirin 920 octa-core chipset

 4. How come there is no China Telecom edition?

There are no plans for a China Telecom Edition for the Honor 6 at the moment. The

Huawei P series has a China Telecom version so it’s not like Huawei cannot make one for the Honor 6 but one reason could be because it will increase production costs. Another reason could

5. Does the Honor 6 have a gyroscope and electronic compass?

Yes. It also has a GPS and other directional features.

6. Is the China Unicom version’s dual-SIM mode 4G?

Yes. One slot is for 4G/3G/2G, the other is for GSM. This means that the Unicom edition supports 4G/3G/2G and GSM dual-SIM.

7.    Since FDD internet in the Honor 6 has been shut down, then how can anyone access 4G internet through the Unicom Edition?

4895936_img_46481_thumb

Five-mode frequency (FDD has been temporarily shut down)

Since the China government has not allowed FDD LTE yet, 4G phones in China can only use TD-LTE. Therefore, users can still access 4G LTE out of China.

8. What’s so unique about the Kirin 920?

Like all other processors, the Kirin 920 uses commonly-used ARM approved cores such as the A7, A15, and A9, but it’s not a processor that was simply put together from scraps. What distinguishes the Kirin 920 from other processors and gives it an advantage is its base band. Although, it’s not the only octa-core chipset around, its CPU, GPU, and baseband are different from those in other processors.

9.  Will customers have to rush to purchase the Honor 6?

According to Huawei, in the beginning, Huawei had several 100,000 phones on stock, but this could have been the plan based on the number of pre-orders. The writer thinks that as an electronic device, the Honor 6 is heading for the top-of-the-line market. Based on market expectations, initial sales should be fierce, but due to the Honor’s strong supply chain capacity, any shipping problems should be easily solved.

10.  Is the Cat 6 twice as fast as the Cat 4?

Theoretically, the Cat 6 can run at up to 300Mbps in an FDD network (220Mbps if TD-LTE). The Cat 4 can only run up to 150Mbps (100Mbps if TD-LTE).

11.  Does it have water-proof functions?

Unlike the Honor 3, no, it doesn’t.

How to Improve GPS performance on your Mediatek device.

Mediatek devices are commonly regarded as lacking in the GPS department. Although the hardware is most of the problem, there are adjustments that can be made to the device settings that can improve the function. It is not a full fix, however, but an improvement all the same. All that is needed is a MTK device such as MT6577, MT6589, MT6589T, MT6572, MT6582, MT6588, MT6592, MT6595 to name a few. The Mobileuncle MTK Tools app is required, available for download from the Google Play store. You also need internet connection to complete the task, so make sure you have a secure connection before you begin.

Ready? Here goes.

  1. Install Mobileuncle MTK Tools on your device.
  2. Run MobileUncle MTK Tools on your device and Tap ‘Engineer Mode’

mobileuncle[1]

3.  In ‘Engineer Mode’ select the option ‘Engineer Mode MTK’

engineermode[1]

4.  Swipe your finger from right to left and go to the ‘Location’ tab

engineermodemtk_location[1]

5. Enter ‘Location-Based Service’, check ‘Enable EPO’ and ‘Auto Download’. Then scroll down to the ‘Update Period’ and set it to 14:40 (one day)

enableepo[1]

6. Tap ‘EPO (IDLE)’. If you get the message “EPO update failure” in the Log, this method will not work for you. Most likely because your device is probably trying to download EPO data from http://ftp.epo.mediatek.com which is not working. If this occurs, complete general settings below and try the alternate method below that again. If, with luck, you see an “EPO update success” message, you can do the general settings below and then reboot your phone. You should then notice an improvement in GPS function.

General GPS Settings

1. Go to Settings then tap ‘Location Access’ and tick everything there, also turn GPS satellites button to “ON”.

locationaccess[1]

2. Tap ‘GPS satellites’ to enter the A-GPS settings. Tick the boxes you see in the picture below:

eposettings[1]

3. Enter ‘A-GPS Settings’ and select the network used from ‘Network Used’. If you choose ‘Home + Roaming’ you may get high bills if while you are abroad you are using this excessively. So, select ‘Home’ unless you wish to take the risk.
4. Select “EPO settings” and check Auto download.

Alternative method (for rooted phones):

1. Download and install the MT GPS EPO Fix from the Google Play Store
2. Run the application and follow the on-screen instructions carefully
3. Reboot your device and then check your GPS fix performance.

As stated earlier, this is not a compensation for the hardware issues, but it is a way of making the most of what your device can do. Hopefully it will provide significant improvement of your device’s GPS function.
